Why It’s So Hard to Leave an Abusive Relationship; Reflections on Surviving Kidnapping and Escaping the Clutches of a Narcissistic Sociopath with Kristi Christensen31 Aug 202300:31:47

Send us a text

Ever wonder why victims of abuse often remain with their abusers? The answer may lie in an insidious psychological phenomenon known as trauma bonds. We discuss research and Patrick Carnes' book, "Betrayal Bond: Breaking Free of Exploitive Relationships." These unhealthy emotional ties, forged in fear and a primal need to survive, can be incredibly difficult to break. Join us as we shed light on their chilling formation, from the manipulative love-bombing stage to the point where the bond solidifies. Explore the primitive parts of our nervous system at play and delve into the compelling dynamics that drive victims of abuse deeper into these bonds.

This episode also brings the abuse cycle, cognitive dissonance, and the concept of intermittent positive reinforcement under the microscope. Armed with insights from Lundy Bancroft's enlightening book 'Why Does He Do That?', we navigate the baffling mood changes of the abuser and the consequent emotional turmoil faced by the victim. From feelings of low self-esteem to fear of retribution, we examine the daunting barriers that make breaking free a Herculean task. Look out for signs that might indicate you or someone you know is caught in a trauma bond and understand the abuse of power that often lurks within these relationships.

But there's always a way out. In the final leg of this episode, we focus on strategies to shatter these toxic bonds. Through establishing a safety plan, setting boundaries, and seeking support, victims can reclaim their lives from the clutches of abuse. Listen to the heartening story of Christy Christensen, who bravely managed to sever her trauma bond. Remember, it is possible to break free and start anew - tune in, find hope, and heal with us on the Hero Within podcast.

Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.

Do you feel weighed down with the burdens of life?

What's your reaction to the thought that our burdens can actually give us spiritual traction to help us progress?

Our guest today is my good friend, Kristi Kearl and she shares her remarkable insights on the story of the rich young ruler from the Bible.

Today in Part 1, you will learn:

*The rarely quoted tenderness in this story and how the Savior saw so much good in the young ruler and wanted him to be close, just as the Lord sees so much good in us and wants us to also draw near to Him.

*The importance of recognizing and removing unnecessary burdens in our life that are blocking us from feeling close to the Lord.

*The importance of asking the Lord, "What lack I yet?"

*To remove unnecessary burdens to make living the gospel more joyful.

*Ways to make the Sabbath day more meaningful and enjoyable for your family.

How have your sacrifices become blessings?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!   Our guest would love to hear your feedback too! If you'd like to support the podcast, please follow/subscribe to be alerted to upcoming episodes and also, leave a review.

The Scales That Fell From My Eyes On Mother's Day14 May 202300:08:40

Send us a text

Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day can be a really hard day!  It can trigger us and we can feel incredibly inadequate in comparison to the glowing descriptions of mothers we hear about.

Today you  will learn one reason why it might hurt so bad.

I also share a personal mother's day story in which I struggled.

I realized I was unnecessarily suffering because of faulty thinking on my part.

I share some thoughts about one of my favorite scriptures in the Bible, in John 10:10.

I discuss how the Lord healed my blindness so that the shackles fell from my eyes and I was able to see things the way the Lord did, which helped me to feel joy on Mother's Day!

What have your experiences been like on Mother's Day?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!   Also, please follow/subscribe to be alerted to upcoming episodes.

Wishing you lots of love on your own hero’s journey,

Mama's Mental Health Matters; Reflections on Intentionally Choosing Children with Jacqueline Baird06 May 202300:18:35

Send us a text

Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.

Today we reflect on our conversation with our guest Jacqueline Baird and her journey to motherhood.

If you haven't heard Part 1 and Part 2 of Jacqueline's touching story, click here to listen to her heartaches, trauma and miracles in becoming a mom.

May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month.  Women are at risk of complications from childbirth, including death and black women are nearly three times more likely to die after childbirth than white women.  Serena Williams, famous tennis pro, was almost one of them.

Serena shares her story in the book, "Arrival Stories: Women Share Their Experiences of Becoming Mothers," by Amy Schumer and Christy Turlington Burns.

