Tim Finn – Escapade: The Album That Shaped Margaret’s Musical Journey | Sombr Train Split Enz

Saison 1 · Épisode 5

samedi 14 mars 2026Durée 33:12

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This week, I’m delighted to welcome my great friend, Margaret, dialling in from South London for a deep dive into her vinyl pick: Tim Finn’s 1983 debut solo album, Escapade.

Margaret shares warm, early musical memories, crediting her dad’s influence and explaining how Escapade — and its hit single, “Fraction Too Much Friction” — helped her learn English as a teenager in the Netherlands. She recounts the humorous discovery of the link between Split Enz, Tim Finn, and Neil Finn of Crowded House, and how music became a bridge across family and culture.

Along the way, we touch on how platforms like TikTok are shaping her kids’ musical education, and she recommends “Undressed” by Sombr. Stick around until the end to hear which track became the ultimate family singalong on long trips!

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This week, I connect across the globe with Lachie Holt, an inspirational New Zealand school teacher who turned a classroom project into a real-life vinyl record! Lachie and his Hamilton East students created a stunning tribute to Split Enz’s debut album Mental Notes, pressing it to vinyl and celebrating the music that inspired them.

We dive into the story behind this ambitious project, Lachie’s own musical journey — including the role his Grandad played — and why Mental Notes became the perfect creative inspiration.

We officially submit the original Split Enz classic to the Friday Vinyl Club, and Lachie also shares his current musical favourites, including Fat Freddy’s Drop, Mac DeMarco, and Cowboy Dan.

Fontaines D.C. – Skinty Fia: Plus Emily’s Journey from Blondie to her Mosh Pit Community | Kneecap

Saison 1 · Épisode 7

vendredi 13 mars 2026Durée 31:05

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode I’m delighted to welcome my beautiful niece, Emily, for a deep dive into her vinyl pick: Skinty Fia (2022) by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C.

Emily shares warm, early musical memories, citing her mum's influence (Celine Dion, Bee Gees) before her own tastes turned to heavier rock (Black Sabbath) and, eventually, the punk and DIY music scene where she found her community and confidence at live gigs. She explains how the energetic and poetic nature of Skinty Fia became a driving soundtrack to her running, and we delve into the album's dark themes and striking cover art, featuring the extinct Irish Elk.

Along the way, we touch on her love of intimate music venues like The Trades Club and The Piece Hall, her tendency to crowdsurf, the controversial brilliance of Irish hip-hop band Kneecap, and her thoughts on coloured vinyl. Stick around until the end to hear her current recommendations, including the ethereal sounds of Soria and the Japanese-based folk band Pinch of Snuff!

Editors – The Weight of Your Love: Plus Andy’s Journey from Borrowed Guitars to Crowded House Tribute Band | OMD / The Jam / Paul Weller/Neil Finn /SUPALUNG

Saison 1 · Épisode 9

vendredi 9 janvier 2026Durée 30:13

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by Andy Thomas from Birmingham. I first met Andy back at a gig in 2007, and over the years, I’ve had the privilege of becoming great friends with him and his family—I even once shared the stage with him to play tambourine for his Crowded House tribute band, Crowded Out!

Andy’s pick for this episode is the 2013 album The Weight of Your Love by the British band Editors. Recorded live in Nashville, this record marked a significant shift for the band, embracing a fresh Americana vibe with a cinematic sound.

Before we dive into the tracks, Andy takes us back to his very first musical memories. He shares a wonderful story of being a "wannabe drummer" in the early 70's, using a household pouffé as a bass drum and paintbrushes for drumsticks to play along to Top of the Pops.

We also discuss his first experiences with vinyl—from The Sweet’s Teenage Rampage to his eventual graduation to full-length albums like The Boomtown Rats’ A Tonic for the Troops.

Along the way, we explore:

  • The Live Evolution: Andy’s first concert experience with OMD at the Birmingham Odeon in 1981 and his deep dive into The Jam.
  • Becoming a Musician: How a "rubbish" borrowed guitar and a passion for Paul Weller led him from the bedroom to fronting the Crowded House Tribute Band Crowded Out
  • The Crowded House Connection: Our mutual love for Neil Finn and the unique magic of live shows that change every single night.
  • Friday Spin: Stick around for Andy's "Friday Spin" recommendation—the fantastic sounds of SUPALUNG!Hear key tracks from The Weight of Your Love on the Friday Vinyl Club Podcast Playlist:

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – No More Shall We Part: Plus Coffee Girl Katrine on 'The Vortex' and the Power of Community | Mitski | Flea | Neu Sierra | Robyn |Bowie / Swift

Saison 1 · Épisode 12

vendredi 30 janvier 2026Durée 49:54

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by the incredible Katrine from Copenhagen. A dear friend and founder of the Nick Cave fan community The Vortex, Katrine joins us to discuss a record that bridges the gap between haunting beauty and deep personal history.

Katrine’s pick is the 2001 masterpiece No More Shall We Part by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Marking Cave's return after a four-year hiatus, the album is a profound exploration of faith, love, and the fragile fear of losing what we cherish.

Katrine takes us back to her childhood in the Danish countryside, where her father’s avid vinyl collection—featuring everything from Pink Floyd and Leonard Cohen and her Mother taught her the "model man" was David Bowie, all laying the foundation for her own musical journey.

Along the way, we explore:

  • The Family Vinyl Collection: How Katrine came to "curate" some of her father's original vinyl collection a
  • The Power of Memory: The deeply moving story of listening to this album with her mother and how a live performance years later brought some "lost" memories rushing back.
  • The Hidden Gems: Beyond the more well known, we dive into the comedic genius of "God is in the House," the lyrical brilliance of "Darker With the Day," and the "chef’s kiss" transition between "Oh My Lord" and "Sweetheart Come."
  • The Vortex Community: A look at how a Bad Seed Tee Vee chatroom sparked a real life community named by Bad Seed band member Warren Ellis
  • The "Coffee Girl" Origin Story: How a simple ritual of cheers-ing Nick Cave with a coffee cup led to the man himself calling Katrine his "Danish Coffee Girl" and signing books specifically for her.
  • The "Concert Aunt": Katrine embraces her role as the family's dedicated barrier-seeker, from passing the vinyl tradition to her 15-year-old daughter to queuing 10 hours for Taylor Swift.

Friday Spin: Katrine delivers a diverse "starter pack" for your ears! Stick around for her top recommendations, including the alternative-pop powerhouse Mitski, the upcoming solo work from Flea, Robyn a Swedish Pop icon & her Danish obsession, Neu Sierra.
