Segment 4 Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions

Q:So I just transplanted my starts about 3 days ago. They all now look sad. Will it just take a few days for them to perk back up after roots set?

Also after transplanting they take up a lot more room, this in turn has them spread out a bit more then what i think my grow lights cover. im in zone 5a with a last frost of may 11th roughly. Is there a way to test the light at my plants to make sure they get enough? if not when can i start hardening them off and taking them out to my unheated greenhouse?

A: Typically yes they will look sad for a few days after transplanting do to rood shock just keep them watered and warm and they should come back if you did not damage the roots.
There are light meter they can be bought to test the light strengths. You can also put your tomato plants the farthest away from the lights because if they do get leggy you can just plant deeper. I would not take plants out to the greenhouse until the night temps are 50F steady in the greenhouse they maybe enough warm gathered during the day to keep it that at night but also day time temps may get very hot too.

Q: Newbie here! My hubby and I are experimenting (me with soil/him with hydro)We built a raised bed 4'x4'x16" and filled with garden soil from a local nursery and topped with compost from horse/cow barn. I plan to put 4-5 Early Girl tomato seedlings in it soon. Would it be too much to add some summer squash zucchini plants between them? I have a house rabbit and will have plenty of season long pellets to add if needed Just worried about crowding roots.

Q:Johnny
I'm confused about sometimes hearing that there are things that can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked...I live here in southeastern Wisconsin as well and I have everything prepped for planting and ground is thawed...Can I sow radish and beet seeds right now even though seed package says after danger of frost ? Thanks
A:Yes you can radish and beets as Colder temperatures (26-31 degrees F.) may burn foliage but will not kill broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, lettuce, mustard, onion, radish, and turnip. The real cold weather champs are beets, Brussels sprouts, carrots, collards, kale, parsley, and spinach.and beets

Q: Kim ask Another indoor seed starting question--plants are coming up and are under grow lights. Do they still need the warming pads or can I use the warming pads to start some more seeds?
A: once the seeds have come up you do not need the heating mat anymore

In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about how bad garden tips on Social media.

Mounting little planters, vertical strawberry, rain gutters, etc - little soil
Potato box
Planting in egg shells/egg cartons
Seeds that seem too good to be true
Companion plantings
Volcano mulching

Stop slugs having a ball
The tip Copper is reputed to repel slugs, so take an old bowling ball (you’ve got one of those lying around, right?), glue pennies (or 2p pieces) to it, so they cover the surface, and use it as a decorative garden object that doubles as a slug barrier. (And if you want it to shine, soak the coins in cola first.)

The catch Not only is it debatable how decorative this actually looks, it’s also hard to be convinced by its efficacy as an anti-slug device. These days, British 1p and 2p “coppers” are made from copper-plated steel, plus there is at best only patchy evidence that copper repels slugs in the first place. Dr Ian Bedford, head of entomology at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, has lab-tested copper slug repellers and found no evidence that they work. And even if copper did dissuade slugs, you’d need a whole bowling alley’s worth of coin-covered balls to have any meaningful effect. As Bedford points out, “You put a bowling ball in the middle of your lawn, but what’s to stop them eating the plants in your border?”

The alternative Go ahead and make your ball; just don’t expect it to deter slugs. For that, use a biological control such as Nemaslug or a nightly slug patrol.

Nail those blue hydrangeas
The tip Gather up those rusty nails from the back of the shed and put them in the ground around hydrangeas to correct an iron deficiency, increase acidity in the soil and, in the process, turn their blooms from pink to blue.

The catch None of it works. Here’s a mini-science lesson from Guy Barter, the RHS’s chief horticultural adviser: “Almost all soils contain a lot of iron, but it becomes unavailable to plants – especially ericaceous ones such as rhododendrons – in alkaline soils,” he says. “Adding iron nails to alkaline soil merely slowly adds a very small amount of iron to the pool of chemically locked-up iron in the soil. It is soil aluminium that influences hydrangea flower colour, and aluminium is most available to plants in the acid soils associated with blue hydrangeas.”

