48. Remembering Sevilla: The 2003 UEFA Cup Final

We're joined by the latest contributor to join the Football Heritage ranks, Jonee, to reminisce on the 2003 UEFA Cup Final between Celtic and Porto.

Instead of a tactical breakdown or analysis of the match, we instead describe our memories of watching the final, their feelings on the run up to the final and, in Jonee's case, what it was like watching his club win a European trophy.

We're joined by author James Stephen to talk about the history of the Edinburgh Derby, one of Scotland's biggest fixtures.

Often overshadowed by the Old Firm, the Edinburgh Derby can trace its roots to 1875, making it one of the oldest rivalries in Scotland. Like their Glasgow counterparts, the Edinburgh Derby is drenched in socio-political, economic and historical context.

We're joined by author and journalist Miguel L. Pereira to talk about Clube União Fabril, a club who were a former Portuguese powerhouse. They once registered a 3rd place finish and boasted a number of young talents in their ranks.

Kjøbenhavns Boldklub05 Aug 202400:48:12

42. Kjøbenhavns Boldklub

We're joined by Chris Lee and Flemming Christensen to tell the story of Denmark's (and potentially Europe's) oldest association football club.

Kjøbenhavns Boldklub, or KB, were a multi-sports organisation founded in 1876, with their football club being added in 1878. They were one of the early dominant forces in Danish football, but after falling from grace merged with Boldklubben 1903 to form FC København. We ask Flemming, who grew up supporting KB, what it was like being a part of Denmark's emerging ultras scene and if trading KB for FCK has been worth it.

The First Matildas: National or Representative?29 Jul 202400:47:45

41. The First Matildas: National or Representative?

We're joined by journalist and podcaster Sam Lewis to discuss the maelstrom of issues surrounding the 'first' Matildas team, a recent controversy which has reshaped Women's football in Australia.

Sam published an article at the beginning of July explaining the issues surrounding the 1975 side who played in what came to be recognised as the first Women's Asian Cup. Their recent recognition as the first Australian Women's National Team has been problematic and caused serious issues among the Matildas alumni.

Rory and Sam also discuss the difficulty in tracing historic records from Women's football and other common issues in studying one of football's most forgotten areas of history.

One History: AEK Athens01 Jul 202400:59:13

39. One History: AEK Athens

We're joined by Nikos and Thanos for a conversation about the history and heritage AEK Athens.

Founded by Greek migrants from Constantinople following the Greco-Turkish War, AEK Athens grew to become one of the most successful clubs in Greece. Their primary fan group, Original 21, are known for their anti-fascism and left-wing outlook, largely stemming from their heritage as a club founded by migrants who considered outsiders by both Turkish and Greek people.

This episode covers their history, the heritage and identity of the AEK Athens support, along with Nikos' and Thanos' memories of supporting the club.

Note: Due to connection problems, issues with sound quality were not flagged during the recording of this episode and only appeared afterward. We have tried to make it as easy on the ears as possible, but otherwise apologise for the poor quality of audio.

Jack Kirby09 Dec 202400:45:11

56. Jack Kirby

This week we're joined by Kal Singh Dhindsa, the person who successfully ran a recent campaign to restore the grave of former Derby County player Jack Kirby.

Jack Kirby is best remembered as the player who, during a football tour of Germany in 1934, refused to give the Nazi salute, instead choosing to turn his back on it.

We talk with Kal about the relevance of footballers in defying fascism and racism today, Kal's work in other football restoration projects and how the stories of former footballers can be used to empower people and places.

KV Oostende10 Jun 202401:00:39

36. KV Oostende

We're joined by Scott Coyne of The Belgian Football Podcast to unpack one of the biggest, shocking and most surprising tales from the world of football last month - the death of KV Oostende.

Recorded on the day they were finalising their bankruptcy, Scott gives context to their current situation, highlights the shady paper trails of their last owners and discusses the subject of multi-club ownership.

It goes without saying that we hope KV Oostende can return sooner rather than later, and our thoughts go out to the fans and everyone associated with the club.

Update: The club has been revived through merger in the form of K.V. Diksmuide-Oostende.

RBC Roosendaal03 Jun 202400:42:58

35. RBC Roosendaal

We're joined by Vincent Duitsch and Bas Brouwer to discuss one of The Netherlands' many football casualties - RBC Roosendaal.

Those of a certain vintage may remember RBC competing in the Eredivisie and in the final of the KNVB Cup against Ajax. Sadly, their collapse was greater than their rise.

A life-long RBC fan, Bas tells us why RBC were only ever an amateur-level club who punched above their weight, and we touch on how the much-maligned Dutch football pyramid plays into the demise of football clubs in the Netherlands.

Eisern! The Story of Union Berlin29 Apr 202401:17:15

30. Eisern! The Story of Union Berlin

We're is joined by English-German author and journalist Kit Holden to talk about one of Germany's most interesting clubs - 1. FC Union Berlin.

From their growth under the DDR to playing in the Champions League, Union Berlin have a phenomenal story and a unique fanbase. The circumstances of their existence, growth and identity make them one of the most interesting clubs to discuss from a heritage perspective, and as they become established in the Bundesliga, they continue to ride a fine balance between staying true to their roots and selling out completely.

We discuss the history of Union Berlin and the issues, events and conditions which led to their label as a 'rebel club', the identities of the fans and their role in the club and how Union traversed the oppression of East Germany to navigating modern capitalist football.

Kit is the author of 'Scheisse! We’re Going Up!', a book which documented the rise of Union Berlin and the crossroads they found themselves at at the time of writing. He has covered football for Der Tagesspiegel and AFP, and he has also written for The AthleticGuardian and Die Zeit. His second book 'Played in Germany' was released in June 2024.

55. Political Football

We're joined by Dr. Guy Burton and Dr. Francesco Belcastro, the hosts of The FootPol Podcast, for a discussion on what makes football political.

'Politics and football shouldn't mix' or 'Politics has nothing to do with football' are thrown around quite a lot, but the fact remains that politics and football do mix, and have always been intertwined.

This episodes picks apart some of the many ways in which politics and football interact with each other, while also talking about Francesco and Guy's experiences from podcasting.

20. Galt FC

We're joined by Galt FC owner Mark Anderton to discuss the pioneering Olympic-winning team of 1904, Canada's Galt FC. Though they were pioneers of the game in Canada, Galt are a bit of unknown quantity outside of their local area and are difficult to research despite their outstanding history.

This heritage is something that Mark has used to revive the club in the form of a community-led, affordable and accessible football team for kids to play in and develop. He has high ambitions for his Galt FC, and believes the heritage of the club gives people the identity and purpose.
