I’m really excited to announce a new project I’ve been working on. It’s a video podcast called The Guest List with Patrick Hicks. The first episodes drop next week. In each episode I am sitting down with a guest and together we are going to build a playlist of their life.

You will be able to get all of the full episodes here on Substack but you can also listen wherever you get your podcasts and you will be able to listen to the playlists from each guest after every episode! I’ll still be making my regular content but I think this new podcast is going to be really great. I hope you’ll join me for the start of this new adventure!

Today sportswriter Jeff Pearlman sits down with Patrick to build the playlist of his life.

Jeff started writing for Sports Illustrated in 1996 and has since written nine New York Times bestselling books, including The Bad Guys Won about the ‘86 Mets, Sweetness about Chicago Bears legend Walter Payton, and Showtime, the Lakers book that was turned into Winning Time on HBO.

He just wrote his first music book - a biography of Tupac Shakur called Only God Can Judge Me - which can be pre-ordered now, so it seemed like the perfect time to talk with him about some of his favorite songs.

If you’re not from Chicago you might not know about Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, but in this city he is a beloved icon. His videos about Chicago history started going viral on TikTok in 2021 and now he has his own tour company Chicago Mahogany Tours, a YouTube show You Don’t Know Chi, and his own merch that bears his popular slogan “Everything Dope About America Comes From Chicago".

Dilla had me over to his office in Auburn Gresham on Chicago’s South Side to do the first ever in person episode of The Guest List. We talked about the songs he grew up with, the songs that remind him of his wife, and the songs his kids have gotten him to listen to.
