The Dandy Dandelion and Why She Deserves Better09 Jul 202100:21:43

So a little while ago, my podcast editor requested an episode on dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). As an herbalist, I assume everyone knows all about dandelion because it’s such a stand out plant friend thanks to all that she has to offer us. Almost every herbalist I’ve interviewed seems to mention it, right back to my very first episode interviewing Missy Rohs of the Arctos School of Herbal & Botanical Studies. Missy loves dandelions! However, when I accidentally saw a commercial for “weed killer” starring an oh-so capable man lording over his unwitting prey, spray bottle in hand. News flash: we aren’t at war with the plants, people!

Far from it, in fact. So in this episode I familiarize you with some of the history and lore surrounding this wonderful plant friend. We’ll talk about how it got its name and how you can spot its many, many imposters. We’ll touch on one of the best way to get herbal medicine on board which is in your food. You are what you eat, right?

So sit back, relax, and lend an ear to learn the ins and outs of the oh so dandy Dandelion.

Jim McDonald Loves Sustainability, Teaching, and Weeds!16 Jun 202101:02:44

What can we say about Jim McDonald? He’s quirky, funny, talented, knowledgeable, and kind. In this super-fun conversation, I get down and dirty with Jim talking about sustainability and conservation, stewardship, and how teaching has changed in the current, internet-driven world. And Jim shares with us some great stories and knowledge around one of his favorite groups of medicinal plant friends, weeds! You know, the plants that are everywhere because they are helpers no matter where they grow.

You can find Jim on Facebook, on Instrgram, and via both his websites, Herbcraft.org & Herbcraft.podia.com

In 1994, Jim McDonald's life changed when he drank tea from a wild plant he harvested from the land he lived upon.  Since those first sips of strange tea, his life in the woods and meadows of southeast Michigan has been centered on the plants & ecosystems of that land, and how he might share their virtues to restore wellness with those around him.  Jim's approach to herbcraft is deeply rooted in the land he lives upon, and blends traditional European influences with 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he conveys with story, experience, humor, common sense and lore

How Amanda Furbee Found & Followed her Herbalist's Path14 May 202100:46:37

Hi everyone. I’m so excited for this episode’s guest! Her name is  Amanda Furbee, owner of the Herb Shoppe on Mississippi and Portland, Oregon. In this episode, Amanda and I will talk plants, formulating, our approaches to medicinal values, and the amazing way that Amanada found herself on an unexpected Herbalist’s Path that carried her from one coast to the other, eventually taking up the charge of the Herb Shoppe, which is more than just a store, but rather an institution with rich history (it was the first place I studied under the previous owner!). So I hope you enjoy this super fun conversation.

At  the Herb Shoppe she & her team are dedicated to providing quality herbal medicine to their community. Not only do they offer bulk herbs & custom blends, but also offer educational opportunities (including their “Make Your Own" Series & internships) and practitioner services. At root, Amanada and the Herb Shoppe really strive to connect with their neighbors to make healthy choices accessible to their neighbors and beyond. Find them on social media here: Herb Shoppe on Instagram;

An Herb Day Tribute to Cascade Anderson Geller01 May 202100:30:23

HAPPY HERB DAY! How lucky I am to be able to live up here on Mt. Hood, a place with so much abundance of life especially in the Spring. In fact, this episode was recorded out in my local forested riverway. And as I watch the river wend its way through the landscape, I take a moment to reflect on my own Herbalist’s Path and the influential people who guided my way. Although I’ve been fortunate to study with some brilliant herbal teachers, there’s one woman that planted the seed of all seeds and my encounters with her brief, they profoundly shaped my journey as an herbalist and healer. That woman is Cascade Anderson Geller.

An herbal practitioner and educator for over 30 years, Cascade was an herbalist, teacher and passionate environmental activist. She was one of the first generations of herbalists to rejuvenate herbalism in the 70’s during a time when it had been almost entirely pushed into obscurity in the United States. Cascade was on the faculty of three naturopathic colleges in the US and has lectured widely throughout North America. She taught classes and led herb walks all around the world and closer to home in Oregon. Her sweet voice shared all sorts of wisdom, from plant uses to clinical pearls, to connection with place, to encouraging a strong sense of activism to protect our beautiful places from poisons and destruction. She was a cherished member of the herbal community until she passed into the light on Herb Day, May 4th, 2013.

