406: Histamine Intolerance Symptoms: Everything You Know Is Wrong (And Why A Low Histamine Diet Won’t Stop Chronic Hives)04 Dec 202500:55:48

Do you feel like you get crazy histamine intolerance symptoms as your body reacts to everything — certain foods, smells, stress, or even the weather? Symptoms such as itchy skin, rashes, dermatographia, angioedema, bloating, or headaches that seem to appear out of nowhere are often linked to histamine intolerance.

But before you blame your diet and dive headfirst into a low-histamine diet, know that food isn’t likely to blame. After working with over 1,000 clients, I can tell you that there are deeper, more pressing issues that drive urticaria and chronic hives.

Let’s dive into why you probably don’t have histamine intolerance (despite having all the symptoms), how histamine intolerance differs from MCAS, and what’s really triggering these crazy histamine reactions. From mold exposure to liver detox issues and hormone imbalances, we explore how these hidden factors can lead to ongoing inflammation and itchy skin that just won't quit.

405: Staph aureus + Eczema: Why This Inflammatory Bacteria Is A Problem You Shouldn’t Ignore (Especially When Your Skin Flares) w/ Dr. Peter Lio20 Nov 202500:40:40

Is it just an eczema (atopic dermatitis) flare or could it be something else? Most people don’t realize that Staph aureus could be the hidden skin flare trigger that actively weakens your skin barrier, triggering more inflammation, itchiness, and persistent eczema symptoms. Even if it seems “normal,” the presence of Staph might point to deeper imbalances that need attention.

In this episode, we dig into how Staph aureus, the gut microbiome, environmental toxins, and even air pollution can all contribute to recurring eczema.

Joining me is Dr. Peter Lio, a board-certified dermatologist and respected voice in integrative dermatology. He’s a Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern University and has authored over 100 papers, along with a textbook on Integrative Dermatology.

If you’re ready to understand why your eczema isn’t clearing up, this is a must-listen conversation filled with insight and practical takeaways.

300: Why Research Isn’t Always Right13 Jul 202300:22:20

If you love digging into research to find natural solutions for skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, hives, or seborrheic dermatitis—this episode is for you. While research can be incredibly insightful, there’s a hidden truth: It doesn’t always translate into real-life results. Just because something works in a study doesn’t mean it will work for you.

In this episode, I explore why research outcomes can fall short in clinical practice and how studies may be presented in misleading ways.

294: Dairy vs Non-Dairy Milk: Which Is Better For You, Your Skin + The Planet? (PART 1)25 May 202300:27:55

This is the first of a three-part series exploring the complex debate over dairy vs. dairy-free milk. While you probably want a simple answer about whether dairy is really bad for you, the reality is far more nuanced. After digging into the research, I uncovered surprising (and unsettling) truths about both options—ones that challenge the emotionally-driven narratives we often hear (especially people who eschew a vegan or plant-based lifestyle).

If you’ve ever wondered how dairy fits into your health (and your skin health) or whether plant-based milk is really the superior, healthier choice, this episode is a must-listen.

Did you know the microbiome in your mouth is considered a “gateway” microbiome? It actually has a powerful influence on your gut microbiome. Even more fascinating—the mouth microbiome is closely linked to the placental microbiome, which helps shape a child’s immune system before birth. But what causes your oral microbiome to become inflammatory?

Today Dr. Mark L. Cannon, Professor of Otolaryngology–Dentistry at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine joins me on the show. He's an expert in pediatric oral health with 40+ years of experience. We dive into how the mouth microbiome evolved, what disrupts it, and how it can be a huge hidden source of inflammation impacting your health.

291: Can You Stop Eczema, Allergies + Asthma In Kids? w/ Dr. Chris Thompson04 May 202300:32:26

Ever heard of the atopic triad—eczema, allergies, and asthma? Sometimes called the atopic march, doctors have traditionally held to a “wait and see” approach for kids, which turns out probably isn't the best option, especially in the first year of life. We now know that delayed food introduction in babies has turned out to have profoundly BAD impacts on the rate of food allergies.

Joining me is Dr. Chris Thompson, a Board Certified Otolaryngologist with 25+ years of experience specializing in allergy, sinus, and nasal treatment. He’s a pioneer in procedures like Balloon Sinuplasty and an advocate for sublingual immunotherapy to treat allergies more effectively.

290: Will THIS Help Your Skin Rash (Or Make It Worse)?27 Apr 202300:13:27

If you’ve ever felt defeated after trying natural remedies that worked for others—but only made your skin worse—this episode is for you. When I suffered from dyshidrotic eczema (hand eczema) in 2016, no natural remedies helped, and I was left to turn to topical steroids. Since now working with over 1000 chronic skin problem cases, I know why all these alternative medicine strategies can backfire, making your flares WORSE.

So today, I’m unpacking why one-size-fits-all solutions don’t always work and what it really means when your healing journey looks different from others. Before you assume you’re broken, here’s what you need to know.

289: Using Herbs To Support Chronic Skin Conditions w/ Cassandra Quave, PhD20 Apr 202300:36:51

Let’s bust a myth: Just because something is natural (including food, nutrients, and herbs) doesn’t mean it’s safe or free from triggering a reaction. Yes, you can react to herbal remedies—and it’s time we talked about it honestly. Herbs can be very helpful, but you need to be aware of potential issues before assuming you won't react to them.

