Rod and Josh discuss the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), on business and life:  the talent crunch in the business valuation profession and the high salaries offered by large firms make it difficult for smaller firms to hire junior analysts.

Imagine growing your business without being able to hire additional staff - could AI be a solution to this constraint?

Key takeaways:

  • The importance of familiarizing oneself with AI and its potential applications in business valuation
  • How AI can be used to do a lot of tasks that you would hire a junior analyst to do.
  • Make time to learn the tool.  See the show notes for a list of great resources
  • Practical examples of how to use AI to assist with writing and due diligence prep

Valuation Court - Key Takeaways from Recent Cases18 Jan 202400:28:01

Natalya and Dave discuss several recent valuation cases that they presented at the 2023 AICPA FVS conference, including:

  • Whether PPP funds should be included in a marital dissolution valuation
  • A charitable stock donation where the appraisal was rejected because the investment banker doing it lacked proper credentials
  • A divorce case where the court relied on a minority interest sale price rather than the husband's expert, and
  • The Biltmore Estate case where the IRS lost arguing for an asset approach rather than an income approach

Dave and Natalya would like to hear from you about interesting cases, especially Canadian ones.   Please share your thoughts at infoFVS@aicpa-cima.com and put in the subject: podcast ep 79.

Guest:  Natalya Abdrasilova, CPA/ABV, MAFF, CVA, Director of Valuation & Litigation Services, BDM, PC

Is it the End for the Noncompete?20 Jul 202300:40:43

Hosts

Josh Shilts, CPA/ABV/CFF/CGMA, ASA, CFE. Shilts CPA, PLLC

Nene Gianfala, CPA/ABV, CEIV, ASA-BV/IA, Chaffe & Associates, Inc.

Guest:  Jennifer L. Anderson, JD, Baker Donelson

Jennifer Anderson joins Nene and Josh to discuss the Federal Trade Commissions’ (“FTC”) proposed rule to ban Non-Compete Agreements.  What’s at stake is employers’ ability to impose noncompete agreements on their workers. Noncompetes are a widespread and often exploitative practice that suppresses wages, hampers innovation and blocks entrepreneurs from starting new businesses.

Ms. Anderson provides in-depth analysis and insight on measures businesses can undertake to mitigate some of the perceived threats often understood to be ‘covered’ by a non-compete agreement.  Nene discusses the potential impact on the valuation of non-competes from a financial reporting perspective, while Josh mentions the repercussions it might have on non competes in a litigation context.
