070: I DON’T TRUST THEM: Trusting People at Work20 May 202100:40:02

Navigating trust dynamics in the workplace can be challenging, especially when you don't have the luxury of choosing your colleagues.

Unlike personal relationships where trust is a cornerstone, work relationships can often feel like a trade-off between trust and recognition for your contributions. However, this dichotomy is a misconception.

In fact, I argue that embracing trust is a crucial factor in bringing out your best self at work. In this episode, I delve into both apparent and hidden aspects of trusting your colleagues in the corporate setting. I explore how skepticism can inadvertently erode your own trustworthiness and how choosing to trust can elevate your performance and foster a healthier team environment.

While it might seem idealistic, I present compelling reasons why trusting others, even in the face of uncertainty, is a pragmatic and astute strategy that benefits both you and your team.

Join me in unraveling the intricacies of trust in the workplace and discovering the transformative power of this mindset.

069: Is Perfectionism Your Blindspot?13 May 202100:38:48

Perfectionism can be insidious, manifesting in subtle ways that hinder the progress of even the brightest minds and high-achievers. It's possible to underestimate your own perfectionist tendencies, and that's where the trouble lies.

Join me in this episode as I shed light on the covert aspects of perfectionism that might be undermining your goals without your awareness. I'll equip you with strategies to combat these tendencies and share two key concepts that will help you break free from the grip of perfectionism.

By adopting these approaches, you'll not only sidestep the pitfalls of perfectionism but also accelerate your goal achievement with less stress and anxiety.

Ultimately, you'll cultivate a newfound trust in your ability to follow through and succeed, without diluting your aspirations or succumbing to self-doubt.

068: MENTORS VS. COACHES VS. FRIENDS … Where to go for support06 May 202100:32:26

In this episode, we cover how best to utilize friends, mentors, and coaches to get you the informed support you need to achieve your goals faster with a lot less drama.

Getting the support you need is critical to enjoying your job and being great at it.  Most people would believe that.  But it’s amazing how many smart people either don’t ask for help at all.  Or they aren’t strategic about who they ask for help.

Whether we realize it or not, most people gravitate to asking a safe resource for help vs. the right resource.

In this episode, we cover how you’re never too smart or experienced to ask for help and how best to utilize friends, mentors, and coaches to get you the informed support you need to achieve your goals faster with a lot less drama.

067: Use Badly Delivered Feedback to Your Advantage29 Apr 202100:35:47

Feedback is a powerful tool for personal growth and progress, yet it's often mishandled in the workplace.

But today, I'm not here to dwell on that issue. Instead, I want to empower you to navigate messy feedback without letting it turn into a mess for your own development journey.

Feedback, when given thoughtlessly or critically, can be challenging to digest without taking it personally. The key is to sift through it all, extracting the relevant parts and not allowing it to dent your self-worth.

I know it's not always easy, especially when feedback comes across harshly from figures of authority. The temptation to internalize it as a personal flaw is real, but it's essential to break free from this pattern.

In this episode, I provide strategies to transform poorly delivered feedback into a catalyst for growth. It's time to harness even the messiest feedback to your benefit and emerge stronger and more resilient.

However, the ace up the achiever's sleeve is their attitude. Their triumph lies in their perspective towards the goal, with thoughts that steer their actions.

It's astonishing how many people have a career plan but hardly put it to use – seldom following, reviewing, or even glancing at it throughout the year.

It's a squandered opportunity, akin to ignoring the lowest-hanging fruit. Yet, simply telling you this won't likely spur action; we tend to evade beneficial tasks. It's a quirk of our brain's design. Instead, let's focus on what's slipping through your fingers by neglecting your career plan.

What do you forfeit by not investing just 15-20 minutes daily in it? Join me in the latest episode of The Career Reset Podcast, where I'm delivering five compelling reasons to prioritize your career plan in 2021, along with the missed opportunities you'll regret if you don't seize the reins.

051: Is it time to change careers?19 Nov 202000:33:09

The dilemma "I think I want to change careers" is one I encounter frequently.

Usually, people struggle with that back and forth for a while. And if that’s you, then you absolutely need to listen to this episode.

How do you know if it’s time to change careers? How do you know it’s not just a phase or a quick or easy way out of a bad situation?

Let's cut to the chase: swapping careers isn't a walk in the park. It's no quick-fix solution, and it definitely won't come easy. So, before you take the plunge, you better be certain. Here’s what I DON’T recommend you do:

- Don't jump at the first neat idea.
- Don't quit and figure it out later.
- Don't make any sudden moves if you’re feeling fed-up, exhausted, and angry.

I’m not saying you can’t figure it out, but why make success harder than it has to be?

WARNING… what I’m going to suggest you do isn’t sexy or a quick fix. This work is going to take some effort from you.  But I’m telling you if you put this effort in upfront, you’ll have a much easier time in the back end.

And by the way - if you’re looking for a sexy quick fix to change careers, it’s probably a sign you're seeking change for the wrong reasons.

The concept of "Success Intolerance" is explored in this episode as a mindset challenge that involves the brain's resistance to pursuing success due to discomfort.

The episode defines and discusses this phenomenon, offers insights on recognizing its presence in a work context, and provides strategies for effectively addressing and overcoming it.

048: Drama Dependency29 Oct 202000:36:26

In this episode, we’re talking about something I call drama dependency.  I made up this terminology, but it’s based on real cognitive-behavioural principles.

I love the way it sounds … drama dependency… it sounds so dramatic just saying it.  So meta. That’s why it’s so perfect.

It’s exactly as it sounds - we get dependent on our own drama.  We get unconsciously dependent on something at work being a problem so that we can avoid a bigger problem (usually of our own making).

And you know this is a real thing because you know those people who are like that.  Everything is an issue.  Nothing can be solved.  Or they’ve been complaining about the same thing for years and don’t do anything about it.

You probably have someone like that on your team.  We totally notice it in other people… but as always, you completely miss when you’re doing it.

So let’s explore if you are creating and depending on your own drama.  We’re going to talk about why we get drama dependent, how to recognize the signs, and how to start practicing being drama free.

This episode is for both the perfectionists who know they’re perfectionists and the folks who don’t know they’re perfectionists.

So it’s basically for all human beings. Because perfectionism shows up in so many ways.  This isn’t just for those people who try to make their work perfect or get upset when there’s a hair out of place. It’s for anyone who has a goal that they just can’t seem to achieve.  It’s for anyone who lets fear of failure stop them from taking action.

If that’s you, you may be dealing with the perfectionist myth without even knowing about it, and it could be getting in the way of your career potential.

Imposter Syndrome is a common experience in many people's careers, but this episode reframes it as a lie generated by the brain.

By shifting the perspective, Imposter Syndrome can be seen as an indicator of success rather than a source of suffering or self-doubt, providing a fresh way to approach this common phenomenon.

Here’s to Imposter Syndrome being a sign of success!

044: Serious Goal Setting20 Aug 202000:32:44

"Serious Goal Setting" in your career involves going beyond vague dreams and truly committing to a goal with actionable steps. Most people settle for generic aspirations, but this episode emphasizes the importance of taking your goals seriously and offers a three-step process for effective goal setting.

The episode discusses why many goals remain unfulfilled, the reasons people often overlook the significance of goal setting, the impact of career goals on your life, and provides concrete steps to create a serious goal.