The alternative Add sulphur dust, not nails, to soil to increase acidity. Aluminium sulphate, often sold as hydrangea-blueing compound, is the best product to change flower colour in hydrangeas – try Vitax’s Hydrangea Colourant. Plants with iron deficiency suffer yellowing patches between the veins. Barter recommends treating them with chelated iron, an organic compound that prevents lock-up in the soil, allowing plants to absorb the iron they need.

Dish it out to the weeds
The tip Kill weeds by spraying them with a homemade brew of vinegar, epsom salts and washing-up liquid mixed with water. This mix of ingredients commonly found in our homes is touted as safer for pets and children than shop-bought weed treatments.

The catch Home remedies such as this are often billed as “all-natural”, but have you looked at the ingredients of washing-up liquid recently? Plus, it’s illegal under EU law to concoct homemade weedkillers from household ingredients (what happens after Brexit is a moot point). Linda Chalker-Scott, associate professor at Washington State University’s department of horticulture, spends her life arguing against such poor gardening advice. She points out that household products aren’t formulated for this kind of use: “You have a concoction that will strip away the protective layers of plants and associated organisms, which is not a sustainable way to approach weed control,” she says.

The alternative If you choose not to garden organically, buy a proprietary weedkiller and follow the instructions to the letter. Organic gardeners can control weeds with hoeing, mulching and hand-pulling. To remove weeds between paving slabs and other tricky-to-treat areas, Garden Organic recommends a flame weeder that uses propane or paraffin to kill weed plants and seeds.

Topics: Joey and Holly talks Talk about in segment 1 - vegetable and herbs you can grow in Partial shade.
Plants you can grow in partial shade

Mint
Mint is probably a best choice for shaded position. If you think to plant it in your shady backyard, just grow it in a confined space. Otherwise it will spread like a weed.

Malabar Spinach
Malabar spinach is a climbing spinach grows in tropics. It grows in part shade and moist soil, you can grow this green leafy vegetable in shade year round if your climate is frost free, otherwise grow it as annual

Pak choi/bok choy/ asian greens
Pak choi or bak choi is also called Chinese cabbage, a diverse plant you can grow from spring to fall. It likes cool weather, you can grow it in shade easily.

Cherry tomatoes

Arugul Asparagus Beets Bok Choi Broccoli Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage Carrots Cauliflower Celery Chinese Cabbage Garlic
Horseradish Kale Kohlrabi Leeks Lettuce Mizuna
Mustard Greens Parsnip Peas Potatoes Radish Rhubarb
Rutabaga Scallions Spinach Swiss Chard Turnip

Tips for Growing Vegetables in Shade:
Use Good Soil: If you are going to challenge your shade-tolerant crops to grow in partial shade, provide them with good-quality soil with plenty of nutritious compost. If tree roots are a problem, consider using a raised bed or growing vegetables in containers.

Moisture Requirements: The watering needs of your shade garden will be different than a garden in full sun. Moisture doesn’t evaporate as quickly in shade so you may not need to water as often. However, if your shade garden is near trees, you may need to water more frequently since your plants will be competing with trees for moisture. Also the leafy canopy can prevent rain from reaching your plants. Water when the soil feels dry and mulch to conserve moisture.

Watch for Pests: Shady and cool areas are very welcoming to slugs and snails. Consider using a border of crushed eggshells to deter slugs or provide a hospitable living area to Attract Frogs and Toads to Your Garden.

Maturation Times: Vegetables that prefer more sunlight but can grow in shade will grow slower. Expect to wait for a little longer for the plants to mature than what is indicated on the seed package to make up for the less than ideal growing conditions.

Start Seedlings Indoors: Start your own transplants from seed indoors and plant them in your shade garden when space opens up with these 10 Steps to Starting Seedlings Indoors.

