Season 12 of The Gaming Backlog "Book Club” covers Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. We discuss our expectations for the games based on what we know of the Mario and Sonic franchises, which is a considerable amount, but certainly not to a deep lore level. But hey, it’s practically impossible to be an enjoyer of video games, casual or hardcore, without having encountered one or both of these beloved game series. These two mascots were pitted against each other constantly in the 90’s, so we’ll be doing the same this season, seeing how much they are really worth comparing, and whether they still hold up in 2026. (Our money is on yes.)

Hosts Andrew and Alex chat about both the arcade and Super Nintendo versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. The nostalgia trip was well worth the time traveling adventure and made us appreciate the present iteration of this classic beat ‘em up even more. A game from 34 years ago could be considered the depths of the video game backlog and the fact it is even possible to revisit in the first place is much appreciated.
