Why your doubles fall apart on the floor tom (despite countless hours of pad practice)19 mai 202600:12:55

You've put in the hours. Your doubles feel solid on the pad; then you move to the floor tom and the second stroke turns into an echo.

In this episode I break down exactly why that happens and what to do about it.

The answer applies to all the key techniques; singles, doubles, moeller, all of it and it comes down to one thing most drummers never train: the no-rebound version of their technique.

I discuss the two versions of every technique, and a simple drill to start building basic control, how to gradually develop no-rebound techniques efficiently...

... and why what you front-load in your warm-up is one of the highest leverage things you can do at the kit.

Seriously. If your warm up looks like scrolling on Instagram and then having a jam right now... Then you need this.

Rudiments: Why you blank when trying to play rudiments in a jam or live performance (despite hundreds of hours practising them)07 sept. 202400:09:00

I think a lot of people get the wrong idea about rudiments.

They think rudiments are either boring, and something they have to just repeat over an over, and they'll show up in their playing eventually.

Or they think rudiments are essential hand technique training mechanisms to open up skills, but they miss the point of how to use them musically.

And if you do practise rudiments the wrong way, that's true.

This podcast is about what to do instead...

Why I Said, "Practise Your Singles For Less Time, But Do This Instead04 sept. 202400:08:53

If a someone comes to me to improve their hand speed, why on earth would I recommend students focus at least a third of their time on creativity when working on their rudiments, rather than doubling down on repetitions on the pad?

Because it leads to faster hands, while ALSO developing your creative freedom on the drums, that means you can actually USE those rudiments in your playing. (And it's more fun)

Here’s what happened…

Step 1 to becoming a "natural" ear player on the drums without hours of boring tedious exercises... 03 sept. 202400:09:15

The 4 keys to building the habit of playing drums everyday (even if you haven't practised in weeks) 10 mai 202400:26:50
This podcast is a summary of what I have learned from two of my favourite books of all time on habit building... And from years now of obsessively trying to understand and help all my students build positive habits of drum practise. I have helped students with all manner of neurological challenges and strengths and weaknesses by using these principles. Originally I became obsessed with this topic due to my own large dificiencies in this area. I have what I you could call and obsessive personality... So I get hooked in on things hard... But can also easily get dragged in to new activities and lose sight of precious habits. These days I have a deep control over this that means I can be self employed and show up to all activities that I need to including my own daily practice regimen. My goal with this podalcast is that it helps you find new and effective evidence based approaches to navigate your own challenges and get and stay on track with your drumming goals while having the time of your life. Happy drumming! 😁 Matt

Struggle to access drums? How air drumming can actually be better practice than playing on a kit! 03 déc. 202000:12:36
I was helping a student who would not be able to access a kit over the weekend and is preparing a recording. So I made him air drum in the lesson and he was blown away how just 2 plays through a song air drumming transformed his performance of the tune when he returned to the kit. I had to go years like this... Air drumming everywhere... and it served me incredibly well. Learn more in this episode.
Get rid of creepy or robotic performance and replace it with authentic and charismatic showmanship! 02 déc. 202000:19:51

Sound like everyone else? On a practical way starting to develop your own vocabulary... 01 déc. 202000:13:35
There can sometimes be a disconnect with this... No one seems to talk about how to develop your own vocabulary... It's easy to add sound effects and put drums in funny orders... But how do we actually develop a PERSONAL VOCABULARY? You know. Like Bonham. Buddy. Etc etc. How do we start to sound like we made some of our own decisions about how to interpret phrasing... And hidden in that is the point... We must of course be interpreting the music for it to sound great... How do we get there directly?
