S4E169 How Is Homesteading Different From Farming?
26 Sep 2023
00:26:58
This week I spent a lot of time reading the policy manuals of the Farm Bureau and the NY Farm Bureau. As I did, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how homesteading and farming are the same. And how they are different. On this episode, I share my thoughts on that as well as why I think homesteading is crucial to solving the issue of aging farmers.
Back in May at the Southern Adirondack Homesteading Festival, I was introduced to Natalie, the manager of our local region for the NY Farm Bureau. We became friends. She has been trying to convince me to join the organization, but I wasn't convinced that it would be a good fit. While their mission is advocacy and education relating to agricultural issues, I didn't think they would care about the issues and concerns that homesteaders face. As I shared some of those concerns with Natalie, she said to me, "Brian, NYFB cannot advocate for problems they don't know exist. They can't provide education in areas they are unaware that people are struggling with." Well, what changed? And why did I finally join NYFB? Listen and find out.

This year my garden has sucked. Worst. Garden. Ever. It's been one of those gardening seasons that could make you want to quit gardening. Forever.
But, instead, I'm trying to learn some lessons. Some lessons that I hope will help me be successful in years to come. Hopefully it will inspire you to keep gardening even if things haven't gone well for you either.

S4E163 Five Reasons You Should Quit Doing Some Things
31 Jul 2023
00:37:15
This week, we sent our last remaining American Guinea Hogs off to their new home in Michigan . It is a bittersweet day for us. And while a lot of thought went into making this decision, it is very easy to second guess "quitting" something. And, so on this episode I remind you (and myself) that it is ok to quit things. In fact, sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is to move onto something else.
On this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why we might want to quit things:
1. You don't like it. 2. You don't need it. 3. You don't want to do it. 4. You can't do it. 5. You want to do something else.
Quitting doesn't have to be forever. sometimes it's "not now, but maybe later......" Whether it's a permanent quit or it's just a pause, it's ok to quit things, to shift gears, to do something else. It may feel uncomfortable. It may affect your how your perception of yourself. It might affect how others perceive you. But, it's STILL ok to quit things. Don't be afraid to be a quitter.

S4E160 Surving The Emotional Roller Coaster of Empty Nest Homesteading
03 Jul 2023

And sometimes we have felt them all at the same time. On this episode I am joined once again by Bonnie as we discuss those emotions and how we have survived (and are continuing to survive) this emotional rollercoaster as we hurtle towards becoming empty nest homesteaders.
S4E159 Empty Nest Homesteading - 5 Steps To Rediscovering Purpose
19 Jun 2023
00:27:32
As I have been anticipating 3B Farm becoming 2B Farm as Brian Jr. heads off to college, it's left me with a bit of an identity crisis. For the last 18+ years of my life, my primary focus has been on trying to be a present dad. Now, my role as dad is about to change. And, while I'm excited about that, it also leaves me contemplating my purpose. And so, on this episode, I share with you 5 ways that I am trying to rediscover purpose in my life. Hopefully, this will be helpful for other who are also going through this transition. Enjoy!!!
On this episode, we begin our series on homesteading as empty nesters. Bonnie and I are in the midst of that transition right now. This past week was Brian J's last week of school. And in a few months, he'll be headed off to college. And our lives will change drastically. Our homestead will change dramatically. And so as we work through all of that, we want to share with you some of the lessons we have learned and are learning to help those who will be making similar transitions in the future. We are starting this series off with some thoughts on "Letting Go". On this episode, Bonnie and I share 6 tips that we've found helpful as we've been learning to let Brian J go.
The day after I released Episode 156, (Be A Helpful Homesteader), I ran across a Facebook post that got me to thinking about the topic in a slightly different manner. Yes, sometimes people are harsh when replying to people's questions or problems. We've all seen that. But, I think we've also seen people get upset and offended because someone dared tell them the truth. And sometimes, well, the truth hurts. And so on this episode I talk about the importance of being teachable. Even when it hurts. Even when people are jerks.
While scrolling through some of the Facebook homesteading groups, I saw over and over again people starting their post by saying, "Please be kind" or "Please don't judge me". It's sad to me that people feel the need to start out their post that way. And so, today's episode is really all about being kind, remember that we too, at one point didn't know the things, and that it really isn't hard to be kind to others. (And when all else fails, we can just scroll on by!!)
This week, I ran across the story of Paul Strobel, a farmer in Western NY who had a run-in with some animal rights activists that left him shaken and worried that they might try to steal his livestock.
His story reminded me of a farmer near me several years ago name Joshua Rockwood who did have his animals taken under the guise of animal rights. He was able to fight and get his animals returned to him.
On this episode, we talk about how we as homesteaders should be vigilant and how we can take steps to avoid problems with animal rights activists.
S4E154 Does Your USDA Hardiness Zone Matter When Planting A Garden?
01 May 2023
00:25:50
This time of the year, I see many people asking questions similar to this: I'm in zone xyz, is it too soon to plant beans outside? On this episode we talk about what USDA hardiness zones or growing zones are and why I don't think they matter at all to "regular" vegetable gardens. We talk about instead why instead last and first average frost dates, the length between those dates (known as the growing season) and ambient air and soil temperatures are FAR better indicators as to when you should start that veggie garden. I also mention http://almanac.com as a great resource for much of that info.
S4E153 The Pros and Cons of The Mediterranean Diet