Nourishing Nettles: Medicinal Zing Worth the Sting16 Apr 202100:32:53

This episode is about Nettles. Yes, “those”nettles. Urtica diotica. The “stinging” ones. But there’s a ton of medicinal zing other than the (still medicinal) sting. How about a nettle tea? Or nettle Pesto? What!?

Yeah! Nettles are actually one of the most nutrient  dense plants we have to work with in our world and they can be used as food and medicine in so many ways. It’s full of vitamins, minerals, protein, & chlorophyll. The benefits of nettle are far reaching from young to old, from a mommy-to-be to an allergy sufferer. Yes, even the sting can be helpful with inflammation in particular to musculoskeletal pain. Of course, stinging yourself for health benefits is not for the faint of heart, but if you try it, we’d love to hear about it! That sting can also make harvesting a little tricky. In this episode, I go over some things to keep in mind to keep both yourself and the plants safe. Check out a video on safely harvesting nettles here. So join me in taking the nasty out of the nettle because nettles are neato!

Today's podcast is a super special treat. I had the honor of interviewing Liz Neves, a beautiful herbalist and healer, dream guide, reiki practitioner, living and teaching in Lenapehoking (mainly Brooklyn, NY). She's also the author of  Northeast Medicinal Plants: Identify Harvest and use 111 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness (Timber Press)., as well as being a woman offering a really cool new program called INFUSE. Her classes are inspired by herbalism, earth-based spirituality, and ancient wisdom teachings. Her herbalist’s path is led by her experiences and guidance from dreams. Liz believes we learn our greatest lessons directly from the natural world, from dreams, from the plants, and from our own internal guidance.

This interview with Liz felt healing in and of itself. We discuss favorite herbs, some favorite people and teachers, and some favorite resources for enhancing your own education. We discuss what it’s like to really explore your own connection to plants, to place, and two each other. She even guides us on a fantastic meditation (37:00)  and you're definitely gonna want to tune in for that.

Liz shares some wonderful resources she uses to keep tabs on which of our plant friends are struggling & thriving, where, and when. Check the end of these show notes for links.

Using Herbs To Keep You Warm During A Winter Storm19 Feb 202100:23:56

Did you get hit by all those wild winter storms? Here at our home on Mt. Hood in Oregon, we had 21 inches of snow fall; places west are covered freezing rain. Jack Frost has certainly had his way with us all here, February 2021. Snow & ice covering places like Texas that are ill-prepared to handle such weather. Weel, we're here to help.  I want to share some delicious ways you can use herbs to keep you warm during a wild, crazy winter snow storm.

Herbs are amazing, especially the common culinary ones in your kitchen cabinet. The plants we talk about in this episode are commonly available and might already be in your kitchen. Some of the specific plants are Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), and Cayenne (Capsicum annuum). But how do we get these delicious herbs in our bodies? We getting in our kitchens and mix them up with still more killer ingredients like turmeric and black pepper, maple syrup and cardamom. We’ve got some tasty recipes to talk about like ginger tea, Curry, Golden Milk, hot cocoa that’s actually good for you and this 10-Spice Soup that will be a staple in your cold weather kitchen rotation (I know it is in mine!).

And bonus prize: did you know that chocolate has a whole host of health benefits? Yeah! Two great friends of mine, Dr Orna Izakson & Dr. Melissa Berry --both naturopathic doctors in the Portland area-- did a webinar

Licorice Root: the Sweeter Side of Gut Health05 Feb 202100:18:32

This episode is all about licorice. No, not Twizzlers. Nor Red Vines. Licorice root is our star today, and good for our bodies in so many ways. Glycyrrhiza glabra is the Latin name of this particular plant. The “Glycyrrhiza" part of the name actually means "sweet root" and what an amazing root it is. It has been used for thousands of years as a "harmonizing herb" in traditional Chinese medicine. It brings balance and it's really, really sweet and delicious. It can help make other formulations much more palatable because there are quite a few herbs that are pretty gross and nobody wants to taste them especially in our society where we really love sweet.

We’ll learn about the variety of properties that lend licorice so well to keeping our gut happy; licorice is demulcent, mucilaginous, and even a  great immunomodulator.  (Did you guys know that  60 to 70% of your immune cells come from your gut!?) And it’s so much more than just the gut; we have other body systems made up of the same mucosal tissue. So what’s good for our guts is also good for, say, our skin and respiratory systems.