Direct Sow Seeds in Your Garden: Some crops are easy to grow from seeds planted directly in your garden. Here are 13 Easy Vegetables to Direct Sow

Succession Planting: Keep your garden beds producing throughout your growing season with these 3 Succession Planting Tips to Maximize Your Harvest.

Experiment with a small shade garden and see which vegetables succeed. Also try growing in containers that can be moved to different locations. Knowing the type of vegetables that grow in shade will help you make the most out of your gardening space.

White walls
If possible white wash your walls and use other light colors around the plants. As a result, the light will reflect back better and your plants will get more indirect light.

Reflective Mulching
Do reflective mulching for the plants grown in part shade. It will reflect the light and heat on plants.

Moisture
In the shade you need to be careful as moisture quickly develops all kinds of diseases. Provide good ventilation and drainage to plants and do not place them too close together.

Patience
Patience is must when you are growing plants in shade. Generally plants grow weaker in shade except those who love shade naturally. It is normal that they will grow little more slowly.

Darker and Bigger Leaves
Plants in shady areas tend to have darker and bigger leaves than those that grow in the sun and there is nothing to worry about this.

In Segment 3 Joey and Holly welcome their guest Author Ellen Zachos of https://www.backyardforager.com/

Ellen Zachos is passionate about foraging, plants and food. She wants to share that passion with you. Are you curious about foraging? Are you passionate about food? Are you nervous about getting started? Ellen is willing to show you and teach you how to do it right here new book She had wrote a number of great book including Backyard Foraging The Wildcrafted Cocktail,Growing Healthy Houseplants to name a few she also has online courses videos and podcast to learn from. Here website is www.backyardforager.com

1.It sounds like a simple question but what is foraging and how did you get into the are of foraging ?
2.I will loop myself (Joey) into this category when I hear the term foraging I think about walking way back in the woods and looking to wild edibles. But that is not so much the case you can look at the plants you have growing around your home or street. What are some overlooked items we can forage for that are very close to us

(hostas and daylilies milkweed) ,
3. What is the best way to be 100% sure of identification of the plants you are foraging for?

We are talking with Ellen Zachos author podcaster garden speaker foragor

4. Let talk about Orchids for a moment you have wrote a Orchid Growing for Wimps: Techniques for the "Wish I Could Do That" Gardener. We have heard the Orchid are very hard to grow how true or untrue is that statement

5. Where can we find more about you get your books podcast online courses at?

In segment 4 Joey and Holly answer your garden questions

1 Q - If I stack one bale on top of another. Would I condition the bottom bale also? Could I put off planting since the bale would be sitting conditioned for 3-4 weeks before planting?
A - if you stacked the bales you would not condition the bottom one. You would also want to put
The bottom bale on its side, so the cut side is perpendicular to the ground. The one you plant you want the cut side up - so when youre looking down on it you can see the straws. If you condition the bale and then the weather turns bad and you have to wait a couple weeks that is fine too.
Q: 2 I have this shady balcony in our home that receives only direct morning sunlight, do u think
could grow rhubarb
over there?? Also I'm a zone 11
A:Rhubarb grows in zone 2 to 8. It requires an extended chilling period below 40 degrees F, in order to
produce stems after winter. It can be grown as an annual from seed in zones 9 and 10, but the stalks will be smaller and less robust. There are several common varieties of rhubarb available to the home gardener.

