QUESTIONS I ASK DR. WADA IN THE EPISODE:
I'm excited to chat with you about a couple of topics in particular: functional medicine doctors and food sensitivity tests. Let's start with the field of functional medicine. First of all, what are functional medicine doctors, and why are they so appealing to people (vs. more traditional doctors)?
Do all functional medicine doctors have the same training as MDs?
What's wrong with functional medicine? (Is the training standardized? Is it covered by insurance? Do doctors over-prescribe supplements and lab tests? Is the training standardized? Is it really just a marketing tactic?)
Now, on to the topic of food sensitivity tests. There are soooo many popping up! What are the most popular ones people have probably heard of? How do they "work"?
Do they give you accurate data, or are they just a waste of money?
Are food allergies/sensitivities a real problem for most people, or have they been hyped up by fear mongering?

| Are You “Sober Curious”? Tips For Cutting Back On Alcohol | Michelle Kapler | 25 Apr 2022 | 00:48:51 | |
EPISODE 131 - Michelle Kapler is a Certified Life Coach specializing in overdrinking and alcohol freedom. She works with individuals who identify as women who want to change their relationship with their alcohol consumption. Michelle is on a mission to create a modern conversation around drinking, alcohol culture (especially in motherhood), and how we think about using alcohol as a way to cope with stress. As a former heavy drinker, a highly successful entrepreneur, and a mother, Michelle understands what it's like to have a big, full, wonderful life on the outside... but to truly feel like you need that nightly glass (or bottle) of wine. To feel like sometimes you are drinking against your own will. To feel like you have lost control. To hear the full story of Michelle’s journey with over-drinking, head over to her podcast (The Alcohol Freedom Podcast) and check out episode two. When Michelle isn’t coaching her clients online, you can find her creating healthfully indulgent meals, drinking herbal tea, digging in one of her family’s many veggie gardens, or hanging out with her husband, two kids, and a couple of chickens on their solar powered homestead in Ontario Canada. In the episode, Michelle shares how to know if you have a problematic relationship with alcohol, what to do if you feel weird not drinking in social situations, mindset shifts everyone must overcome when on a journey to drink less…and more!
EPISODE WEBPAGE: thehealthinvestment.com/132
P.S. – If you’re liking The Health Investment Podcast, be sure to hit “subscribe/follow” so that you never miss an episode 🙂
QUESTIONS I ASK MICHELLE IN THE EPISODE:
On your website, you write: "I'm a Certified Life Coach and I want to help you find freedom in your relationship with your drinking. I can help you question that nightly glass (or bottle) of wine that you need to make it through your life. I get it. I've been there. And I want to help you explore this without labels and without judgment." Can you tell us a bit about your background? (Specifically, what made you become a Certified Life Coach? And was your own relationship with drinking what inspired you to focus specifically on helping people with that? Can you tell us more about your own journey with alcohol?)
How much alcohol is "too much"?
How does someone know if they have a problematic relationship with alcohol?
"Sober curious" is a new term I've been hearing, but from what I understand it's mostly people who are choosing to enter a life of full-on sobriety (or are at least curious about it). Are most of the people who come to you "sober curious" or just wanting to cut back a bit?
I'm not a mom yet, but I've heard and read about alcohol as becoming something that's synonymous with motherhood. Is this new, or is it just spoken about more now? What advice do you have for moms, specifically, who find themselves relying on a drink (or several!) to make it through the day?
Since so many of our social lives revolve around food and alcohol, it could feel awkward to drink less—or not at all!—among friends. Sometimes you can even feel like a problem or a bother if you're not drinking! What tips do you have for navigating social situations?
Are there certain mindset shifts that are necessary to overcome when on a journey to drink less?

Do you have any other tangible exercises that are really useful for overcoming perfectionism and boosting self-confidence/love?

| COVID Vaccines For Kids, Omicron, Debunking Myths & More! | Dr. Paul Offit | 12 Jan 2022 | 00:42:40 | |
EPISODE 117 - Welcome to this special *BONUS* episode! Since the content of this ep is so timely, I wanted to release it stat!! Paul Offit, MD, is the Director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as well as the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology and a Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He has published more than 160 papers in medical and scientific journals in the areas of rotavirus-specific immune responses and vaccine safety, and he’s authored 10 books. Dr. Offit is also the co-inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, recommended for universal use in infants by the CDC in 2006 and by the WHO in 2013. In the episode, he shares why everyone who is eligible (kids included!) should get vaccinated ASAP, why the vaccine doesn’t impact fertility or alter your DNA, why “booster mania” may be stalling herd immunity...and more!
EPISODE WEBPAGE: thehealthinvestment.com/117
P.S. – If you’re liking The Health Investment Podcast, be sure to hit “subscribe/follow” so that you never miss an episode 🙂
QUESTIONS I ASK DR. OFFIT IN THE EPISODE:
Can you tell us a bit about your background? (Specifically, what led you to become a pediatrician and become particularly interested in vaccines and infectious diseases?)
I've seen and read some hesitation from parents to get their kids vaccinated against COVID because "most children have mild symptoms or no symptoms." Why is it important to vaccinate children, not just adults?
What risks are parents mostly worried about when it comes to vaccinating their kids? Are possible risks from the vaccine worse than risks from getting COVID?
What are the top myths that you're hearing from parents, particularly in regard to vaccinating their kids, and how are you addressing those?
What would you identify as the main reason people have doubts about vaccines in general?
How are risks (from contracting COVID and getting vaccinated) similar and different for adults as they are for kids?
Has there always been some level of controversy around vaccines?
Do you think the anti-vaccine movement is gaining momentum? Is social media making it worse?
What's your advice to parents who have kids that are still not yet eligible for a vaccine?
Do you think that the COVID vaccine should join the list of immunizations that are mandated by schools?
You've called the rush to get boosted "booster mania," and believe that it could be harmful to our overall efforts to reach unvaccinated kids and adults. Why is that?
Where has the White House’s messaging missed the mark?
Is there a magic number of vaccinations that we need to reach to finally move beyond this pandemic? If so, is that attainable in the coming months?

