The Fallout Series: From Pixels to TV Screens 10 Jun 202400:41:49

Send us a text

How do video game adaptations shape our identities and serve as modern-day myths? Join Dr. Gameology and Jenny LeBron on the Gaming Persona Podcast as we unravel the impact of gaming on who we become. This episode kicks off with updates from our recent gaming escapades. Jenny dives deep into her thrilling adventures with "Legends of Runeterra" and her newfound obsession with the "A Court of Thorns and Roses" book series. Meanwhile, I’m bubbling over with excitement about completing "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" and the satisfaction of hitting my in-game milestones. We also touch on the much-anticipated Fallout TV show and the juggling act of balancing our gaming lives with everyday responsibilities.

Shifting gears, we explore the burgeoning trend of video game adaptations gracing our screens, turning beloved games into shared cultural stories. From The Last of Us to the Mario movie, and Halo, we discuss how these adaptations become the modern-day mythology that connects diverse audiences. Jenny shares her personal experience with the Fallout TV show and delves into the show's metaphor of leaving the vault as a powerful symbol for life's pivotal transitions. This segment offers a deeper reflection on the bravery required to chase our goals and the inevitable challenges we encounter along the way.

In our final segment, we tackle the captivating topic of moral decision-making in video games. Comparing the ambiguous choices in Fallout's morality system to the clear-cut paths in Star Wars: The Old Republic, we engage in a lively debate about which character from the Fallout TV show mirrors our own moral play styles. Lucy, Maximus, or the ghoul—which one resonates with you? We also highlight how these TV adaptations bring together gamers and non-gamers alike, creating a shared space for bonding over structured storytelling and rich lore. Tune in as we celebrate our gamer identities and look forward to the future of gaming and TV crossovers, hinting at the endless possibilities they hold.

Life's a game, and we're all players—sometimes leveling up, sometimes facing the final boss in the form of daily challenges. That's the essence we're exploring today, as I recount the rollercoaster of moving into a new home, creating a sanctuary for my gaming passion, and grappling with the bittersweet symphony of Final Fantasy VII's legacy and its rebirth. Meanwhile, Jenny LeBron pulls back the curtain on her own saga, tackling the consistency of Legends of Runeterra amidst navigating the turbulent waters of her professional world and health. Gene Wong offers a breath of fresh air with his musings on the changing of seasons, and we take a moment to shout out to Kaylee Lopez from the Anthropology and Gaming podcast for her invaluable support in keeping our community engaged and our discussions vibrant.

Let's talk pixels and personas as we journey into the intricacies of world-building and side quests, with a focus on Chadley's role in the Final Fantasy VII Remake. As we dissect the shift to 3D open worlds and the strategic play involved in the seemingly mundane tasks that fortify our characters, we also ponder the more controversial aspects, like the omnipresent microtransactions that are reshaping our beloved pastime. For those with their ear to the gaming ground, you'll appreciate my personal anticipation for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth—and the lengths I'll go to avoid spoilers. So power up your consoles, press play on this episode, and join us as we piece together the mosaic of gaming and its undeniable influence on the everyday.

Send us a text

Picture this: you're playing a classic video game on your new console, the familiar worlds and characters rendered in stunning modern graphics, the original gameplay intact. But how do these old games come to life in our modern systems? Robin Lavallée, CEO of Implicit Conversions, takes us behind the scenes of game preservation and porting in this episode. With experiences spanning from the PSP to Ubisoft, Robin's gaming wisdom is as broad as it is deep.

Think back to your favorite old games, the features that made them unique, the bugs that became features, and the feel of the controls in your hands. Now imagine bringing those games to a modern audience without losing any of their charm. Robin guides us through this intricate process, from preserving unique bugs in Final Fantasy VII to adapting control systems for new platforms. We dig into the art of choosing games for porting, and the challenges of finding testers who aren't familiar with the original game.

But it doesn't stop there. Robin also gives us a peek into the world of Implicit Conversions, a company dedicated to keeping classic games alive for the current generation of gamers. We explore the joy of playing old games on new systems, and the importance of making them not just playable, but fun. So, join us on this journey through the heart of game development and preservation, and rediscover the magic of your favorite games.