Comment Barbara
Would say you planted them full moon they will come up as do tuplis or other bulbs planted in full moon my grandfather taught me that as a child goes for fence post roofing too

Q. Some of our herbs and other plants (as well as flowers) were also attacked by Asian (Japanese?) beetles last year. What do you suggest to use to keep those away?
A:One thing you can do is use the japanese beetle traps but dont put them in your garden, put them at the opposite end of your yard. This will trap them, but not attract them to your garden. or this website has products to help control japanese beetles without harmful chemicals. http://www.phyllombioproducts.com/products.html

Q: We am looking to invest some garden space for perennials - I have a small urban
backyard We just bought a house and we are thinking strawberries, asparagus, or berry
bushes.Since we don’t have a lot of space, is it smart to grow perennials that will take
up a permanent spot for many years

In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about how to build raised beds correctly
Rootmaker has 4 x 4 ft 12 in ht and 2 x 4 12in ht to 36 inches x 15 in height 60 gallon grow bags, beds
1. Untreated or *treated lumber cider
*Back in the 90s wood was treated with very Arsenic, that has been changed is treated with ACQ, for alkaline copper quaternary. The wood meets the same standards for above ground and ground contact as arsenic-treated wood. It is safe for use in raised bed the plastic deck lumber I think would heat up to much and heat the soil as well not a bad thing in the early or late part of the year but during the hot summer in may not be good for the soil.
Paint the wood.

AS high as you want but not shorter than 8 inches no root crops 10 to 12 for root crops

2 Make the bed a wide as you can reach half way on each side typically that is 2 foot x 2 4 food wide put something down so you don't have weeds
3, Plan for irrigation even if you don’t think your going to have system
4. Spacing of your beds 2 ft apart or 3 or 4 ft if our going to be using a wheelbarrow or chart
5. Do not add garden soil to the bed reach out to your local independent garden center (here in Milwaukee that is Bluemel’s landscape and garden center) as they will have a mix in bulk that you can fill the beds with

Additionally this about making hoops to extend your season in spring and fall

Topics: Joey and Holly talks Talk about in segment 1 - Why we do not till our garden

1. We don’t own a tiller yes we could borrow or rent one but that not the reason we do not till
Tilling Creates Major Weed Problems Want less weeds? Then stop Rototilling. 2.Rototillers cause more weeds than they ever come close to eliminating.
3. Tilling Creates The Problem Of Bare Soil When it comes to preparing beds for planting, leaving the soil bare causes a whole slew of issues that go beyond leaving an opening for weed seeds to find a home.
Exposed, barren soil is primed and ready for erosion. Heavy rains leach vital nutrients from bare soil with ease. And even slight winds can carry the top 1/8 to 1/4 inch of exposed garden soil away as well.
If that isn’t enough, bare soil dries out quickly. And when it does, it leaves plants thirsty in a hurry.
Nicely tilled rows between plants might look “well-kept”, but in reality, they really lead to more weeds, and a loss of critical topsoil and water.
4. Tilling Destroys Soil Structure
Healthy soil is all about structure.
Great soil is filled with billions of helpful bacteria, worms and microorganisms. And, it should also contain all types of organic matter in various stages of decay.
All of the above play a huge role in bringing and supplying nutrients to your plants.
The little bits and pieces of organic matter and organisms work together to allow water, air and nutrients to be absorbed by roots.
Unfortunately, tilling the soil destroys that entire symbiotic process.
As soil is tilled over and over, the all-important soil structure is
compromised.
In addition, the active life in the soil (worms and organisms) are disrupted and exposed.
5 Soil Compaction – Stunting Plant
Every time you walk near the plants in your garden, you compress the soil.
And when that soil is pulverized and loose, it compacts even easier.
Compacted soil around the roots causes big problems for plants. It makes it harder for water and air to get through – resulting in under performing plants
Poor structure also makes it difficult for the soil to retain moisture – also a critical factor in a plant’s growth and success.
And last – whether you have a rear tine tiller, front tine tiller – you still have to walk behind it or beside it – compacting even more of the very soil you are trying to break up.
6. Tilling Can Delay Garden Season
If the four reasons above aren’t enough to keep from tilling the garden, here is one final reason to avoid the tiller when preparing garden beds for planting: waiting for the soil to dry out!
How many times have you heard someone say “I couldn’t get my tiller in the soil until late Spring because it was so wet.”
With a no-till approach, your soil structure drains better and can be worked sooner. It also leads to earlier harvest times because the plants can go in sooner.Beyond that, tilling at the wrong time creates serious additional damage to the soil structure.
If it’s too wet, it results in clumpy and muddy soil. Too dry, and the rototiller destroys the little soil structure remaining.
Both issues make it harder for the soil to hold in moisture and nutrients.
The result? The need for more watering and fertilizers for the soil to make up for the lack of naturally available nutrients.
It becomes a vicious cycle that causes more work for the gardener.
7. The Answer To Preparing Garden Beds For Planting Successfully
So what is the best solution for preparing garden beds for planting?
It all starts with using mulch in place of the tiller to stop weeds. And using cover crops every fall to keep your garden covered and rejuvenated.