To help unpack the science behind botanicals, I’m joined by Dr. Cassandra Quave, a medical ethnobotanist, professor, and award-winning author of The Plant Hunter. She’s a leading expert in medicinal plants and drug discovery who gives it to us straight about what “natural” really means when it comes to your health.

288: Adrenal Fatigue, Steroids + Skin Rashes: What's The Connection? w/ Dr. Izabella Wentz, PharmD13 Apr 202300:38:36

Many people in my audience are interested in adrenal health because steroid exposure is a common issue for many (especially those who end up with HPA axis dysfunction because of the steroids). So, I brought in a very popular expert... on thyroid health. Wait, what's the connection between your thyroid and adrenals? Most people who have thyroid issues end up having some form of adrenal dysfunction. So today, she's giving tips on what to do if you actually have adrenal dysfunction and how you can take back your health.

My guest today is the compassionate, innovative, and solution-focused integrative pharmacist, Dr. Izabella Wentz. Dedicated to finding the root causes of chronic health conditions, her passion stems from her own diagnosis with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in 2009, following a decade of debilitating symptoms. As an accomplished author, Dr. Wentz has written several best-selling books, including the New York Times bestseller Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause, the protocol-based #1 New York Times bestseller Hashimoto’s Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back, and the Wall Street Journal bestseller Hashimoto’s Food Pharmacology: Nutrition Protocols and Healing Recipes to Take Charge of Your Thyroid Health. Her latest book, Adrenal Transformation Protocol, is set to be released on April 18th, 2023. The book focuses on resetting the body’s stress response through targeted safety signals and features a 4-week program that has already helped over 3,500 individuals. The program has an impressive success rate, with over 80% of participants improving their brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, sleep issues, and libido.

Do you have symptoms of adrenal fatigue? If so, what are you doing about it? Let me know in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What is adrenal fatigue (and is it even real)?
  • The feedback loop between your thyroid + adrenals (hello, cortisol!)
  • Why chronic or unprocessed stress (including unresolved trauma) is a very crucial part of the puzzle
  • Dr. Wentz's helpful tips to get better sleep to regulate the circadian rhythm
  • Pituitary suppression from the use of hydrocortisone (as seen in TSW) from a pharmacist perspective
  • Why cholesterol is IMPORTANT!
Quotes

"As the stress progresses and whenever we have low levels of cortisol that are too low, this can also be a signal to the body to make more reverse T3 and to slow down the thyroid gland because thyroid hormone breaks down cortisol." [06:31]

"I joke about positive affirmations are amazing, but they're like putting a Band-Aid over a leaky fishbowl if you're not working on trauma." [26:47]

287: Rosacea Myths (That People Think Are True)06 Apr 202300:17:14

Like other common skin rash conditions, there are many pervasive myths that you can read online or that people think about rosacea that simply is not true!

My hope is that by talking about these six common myths, you’ll discover that there is more to rosacea than a frustrating diagnosis.

Since April is Rosacea Awareness month, I want to dive into common questions to help you connect some dots that will offer insight into your skin (and health as a whole).

So let’s dive in!

In this episode:
  • Is rosacea the same thing as acne?
  • Different types of rosacea + progression to rhinophyma
  • Rosacea common skincare triggers
  • Is rosacea contagious? (Kind of…)
  • Alcohol consumption + risk of rosacea
  • Why rosacea ISN’T a skin-only problem
  • Does rosacea impact only fair skin tones?
Quotes:

Rosacea is not triggered because your face isn’t clean, but harsh exfoliation; strong, drying ingredients in skincare and makeup as well as excessive use of anti-aging products can trigger rosacea.

Though rosacea as a condition isn’t contagious, a Demodex mite infestation that can cause rosacea IS contagious!

286: Is This Normal? (Rashes "Down There" + Hormones Edition) w/ Dr. Jolene Brighten23 Mar 202300:44:42

My audience is people who are struggling with rashes and, let's be honest, there are some rashes that appear in areas that you're not going to want to, you know, show to a Facebook group.

Not only are they uncomfortable physically, but it can be very hard for some to talk to their provider about it. That's why I'm so grateful to today's expert, who is an open book on this topic! She walks us through the age-old question of "Is this normal"?

My guest today is Dr. Jolene Brighten, NMD, women’s hormone expert and prominent leader in women’s medicine. As a licensed naturopathic physician who is board certified in naturopathic endocrinology and a clinical sexologist, she takes an integrative approach in her clinical practice. A fierce patient advocate and completely dedicated to uncovering the root cause of hormonal imbalances, Dr. Brighten empowers women worldwide to take control of their health and their hormones through her website and social medical channels. She is the best-selling author of Beyond the Pill and Healing Your Body Naturally After Childbirth and now is releasing another book called Is This Normal?: Judgment-Free Straight Talk about Your Body. As an international speaker, clinical educator, and medical advisor within the tech community, she's considered a leading authority on women’s health. She is a member of the MindBodyGreen Collective and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Dr. Brighten serves as a faculty member for the American Academy of Anti Aging Medicine.

