| Mercy: The Algorithm Wants Your Lunch Money | 10 Feb 2026 | 01:01:52 | |
This month on The Film Board, Pete Wright drags Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento into an emergency bonus hearing because Andy texted, essentially, “We can’t skip a month. Also I found a movie.” That movie is Mercy, a slick, noisy, deeply committed screenlife thriller where Chris Pratt wakes up strapped into a futuristic execution-chair-courtroom and has 90 minutes to prove he didn’t kill his wife. The judge is an AI who looks like Rebecca Ferguson. Which is frankly unfair to every other AI.From there, it’s a full-spoilers sprint through a world where justice is software, surveillance is just “normal life,” and every single camera on Earth is apparently pointed at exactly the wrong moment. The panel fights over what Mercy thinks it’s doing (a cautionary tale about AI and institutions) versus what it actually does (a pulpy, coincidence-powered ride that occasionally forgets its own premise and wanders off toward terrorism and explosions).Andy is… not having it. Steve is torn in the way only a lover of scrappy sci-fi concepts can be: “It’s messy, but I’m intrigued.” Tommy—who walked in expecting bargain-bin January nonsense—ends up delighted, especially after an accidental 3D screening turns the whole thing into a theme-park attraction where the chair is the main character. Pete tries to keep the court metaphor alive long enough to pronounce a verdict, but keeps getting distracted by the movie’s most dangerous idea: not the AI, but the assumption that the only way to get “justice” is if the system can see literally everything. Also: yes, we talk about the wind. The screens have wind.Watch & Discover

| Avatar: Fire and Ash • When Spectacle Outpaces Story | 13 Jan 2026 | 00:58:58 | |
This month on The Film Board, Pete Wright sits down with Tommy Metz III and Steve Sarmento to wrestle with a question that keeps resurfacing throughout Avatar: Fire and Ash: how can a movie built with such extraordinary care feel so strangely forgettable?James Cameron’s return to Pandora is, once again, a monumental technical achievement. The scale is enormous. The craft is meticulous. The effort behind it is undeniable. And yet, as the conversation unfolds, the panel keeps circling the same uneasy feeling—that the film never quite gives its spectacle anything meaningful to serve. The discussion ranges from Cameron’s latest performance-capture and adaptive frame-rate experiments to the franchise’s growing habit of mistaking motion for momentum. There’s real admiration for the artists who built this world, paired with frustration over a story that repeatedly rushes past its most interesting ideas. Themes of environmentalism, colonialism, faith, and family surface again and again, only to be flattened by familiar beats, unresolved questions, and a narrative that seems unwilling to slow down long enough to let any of them land.By the time the conversation reaches ratings, the outcome feels less like judgment and more like inevitability—the natural endpoint of trying, and failing, to locate the film’s emotional center.🎬 Watch & Discover

| The Phoenician Scheme | 10 Jun 2025 | 00:58:03 | |
Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme crash-lands into theaters with a symmetry—and we’re here to unpack the wreckage. Benicio Del Toro plays Anatole “Zsa-Zsa” Korda, a morally exhausted arms dealer who survives a plane crash and decides, rather abruptly, to become a better man. His daughter, a nun (played with unsettling calm by Mia Threapleton), may be his salvation. Or his reckoning. Or both. Along for the ride: Michael Cera as a soft-spoken entomologist, a council of multinational bureaucrats with murderous intent, and Bill Murray as God (in grayscale, naturally).Pete Wright hosts this morally ambiguous briefing with fellow operatives Tommy Metz III and Steve Sarmento, as they parse Anderson’s most spiritually ambitious and physically violent film to date. There are questions—big ones. Is this Cain and Abel by way of a TWA departure lounge? Why does forgiveness feel like a conference call?We dig into the film’s sumptuous craft, its emotional architecture, and the performances that hold it all together with linen thread and murmured apologies. If you’ve ever wanted to see a man seek redemption through dinner parties, aerial espionage, and awkward family reunions, this one’s for you.Film Sundries