So tune in and find out all about what licorice can do for a happier, healthier you.

Herbs to Rev Your Digestive Fire!19 Jan 202100:29:06

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Trust your gut,” right? There might be more truth in that statement than you might think. Our gut is about digestion --all about the power of our digestive organs to process and absorb what we eat while also being able to burn off waste products-- but there’s so much more to it. If our digestive fire isn’t burning up to snuff, unprocessed foods can cause inflammation, evidenced by things like hunger or bloating, indigestion, intestinal cramps, constipation, and gassiness. However, when our digestive fire is in balance, we see things like nutrient absorption, better metabolism, obviously better digestion, but also a sense of perception, cellular metabolism, and mental assimilation.Mental wellbeing and your digestive health are directly connected.

And wouldn’t you know it, but there’s a variety of herbs that can help fire up that internal furnace and get that digestive motor revved up. Our featured plant guests on this episode are garlic (Allium sativum), horseradish (Armoracia rusticana), ginger (Zingiber officinale), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), & cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanni). These are all delightfully delicious pantry items so good in so many dishes. We talk about some of the ways to get this medicine to your

3 Herbs for Inflammation in the Gut06 Jan 202100:22:45

Hey, first podcast of 2021! Since the whole world is hollering “New year, new you!”,  I figured I'd talk about how you can work on healing your body from the inside out. So I'm just going to share with you a few of my absolute favorite herbs that I love to turn to when I have issues of inflammation in the gut. Our gut health is absolutely essential to healthy immune function, emotional wellbeing, and overall vitality of your entire body. Today, there's over 3 million Americans with irritable bowel syndrome and there are so many others suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, skin conditions, all of the “-itis” issues, and sometimes inexplicable auto-immune disorders. It’s clear we have major problems going on and you know where it stems from? The gut.

You’ll find some overlap with previous episodes, but that’s because so many wonderful plants can help more than one condition. Isn’t that lovely? In fact, all three of the herbs featured here are multi-taskers: Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), & Marshmallow (Althea oficinalis). We talk about how these herbs act to coat & soothe the smooth tissues of your gastrointestinal tract and how multiple body systems can benefit from the same herb because of similar tissues.

Using Bitter Herbs for Better Gut Health30 Dec 202000:21:12

Gut check! Check 1...Check 2… Is your Digestion in Question?

I don’t know about you, but holiday merriment and comfort food indulgence have left my digestion a bit questionable. So I figured we would do a little episode all about gut health and why it's so important in our every day. Because we all know that it's directly connected to the health of our brain, the health of our immune system, and just our overall health and well-being.And I’ve got great news! There are herbs that can help you keep your digestive system in tip top shape.

Bitters are really great because they help treat your body as an integrated whole, and you can use as a preventative medicine, even. Hopefully, after hearing this, you can really see that the use of bitters is critical to your gut health... and to your overall health. There's an awful lot of magic and power in these incredibly beautiful and precious plants. And today I figured we'd take a little bit of time to chat about some of my favorites: Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), Dandelion (araxacum officinale), Gentian (Gentiana sps.) including my hometown hero, Mountain Bog Gentian (Gentiana calycosa), & Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium)

Herbalism for Kids of All Ages: Kristine Brown's Herbalist's Path16 Dec 202000:46:25

In this episode, I’m talking with educator, author, herbalist Kristine Brown. Kristine has devoted much of her life to creating herbal education curriculum for our youngest budding herbalists. We talk about how she sought to fill that blank spot in educational herbalism by creating her long-running zine, authoring books that make herbalism approachable, and creating new class offerings to share her sense of wonder with young people and teach them how they can communicate with the plant world. It’s not a one way street, you know. We’ll also talk about some of our favorite books and our favorite plant friends. So turn your ear over here ‘cause this one is jam packed.

Kristine Brown, RH(AHG) is a practicing traditional community herbalist and mother of four children and two step children, two of which she homeschooled for 11 years. She studied with Rosemary Gladstar of Sage Mountain and has spent countless hours of research and study through her own pursuit with herbalists such as Isla Burgess, Gail Faith Edwards, and Kat Maier. She has taught classes since 2004, has presented at many herbal conferences around the country, and has run numerous herbal kids' camps both locally and nationally.. Kristine is very active in her local herbal community. She is the writer and illustrator of the online children's publication, Herbal Roots zine, an award winning publication that is used around the world to teach children the m

How Adaptogens Can Help You Through Tough Stressful Times09 Dec 202000:31:56

It's no secret that life has been mighty tough for the majority of people these days. Whether these times have you suffering from stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, immune issues, or emotional trauma, adaptogenic herbs can offer a great helping hand to support you and your body during these trying times. Adaptogens produce an increase in bodily resistance and vitality. They help to support your body's metabolic function and they restore balance to your body and the systems within your body.