How do you feel if you have ever had issues down below? Did it ever bring you shame? Let me know in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • Why it's so important to talk to your doctor about rashes "down there" and what type of doctor you should talk to
  • Signs from your body that something's off
  • Hormonal imbalances -- why usually more than one hormone is off
  • How poor sleep impacts SO many hormones
  • Thoughts on melatonin supplementation -- worth trying or avoid at all costs?
Quotes

"Even the imagery they use, it's just this really horrible imagery until we have some kind of medical intervention to come in and save us from being women. And all of that's wrong. It's all wrong!" [10:14]

"Yeast infections could also be a sign. If you're having repeat yeast infections, it can be a sign of insulin dysregulation, blood sugar imbalance; and it may be the first way that diabetes is showing up for you." [16:35]

285: Got Dry, Irritated, Red Eyes? Sneaky Triggers You Wouldn't Think Of w/ Dr. Carly Rose16 Mar 202300:32:15

Many of you now by now that my dad was an ophthalmologist, so I guess there's a certain place in my heart for eye issues. However, when we talk about skin on the show, we might not think about the connection to our eyes, but a lot of people struggle with eye issues, especially since some medications that are taken to help skin conditions sometimes exacerbate eye issues.

Today's guest is an optometrist, Dr. Carly Rose who is an optometrist who received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Northern Kentucky University before heading off to optometry school in Chicago. She then chose to complete a year-long residency at the Cincinnati VAMC Eye Clinic.

Dr. Rose owns a comprehensive primary eye care practice called Eyecare on the Square and a dry eye medspa, Clear Eyes + Aesthetics in Cincinnati OH.  She is a current member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association, and the American Academy of Optometry.

Have you ever dealt with dry eye or eye-related side effects from medications? Let me know in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What is dry eye + what are the symptoms?
  • What can cause an ocular surface condition?
  • How screens + breathing can mess up tear production
  • What you need to know about Demodex mites + eyes… yikes!
  • Possible medications that can dry out your eyes
  • Tips for dry eyes- at home or in a professional's office!
Quotes

“Tears are a lot more than just water. They're very, very complex. And it's really cool because it's also kind of like breast milk in that it, it changes percentage of components depending on what's going on in the environment. So they're reactive.” [2:52]

“There are more dry eye patients than all macular degeneration and glaucoma patients combined. And that number is growing exponentially.” [03:57]

284: How to Find a Knowledgeable Integrative Practitioner For Skin Rash Problems09 Mar 202300:14:23

If working with an alternative medicine or integrative practitioner on your skin problems has been on your wish list, you must listen to this!

Hopefully you’ll find this episode before you commit to working with anyone because the process of finding an integrative or alternative “skin rash-literate” practitioner isn’t as simple as it may seem.

That’s because addressing chronic skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dandruff, chronic hives, dermatographia and even topical steroid withdrawal is a specialty.

But functional trainings often lump them all in with gut + autoimmune problems – often treating them as if they were solely a gut problem.

HINT HINT – they’re not JUST a gut problem.

So let’s talk about why you can’t just look for any integrative or functional provider AND what you can do to vet those whom you’re considering working with!

In this episode:
  • Why you can’t just look for a functional or integrative practitioner and assume they are “skin problem” literate
  • Being integrative is a spectrum
  • Problems with functional medicine for chronic skin issues
  • Suggestions on finding a knowledgeable practitioner
Quotes:

If you have a history of disordered eating or eating disorders, ask if they would still use elimination diets in your case.

Because functional medicine does not teach anything about topical steroid withdrawal, your practitioner will likely assume you have severe eczema.

283: Is Your Rash Actually Shingles? w/ Dr. Mamina Turegano02 Mar 202300:32:53

If you've ever joined a Facebook group and uploaded a picture of a crazy, bumpy rash and someone told you to just put a cream on it, there's no shame here. However, some people may actually have shingles, and you can't just "put a cream on it"! In honor of National Shingles Awareness Month and Week, I wanted to bring in an amazing expert on the topic to dish out the facts and what to watch out for.

My guest today is Mamina Turegano, MD,. She's a triple board-certified dermatologist, internist, and dermatopathologist practicing at Sanova Dermatology in the greater New Orleans area specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Turegano has a special interest in evaluating how nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, and other environmental factors can play a significant role in inflammation, aging, and cancer. She is a recent graduate of the Integrative Dermatology Certificate Program. In addition to providing skincare tips and knowledge on dermatological conditions through her social media platforms, she shares her Japanese mom’s anti-aging tips, which incorporate holistic and traditional Japanese beauty practices.

Have you ever had shingles? How did you find out, and what did you do for it? Share with the community in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What are shingles + how is it different from chickenpox?
  • Is shingles just an "old person's" health issue?
  • Signs + symptoms of a shingles outbreak
  • Possible triggers for shingles
  • Treatment options for shingles
  • Are shingles contagious + who should be cautious around someone with shingles?
  • Can you get shingles multiple times?
Quotes

"Stress... I would say that's probably the number one trigger is stress." [6:35]

"Eczema herpeticum is actually related to herpes simplex. So different variant, but it can look similar if eczema herpeticum is localized to one area." [21:52]

282: Metabolic Dysfunction Disaster Fueling Skin Problems w/ Dr. Robert Lustig23 Feb 202300:48:30

You go to the doctor, get blood panels run, but you're told you're fine. However, you don't feel well. Have you ever felt that maybe there's a step missing somewhere or something is just being overlooked?? Today you'll hear from someone who might be able to give you some insight on why things have shifted in the medical system and what you can do to support health, especially your mitochondrial health.

