Pennard, Glamorgan, Wales30 Oct 202600:30:41

You won’t find the sea lapping at the edge of this Welsh links course, because Pennard is 200 feet above the bay. That’s why it’s been dubbed “The Links in the Sky.”

Throw in a  ruined medieval castle and ancient church, plus electrified fences to deter livestock, and this is definitely one of the more unusual settings for 18 holes

And according to the rankings, it’s the second best golf course in Wales.

Royal Portrush (Valley), County Antrim, Northern Ireland23 Oct 202600:37:24

Royal Portrush's second course now ranks in the Great Britain and Ireland Top 100 in its own right, so it deserves its own episode of The Golf Pilgrim.  If you're after the Dunluce Championship course, keep scrolling down our long list of episodes; we featured it in 2024.

We're lucky to have two men with in-depth knowledge as our guides: Gary McNeill, Head Professional at Royal Portrush, and Ricky Elliot, who grew up playing both courses and is now the long-serving caddie for 5-time major winner Brooks Koepka.

Littlestone, Kent, England16 Oct 202600:28:56

Littlestone attracts a high standard of golfers - the average handicap of its membership is a good indicator.  But a few years ago it was graced by "the worst golfer ever to play in The Open"!

When filmmakers needed a course to shoot "The Phantom Of The Open" - the true story of hapless novice Maurice Flitcroft who somehow found himself among those trying to qualify for the Open Championship, they chose Littlestone.

It may not be as famous as some other Kent courses such as Royal St George's and Princes - which really have staged The Open, but like them, it's a true test of links golf.

Malone (Drumbridge & Ballydrain), County Antrim, Northern Ireland09 Oct 202600:30:08

Malone Golf Club sits in the midst of one of the most exclusive areas of Belfast, with 27 parkland holes around a huge lake.  The championship 18 is ranked as the best course in the city, and you sense that is true from the moment you enter via a Magnolia Lane-like entrance.

If you're staying in Belfast, or on a golf tour and fancy an alternative to Northern Ireland's famous links courses, you won't be disappointed.

Pyle & Kenfig, Glamorgan, Wales02 Oct 202600:34:51

A near neighbour of Royal Porthcawl, P&K, as it is affectionately known, earns plaudits in its own right and is ambitious in its plans for the future.

A round here is a game of two halves - the original course was designed by Harry Colt, but newly acquired land after the Second World War allowed Philip Mackenzie Ross to plot a route through dunes for a new back nine.

Belvoir Park, County Antrim, Northern Ireland25 Sep 202600:31:51

A parkland course in the suburbs of Belfast, Belvoir Park takes you on a roller-coaster ride through tree-lined valleys, on a routing that has changed little since Harry Colt designed it a century ago.  Peter Alliss called it the "Augusta of Northern Ireland."

Belvoir Park is so popular that the club has 1,200 members, and it hosts 50,000 rounds of golf every year.

Swinley Forest, Berkshire, England18 Sep 202600:43:47

For decades, Swinley Forest was in a world of its own: an ultra-private members' club in a secluded area on the Berkshire/Surrey border, with few outsiders able to enjoy a course rightly rated one of the best in the world.

And while some traditions remain -  you can pick and place your ball all year round, and your WHS index isn't recognised  - it now welcomes visitors.

Harry Colt designed it, and golf historians believe it was his favourite of all his many great courses.  If you play here, you will understand why.

Ardglass, County Down, Northern Ireland11 Sep 202600:49:46

"It's in the hole!!"

Yes, the moment every golfer dreams about… but was it Neil or was it Ian who celebrated a hole-in-one?

It was a perfect sunny day with barely a hint of a breeze, and Ardglass was looking at its most spectacular. Perched on cliff-tops with views of the Irish Sea from every hole, this course has become a favourite destination for golfers who also play at nearby Royal County Down.

Former US PGA winner Rich Beem is an honorary member of the club and tells us why Ardglass is so special.

Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland, England05 Sep 202600:35:57

For the first time in the history of The Golf Pilgrim, we think a Top 100 club is charging too little for visitors to play their course!  Dunstanburgh Castle has been offering a a special twilight deal where a round costs just £30….oh, and that also includes a pizza and beer afterwards!

The regular green fee is still incredibly good value for a links course with stunning views which has now leapt into England’s Top 100.

Galgorm Castle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland31 Aug 202600:32:20

Unlike so many of Ireland’s finest courses, Galgorm Castle is not a links, and it is miles from the sea. But you are never far from water.
14 of the 18 holes feature water hazards, with lakes and rivers cutting through the course.
Galgorm has staged many professional tournaments, with Ryan Fox and Aaron Rai among those who’ve challenged for titles here.

Woodhall Spa (Hotchkin), Lincolnshire, England25 Aug 202600:55:57

It’s the home of England Golf and has a fearsome reputation as one of the most difficult courses in the country.
Woodhall Spa’s Hotchkin course is rated as one of the best heathland courses anywhere, but is its bunkering too penal?

Course managers past and present discuss the challenge of maintaining its 143 sand traps.

Castlerock (Mussenden), County Londonderry, Northern Ireland19 Aug 202600:37:46

Castlerock is on prime links golf land on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast. Its close proximity to Portrush and Portstewart is both a blessing and a curse; the Mussenden course used to be seen as living in the shadow of its famous neighbours, but visitors to the area often add Castlerock to their itinerary and are delighted with what they find.

And if its 18 holes aren’t enough of a challenge, the 9 hole Bann course is rated as even trickier..

“We’ve had a spectacular week, beautiful weather. The people are amazing here, so welcoming and helpful.”

Those were the words of US Curtis Cup captain Sarah LeBrun Ingram after her team’s 2021 win.

Allisen Corpuz, who won three matches and went on to win the US Open a couple of years later, tells us why Conwy is one of her favourite courses.

Architect Mike Howard and GM Matthew Parsley reveal how the course will be even better.

K Club (Palmer North), County Kildare, Ireland07 Aug 202600:46:13

As we approach the 20th anniversary of the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club, it's a good time to revisit the course which has provided so many great memories.

The Arnold Palmer designed parkland course has hosted numerous professional events, so this is your opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Rory McIlroy who has twice won the Irish Open here in dramatic style.

Our special guest David Howell recalls his memories of the course as both a Ryder Cup player, and as a television commentator.

Bonus episode: Ryan Fox tells us how he won The Open!05 Aug 202600:36:30

Earier this year Ryan Fox joined us on The Golf Pilgrim to talk about some of his favourite courses in New Zealand.

In July, Ryan became the Champion Golfer of the Year, lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale!

Having reviewed the course a few weeks earlier, and presented The Golf Pilgrim guide on how to play Royal Birkdale, it seemed like a good idea to hear from the man who conquered the course.  So we're delighted to say - welcome back Ryan, as he describes how he did it…..

Castletown, Isle of Man01 Aug 202600:39:05

Castletown on the Isle of Man is rightly proud of its pedigree.

Old Tom Morris laid out the original links, Alister MacKenzie made improvements 20 years later, and Philip Mackenzie Ross updated it after the Second World War.

It has some of the most dramatic holes in the British Isles, and its incredible 18th hole was the climax of Neil's six-year quest to play GB & Ireland's top 100.

Seascale was announced as one of England’s top 100 in the 2026 list, and we discovered it was entirely deserving of its place.

"Bury me in a pot bunker", wrote the legendary designer Pete Dye, so his friends and family did just that at the side of the eighth of his masterpiece, Teeth of the Dog.

The Dominican Republic links, which sit on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, were restored while being closed for nearly a year.

Now they are back to their thrilling best and will surely return to the world's top 100 after a short hiatus.

Royal Belfast, County Down, Northern Ireland08 Jul 202600:34:12

The city of Belfast is in County Antrim, but Royal Belfast Golf Club is north-east of Northern Ireland's capital, in County Down.

