Justin Trott is a name you may not be familiar with. But after this podcast episode you may well be asking, how did I not know?!
Justin grew up in a small regional township just outside Melbourne and was keen golfer. It was a very good round of golf and chance meeting with Ross Perrett as a kid that set a path for Justin's future to becoming a golf course architect. That chance meeting soon gave way to Justin doing work experience with Ross which then would see Justin's career begin at the same time as the boom of golf in Australia during the late 80's and early 90's working ultimately in the design house of the well known Thomson Wolveridge Perrett of the time.
Fast forward to today after being involved with numerous projects in many different capacities such as The National Golf Club, Moonah Links, Hamilton Island Golf Club, Cape Wickham, and most recently, The Cliffs Kangaroo Island, and Justin has now amassed a long, established, and fruitful career as a golf course architect, often without public recognition.
Join me on this incredible journey as Justin takes us through some of his biggest career moments, including a few stories about the late Peter Thomson, and a look into the future of golf course architecture in Australia as President of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects.
Richard Flesser is the superintendent of the Jack Nicklaus signature designed Lakelands Golf Club on the Gold Coast in Queensland. He might be leading the team maintaining this well known course right now, but his career began far from the highs of such a facility.
Growing up as a Gold Coast boy, Richard wasn't one of those kids who was always chasing golf. Whilst he began mowing lawns at an early age, his father was a butcher by trade, and Richard went about earning money trying his hand at a number of different jobs.
When he did get an opportunity to work on a golf course, it wasn't the glamourous well known tracks of the Gold Coast we hear about today, but it was a start nevertheless! From here he would go on to help build a number of the most well known golf courses of the Gold Coast through the boom years of golf in the 1990's before settling into a career greenkeeping groove at Royal Pines and then Lakelands Golf Club itself.
Join Richard and I as he takes us on a nostalgic trip through the years of golf on the Gold Coast and hearing about the rise in his career along with the rise of golf on the Gold Coast, learning and experiencing some of the highest level of maintenance and presentation of any golf course working under some of the country's best greenkeepers.
You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green!

The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of work at www.mcmahons.net.au
Paul Mogford came into golf course architecture from a landscape architecture background. It was after reading an article written by the late great Peter Thomson that, as Paul puts it, "lit a flame". And so began his pursuit to work in the golf course architecture industry.
This conversation with Paul explores some of Paul's work as an architect such as Metropolitan and Sanctuary Cove, and there's a brand new project soon to start. We also explore his partnership in business with Neil Crafter where they would ultimately become Crafter + Mogford, and I have an interesting question for Paul to close out our conversation, which is met with an equally interesting answer!
This conversation will keep you entertained and maybe even asking yourself some questions, particularly at the end, so get comfy, put your ears on and join us as we go deep!
Glenn Beauclerc is superintendent of Links Hope Island on the Gold Coast. Designed by Australian architecture firm Thomson Wolveridge Perrett opening in 1993, Hope Island is often considered one of the Gold Coast's best golf courses! Glenn shares with us his insight into what goes into making Hope Island such a great golf course, along with how he, his team, and the owner are working hard and planning for significant investment to the property in the near future.
Glenn also shares with us his greenkeeping career journey. A journey that includes working a a number of the Gold Coast's best courses and tournaments including the Ladies Masters at Royal Pines and the men's Australian Open at The Grand Golf Club. We also dive into his infatuation with 328 couch, the only turf type he worked with on greens throughout his extensive career and why he considers it the best. Oh and there's plenty of laughs along the way with a few flashbacks!
Load this one up and get ready for a deep dive where I haven't been before!