My guest today is Dr. Robert Lustig, MD, MSL. He is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and Member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He is one of the leaders of the current “anti-sugar” movement that is changing the food industry. Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He also received his Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) degree at University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2013.

I'd love to hear if something really stuck out to you in this interview! Share with me in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What is metabolic health + what all does it affect?
  • Insight on the liver enzyme ALT + how it's normal range has changed
  • What are Dr. Lustig's "Hateful Eight" for metabolic health?
  • Thoughts about why the diabetes diagnosis is exploding
  • Glucose vs. fructose - which is worse?
  • The importance of fiber
Quotes

"It makes sense that the disease of alcohol and the disease of sugar should be the same, and that's why children now get type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease without alcohol." [5:01]

"It turns out there are a whole lot of mitochondrial toxins out in our environment. But the mitochondrial toxin that you have the most control over, that you could deal with yourself in a flash and get rid of about 85% of the mitochondrial dysfunction in your body in one fell swoop, is the molecule fructose, which is one half of sugar." 281: Why Protein Intake Is So Important For Skin Health w/ Dr. Gabrielle Lyon16 Feb 202300:37:43

If you're a longtime listener, you know that I HATE crazy food dogmas. I will say it OVER and OVER again! So, with this conversation, one of the important pieces that I want people to walk away from today is that this is not black and white- are certain foods good or bad for you, should you only eat Organic, you need to eat only after a certain time of day, etc. Food restrictions or diets are not a one size fits all.

Today's guest, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, is a Washington University fellowship-trained physician in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics and is board certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Lyon is the founder of the Institute for Muscle Centric-Medicine™. She services the leaders, innovators, mavericks, and executives in their prospective fields. In addition, Gabrielle works closely with the Special Operations Military and has a private practice that services patients worldwide.

If you've increased your protein intake and it helped your skin health, what are your favorite ways to do so? Share with me in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • Why the argument against protein tends to be incorrect
  • The importance of muscle in terms of longevity
  • How does muscle act as a metabolic regulator?
  • If you're dealing with a compromised skin barrier, what types of intake numbers might you consider?
  • The BIG animal vs. plant question
  • What happens inside the body when you exercise and why it's CRUCIAL for health
  • Dr. Lyon's big announcement on the working title of her new book!
Quotes

"Everyone talks about insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's. Much of these metabolic diseases begin in skeletal muscle first." [5:32]

"For protein turnover, your body goes through about 250 grams, depending on your size, of protein turnover a day. That's a lot of protein turnover!" [6:32]

280: Low Stomach Acid + Chronic Skin Rash Issues09 Feb 202300:16:13

If you’ve heard that skin rashes are caused by underlying gut problems, this can definitely be a factor – especially looking at gut function + your gut microbiome.

That said, gut issues are just one factor in a case, so skin problems aren’t entirely gut problems!

While I’ve discussed other gut problems that are associated with chronic skin issues, I haven’t yet dove into the link between low stomach acid + chronic skin problems.

So let’s do that today so you can see why this often misunderstood issue (that’s pretty easy to figure out) is a great starting point to work on your case!

In this episode:
  • Overview of gut function + why any problems along the way create larger issues downstream
  • Reasons why stomach acid could be low
  • Symptoms of low stomach acid
  • How to test for low stomach acid (at-home)
  • Tips to naturally increase stomach acid
Quotes:

When stomach acid is chronically low, you can potentially end up with nutrient deficiencies + unwanted organisms in your GI tract that were swallowed.

There are no backup systems in your gut so if one step fails, it triggers problems from that point onward in the digestive + absorption process.

279: Chemical That Triggers Eczema (Oh My!) w/ Dr. Ian Myles02 Feb 202300:43:57

You could be doing all the right things- eating clean, whole foods, tossing out all itchy clothing, and making sure you drink plenty of water. But you're still flaring. Today's guest speaks on possible external triggers that he's been researching that may be causing flares, and it can be everything from where you live to what specific chemicals are in your environment.

My guest today is Dr. Ian Myles, who was born and raised in Colorado. He did his undergrad at Colorado State University, received his M.D. from the University of Colorado, then trained in internal medicine at The Ohio State University prior to beginning fellowship training in allergy and clinical immunology at NIH. He became a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and has supported several US and international missions. Dr. Myles received his MPH from George Washington University before becoming the head of the Epithelial Therapeutics Unit to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a topical, live bacterial treatment for eczema.