| The Predator | 18 Sep 2018 | 00:58:27 | |
“The data suggests that it tracks its prey, exploits weakness. Seems to enjoy it, like a game.” The concept from Predator has been through a number of evolutions as a film and a franchise, so in this show we’ll dissect the DNA infusions brought to the bunch with the latest release. Written and Directed by Film Board favorite Shane Black, we’re excited to examine what’s new and different here as well as the appropriate level of homage to the classic-ly clever sci fi action horror hybrid.Listen to this episode and get a crazy roster of thugs: Steve Sarmento, Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Justin 'JJ' Jaeger surround and take down The Predator. Because of the long history of this movie’s lore stretching back to 1987, you may have expectations about what this movie will bring... we’ll spoil all that for you here. | The Happytime Murders | 28 Aug 2018 | 00:47:42
“Looks like someone had a real piñata party.” What the heck is going on?! The Film Board was ROFL when the trailer for The Happytime Murders was released, so we decided to take a flyer and check to see if Melissa McCarthy and the Henson Gang could keep the raunchy laughs coming. We don’t usually tackle pure comedies at The Film Board so this conversation could be a pivotal point in our movie choices for the future.Join Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Justin 'JJ' Jaeger as we consider the freedom afforded to writers when visiting vice and vulgarity upon fluffy non-living things made to look and act as though they are. We’ll help spoil the movie for you a little more than the trailer did so that we can get deep into its “rotten cotton.” And ultimately, maybe the most important question for approaching this brand of shock comedy is: where exactly can we find the line between too far and not far enough? “They’re alive. Just like me.” Volcanoes, clones, and lizards oh my! Let’s all get Jurassic with it this month as we venture back to join the forsaken children of Isla Nublar for a fifth time. The Film Board is going to erupt a bunch of spoilage on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in this episode, with intermittent narration from Jeff Goldblum. (not IRL, but surely he’ll pop up once or three times... it couldn’t fit into the franchise without it, right?)Last month we talked about the possibility of franchise fatigue with Solo, will it come into play with our thugs’ beloved ancient beasts? This Jurassic installment has some incredible competition at the box office, so join us to find out what we think will survive on silver screen island. | Beirut | 17 Apr 2018 | 01:09:47
“2000 years of revenge, vendetta, murder. Welcome to Beirut.” Last week the U.S. and its allies once again fired missiles on Syria in a response to recent chemical weapons attacks in the country. On Friday, April 13th, the film Beirut opened in theaters with a story that depicts Lebanon in the 70s and 80s running through some of the darkest times in the region’s history. Yet the world today remains saddled with war and confusion regarding how to achieve peace in the Middle East, so how does this film inform our current status? Does it enrich the conversation with historical drama or does it support an ongoing narrative of futility? The movie is rife with controversy - critics are complaining about its lack of cultural accuracy, its storytelling focusing on a white savior type of story, and its remarkable release date on the anniversary of the Lebanese Civil War. Join our group of The Film Board regulars as we try to get to the heart of the purpose in telling this story, decide where the film is meant to be in today’s entertainment industry landscape and ultimately whether you will like it or not. Tune in to this episode of The Film Board and you’ll hear Pete Wright, Tommy Metz III, Steve Sarmento, and Justin 'JJ' Jaeger all talk about what they brought home from Beirut. Film Sundries