It's celebrating the centenary of its Harry Colt-designed parkland course on the shore of Belfast Lough.  But the club is facing a very modern problem; a new housing development adjacent to the course means several holes will have to be reconfigured for health and safety reasons.

The club hopes the changes will make the course even better.  And its Victorian clubhouse is one of the grandest you will find anywhere.

County Louth GC (Baltray), Ireland02 Jul 202600:44:10

Shane Lowry helped bring Baltray, County Louth, to wider acclaim when he won the Irish Open here as an amateur. But connoisseurs of Irish courses have always known this was one of the country’s finest links.

It’s also the home course of the 2026 Amateur Champion Stuart Grehan, who tells us how it will help him prepare for playing in The Open, as well as the US Open and the Masters.

County Louth remains a members' club at heart, but they’re getting used to sharing tee times with visitors from around the world.

Wallasey, Cheshire, England26 Jun 202600:40:03

Wallasey has not just one, but two great claims to fame, and is a course that attracts plaudits from those who play it.

Bobby Jones, arguably the greatest amateur golfer in history, played in a qualifier at Wallasey and went on to win the Open Championship at Hoylake and complete the original Grand Slam.

And those of you who prefer playing in stableford competitions rather than a medal round will be forever grateful to Frank Stableford, the Wallasey member who invented the scoring system after a dreadful start to one round there…

Both men are honoured in the clubhouse and on the course.

Royal County Down, County Down, Northern Ireland02 Jun 202600:55:14

A special episode celebrating what many believe is the greatest golf course in the world!

Royal County Down regularly tops the list of the best courses outside America, and some rate it as high as Cypress Point and Pine Valley.

So why is it so revered?  The challenge of the design and the beauty of its surroundings make it a must-play destination.

We played alongside some of those who know the course best, and in this episode, you'll also hear from Soren Kjeldsen, who won the Irish Open at RCD in 2015.

St Mellion (Nicklaus), Cornwall, England27 May 202600:36:26

It's more than 30 years since St Mellion last hosted a top-level European Tour event, but that shouldn't reflect on the quality of a course which saw the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Jose Maria Olazabal triumph.

The top pros now play fewer events in England as the Tour embraces ever more international venues.  But the course that Jack Nicklaus built, because Seve had criticised the original St Mellion course as being too easy, presents a challenge for every golfer.

And for a championship course, the green fee is very competitive.

Old Head, County Cork, Ireland21 May 202600:44:11

You know what you're getting if you book a round at Old Head - but even the photographs of the spectacular setting don't do justice to the experience of playing golf on fairways perched precariously next to clifftops, with the waves crashing against rocks 300 feet below you.

What you won't know until you get there is how big a factor the wind will be - the weather forecast had suggested it was going to be a benign day for our round.  The reality was a little different!

It all makes for an unforgettable round of golf…

Waterville, County Kerry, Ireland15 May 202600:36:12

Here's a top tip to take note of even before you play the wonderful Waterville Links.  If you're driving a car from Killarney, take the scenic Ballyghisheen Pass through some of the most spectacular scenery in Ireland; coaches transporting tourists and golf groups have to use the main N70 around the coast.

And the breathtaking views continue as you reach Waterville.  Framed by the Atlantic Ocean and Ireland's most impressive mountain range, Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Waterville Golf Club has 360 degrees of scenery on every hole.

Payne Stewart fell in love with the course, but his premature death soon after winning the US Open prevented him from taking up the role of Honorary Captain. A statue of him greets those about to follow in his footsteps.

Legend has it that an Irish monk, St Brendan, set sail from Tralee and landed in America centuries before Columbus.  Now thousands of Americans make the reverse journey on a pilgrimage to a golf course designed by Arnold Palmer.  Mind you, he credited God with doing half the work.

West Lancs, Lancashire, England03 May 202600:34:26

Formed in 1873, this is one of the oldest clubs in England, but it is as relevant to the history of golf as it was when it was founded.