Have you changed anything in your environment or home and saw improvements in your rashes? Share with me in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • How the gut microbes prime the immune system to function properly and can affect cellular response in the skin
  • Why you shouldn't be ONLY concerned with killing staph on your skin
  • Why it's not in your head- allergic diseases HAVE increased since about the 1970s
  • Aside from diet, what are some possible external triggers for eczema? (Hello clothing, sheets, and air quality!)
  • Which chemicals seem to show up in the zip codes that have more eczema than you would anticipate?
  • How do these chemicals physiologically harm the bacteria AND create signals for the body to create rashes (WOW!)
  • Why eczema is not a drug deficiency and you need to look at the broader picture in your home and all of society
Quotes

"There's only seven chemicals you can use to give a mouse eczema so that you can then treat it, two of them are diisocyanates." [18:25]

"In terms of the fabrics, I think laying that chemical up against your skin, or particularly polyester bedsheets I would worry about for children, if they're laying on that, that chemical is touching the skin, it's going to disrupt the bacteria's ability to do its job and it's going to directly activate the defects in the skin, or the receptors in the skin." [23:54]

278: How Stress Causes Mineral Deficiencies w/ Christa Biegler, RD26 Jan 202300:42:00

Stress is a VERY hot topic right now, and I'm actually thankful it is because in the past, I think many brushed it off and just didn't talk it about it. However with new research, we know that it's not just a stressful "event" such as a divorce or a family member's terminal diagnosis that can have negative effects on mind and body. It can be chronic things such as consistent fasting, reliving childhood trauma, or as my guest today acknowledges, fast talking! It truly is unique for each person.

Today's guest, Christa Biegler, is an award-winning dietitian nutritionist, host of the Less Stressed Life podcast, and author of The Eczema Relief Diet & Cookbook. She helps health-savvy women overcome food sensitivities and fatigue without restrictive dieting to beat bloat, burnout & eczema breakouts. She lives with her unicycling husband & kids in the Midwest.

What are some things you've seen stress affect in or on your body? Let me know in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What is unrealized stress?
  • Cortisol's impact on other hormones when you're stressed
  • Being honest about YOUR stress (not compared to others)
  • What's an "energy vampire"?
  • Role minerals play in your body when you're stressed
  • Testing options to check your mineral status
  • The most valuable ratios of a hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA)
Quotes

“There's a sodium-potassium pump in every single cell. So if you have low sodium-potassium like I did on my mineral results, then you're not only struggling to get nutrients in and out of every cell, but it's a backbone to making stomach acid." [14:09]

"With more severe skin cases, I have seen more severe toxic burden being lost in the tissue. So that's looking at arsenic, cadmium, aluminum, etc..." [27:51]

277: Rethinking Thyroid Problems (And What They Mean) w/ Dr. Eric Balcavage19 Jan 202300:38:48

As anyone who has worked with me in my clinical practice may know, I feel very strongly about monitoring thyroid function and trying to optimize it. Plus, I get questions ALL the time surrounding it. Because of that, I am so excited to have an expert on the thyroid, Dr. Eric Balcavage, on this episode to talk about this important topic.

Dr. Eric Balcavage is a functional medicine practitioner, chiropractor, host of the Thyroid Answers Podcast, and the co-author of the book, The Thyroid Debacle. The book co-written by Kelly Halderman MD, addresses the problems with current allopathic and functional medicine approaches to hypothyroidism as well as the solutions to restoring thyroid physiology.

Dr. Balcavage is also the owner and founder of Rejuvagen, a functional medicine clinic in Chadds Ford, PA. As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and being Board Certified in Integrative Medicine, he is a nationally recognized speaker and educator on various health related topics including thyroid physiology, bile physiology, detoxification, oxidative stress, methylation and chronic illness. He has made it his mission to change the way medicine looks at hypothyroidism.

If you're suffering with a skin condition, have you checked into thyroid function? Were you surprised by it? Let me know in the comments below!

In this episode:
  • What does it mean for your thyroid to not be working the way that it should?
  • What can cause a cell to perceive danger and affect its function?
  • The difference between the body having dysfunction vs. creating an adaptive response
  • Dr. Balcavage's opinion on having Hashimoto's- is it different than having any other thyroid problems?
  • The elephant in the room- why should you even care about your thyroid if you're having skin issues??
  • FREE things to do to reduce stress responses in your body which affect the thyroid and skin health
  • Finally...Which diet is best? (It's probably not what you think!)
Quotes

“If we have a population that's about 50% overweight or obese and if about 50% of the population has some type of blood sugar regulation issues going on, then the number of people that struggle with problems with thyroid signal physiology and tissue or cellular hypothyroidism is probably closer to 50 or 60%." [05:17]

"What's the biggest organ to dump stuff out if you have a bad gut, bad liver, and bad gallbladder? Skin is one of the best places to dump it out. If you have an immune inflammatory issue, you're producing a bunch of inflammatory chemicals that are going to have an impact on the skin." [18:36]

393: TRUE or FALSE: Is Milk Bad For You? w/ Dr. Bill Schindler31 Jul 202500:45:05

Dairy is often labeled as inflammatory and unhealthy—but is that really true? With rising dairy intolerance and the popularity of plant-based alternatives, it’s easy to wonder if milk still belongs in our diets.

Traditional dairy like yogurt, kefir, and cheese have nourished cultures for thousands of years, yet modern processing may play a role in today’s issues.

Joining me is Dr. Bill Schindler, archaeologist, primitive technologist, and chef, who studies ancestral diets and runs the Modern Stone Age Kitchen. Together, we unpack whether dairy is truly “bad” for you, why dairy intolerance is on the rise, and what you can do to better tolerate dairy.