00:42:48
On this final episode in our series on the Mediterranean Diet, I am once again joined by Bonnie as we talk about the pros/cons of the Mediterranean WOE.
Last week, we visited my brother Eric in Alaska. He made arrangements for us to visit the homestead of some friends of his from church. On this episode I talk about that visit and what I learned. Am I inspired to move to Alaska? Listen, and find out.

S4E149 Can We Homestead In Upstate New York And Still Follow The Mediterranean Diet?
27 Mar 2023
00:31:37
For awhile, I really struggled with whether or not we could follow the Mediterranean Diet and still be homesteaders. After all, we don't live in the Mediterranean. And there are a lot of common ingredients to the Mediterranean Diet, that we cannot grow here in upstate NY. A. We can't produce olive oil B. We are 100s of miles away from the ocean and fresh seafood C. We can't grow citrus, artichokes, olives, capers, figs and pomegranates, all things found in many Mediterranean diet dishes. D. Because we have smaller acreage, we can't grow lots of whole grains or nuts.
But, eventually I realized that I was focused on the wrong things. Instead of being focused on what I COULD do, I was focused on what I COULDN'T do. A. I can grow LOTS of vegetables. B. I can grow LOTS of herbs. C. I can raise a lot of meat. D. Even Ma and Pa Ingalls bought stuff at the store. E. The principles of the Mediterranean Diet are universal.
On this episode, Bonnie joins me once again as we dive into what the Mediterranean Diet is and why we have chosen to adopt it. We talk about what we've found easy. And what we've found challenging. I also give Bonnie a pop geography quiz and she tries to give me directions to the Mediterranean region using fence posts???!!!
S4E147 5 Keys To Establishing Long Term Healthy Eating Habits
13 Mar 2023
00:52:49
On this episode, I am joined by my lovely wife Bonnie as we talk about 5 keys to ensuring long term success when adopting a new way of eating. We talk about the difference between diets, diet plans and "ways of eating" and how that terminology has been helpful as we adopt the Mediterranean Diet.
The 5 Keys To Success we discuss are: 1. Accountability 2. Support 3. Affordability 4. Lifestyle Impact 5. Understanding Your Why
We are facing a season of change here on the homestead. Bonnie was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic and thus prescribe the Mediterranean Diet. And we are also facing the prospect of an empty nest. On this episode I share with you how these changes have been impacting me and how they are going to impact this podcast.
S3E145 How Successful Were We In Growing Potatoes?
26 Sep 2022
00:16:13
Back on Episode 133, we talked about the 3 ways we were growing potatoes here on our homestead. So, how did things work out? On today's episode we talk about what worked well, what didn't work well and what we'll be doing differently next year.
S3E142 How I'm Getting Ready For Next Year's Garden
05 Sep 2022
00:35:18
On this week's episode I share some of the things I'll be doing this fall and things I've been thinking I need to do in the spring to set myself up for success for next year's garden.
It seems like nothing has gone right on the homestead this year. But, we soldier on. https://www.facebook.com/afarmishkindoflife/posts/pfbid0yqWUPBy4XDePPL1Bn5cE1TAe6L6WaYmwyARdqY61n5WGYFbr6mUcbv32eHHFSbUvl Enjoy!! Brian