Instead, she empowers the parent to focus on what matters most to lead the whole family to lifelong healthy habits. In the episode, Wendy shares why it’s important to place less emphasis on an individual child's weight and more emphasis on creating a healthy whole family, the role of a parent when it comes to preparing and serving food, how parents can model healthy eating behaviors for their children...and more!

Why is it important to place less emphasis on an individual child's weight and more emphasis on creating a healthy whole family?
How can families teach their children about the importance of eating healthy?
How can a parent help their child reach a healthy weight when they have their own struggles with weight?
How can parents encourage healthy body images for children? What's the best way to encourage a healthy body weight while fostering a healthy self-image?

| How To “Eat Like The Animals” For Optimal Health | Stephen Simpson | 06 Sep 2021 | 00:49:51 | |
EPISODE 98 | Stephen Simpson is Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. After graduating as a biologist from the University of Queensland, Steve undertook his PhD at the University of London, then spent 22 years at Oxford before returning to Australia in 2005 as an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow, then ARC Laureate Fellow. Stephen developed an integrative modeling framework for nutrition, which was devised and tested using insects. This has since been applied to a wide range of organisms (from slime moulds to humans) and problems (from aquaculture and conservation biology to the dietary causes of human obesity and aging). He has also revolutionized understanding of swarming in locusts, with research spanning neurochemical events within the brains of individual locusts to continental-scale mass migration. Together with his colleague and friend David Raubenheimer, Stephen wrote Eat Like The Animals: What Nature Teaches Us About The Science Of Healthy Eating. In the episode, Stephen shares the single macronutrient every animal craves to satisfy above all else, the real reason why we overeat things like chips and ice cream, tips for reconnecting with our taste buds that can feel like they’ve been “hijacked”...and more! Enjoy!!
EPISODE WEBPAGE: thehealthinvestment.com/98
P.S. – If you’re liking The Health Investment Podcast, be sure to hit “subscribe/follow” so that you never miss an episode 🙂
QUESTIONS I ASK STEPHEN IN THE EPISODE:
Can you explain your education and background? How did you eventually team up with David Raubenheimer to write Eat Like The Animals?
What is a calorie? What are some common misconceptions about calories?
How do each of the macronutrients (fat, carbs, protein) serve us in different ways? How do micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) serve us?
You write, "All mammals, including ourselves, are lucky to start life in such ideal circumstances — because mother’s milk is as close as we’ll ever come to a perfectly balanced diet. It contains, in proper proportions, everything a newborn needs to grow. But after a mammal is weaned, nutrition becomes a much trickier undertaking." Why does it get so tricky? How do our brains get so confused?
What are our FIVE appetites?
Why do we end up overeating fat and carbs?
Are plant sources of protein as effective and efficient as animal sources?
Ultimately, what should we be eating most of the time? What should we be avoiding?

| We’ve Been SO Wrong About Exercise, Metabolism & Weight Loss! | Herman Pontzer, PhD | 23 Aug 2021 | 00:48:21 | |
EPISODE 96 | Herman Pontzer, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology and Research Associate Professor of Global Health at Duke University, investigates how our species’ evolutionary past shapes our lives today. His team conducted the first measurements of daily energy expenditure in traditional hunter-gatherers and in non-human apes, with findings that have challenged the way we think about diet, exercise, metabolism, and health. Dr. Pontzer’s new book, Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy, was published in March, 2021. In the episode, he shares why “eat less, exercise more” is flawed advice for fat loss, what we should be relying on BESIDES exercise for weight loss and maintenance, a new-and-improved tv show structure that’d work better than The Biggest Loser...and more! Enjoy!!
EPISODE WEBPAGE: thehealthinvestment.com/96
P.S. – If you’re liking The Health Investment Podcast, be sure to hit “subscribe/follow” so that you never miss an episode 🙂
QUESTIONS I ASK HERMAN IN THE EPISODE:
What’s your background? (Specifically, how did you become interested in studying human evolution? Energy expenditure?)
What does "energy expenditure" mean? How is it similar or different from metabolism?
How much does energy expenditure differ, human to human?
Is it possible to get a "higher" or "boosted" caloric expenditure?
Can you explain how our metabolism "adjusts," making it tougher to lose weight over time?
What do we have right about energy expenditure? About metabolism? What do we have wrong?
What do we have right about exercise? What do we have wrong?
I know you say exercise is more critical for weight maintenance than it is for weight loss. Can you explain that?
You include a section in your book about the issues with the tv show The Biggest Loser. If you could create a new-and-improved show about weight loss, what would it look like?
Do diets like keto and paleo work? (Or, do parts of them work?)
What's your recommended strategy for weight loss?
Aside from your takeaways on energy expenditure, what are some other lessons we can learn from hunter-gatherer communities like the Hadza?