276: Dupixent Eye Side Effects: What's Going On? {RESEARCH} w/ Dr. Roselie Achten12 Jan 202300:28:09

Today, it's all about the eyes, which are somewhat the extension of our brain, so treating ANY condition with them can be scary. I've gotten a lot of questions from listeners about dupilumab (Dupixent) and the side effects specifically when it comes to the eyes. So to dive in on this topic, I brought in today's guest, Dr. Roselie Achten, since her PhD focuses on ocular surface disease in atopic dermatitis patients before and during dupilumab treatment.

Dr. Roselie Achten is a medical doctor and PhD student at the Department of Dermatology at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands, and I am so excited to have her on the show! You can find some of her research findings in the links section below.

Have you ever experienced any side effects with your eyes after starting dupilumab? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Stats on how many patients develop Dupixent eye side effects (aka. dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease)
  • Eye symptoms of patients commonly complain about
  • How long does it typically take to develop eye problems from Dupixent?
  • What puts you more at risk for developing Dupixent eye side effects?
  • What are your options if you develop Dupixent eye side effects?
  • Can reducing the use of Dupixent help?
Quotes

“We were also quite surprised by the fact that the majority of the patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis already had characteristics of the ocular surface disease. So of the 70 patients that were analyzed, 90% of them already had characteristics of ocular surface disease before the start of Dupilumab treatment." [11:09]

"If patients have these signs and symptoms of dupilumab associated ocular surface disease, we first start with tacrolimus skin ointment for the external eyelids. We also start with ketotifen, which is an antihistamine eye drop... also the artificial tears, it's more for if you experience a dry eye sensation, it could lead to improvement of that symptom for a little time." [17:12]

275: Why You're So Itchy (HINT: It's Probably Not Histamine) w/ Dr. Shawn Kwatra05 Jan 202300:37:15

There are SO many causes to itch. Each person's skin condition is truly unique. My guest today, Dr. Shawn Kwatra, is deep in the trenches with research varying from what causes itchiness to the gut microbiome could be a major causes for things like eczema and psoriasis.

Shawn Kwatra, MD is a Director of the Johns Hopkins Itch Center and an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, USA. He specializes in medical dermatology areas of clinical expertise include atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, chronic itch of unknown origin and dermatology for ethnic skin. Dr. Kwatra also runs a basic science laboratory and clinical trials unit and is funded by the National Institutes of Health and multiple foundations. Dr. Kwatra has been an author or co-author on over 200 publications and author of the book Living with Itch.

Have you tried any outside-the-box therapies to stop your itchiness? Let me know in the comments what worked for you!

In this episode:
  • Breaking down the itch cycle in your body
  • Tips to STOP the itch + disrupt the itch signal
  • Why histamine is NOT always the cause of itchiness or eczema
  • Sedating vs. non-sedating antihistamines (pros + cons)
  • How your vagus nerve connects gut problems to itch (FASCINATING)
  • Latest research on IL-31 (the "master conductor of itch")
  • What happens when you don't get relief from itchiness (especially long-term)
  • Why you can't "just stop scratching"
Quotes

“There was a study showing that even vagal nerve stimulation can actually alter itch sensation, and one of the new frontiers in inflammatory skin diseases is looking at alterations in the gut microbiome as well... I believe some of these bacterial specials, viral species, fungal species, may be signaling through the vagus nerve to help propagate itch sensation." [16:27]

"The studies that have been done today across many different indications have shown that IL-31 (cytokine) blockade is one of the most potent, if not the most potent anti itch medicines and inhibitory factors that exist. And so monoclonal antibodies targeting this agent are in deep late phase development." [19:38] Links

"How I deal with my eczema is the same way of how I deal with my partner, how I deal with my friends, how I deal with my family. And I think that's the big switch that many people may or may not realize is how you treat your eczema could be a correspondence to how you treat other people and more importantly how you treat yourself." [10:36]

"There are a lot of people who are walking around with clear skin who are not happy, which goes back to show that clear skin does not equate to happiness. So what does make us happy outside of clear skin?" [15:34]

Have you ever heard of cold laser therapy (or the CAP laser) and how it can help with skin issues? Contrary to what most people think, it’s actually not a laser! It is called Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP), and it is a type of ionized gas. My guest today delves into how it can help!

Today's guest is Jing Rui Yeo, long-term TSW (topical steroid withdrawal) warrior and co-owner of Skin Solace Aesthetic Clinic. Through her advocacy for TSW, she helped to bring CAP treatments to the UK. 270: Low Histamine Diet: Is It Good Or Bad For Skin Rashes?17 Nov 202200:13:31

If you’ve been seeing more online about doing a low histamine diet to help your skin rash problems, you’re not alone.

I’m also seeing this happen on the clinical side of things – clients previously been advised by practitioners to reduce high histamine foods because of itchiness in the hopes that their rashes would improve.

This might explain why I frequently get messages + emails asking me if a low histamine diet would be a helpful next best step.

Rather than writing out a lengthy response to each person (because a one word response is no where near sufficient), I figured it was time to share my thoughts.

My answer often surprises people because it’s not what they’d expect.

So that’s what I’m digging into today with the hope that the nuance will help you make a more informed choice for yourself about whether a low histamine diet is worth a try (or not).