Its close relationship with Royal Liverpool means that West Lancs will jointly stage the Amateur Championship with Hoylake in 2026.  And it will also continue to host the Final Open Qualifying for the top pros looking for a last-minute ticket to Royal Birkdale.

But even if you are neither a top amateur nor professional, you will be thrilled by the challenge and the condition of the West Lancashire course, which runs alongside the Mersey Estuary, and is one of the gems of North-West links golf.

Muirfield, East Lothian, Scotland27 Apr 202600:45:15

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers can lay claim to being the founders of modern golf, having established the first set of competition rules soon after being founded in 1744.

Muirfield has been their home since 1890, and the course has hosted the Open Championship sixteen times - but not since 2013.  The club changed its much-criticised rules and now admits women as members, but it still awaits the return of the Claret Jug to a course regarded as among the best in the world.

Paraparaumu Beach, Wellington, New Zealand10 Mar 202600:42:04

It's been called the spiritual home of New Zealand golf, having hosted many tournaments, and is still rated the country's second-best course.  It's also the only NZ course that Tiger Woods has played competitively - as a favour to his then Kiwi caddie Steve Williams.

Paraparaumu Beach recently welcomed back the tour pros for the New Zealand PGA Championship.  It's not a long course, so you might expect a flood of low scores.  But the wind blew, and only TWO players finished under par!

Cleeve Hill, Gloucestershire, England04 Mar 202600:42:03

Cleeve Hill has had a lot of publicity in recent years - largely because it almost went out of business until new owners took over - and it is now in England's Top 100.

But this is so different from a lot of courses in the rankings - not just in terms of its setting, high above Cheltenham, but because this is raw golf as it used to be.  The course might lack perfect paths and intensive maintenance, but it is a real adventure at a bargain price.

Titirangi is the Maori word for "fringe of heaven", and is quite a contrast to many of the modern courses which have been opened in New Zealand in recent years.

Dr Alister MacKenzie drew up his plans for the course a century ago, shortly after he'd designed Royal Melbourne and before he got to Augusta National.

And that legacy has been protected by recent renovation work.

But we make an exception when a course is so highly rated that anyone who aspires to play the World's Top 100 will try to find a way to get on.

Opened in 2015 and designed by Tom Doak, Tara Iti has such a stellar reputation that Rory McIlroy wanted to play a round here while on holiday. Course record holder Ryan Fox describes what their game was like…

The European/Brittas Bay Club, County Wicklow, Ireland02 Feb 202600:40:37

If you've ever played The European Club, or ever wanted to, then this is a must-listen episode! Because The European is dead - but in 2027 will be reborn as The Brittas Bay Club.

Raymond and Nicky Conlan bought the club from its founder, Pat Ruddy, and have hired Kyle Phillips (the man who gave us Kingsbarns), to do a complete redesign of the course. We have exclusive interviews with Nicky and Kyle, who explain why they felt a highly regarded course needed to be torn up and rebuilt.

We played the course just before it closed, and offer our thoughts on why change was needed.

New Zealand GC, Surrey, England22 Jan 202600:43:22

Join us as we step back in time, to a club where the lockers still bear the names of long-dead members, and where a competitive round of golf often takes second place to a good lunch.

The New Zealand Golf Club (listen to the podcast for an explanation of the name) sits on Surrey heathland near Woking, and its well-draining clay base means great conditions even in the depths of winter.

It feels private and exclusive, but visitors are welcome.  And if you have the stamina to play 36 holes or more in a day, you might consider a visit to be a bargain.

The Island, County Dublin, Ireland09 Jan 202600:42:05

Some golf days are just a bit more special than others, so this mid-winter visit to The Island, north of Dublin, will linger long in the memory.

A chilly, but sunny day; a very warm welcome from the staff, and a challenging course in great condition.

Don't just take our word for it…the day after we visited, three-time major winner Padraig Harrington played The Island on a charity day - a sure sign that this is one of Ireland's finest links. And you no longer have to take a rowing boat to get there….