| Ready Player One | 04 Apr 2018 | 01:11:44 | |
"It’s the only place that feels like I mean anything." Have you heard Steven Spielberg is rumored to be directing another Indiana Jones movie? It’s technically been “announced,” and the amazement that many people feel about that report after the wonder of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull seems kinda like the wary optimism that the world brought to this month’s film board subject: Spielberg’s Ready Player One. The book by Ernest Cline was hugely popular but polarizing for some and it was loaded with 1980s nostalgia set a seemingly unfilmable un-license-able virtual world. It’s very possible that Spielberg is one of the few people that could have made this a reality for the big screen. We gathered The Film Board together this month to talk about everyone’s views on Spielberg’s rehashing the of old days and adapting its wealthy pop culture landscape. Steve Sarmento, Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Justin 'JJ' Jaeger talk around the horn here about their childhood hooks, homage vs. innovation, unique artistic choices, and everybody’s favorite: fake things fighting fake things. Love or hate the rerun remake revision of your past, we’ll talk about what works about it for us and what unfortunately bites the dust. This movie boasts a whole lot of firsts on the big screen and it’s set to shatter box office records for February. Entertainment Weekly said that this is the “Marvel movie for people who don’t like Marvel movies” and that it “could change Marvel movies forever.” All the front end hype means that it’s an important film to take in and a great one to talk about. On this show, tune in to hear Steve Sarmento, Pete Wright, Tommy Metz III, and Justin 'JJ' Jaeger get deep about what it means to be a cog in the Marvel machine and what happened in this movie to make it stand out from all the others. We’ll make some connections for any confusion regarding its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and ultimately spoil the heck out of it and where things might go from here. Are you tired of superheroes who always do the right thing? Exhausted by teams that save the day and, dare we say it, have a plan? This month, The Film Board dives into Marvel’s Thunderbolts—the super squad you get when you order the Avengers from the bargain bin. Pete Wright is joined by Mandy Kaplan, Justin Jaeger, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento for a roundtable that spoils everything, celebrates Florence Pugh’s star turn, and debates whether more MCU movies should end with a hug instead of a fistfight. We dig into the surprising emotional depth, the ensemble’s knack for both grounded action and found-family pathos, and a Taskmaster controversy that set the chat ablaze. The conversation covers what works for Marvel die-hards and superhero newbies alike, why Florence Pugh and Lewis Pullman might be the new MVPs of the MCU, and how Jake Schreier’s direction finds the sweet spot between earnest and absurd. Along the way, you’ll hear our takes on trauma, group dynamics, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s master class in playing Marvel’s most maladaptive Nick Fury. This is a rare comic book movie that’s as interested in grief and group therapy as it is in punching things.Film Sundries

This week on the show, we’re gearing up to hunt some rogue Nexus 8s and save all humanity with Denis Villeneuve's take on the Ridley Scott classic, Blade Runner 2049. Is Roger Deakins so good behind the camera? It’s no secret that we’re fans of Villeneuve’s work, but we come to Blade Runner 2049 with a none-too-subtle sense of anxiety. | Sinners | 22 Apr 2025 | 01:03:59
Some stories we inherit. Some are whispered through family trees. Others are passed down through song—riffs on pain, echoes of joy, blue notes of survival. In Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, we get all three. And this month, The Film Board—Pete, Tommy, and Andy—gathers to talk about a film that bends genres, then drips them in blood and gospel and IMAX-saturated twilight. This is a vampire movie. But not really. It’s a family tragedy. And a juke joint musical. And a war story. And a funeral procession through America’s haunted South. Coogler takes us to 1930s Mississippi, hands us twin bootleggers with hearts full of grief and bravado, and a blues prodigy whose voice can wake the dead—literally. From there, Sinners unfolds like folklore remembered through firelight and whispered across generations. In this conversation, the gang goes deep:

| Demolition | 12 Apr 2016 | 01:31:21 | |
"I found this upsetting because I was very hungry and also my wife had died ten minutes earlier. Maybe I should start from the beginning." The Film Board gathers! This month the gang of thugs comes together to spoil the latest thinker from Jean-Marc Vallée, Demolition. And you know what? We like it. We like it so much, we think you should see it. If you’ve been following us on The Film Board over the last few years, you know that this sort of affinity is pretty rare around these parts. On the show, we take on Mr. Gyllenhaal, his fantastic introverted quirkiness, and his approach to addressing grief. We talk about the great Chris Cooper and his challenge at being cast as a grumpy Gus. We talk about Naomi Watts, who pulls off complexity, even if just for a wee bit of film. And finally, we talk about relative newcomer Judah Lewis in one of the best child performances we’ve seen.Better still, you have to tune in for our conversation around the production of this film. Director Jean-Marc Vallée, cinematographer Yves Bélanger, and editor Jay Glen work together to craft one of the most interesting and intentional visual narratives of the season with subtlety and grace. Think what you will about the film, but then step back and appreciate the treatment of the medium. These guys are an exceptional team on this film. Film Sundries