In this episode, we’ll explore exactly how the herbs, plants, & mushrooms work on all our body systems to help us maintain homeostasis, which is basically keeping your body in balance and stable within all of its systems. Then, we’ll talk about some of my favorite adaptogens that I use for myself: Reishi Mushrooms or Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera), and Tulsi or Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum).

These are the medicines that work for me. Yours might be something different, finding the right adaptogen for you can help support your nervous system, support your immune system and your body's overall function to keep you as strong as can be and ready to navigate all of the challenges that life throws at you.

Plant Spirit Medicine & The Lessons From Plants, with Scott Kloos03 Dec 202001:17:13

“I’m so grateful to be living in times like this that demand so much of me.”

You know, we’ve spent a lot of time learning about plants. Have you ever stopped to wonder what we could learn from plants? Scott Kloos has. And the plants have taught him many lessons about such things as reciprocity, nurturing, and cultural evolution (just to name a few). Scott shares with us his deep passion for searching out ways to transition our current cultural relationship with plants (and all things, really) from a transactional way of being to a more relational way of being; a view in which we cease to view our landscape as a commodity and instead return ourselves as living participants within that landscape. Towards the end of the episode, Scott shares with us one of his plant songs (more of which can be found here). So let us all cast our glance up from the ground and outward, breathing in the bigger, wider world of plants.

Scott Kloos is an herbalist, ceremonialist, author, wildcrafter, plant medicine maker, and aspiring integral ecologist. Although he says the plants founded it, he stewards The School of Forest Medicine as well as Cascadia Folk Medicine, maker of high-quality  herbal extracts from the native plants of the region. He authored

Culinary Herbs, Part 2: The Medicinal Side of the Sweets In Your Holiday Treats!25 Nov 202000:31:53

Welcome back for the second part of our exploration of the herbal medicine chest in your cabinet! Last episode,we talked about savory culinary herbs and how they can help you & your family. In this episode, we’ll look at delicious spices that show up in our sweeter holiday fare although no herbs we’ll discuss are actually sweet. They do, however, have the spice & warmth complimented so well by more sugary profiles. Afterall, we can’t have a spice cake without the spices, can we? The plant friends featured here are Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), and Peppermint (Mentha × piperita), well, all the mints, really.

Some of the commonalities shared by our herbs last time we see today too. Most are carminative, which means they “ease gasiness, bloating, & tummy upset”. That’s a must during  holiday feasting, right? Also helpful for the chilly weather days & nights, most are very warming, keeping our blood flowing so all those fingers and toes stay protected from the nippy air. Again, these plant friends have long historical traditions and lore.So we’ll touch on some historical points as well, often stretching all the way back to ancient Greece & Rome. How cool is that?

All of us at the Herbalist’s Path hope you have a good (if not necessarily conventional) holiday season in this crazy 2020.

Culinary Herbs, Part 1: Savory Medicine Already in your Pantry!19 Nov 202000:25:38

Did you know that there might be a whole entire medicine chest in your kitchen cupboard?

As your cooking for the holidays, we’re going to look at what herbal goodness we can slip into your meals (savory) & treats (sweet, next episode!). In this episode, we’ll talk about savory culinary herbs and how they can help you & your family. Here we go to Scarborough Fair --parsley, sage, rosemary, & thyme (JK. No parsley today.) In actuality, the plant friends featured are Sage (Salvia officinalis), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Oregano (Origanum vulgare), Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus), Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum annuum), & Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

You’ll find some commonalities shared by all our herbs today. All of this episode’s herbs are carminative, which means they “ease gasiness, bloating, & tummy upset”. I’d say that’s a must during our holiday feasting, right? Additionally, many are antimicrobial, antioxidant, astringent, and/or toning for a few different body systems.