In this episode:
  • Helpful criteria to figure out if doing a low histamine diet would be worthwhile
  • Biggest problems with a low histamine diet (no one tells you ahead of time)
  • List of chronic skin issues that might improve
  • How strict do you need to be on the diet to get results?
  • Should you stay on a low histamine diet for life?
Quotes:

Certain types of rashes will likely improve moreso with a low histamine diet such as chronic hives, urticaria, dermatographia, angioedema, and histamine-driven eczema.

As a rule of thumb, more food restrictions in general do not necessarily equate to being healthy.

“That's one of the benefits of (skin prick) testing is you get quick results, usually before you even walk out the door. So that test is very good for nasal allergies, food allergies, anaphylactic type reactions." [05:31]

“When we compare prick testing and the lab testing, the sensitivity is about 75% with the blood test compared to the prick test. So if we can do the prick test, we prefer to go that route. But we can't always do the prick test. You have to be off certain medications in order to do the prick testing reliably." [09:12]

268: Plant-based Vs Carnivore Diet: What’s Best For Chronic Skin Issues?03 Nov 202200:15:02

Have you read online that going plant-based or carnivore will totally heal your skin?

I’m sure you’ve probably come across this type of information on social media or in chat forums where people swear that what worked for their skin is the magic answer for everyone.

To be honest, I have intentionally steered clear of this topic for a long time now because I wasn’t sure how to cover it. I’ve certainly been pitched by staunch proponents of each diet to share their opinion here on the Healthy Skin Show about why their diet approach is best.

But my concern is that these conversations can be incredibly one-sided and, even at times, emotionally manipulative.

Diet is so deeply intertwined with what makes you who you are physically, emotionally and mentally.

So I wanted to find a way to share my clinical thoughts on both of these very popular diet trends without the dogma. AND while also being clear about my personal diet bias (based on my current clinical experience and how I personally eat).

My hope is that the insights shared here will help you make a more informed decision that truly is best for you, rather than an emotional choice that doesn’t center you in the equation.

In this episode:
  • Plant-based vs Carnivore diet – which is better in my opinion?
  • My clinical diet bias (so you can keep this in mind)
  • Pros + cons of a plant-based diet
  • Why plant-based diets may improve your rashes
  • Pros + cons of a carnivore diet
  • Why going carnivore could improve your rashes
  • My thoughts on diet dogma (especially as a nutrition professional)
Quotes:

I believe that each person bears the responsibility of figuring out the best way to support their body from a dietary standpoint.

No one should be bullied or shamed for their dietary preferences or choices.

267: Can Certain Foods Make Eczema Worse?27 Oct 202200:15:19

If you’ve thought that there is an official eczema trigger foods list you should follow…

Think again.

These lists are often made up of arbitrary foods that may or may not be a problem for you.

Often these lists scare people into avoiding foods unnecessarily which can have unintended consequences for your physical and mental health (as well as your relationship with food).

Instead of seeking out a list of foods to avoid when you have eczema, it’s wiser to question why you are reacting to certain foods in your diet.

If there’s a legitimate IgE food allergy – that’s one thing (and it’s best to follow your doctor’s recommendation on that front).

But assuming you now have a food sensitivity or food intolerance may mean you miss crucial clues to hidden problems lurking below the surface.

Here’s my take based on my work as a clinical nutritionist on why certain foods can make your eczema worse!

In this episode:
  • Eczema trigger foods list: Does one exist?
  • Thoughts on different naturally occurring food chemicals + eczema flares
  • Breakdown on what gut function is + how it can contribute to eczema
  • Why you might be reacting to certain foods (that has nothing to do with the food itself)
  • Debunking the notion that eczema is all about food sensitivities
Quotes:

There is no official list of eczema trigger foods no matter what you research online.

When there are gut function issues, the way food will interact with your gut will likely be problematic.

392: Improving Hidradenitis Suppurativa HS Treatment With GLP1 Weight Loss Meds (NEW RESEARCH) w/ Dr. Steven Daveluy24 Jul 202500:38:46

Best known for weight loss and blood sugar control, GLP-1 drugs might also reduce the stubborn inflammation behind hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Early research shows they may impact key inflammatory pathways—and even improve HS symptoms (including painful skin boils) without major weight loss.

But big questions remain: How do they interact with current HS treatments? Who can prescribe them? What happens if you stop?

Dermatologist and HS expert Dr. Steven Daveluy returns to unpack the science, share insights, and explore what this could mean for the future of HS care. Don’t miss it!

266: Eczema-Gut Connection (PART 1)20 Oct 202200:14:53

If you haven’t considered the potential gut connection to eczema, then this will be quite surprising to you!

Many of my atopic dermatitis clients struggle with chronic gut issues.

And some have extremely imbalanced gut microbiomes, but don’t even have any gut symptoms!

Testing and certain patterns that I see in my clinical practice have underscored the importance of considering the impacts that the gut has on the skin, so we’re going to start diving into that today!