| Mickey 17 | 11 Mar 2025 | 01:08:47 | |
Prepare yourselves for a journey into the bewildering world of Bong Joon Ho's latest sci-fi offering. That's right—the director who brought you parasites in the basement and tentacles in the river has now delivered expendable humans on a frozen planet. In this week's utterly perplexing episode, Pete Wright gathers his gang of film-analyzing thugs to dissect "Mickey 17," a movie that asks the profound question: "What if your corporate job literally killed you repeatedly and you STILL couldn't quiet quit?"Our brave hosts—Tommy Metz III, Justin Jaeger, and the mysteriously summoned Andy Nelson (who apparently only materializes for "M" movies)—dive headfirst into this existential workplace nightmare starring Robert Pattinson as the universe's most exploited employee. The conversation spirals through multiple lanes of analysis—much like the film itself—touching on everything from identity ethics to alien sauce consumption to Mark Ruffalo's bombastic performance as what can only be described as "Poor Things, But Make It Space Napoleon."Is this a masterpiece of philosophical inquiry or a jumbled mess of unexplored concepts? Does it matter that they destroy the only machine that could save humanity? Why is there a man in a pigeon suit? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY—did any of these gentlemen actually enjoy the film?Join us for an hour of delightfully frustrated film criticism where our hosts attempt to extract meaning from what might be the most ambitious yet bewildering sci-fi release of the year. As Tommy so elegantly puts it: "I wish it wasn't so much movie."Film Sundries

| Hail, Caesar! | 10 Feb 2016 | 01:15:35 | |
“It’s complicated.” The Film Board gathers! The Coen Brothers are back, this time channeling the spirit of old Hollywood. Josh Brolin plays Eddie Mannix, the studio fixer charged with keeping the studio in fine form. His big star goes missing. His big starlet gets pregnant. His young hunk can’t act, but has the voice of an angel. And, oh yes, Commies.George Clooney plays Baird Whitlock, our kidnapped screen vet, but this film is chock full of stunt casting. Ralph Fiennes, ScarJo, Tilda Swinton (x2!), Frances McDormand, and oh yeah...if you saw the trailer, you’ve seen just about every line spoken by the good Jonah Hill. How does it all come together? Does the Coen script live up to the other films in their idiot trilogy? Does the stunt casting serve the story? How well does Roger Deakins’ camera live up to the era? And what about Carter Burwell? After a disappointing review in January’s conversation on The Finest Hours, does the score turn The Board around? All this and more this month as Steve Sarmento, Justin 'JJ' Jaeger, Andy Nelson, Pete Wright, and Tommy Metz III come together to spoil the Coen's latest, Hail, Caesar!. “The key to a happy life is to accept you are never actually in control.” The Film Board gathers! This month, we christen Jurassic World, the latest from Colin Trevorrow. Did Chris Pratt maintain his status as up-and-coming action hero of the decade? Did Bryce Dallas Howard embody 1980s sexism in the movies? Was Vincent D'Onofrio so much better in Daredevil? Is Jake Johnson your new best friend you’ve never actually met? We take on all these questions, and attempt to unpack the cultural identity of the film as a representation of the loss of control in society. Seriously. We do that. | Captain America: Brave New World | 18 Feb 2025 | 01:03:29
Is the latest Captain America film a bold step forward, or a symptom of a larger malaise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We grapple with this question, flying into Captain America: Brave New World, not just as a superhero spectacle, but as a cultural artifact reflecting our anxieties about legacy, power, and the very nature of heroism.Sam Wilson's transition from Falcon to Captain America is a referendum on what it means to inherit a symbol in a world that no longer understands symbols. Is he a worthy successor to Steve Rogers, or is he fighting a "broken system?" The answer, it seems, is as complex and multifaceted as the Vibranium shield itself. But the film's struggles extend beyond its titular hero. It is not, for example, truly a Captain America story. It is a backdoor pilot for a new era of Marvel, one where interconnected lore trumps individual narrative coherence and a legacy sequel to a 17-year-old film. And so we talk about the film's connective tissue, tracing that lineage back to The Incredible Hulk and pondering its implications for the future of the MCU.What of the villains? Is the Leader a chilling reflection of real-world anxieties about misinformation and control, or is he a pastiche of too-familiar tropes? We examine the film's political undertones, questioning whether its geopolitical machinations are a sophisticated commentary on our times or a sort-of manifestation of a collection of writers who have heard of “The West Wing.” Joining Pete Wright to unpack these thorny issues are Tommy Metz III, Steve Sarmento, Justin Jeager, and Mike Gravagno. Together, they steer through the film's strengths and weaknesses, its moments of brilliance, and its frustrating missteps, arriving at a verdict that highlights a good will toward the characters, and even the future films on the docket, in spite of a troubling outing this time.