One of the coolest things about these plant friends is the long culinary and medicinal traditions behind them! Black Pepper was even used as currency once upon a time! So we’ll touch on some historical points as well, often stretching all the way back to ancient Greece & Rome. How cool is that?

All of us at the Herbalist’s Path hope you have a good (if n

How Stress Can Lower Your Immune System13 Nov 202000:27:11

How does stress impact your immune system?

Have you ever been super stressed out, spread way too thin, and next thing you know, you’ve gotten sick (which certainly doesn’t help the stress!)? Well, stress and what it does to your body can really adversely affect your immune system. And right now-- post-election, pre-holidays, global pandemic-- we’re all worn out and worn down. But there are things we can do (and herbs we can use) to help our brains stay chill so our bodies can stay strong. There’s lifestyle habits we can use like yoga or deep breathing exercises, connecting with others (using other pathways when physical closeness isn’t an option), connecting with yourself, and getting outside!

There are herbs we can use to help too. The class of herbs I seek when I need body/mind support is Adaptogens. These herbs help our bodies to adapt to stressors, regulating and supporting our neuroendocrine & immune systems. Some nourish, some boost immune system. The herbs we’ll talk about in this episode are Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) , and Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera)

Immune Stimulant Herbs, Antivirals, Antibacterials, What The Heck Are They & When Do I Need Them?04 Nov 202000:20:14

We’ve all heard that we should take echinacea for a cold, or garlic is good for you, or elderberry. All of it’s true, but have you ever wondered why or how these plants work their magic? This episode is a big shout out to Immune Stimulatants! These virus & bacteria-fighting herbs ramp up your immune system to help fight illness. They are best employed at the beginning of symptoms, but can help through the duration too.

We’ll learn a bit about how the immune system works and some of the specific ways that broad spectrum compounds found in medicinal plants create a breadth of actions and applications. These compounds can potentially outsmart the bugs that have already outsmarted synthesized antibiotics and antivirals. And some of the plant friends --like garlic, onion, or ginger-- may already be in your kitchen! How cool is that!? (For more info on some specific herbs, check out Episode 10 “Herbs to Boost Your Immune System, Some of my Favs!”)

Immune stimulators are quick to act, but the effects are short-lived. Hence, they’re best used for short-term acute treatment or prevention. We’ll talk about the best ways to use them to protect your health and recover, but not over medicate (which, yes, you can do with herbs too).

But the best part is, in addition to putting cleaner medicine in your body, it’s cleaner for our planet too. At a time when synthetic medication is showing up in d

In this episode, we talk all things great and small; the changing face of herbalism education in the information age and the dilution of knowledge by streams of misinformation, to our fire cider friend, to Nicole’s current favorite herb, Tulsi (available here).

Improve Respiratory Health With These 5 Herbs22 Oct 202000:34:40

“When we draw in a breath, we share that air with all other human beings and all other life on our planet. Through respiration, our oneness with trees becomes a manifest fact, and our communion with the oceans has immediate impact. The reality of the planetary whole reveals itself, with implications for all human life, through the circulation of the gases and the energy of the atmosphere. This vision underlies holistic healing as much as it does ecology. The anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system is a complex and beautiful embodiment of integration and wholeness.” ~~David Hoffmann, Medical Herbalism

There are various ways to think about the way herbs work and act on your respiratory tract.  Many of us are still dealing with the aftermath of the wildfire smoke, or some even still in the middle of it.  The lungs of our planet, and the lungs of our body are screaming together! And then we have the CoronaVirus. We all share the same air. It's so very important that we try to come together and help stop this virus by wearing a mask, washing our hands, and taking care of ourselves, our immune & respiratory systems.

So let's talk about some of the herbs that can help us with our own lungs, and our collective lungs of the planet!

Beyond Elderberry! Legend & Lore of the Elder Shrubbery14 Oct 202000:19:23

Ah, elegant Elder, the shrubbery with so much to give. Elderberry syrup is certainly a hot topic these days and rightfully so! Not only is this stuff is a powerhouse when it comes to boosting your immune system and fighting off viruses, it’s delicious too. I mean, with cold and flu season plus a global pandemic, it’s refreshing to have a medicine even the kids are happy to take.

But Elder is so much more than just berries for syrup. Even outside its clinical, medicinal properties, there is an abundance of history and lore surrounding the plant. It’s been presumed a conduit to the realms of fairies and the underworld; and these legends span across multiple cultures. Maybe that’s because this plant is exceptionally useful and it is EVERYWHERE. North America, Europe, Western Asia, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and many pacific islands. It’s almost as if mother nature is begging us to use this plant!