Serena was dismissed multiple times when requesting postnatal medical care and nearly died of a blood clot in her lungs.  She said,  "Giving birth to my baby, it turned out, was a test for how loud and how often I would have to call out before I was finally heard."

We discuss the symptoms of maternal mental health conditions.

Who is at risk of maternal mental health conditions?

How do maternal mental health conditions impact mom, baby and the family?

How do other cultures support new moms?

What was your experience in being taken care of as a new or experienced mama?  How did you take care of your mental health as a mom?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!  Our guests sure value your feedback too! We really appreciate it!  Also, please follow/subscribe to be alerted to upcoming episodes.

Wishing you lots of love on your own hero’s journey,
xoxo, Karen

Send us a text

Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.

Today our guest Jacqueline Baird continues her colorful journey to motherhood as she and her husband, Josh, intentionally chose children again and again throughout their marriage, despite the many sacrifices they both made.

If you haven't heard Part 1, click here to listen to the first part of their story, starting with their love story and desire to have several children.

Today in Part 2, Jacqueline continues sharing the unexpected twists and turns,  heartbreak and trauma, as well miracles and how these experiences impacted her and her husband in their marriage.

She shares how they each grieved differently and it led to some conflict that they had to work through.  At times, they weren't on the same page regarding children, as they previously had been.

But as they focused on their blessings, they grew in gratitude towards parenting and this helped them gain perspective during the normal annoyances in family life.

Despite all the struggles, they grew closer and more unified.  Their love for each other deepened and they knew that family is what life is all about and they were willing to make additional sacrifices.

Jacqueline explains how having children was their number one goal and it's what brought them joy in this life.   Eventually, they exhausted all options and they turned to surrogacy in hopes of adding another child to their family.

Have you and your spouse had any challenges or conflict in your decision to have children?  What did you learn?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and our guests sure value your feedback too! We really appreciate it!  Also, please follow to be alerted to upcoming episodes.

Wishing you lots of love on your own hero’s journey,

Send us a text

Hi!
I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.

Today I reflect on my recent conversation with my friend Jamie Berris earlier this week and I continue the conversation about how we are all projecting or absorbing projections.

If you haven't listened to Jamie's story, you'll want to hear  Part 1 and Part 2,  where Jamie describes her journey from feeling depleted physically and emotionally to feeling empowered and removing blocks to achieving her full potential.

In today's episode, you'll learn:

*What is projecting?

*Why do people project?

*How can we be aware when someone is projecting onto us?

*How can we not absorb others' false projections about us?

*How to deal with defensiveness when someone is projecting on us.

*How to be proactive instead of reactive with projections.

How have you been able to protect yourself from projections? How did you deal with your defensiveness?   What did you learn?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and our guests sure appreciate your feedback too! I really appreciate it!  Also, please follow to be alerted to upcoming episodes.

Wishing you lots of love on your own hero’s journey,
xoxo, Karen

Closing thoughts: Thanks so much for listening!   Please share this episode with your loved ones and spread the love to bless others!

In Part 2, Symone Fairchild and I unpack the transformational power of overcoming with divine support.  Symone founded Eye on DV, and is creating a sanctuary for those battered by abuse, proving that even in the clutches of darkness, faith can be the beacon leading to empowerment and renewal.  Be sure to hear Part 1.

Symone is an actress with a deep-rooted connection to God, who guides her and enables her every step of her life.  With Him, she faced and conquered fears, leading to a portrayal so powerful it could only be described as heavenly. It's a testament to the idea that when we tap into our spirituality, we can create art that doesn't just entertain, but also heals and inspires.

She also discusses parenting, not passing down generational trauma, and how she empowers the unique spark within him as an empath, in a world that often demands conformity. Our discussion carves out the importance of fostering emotional intelligence and spiritual awareness in our children. She shares several dreams, including her "God is awesome parties!" This episode promises to leave you with a heart full of hope and an invitation to join our ever-growing community of support and positivity through our various channels.

Thank you for listening, for your engagement and for your support to share our healing messages!