In this episode:
  • Factors that impact the eczema-gut connection
  • When gut microbiome imbalances can start (HINT: it’s earlier than you think!)
  • Specific types of bacterial overgrowth I see in eczema clients
  • Imbalances that current research is highlighting in the “eczema gut”
  • What tends to be skewed in the gut microbiome of young babies + kids
Quotes:

Inflammation that impacts the skin often doesn’t originate in the skin… but actually somewhere else in your body.

The gut of someone with eczema may look different compared to someone who does not have eczema.

265: Problem with Antihistamines That No One Tells You w/ Dr. Chris Thompson, MD13 Oct 202200:33:35

Itchy eyes. Sinus pressure. Coughing and sneezing... Many people take antihistamines to get through an allergy episode, and that can be totally OK. But what about if you have to take them everyday? Are there potential long term side effects?

Today's guest, Dr. Chris Thompson, is a Board Certified Otolaryngologist, Head & Neck Surgeon with over 25 years of experience practicing medicine in Texas. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A & M University in College Station and went on to receive his Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Thompson completed his residency with the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.Dr. Thompson focuses solely on allergy, sinus and nasal treatment and is considered an expert in all three fields. He is one of a handful of doctors that played an integral role in the development of the cutting-edge sinus procedure, Balloon Sinuplasty. Dr. Thompson is also experienced with nasal reconstructive procedures and rhinoplasty. He is very excited for the future of allergy treatment through sublingual immunotherapy, as more patients choose and stay consistent with the treatment.

He is also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Texas Medical Association, and Travis County Medical Society.

Join us as Dr. Thompson discusses all things relating to allergies, the side effects of long-term use of antihistamines, and other options that people can use or try to get off of those meds such as immunotherapy.

Have you used antihistamines to calm down a severe allergic response? Have they helped, but you're ready to try something new? Let me know in the comments if you have questions!

In this episode:
  • Are antihistamines appropriate for daily use?
  • Different types of antihistamines (what do they do?)
  • How eczema, food allergies + asthma are related
  • Antihistamines crossing the blood-brain barrier (YIKES)
  • Non-pharmaceutical options to consider (and discuss with your doctor)
  • Treatment options for different types of specific allergies
Quotes

“There are some studies that link long-term antihistamine use with things like dementia. There was one I read recently that showed an increase in glial tumors, which are typically brain tumors... There are links to depression. There are links to weight gain with these and all, but one of the antihistamines over-the-counter can cross the blood-brain barrier." [4:16]

“One of the most surprising facts about allergy is that only 2% of the population of allergy patients seek allergy care. Imagine, if 3% of cancer patients or 2% of sleep apnea patients sought and received proper care for their medical ailment? It would just be unfathomable, but yet in the allergy world, again, we're not talking about a life threatening problem in most cases, but it really does get sidelined and poo-pooed by a lot of doctors." [25:20]

264: How to Balance Your Skin's Microbiome with Endolysins (MIND BLOWING!)06 Oct 202200:31:10

Have you ever heard of endolysins? Are you wondering what these things are and how are they relevant when talking about skin conditions? Today’s episode is sponsored by Gladskin which makes a topical cream that I think you should know about called Eczema Cream with Micreobalance®… and it’s highly relevant to what we’re talking about today. I became aware of Gladskin several years ago when community members started to share their personal stories of how Gladskin’s Eczema Cream had helped their eczema flares + symptoms.Because I didn’t fully understand how exactly the product worked, I read up on the Micreobalance® endolysin technology and talked to people at Gladskin so that I better understood why it could be helpful while being free of antibiotics and steroids.

I was really impressed with how neat endolysins are – sort of like pac-mans (for those of you who are old enough to remember that video game) that target the bad and preserve the good, to keep your skin microbiome in check. You can check out more about Gladskin Eczema Cream with Micreobalance® AND save 15% off your order at www.gladskin.com/healthyskinshow.

My guest today is Dr. Peter Lio, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture.

Dr. Lio will be giving you the low down on endolysins – I know you’re going to find this just as fascinating as I do, so let’s dive in!

Have you ever tried Gladskin, and has it helped on your skin journey? Post something you learned it in the comments!

In this episode:
  • The difference between the skin microbiome of eczema vs healthy skin
  • Thoughts on antibiotic resistance as a growing medical concern
  • Endolysins: what are they + how they support the skin microbiome
  • How Gladskin's Micreobalance® utilizes endolysins to help the skin's microbiome
  • Real-life stories from Dr. Lio's practice of patients using Gladskin
  • Tips + strategies to help you use Gladskin with Micreobalance®
Quotes

“There is some very convincing evidence that it may help with not only the bacterial balance on the skin, but also with atopic dermatitis. So we can actually see some of the studies are studied in patients with eczema or atopic dermatitis. I think there is pretty convincing evidence of clinical helpfulness of these [endolysin] products.” [10:47]

“... the baby's branded one. Actually, they remove the oat because there is some discussion around putting foods on our skin and the connection between allergy. Some people really do have an oat allergy. So [The Eczema Cream for Babies and Kids] is an even simpler, kind of an even cleaner preparation for the babies, which I love." [14:44]

"I'm really excited about Gladskin's work in this space. I think they're being bold. They're trying something totally new and entering in as really the only one of its kind right now. So it's kind of exciting to have a totally new class. When patients say, 'What is this like?' It's like, 'Nothing. It's really a totally new thing!' This is something really new and exciting."