Elder is a veritable “medicine Cabinet” ready for immediate use. From its roots to the stems, leaves, flowers, barks, and berries, there was always a way you could get medicinal benefits from Elder. It’s a shrubbery I love to see winter, spring, summer, and fall. It makes great medicine no matter the time of the year.

It’s My Birthday!!! I’m 42, and About To Share Some of My Journey With You!!!08 Oct 202000:38:30

Have you ever seen a butterfly wrestling to leave its chrysalis? It may seem like an unnecessarily arduous task, but as it works its new, rumpled body & wings out through a small opening, fluid is pushed into the wings, giving them strength & structure once dry. Without this proper distribution, the butterfly would not be able to fly. So you see, by nature, it is this very struggle that breathes a new life into the animal.

This episode is Mel Mutterspaugh's very own herbalist's path, told in her own words, on her 42nd birthday (ya know, life, the universe, and everything). This is the story of growth and struggle and joy and purpose. Mel's mission is to start a movement to inspire an herbalist in every home...again. A return to empowering anyone to find better health with ingredients from their kitchen cabinet to their own backyard. There is such a rich opportunity in this time of global upheaval for every one of us to become a little more self-reliant and, in the process, be kinder to ourselves and kinder to the planet. And Mel wants to help us all access the power of the plants!

Mel has always believed in doing what you love for a living, and for her, that means being surrounded by nature. During the years she spent volunteering and working as a hiking guide, Mel noticed that hikers often brought harsh toxic chemicals with them in backpacks and first aid kits. They were heading out to nature to soothe their souls, but had no idea how the plants s

The Path of Madelyn Mickelberry Morris of Mickelberry Gardens: Plants, Pollinators, & Passion04 Oct 202001:02:23

This episode is a conversation I had back in February (before the world went bizarro) with Madelyn Mickelberry Morris of Mickelberry Gardens. We both share a passion for plant medicine; on our separate herbal paths, our passions organically grew into our respective businesses with all the twists and turns that involves. But we stick close to source, remembering why we are here in the first place: to share nature’s medicine with the People! We talk about all sorts of great things including some of our favorite plant friends and books. We share some really practical information on how a plant becomes a healthy, usable product and ways you can get started in your own kitchen, on your own herbalist’s path. As Madelyn says, “You always have friends when you’re friends with the plants.”

Mickelberry Gardens is the vision of husband and wife team, Matt and Madelyn, who started backyard  beekeeping in Portland back in 2007. When Madelyn discovered that she was extremely sensitive to honeybee stings, their growing apiary moved to Troutdale where, within a year, Matt was working with 20 hives.

Madelyn was already interested in garden medicine, medicinal plants, and home remedies. Her passion started with sustainable food production (because growing your own food is just cool!), then shifted to garden education (because more people feeding each other is even cooler!). Chanc

Herbs to Boost Your Immune System, Some of My Favs!25 Sep 202000:28:16

It’s September 2020. We’ve been talking a lot about back-to-school stress and how to “braintain” with the help of herbal medicine. Our immune systems are probably already a little compromised by stress and emotional fatigue of living in this upside down era; now we get to move into cold & flu season whilst still battling a pandemic virus. Indeed, any cough or sneeze or sniffle puts anyone within earshot into a mild panic (did we mention that stress can compromise an immune system?).

In a time when almost everything seems out of control, today we’re going to talk about how you can be proactive with plant medicine to protect yourself from seasonal assailants. The herb friends we’ll discuss today are:

Garlic (Allium sativum) --so good for your immunity and digestive system. It’s a two’fer! Echinacea (Echinacea purpura) --such a beautiful plant to grow! And powerful preventative medicine.

Astragalus (Astragalus propinquus) --one word: “interferons”. So cool! Keep your ears open. Elder (Sambucus nigra) --this shrubbery (yeah, I said it) provides us layers of medicine, starting with elderflowers, then elderberries (check out this DIY Elderberry Syrup Kit and look below for links to recipes).

These guys are often helpful for more than immunit

Maybe while you’re still working a full-time job (or more)? Or are you a teacher trying to figure out how to do your job without being in a classroom? Or being in a classroom, trying to figure out how to keep you & your students healthy and COVID-free?

