We are delving into the history books in this episode…because recent research indicates that Lanark is the oldest inland golf course in the world.

They've been playing here since 1851, with Old Tom Morris and James Braid lending their expertise to its design.

Its location means it may be an excellent option on your way to or from a Scottish golfing holiday….

Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire, England30 Oct 202500:38:45

Stoke Park was the setting for one of the most famous moments in golf, albeit a fictional match.

Its proximity to Pinewood film studios meant it was the perfect spot to film James Bond's match against Auric Goldfinger in the 007 movie released in 1964.

Now in the hands of a real-life billionaire, Stoke Park has quite a story of its own. The club closed for several years and had its membership abolished before reopening as an exclusive pay-and-play venue.

Narin & Portnoo, Donegal, Ireland15 Sep 202500:37:53

There are some links courses where golfers will never see the sea, and then there are some that hug the coastline so tightly that the beach is a tempting diversion.

At Narin & Portnoo, they tell the story of a German couple who thought they had got lost but emerged several hours late to say they had decided to have a picnic on the beach.

Needless to say, the views on this Donegal gem are tremendous, and so are the holes.

And find out why the comedy moment was inches away from being a magnum of champagne moment.

Who? What? Why?16 Apr 202400:11:17

Who are we and why are we reviewing top golf courses?

www.thegolfpilgrim.com

Neil White is a retired journalist who is obsessed with lists.  Every year he attempts to see and review every movie released in the UK, and now he is attempting to play every course in the Top 100 list in England, the UK and Ireland, continental Europe...and ultimately, the world.  He's an accredited rater for National Club Golfer, and a member of Chilwell Manor and Silloth on Solway.  His golf course reviews can be found at www.thegolfpilgrim.com.

Ian Woods is a freelance TV reporter with ITV News, after a long career at BBC News and Sky News.  He's a former captain of the Press Golfing Society and a member of Fulwell Golf Club.

Ullna, Stockholm, Sweden09 Sep 202500:28:33

There's never been a sportsman like Sven Tumba.  After playing Ice hockey at the Winter Olympics and football in the European Cup, he turned his attention to golf, became a professional, and represented Sweden in the World Cup.  Oh, and he was also Sweden's best waterskier.

He's credited with popularising golf in Sweden, and designed the course at Ullna which opened in 1981.  When it needed a revamp, he called up his friend Jack Nicklaus to oversee it.

The course is now rated one of the best in continental Europe.

Åland (Castle), Åland Islands, Finland16 Aug 202500:35:50

A hundred years ago, the Åland Islands were the subject of an international dispute that had to be settled by the League of Nations.  Are they Finnish or Swedish?

A tale of two courses…one which has mysteriously slipped out of Europe's Top 100 list, while its once lesser-ranked twin has overtaken it.

At one point Kytäjä’s South-East course was rated as high as 65th in the continental list and was Number One in Finland. But this stylish resort sited between a forest and a gorgeous lake is definitely worth a visit.

Western Gailes, on a narrow strip of land between the Ayrshire coast and a railway line is a tough test for any golfer.  That's why it's been used as an Open qualifying venue and recently staged the Scottish women's amateur championship. Linna, Kanta-Häme, Finland27 Jul 202500:36:17

Finland is often rated as the happiest nation in the world.  Is it because of its high standard of living? Is it the beauty of the landscape, or because Finns spend so much time in saunas? Or could it be because they have some beautiful golf courses like Linna which feature in continental Europe's Top 100?

One of the holes on this course was designed by the winner of a competition - and Dave Sampson went on to have a successful career as a golf architect.  We talk to him about Linna, as well as his most famous creation - the Marco Simone course near Rome which staged the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Camberley Heath, Surrey, England22 Jul 202500:35:26

There are so many highly rated courses in this part of England, that Camberley Heath probably doesn't get the attention it deserves, even though it's in England's Top 100.

But this Harry Colt heathland gem should be on your must-play list, and not just because it's a good deal cheaper to play than many of its illustrious Surrey neighbours. Towering pines line the fairways, and there are plenty of elevation changes to make for a challenging, but fun round.

Goswick Links, Northumberland, England24 Mar 202500:33:01

Rail passengers speeding from London to Edinburgh will catch a glimpse of this pure links course as they approach Berwick-upon-Tweed.  Golfers heading to Scotland by road will need to make a short detour off the A1. It's well worth it.

Despite being highly ranked, Goswick's remote location means the club work hard to improve and promote the course to attract more visitors.  It means it's great value for money.

Ian gets a guided tour of the changes being planned which should make it even better.

North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland19 Mar 202500:41:47

Champagne corks are popping and why not? There are very few courses in the world that are as good as North Berwick, and are as much fun to play.

Other Scottish courses may host The Open and other major championshps —  North Berwick isn't big enough to do that.  But the number of top professionals who pay to visit when in the area is testament to how highly it is rated.

Neil describes his best ever round on a Top 100 course while Ian has to make do with comedy..but both of us left North Berwick with a huge smile on our faces.

Alwoodley, West Yorkshire, England14 Mar 202500:40:03

When doctor-turned-golf archietct, Alister MacKenzie unveiled the design for his very first course, even fellow members of this Yorkshire club were a little sceptical.  They asked for a second opinion.  Harry Colt took a look and gave it the thumbs up.

After that, MacKenzie was in demand designing courses which are still among the very best in the world.  Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne…

Respect the history, but enjoy the present…because Alwoodley merits its place among the top courses in the UK.