S3E139 Expectations Are Resentments Under Construction
08 Aug 2022
00:29:27
A few months ago, I ran across this quote by Ann Lamott, "Expectations Are Resentments Under Construction" and knew it would make for a great topic on the podcast.
We arrived home yesterday from our vacation. And I found a very weedy garden waiting for me. At first I was very frustrated and upset over that. I felt inept as a gardener, a failure as a homesteader, a fraud as a homesteading content creator. But, then I remembered WHY the garden has weeds. And that change in perspective caused me to see the weeds in a way I never have.
S3E134 Homesteading On An 8x10 Patio - With Clare from Start Small Homestead
20 Jun 2022
01:03:29
On this episode I am excited to be joined by Clare from Start Small Homestead on Instagram. Her bio says, "I have an eight by 10 patio and can't plant in the ground. There are big obstacles in my teeny space, but I'm homesteading anyway. Some dreams start small."
S3E133 Three Ways We're Growing Potatoes On Our Homestead This Year
13 Jun 2022
00:30:20
Because I primarily garden in raised beds that are about 10 to 12 inches deep until a couple of years ago, I had only tried growing potatoes once. A big part of the reason why I didn't try growing potatoes is because I thought you need a depth and a quality of soil that I don't have. Another part of the reason why I didn't grow potatoes is because I had only seen them grown in the very labor intensive "dig a ditch" and then "hill the crap" out of them before playing hide and go seek with the potatoes with a potato fork.
But, then I discovered the Ruth Stout method which I've used for the past 2 years. And this year I'm trying 2 more methods that are supposed to be much less work while still producing a good harvest.
I was recently interviewed for a magazine. As part of that interview, they asked that I also submit a video about 5 things I think someone needs to know in order to start a successful vegetable garden. While I don't want to spoil the entire thing, I did think it would be appropriate to offer up my introduction as kind of a teaser. So, enjoy. And stay tuned for the publication of the interview and the release of the entire video!!
On Memorial Day, our tradition is to go visit my grandparents grave up in Monkton, Vermont. It's a really pretty ride. But, it's also a great time for me to reflect on the memories of my grandparents. And, today I reflect on 3 things that I learned from my Papa.
S3E130 What's The Most Sustainable Way To Raise Meat Chickens?
23 May 2022
00:31:43
Today we are revisiting the topic of meat chickens. And in particular we are focusing on the sustainability aspect of raising the Cornish X. The fact is that as homesteaders we cannot hatch out our own Cornish X. We are dependant on others to do this for us. Is there a better way? On this episode we talk about the other options and why we continue to raise the Cornish X on our homestead.
S3E129 100% of the Seeds You Never Plant Will Never Sprout
16 May 2022
00:25:27
Somewhere I ran across this quote; "100% of the Seeds You Never Plant Will Never Sprout" and when I did, I thought, "Boy, that will make a great podcast episode." Today is that day. Today we talk about 4 things that keep us from ever getting started and what we can do to overcome our fear.
Time, Money and Space. The lack of these are the biggest barriers to taking the next right step on our homesteading journey. But, maybe our issue isn't a lack of resources. Maybe it's because we're looking at things the wrong way. Today's episode is all about reframing our minds to get us to think about things differently.
Enjoy!! Brian PS: Here is the link to the LOTs project. I really screwed that one up!!
Lately I've been struggling with feelings of inadequacy. That what I'm doing isn't enough. It's not good enough. I look at what others are doing and I feel like it doesn't measure up. On today's episode I remind myself that we all have unique constraints. And that I can only be the best version of me that I can be. And think you should do the same.
Enjoy!! Brian PS: Here is the link to the LOTs project.
S3E126 Go Big Or Go Home: A Really BAD Approach To Homesteading
25 Apr 2022
00:37:48
"Go Big or Go Home"..... We use that phrase a lot (at least in the USA) as a means of encouraging people to dive headlong into things, with gusto and 100% commitment. On this episode we talk about 3 different posts I recently saw on FB homesteading groups that were indicative of that mentality and why I think it is a REALLY bad approach to homesteading.
S3E125 A Teenager's Perspective On Being Raised On A Homestead
17 Apr 2022
00:49:10
On today's episode I am joined once again by my son, Brian Jr. He shares his perspective of what growing up on a homestead has meant to him. We talk about the lessons he's learned, the positive aspects as well as the negative aspects. And we talk about whether or not he plans on homesteading in the future.
S3E123 Raising Kids on the Homestead: Lessons in Responsibility
04 Apr 2022
00:33:32
On today's episode we are talking about how growing up on a homestead gives up opportunities to teach our kids responsibility. This is an episode that probably is more about what we've done wrong than what we've done right. But, I hope you find it helpful as you navigate the tricky waters of giving your kids the right levels of responsibility.
S3E122 Raising Kids on the Homestead: Lessons In Death and Loss
28 Mar 2022
00:32:00
This is week's episode is a difficult one. As a society, I think we have a tendency to avoid dealing with death and loss. And so I fully expect that this will end up being the least downloaded episode ever on this podcast. But, I think it is so important that we talk about death. And I think that if we do it right, kids raised on a homestead will have a much better perspective on death and a much better ability to process it.