Our current time is so stressful and can bring on anxiety. And if you are on the West Coast of the US like we are, you’re probably engulfed in wildfire smoke and maybe you or friends & loved ones are worried about their homes and livelihood. So, in this episode, we’d like to share some plant friends with you that can help support your nerves, calming stress and tonifying your system, helping you learn to adapt to all the stressors that have been flung at us this year.

We’ll learn about adaptogenic herbs that help your body adapt to life’s various stressors whether they be emotional, physical, or spiritual. 🌼Herbal Wisdom: Plant Spirits and Healing Paths with Robin Rose Bennett22 Mar 202400:53:12

Tune into this transformative chat with Robin Rose Bennett, a brilliant herbalist and storyteller, steeped in Wise Woman wisdom. We celebrated the spring equinox, a time for renewal, and dove straight into how we connect with plants for deep healing.

Robin's journey into herbalism, guided by nature's wisdom and spiritual mentors, really hit home for me. She stressed the importance of nourishing connections with nature, especially asking plants for permission before harvesting.

Her insights on healing herbs like Hawthorne and Oatstraw opened up new paths for both physical and spiritual healing. It was more than a talk; it was a reminder of the intertwining of nature, personal growth, and activism in our continuous journey of self-discovery.

Journey the Herbalist's Path of Elise Higley of Oshala Farm31 Aug 202000:56:17

Melissa Mutterspaugh sits down with Elise Higley, owner of Oshala Farm, a 50-acre farm in southern Oregon in its eighth season.  They discuss what it means to be an herbalist and maintain integrity within your own business while providing quality product that empowers others to explore herbs for mind, body, and soul.

Elise’s herbalist path began decades ago in California when she randomly picked up a beautiful, pictorial herb book, inspiring her try herbal remedies. When she did, she was blown away and has been using medicinal herbs since.

Then, at the California School of Herbal Studies, Elise recalls a teacher saying, “We need more herb farmers...” This stuck with her when she moved to Oregon, making her own herbal products, she found a shortage of local sources.  She & her husband, Jeff, decided to incorporating herbs into their farm. Now, years later, Oshala is producing some of the highest-quality herbs available. Melissa notes that the Oshala products she uses are dramatically more fragrant, whole, and potent than previous suppliers.

Elise is part of Our Family Farms, an organization working to protect small farms and create GMO-free seed sanctuaries. A 2013 push to ban genetically-engineered crops in Jackson Co, OR, brought about a ruling that  “deemed GE crops are an ec

6 Herbs for Summer Skin Care18 Aug 202000:26:43

6 Herbs for Summer Skin Care

It’s mid-August and summer is awesome, but our skin is toast! Sunburns, bug bites, cuts, scrapes, bruises; all signs of the season. In today’s episode, we’ll learn about 6 of our favorite foliage friends that can help us heal our summer skin!

Calendula, my Friendula, is a magical wonder when it comes to skin issues. This beautiful plant can be used for any skin condition inflammation and is also antifungal. Great first aid for minor burns. Make yourself a Calendula flower oil infusion to keep with you all year long.

Comfrey is a superhero of wound healing! It’s rich in allantoin, helping grow new skin cells. If you break off the stem of a comfrey plant, the moist allantoin-rich sliminess inside works wonders to cool and soothe your crispy skin.

Aloe is also rich in allantoin, magical slime-like no other! Aloe helps cool inflammation, heal wounds, and as an antifungal. There's a huge list of the things aloe can do for you, both inside and out.

Plantain is one of my absolute favorite plants. It’s an herb that l every human should know because it helps with so many different things!  I wrote in great detail about plantain over here. But we’ll just talk about summer skin issues. Plantain has this amazing ability to draw things out of the skin like splinters

The One Herb Everyone Should Know, & It's Right In Your Backyard!15 May 202000:15:44

There’s one herb that I wish everybody knew, especially you, because it’s awesome for first aid like bug bites, bee stings, cuts , scrapes, and all that,  gut health, tooth infections, and even respiratory health. The herb is Plantain. No, we’re not talkin’ bananas here. We’re talking about Plantago major.  A cool little plant that grows in your sidewalk cracks, along roadsides, and pretty much in all of the places that we as humans have come in to disrupt nature.