It all starts with using mulch in place of the tiller to stop weeds. And using cover crops every fall to keep your garden covered and rejuvenated.

In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about how to build raised beds correctly
Rootmaker has 4 x 4 ft 12 in ht and 2 x 4 12in ht to 36 inches x 15 in height 60 gallon grow bags, beds

4. Let's talk about some of the benefits of plants we grow in our garden and you talk about these in your book The Illustrated Herbiary
Rosemary
Roses
Dandelions
5. Where can our listeners find more about you and get your book?

Joey and Holly answer your garden questions
Q: When is a good start time for planting Peas,

A: Since peas are a cool weather crop, they can withstand some cold temperatures. The ideal temperature for growing peas is between 55 to 70 degrees F. Q Can I put a raised bed with liner on my rock patio?

Q: have red potatoes that have spudded and I've been saving to plant. When can i plant them? Zone five. I see i have onions growing that were left from last year growing already outside. J.w if it was safe to throw the tatters in? Please and thank you zone 5

Q Will white butterfly affect radishes? Ive heard yes and no. Im trying to decide if i need to cover them or not.

A: no that will not as they will take 30 days to grow they will be fine

Q.what should soil temp be to direct sow cucumbers?
OR can i direct sow colder and put a heat row cover over them?

Q: Can I grow a zucchini plant in a 12 inch pot?

Q:Last season I planted tomato plants in 15 and 20 gallon grow bags. They did extremely well. I used a mixture of 60% compost (Purple Cow) and 40% potting soil (Miracle Grow). My questions:
What do you recommend to rejuvenate the medium in the bags? Replace all of the soil with new compost and potting soil? If not, what amount/percentage should be replaced?
And...if you recommend replacing just part of the soil....what method should I use? Skim off the top of each bag or dump the bags out....mix in the new...and refill?

A:You can take off the top 25% of potting soil and then add compost. You dont have to mix it up. Then, at the time of planting, fertilize as you normally do.

Q:Hi...if a runner has daughter plants with established roots could you cut the cord and plant it..or does it still have to be attached to the mother plant?thanks...also what do you cover your strawberry patch with to protect in in winter? Thanks

In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about what plant you can grow that will give you a big return a big harvest
1. bush beans 3 to 5 pounds from a similarly planted 10-foot row plant ever 2 weeks
-Pole beans .Pole beans yield two to three times more than bush beans from the same space, are easier to harvest, except pole beans need a 5- to 8-foot-tall support.
2.zucchine (high-value crop ) One zucchini plant will yield, on average, three to nine pounds,
3. Tomatoes On average, a staked tomato plant will produce an estimated 8 pounds per plant, while plants trained via trellis or cage produce an average estimate of 12 to 20 pounds per plant. Cherry tomato up to 300 tomatoes
4. Cucumbers When you pick cucumbers every other day, this makes the plants continue to produced fruit over a longer harvesting period.
- If you plant cucumbers to use for pickling, plan on growing 3 to 4 plants per each quart of pickles you want to make. Generally, a healthy pickling cucumber plant produces about 5 pounds of cucumbers per plant.
-If you plant cucumbers for slicing and eating fresh, plan on growing about 2 to 3 plants per person in your household; healthy plants generally grow 10, 6-ounce cucumbers per plant. Heirloom cucumber varieties generally produce less fruit, which is about 2 to 3 pounds of fruit per healthy plant.
5. Carrots. Yield 7 to 10 pounds per 10-foot row. Thin plants to 1½ to 2 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart.
6.Okra. Yield 5 to 10 pounds per 10-foot row. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 2½ to 4 feet apart.
7. Pepper. Yield 5 to 18 pounds per 10-foot row
8.Rutabaga. Yield 8 to 30 pounds per 10-foot row. Space plants 4 to 6 inches

