Why you need to control the triple threat of Distraction, Speeding, Fatigue in your fleet | eDriving12 May 202100:26:48

In the latest edition of the podcast, HSE Network sits down with eDriving's Managing Director Andy Cuerden and their Customer Success Director for Europe Nick List.

The podcast covers the dangers associated with the triple threat of Distraction, Speeding and Fatigue, which are all factors that could be putting drivers and commuters in your company at risk.

Key takeaways:

• Speeding, according to the World Health Organization, contributes to around 30% of road deaths in high-income countries and around 50% in some low and middle-income countries.

• Fatigue is thought to contribute to around one in five car crashes

• if we look at distraction, drivers using a mobile phone are around four times more likely to crash

Together with Global Road Safety Partnership, we’ve just launched a new Triple Threat campaign, which includes three dedicated resource centres on our website – one each for Speeding, Distraction and Fatigue. Each resource centre includes an infographic about that behaviour, as well as eBooks, webinars, articles and more.

And, in support of UN Global Road Safety Week, which takes place 17-23 May, and is this year focused on speed, we are actually offering a free of charge speeding eLearning module for drivers, as well as hosting a website with Global Road Safety Partnership about managing speeding in the workplace. Details of both can be found in the Speeding Resource Centre at www.edriving.com.

What The Best Organisations Do For Mental Health in the Workplace | Dr Tim Marsh 22 Jul 202500:27:27

In recent years, there’s been growing momentum around the topics of psychological safety and mental health at work, and rightly so. But while progress is being made and attitudes are shifting, the statistics remain sobering. Far more people tragically take their own lives than are lost in workplace accidents.

In this episode, we’re joined by Dr Tim Marsh, a leading voice in safety culture and mental health, to explore how the best organisations are going beyond reactive measures and embedding proactive approaches to mental wellbeing. From creating spaces where people feel safe to speak up to fostering a culture where asking the right questions is part of everyday leadership, we unpack what "good work" really looks like.

We also shine a light on the powerful work being done by Brawd, a mental health charity focused on making a lasting impact in communities and workplaces.

Why 8 hours of sleep is a myth and where the health and safety industry is going wrong with sleep | Dr Neil Stanley25 Feb 202100:47:10

The idea that you need 8 hours of sleep is a myth, and today we dive into that myth with renowned sleep expert Dr. Neil Stanley.

With Neil, we discuss the 8-hour myth in sleep as well as how Neil helps companies with their employee's sleep. Neil talks us through some of his previous experiences and experiments within the sleep research field in addition to where he feels the health and safety profession may be going wrong when it comes to incorporating sleep into the wider well-being sphere.

With Neil, we also touch on the potential dangers of non-expert sleep advice and his feelings on the ‘sleep advice industry’ that may be doing more harm than good when it comes to helping people.

This is a good discussion if you want to find out more about the kind of methods that some companies have used to optimise sleep and therefore look after the well-being of their workers.