  • First Aid: Plantain has this cool little compound called allantoin, and it helps to regenerate cells, pretty cool, eh?
  • Did someone get a little cut or scrape?
  • Little Buzzy Bee get a little too close and sting you? Yup, make yourself a little mash up (poultice) of plantain and plop it right on there. The same thing goes for spider bites, bug bites, snake bites, and all those pesky bug bites.  Y
  • Splinters, or maybe there’s a Thorn literally in your side? You guessed it, plantain can help with that too!
  • Burns, they suck, right? This is where The AfterBurn really comes in Handy!

Mouth or Tooth Infections

So yes, plantain is one of my absolute favorite super bestest plant friends! It’s one I think you should know, your kids (if you’ve got them) should know, your grandma, your

Connecting With The Earth & The Plants with Alex Queatham Co-Founder of Tend And Flourish School of Botanicals08 Apr 202001:06:38

In this episode Alex talks about how we need to Inspire the Ripple Effect of The Importance of Using Plants As Medicine and Food!

She shares precious lessons and memories of her grandparents who lived off of the land and were an incredible influence in her passion for plant medicine. They walked for miles, harvested their own food, and were often found making tinctures from the plants they found on their land in Alabama.

As our world is changing drastically right in front of our eyes, there is a lot to be learned from the way of living the way Alex's grandparents lived.

Being a part of the ecosystem and living in the woods, and getting to know the plants in their natural habitats is an integral part of connecting with the Earth and had a huge impact on the way Alex uses plants as medicine.

Alex is not only a teacher in her own school Tend and Flourish School of Botanicals, co-founded with Crystal Stevens, she runs Tending The WIld Botanicals & she’s also a teacher at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies in Oregon.

Take A Journey Down The Herbalist's Path of Missy Rohs, a Radical Herbalist and The Co-Owner of The Arctos School of Herbal & Botanical Studies21 Feb 202000:45:29

Welcome to our first episode of The Herbalist’s Path where we’re on a mission to inspire a movement where there’s an herbalist in every home, again!

In today’s episode we have a chat with Missy Rohs, herbalist, activist, teacher, and Cofounder of The Arctos School of Botanical of Herbal & Botanicals Studies. We take a deep dive into her Herbalist’s Path where she first got introduced to herbalism through reading Punk Scenes. She joined the Black Cross Health Collective where she first started learning about how to administer first aid in activism situations. She found that she was surrounded by a group of ER nurses, massage therapists, herbalists, nurse practitioners and other health care practitioners, and she needed to learn more about health. She began taking some classes from some of the other Black Cross Health Collective members such as Colette Gardiner, and Krista Olson.

A bit later a new partner got her interested in gardening and took her on weekly hikes. She learned about how you can walk down a path in the forest, and get to know the plants, and how to use them. These plants quickly became her friends!

She later took the leap to learn more and went down south to learn from Michael Moore and Donna Chesner.

Empowering Your Family's Health w/ Herbal Medicine02 Feb 202400:25:02

In this episode you’ll learn about the important role of herbal medicine in the home and gain tips for getting started with using herbs in family healthcare. I shared some of my favorite herbs and how to use them for numerous ailments, specifically focusing on plantain, chamomile, and yarrow.

Herbalism requires a respect for nature and sustainability when sourcing herbs. This is also a gentle reminder about the need for safety and professional medical advice when using herbs, particularly in relation to potential allergies, contraindications with existing medications, and treating specific symptoms or illnesses.

Herbs, Healing, & Entrepreneurship; A Pod-Swap w/ Mason Hutchison of the Herb Rally Podcast26 Jan 202401:04:31

In this episode I did a little pod-swap with my good buddy Mason of the Herb Rally Podcast, and he had me on an episode of the Herbalist Hour.

We talked about my time running of Mountain Mel's, my herbal products company & how Mason & I met over 10 years ago through that.  l shared stories of my journey into herbalism and my experiences owning an apothecary tea & smoothie shop, and my herbal product line. I even talked about the triumphs and struggles along the way. We chatted about the importance of understanding the medicinal benefits of herbs and their role in healthy living, and the importance of herbal education.

Of course, Mason wanted to know what I’m up to with my current projects, including my mentorship program for moms – Apothecary Momma, and her upcoming Holistically Healthy Families Summit.

Oh ya, and herbs! We talked about HERBS! Things like the varying medicinal benefits of herbs like plantain, rosemary and ashwagandha, and the need for more herbal medicine makers.