In segment 4 Joey and Holly answer your garden questions
Q:i planted my onion seeds in potting mix. did i mess up? i saw on your video u used potting soil. will they turn out?

A Potting mix is used in container gardening. The best quality potting soils do not contain soil (dirt); they are called soil because we grow plants in the material.Potting or soil-less mix is actually a mixture of peat moss, pine bark and organic materials. ... Select potting mix when planting a container garden.

Q: what nite temp can i take my mulch off my garlic? its 23 at nite and 40 in day right now am from ND.

Q:
Hello... could you recommend reputable seed vendor? (I went to the a Seed site... and was informed that their site was not secure so, I exited) I'd like to order a variety of seeds... but, a secure site is a MUST. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Yes www.MIgardener.com

Q: That is very interesting about cinnamon & dampening off ! I know that the cheaper cinnamon you buy in most grocery stores is NOT real cinnamon & not good for you. Real cinnamon, I believe comes from Ceylon, etc. & is a lot more expensive. So ~ does it matter which one you use ? I have heard that the cheap stuff is only good for pest control in the garden.

A: The cheap cinnamon will work.

Q The deer decimated our veggie garden last summer. We would like to build a fence around it with a gate. (Something more aesthetically pleasing.) How high do we need to make it to feel like we are protected?
Deer can jump up to 8 feet high; however you dont necessarily need an 8 foot fence. You could build a 6 foot fence with slight slanting and this would throw them off.

Q. I planted peppers 2 wks ago. Only 4 came up. Should I throw the rest or give it more time?

A:Give them more time we planted ours 2 weeks ago also and about half have come up with a few more each day they can take up to 21 days keep the soil damp and the room they are in warm

Q My onions I started 8 days ago. Not coming up. On a heat blanket covered. .A:Warm area is key you have that they can take up to 14 days to sprout and then remove them from the heat
Should I take them off and put them under grow lights? Or just wait longer?

A: once they begin to sprout then you can put them under the grow light.

Q How to deal with slugs organically

Q can I use coffee grounds as mulch

In segment 2 Joey and Holly talk about 5 Rules of gardening.
1. Visit Your Garden Frequently
There’s an old adage that goes “The best thing for a garden is the shadow of the gardener,” meaning the gardeners who spend a lot of time in their gardens notice problems while their gardens are still small and manageable. Regular monitoring is how to detect pests and diseases before they get out of control, and what could be nicer than a daily stroll through your own little paradise?
2. Focus on preventing problems more than curing them. Proper preparation and appropriate choices favor plant vigor. Vigorous plants avoid most diseases and pests.
3. If problems occur, identify the pest, weed, or disease, before treating it. Ask Extension Master Gardeners, garden centers or go online to accurately identify your problem. Do not apply fertilizer or chemicals to a sick plant unless you know what ails it.
4.Start with a soil test, taken after you have applied organic amendments. Many organic matter amendments (compost, conditioners) have high nutrient levels and you may over-apply fertilizers or lime if you sample before adding the organic matter amendments. Low or high pH or fertility can stunt growth, burn roots, and stress plants.
5. Mulch to reduce weeds and maintain soil moisture, but don’t apply it thicker than 2 to 4 inches. Roots must breathe to stay healthy, so small root systems need less mulch. Mulch volcaoes are not good for trees, as they can hold water and smother roots.
6. Don’t fight a recurring problem – change something. If moss is growing in your lawn, you have a wet or shady area. Grow moss or ferns, fix the drainage problem, or cut down the tree if you want grass.

Topics: Joey and Holly talks Talk about in segment 1 what you need to know before buying plants at your local nursery.

Things to be aware of when buying plants from your local garden center or nursery (we will reference Bluemel’s)
1. Not every plant they sell can be planted outside in your area year round – tropicals, other zones, citrus, etc
2. If it doesn’t look healthy doesn’t mean you can make it healthy – look for signs of disease
3. We recommend go to an independent garden center vs a garden department at a big box store
4. Don’t be afraid to talk to the staff and ask questions – they are there to help – google may not give you everything you need to know
5. Don’t buy vegetables in full bloom
6. Look at all your options – they may have a variety that will work better for you than what you went in for
7. garden center that values and promotes education
8. Determine what you will do with said plant before you buy it – don’t buy just because you might have a spot for it
-Pay attention to the quality of employees you see as it reflects a lot about the business itself. If the employees seem to not care, neither does the management.

-Do not be shocked if you see a plant or two with bugs or signs of a disease. ALL garden centers (even the good ones) have to battle these issues and it is hard to be perfect when you are maintaining thousands of plants! Shop with caution, but stay away from garden centers where majority of their inventory seems infected.

-Don’t be afraid to offer your suggestions and input. Garden centers with solid management will appreciate hearing from their customers. Tell them what you like/dislike. Don’t forget to compliment as well!

-If you purchase a plant and then experience issues- notify the garden center as soon as you see any signs of plant distress. 9 out of 10 times a good garden center will be able to address and solve the problem. Don’t let the problem persist as your issue may then progress to the point of being un-reversable.

Topics: Joey and Holly answer gardeners questions

Q:I’m new at this. Is there a master list somewhere that tells you how many seeds to start per cell? I’m hoping to start tomatoes and peppers inside, along with basil cilantro parsley and mint. But I can’t find anything that tells you how many seeds to throw in the hole

Q:I have had problems with what I found out was damping off with my seedlings. I don’t fully understand what it is and or how best to prevent it from happening this year.

Q: Betsy ask: I have grown leeks for years, but lately they are almost all bolting. What is going on?

Q: I also have an abundance of Oak Leaves, I could bring that over and use it as a mulch, right? Someone told me that Oak Leaves would kill a garden,

Topics: Joey and Holly talks with their guest Vinnie Simeone of https://www.vincentsimeone.com/ who stop by. He is an author, blogger, lecturer, and has worked in the horticultural field for over 27 years. He has study under some well-known horticultural professors. He has spoken to many groups nationwide and has appeared on several garden shows including Martha Stewart Living and HGTV. He has also written 6 books since 2005.

Some of the question that Joey and Holly ask Vinnie.
1.A lot of people use bobbex deer repellant – but there are a lot of deer resistant plants – what are some that can be used all over the northern US?
2.We love mulch – there’s a lot of synthetic and conventional mulch options, we like leaves as they are sustainable – what are some of your best sustainable mulch picks?
3.When people are establishing a landscape around their new home or redoing a landscape – what are 2 big mistakes people make?
4.For people who have pets that roam their garden/landscape – what are some common plants – decorative and edible – that they should avoid?
5.Many people plant exotics that could potentially be invasive – how can this be avoided? Can some invasive species be planted safely?
6.Tell us about your books briefly and where to find out more about you?

Topics: Joey and Holly talks about in segment 1 the job of planning and planting your garden this year.
Segment 2 Joey and Holly look at what you need to know before buying or building a greenhouse for your property.

Their guest Vinnie Simeone of https://www.vincentsimeone.com/ stop by is an author, blogger, lecturer, and has worked in the horticultural field for over 27 years.
