It's amazing what some surgeons will say to get out of performing surgery. Which is weird, because they're supposed to like performing surgery. Otherwise why become a surgeon? In this episode, Asher explores one of life's many mysteries and also does a lot of ranting. What can he say? He's autistic and he doesn't have time for lies.
4 years ago, Asher failed his final diet. More accurately, the final diet failed him. 3 years ago, he came out as transmasculine. Two years ago, he uprooted his entire life and moved to Scotland. This time last year, he realised he was neurodivergent. In may 2020, he was writing a weight loss blog. A lot has happened since then, so he figured it was high time he re-introduced himself.
According to CNN, "Rugby Olympic medallist Ilona Maher is taking on BMI and winning!" And whilst her viral video was an awesome clapback and she is doing a good job at promoting all body sizes, we're still getting it wrong when it comes to talking about BMI.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept referring to our sense of purpose. It literally translates into "a reason for living". In this episode, Asher shares his journey over the last 5 years from doctor and serial dieter to the person he is today. Find out more about Asher took his power back, and found his Ikigai.
Asher has been avoiding his doctor. Again. But that's OK, he knows he's not the only one. In this episode he makes the case for why Fat people can't help but steer clear of doctors, and how the only way to change that is to take your power back.
Asher is often asked why stress makes pain worse, or increases blood sugar, or leads to headaches/missed periods/IBS/Psoriasis flare ups. The answer is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis and Asher explains it all during this episode. Content warning: big words that don't always make sense.
I this episode, Asher teaches you how to be a doctor in just over half an hour. It's not actually that complicated. He highlights some of the issues with our current methods of practice, starting with the "presenting complaint" and going from there!
Dr Michael Mosley, a television presenter and author who popularised the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet, died at the age of 67 earlier this month. And I think there is a lot we can learn from his untimely passing.
Modern medicine is fatphobic AF. Last week I talked about how we pathologized fat. This week I will bridge the gap between history and our present reality. We'll cover the impact of: 👉Eugenics 👉Sanctimonious BS 👉Anti-fat bias 👉Capitalism 👉Bad science
We’ve been pathologizing Fat for so long that we’re no longer able to see the wood from the trees. Take a journey with me through the timeline, and you’ll soon realise it’s not at all what we think it is.
If you want to know where a person really stands, get them talking about food, sex or money. We've covered food and weight extensively on this program and last month we talked about sex. All that's left is money, and who better to have a conversation with than the amazing Ray Dodd? Asher has been working with Ray, a Money and Business coach, in a variety of different ways over the last few months. That includes being part of Ray's Plenty Community. Fancy doubling your monthly income? Then ACT NOW before doors to registration shut.
Asher talks to Lisa, creator of Mon Gros Podcast which literally translates into my BIG podcast (or FAT podcast, depending on which way you look at it). There is an entire 10 minute segment dedicated to cheese in this episode. You're welcome.
Asher has a hearing with the GMC (General Medical Council) on the 3rd June 2024, during which he will be formally resigning his membership. In this episode, Asher offers evidence that the GMC is committed to upholding white supremacy, and explains why he can no longer, in good conscience, continue to work as a Doctor in the UK.
Asher is not so much breaking up with social media as he is DTR (defining the relationship). In this episode, Asher explains the journey he has been going on since he signed up for his first Instagram account in 2020. He goes through his pros and cons list and talks about the boundaries he has had to put in place over the last few weeks and months.
Asher has come under criticism for using AI to create images that he uses on his website and social media. He is not one to use his podcast to respond to critics, but in this case he has a lot to say and he thinks it's relevant to Fat activism. This episode digs into the complex issues surrounding AI and its role in our collective future.
Today Asher is joined by Tamara Pincus, a licensed clinical social worker and AASECT certified sex therapist, with a specialty in working with kinky, polyamorous and LGBTQIA+ clients. She runs the Pincus Centre for Inclusive Treatment and Education in Washington, DC. They specialized in sex therapy and relationship counseling, as well as coaching, support groups, one-off workshops, multi-session sex and relationship classes, and accessible web resources.
Tamara and Asher discuss sex through a fat positive, trauma informed and social justice lens. In true Asher style, there was little to no preparation before he hit record so be prepared for it to get a little messy at times.
You can find all about Tamara and the Pincus Centre on the website
Asher came up with the idea for this podcast whilst recording the previous episode. So in a sense, this is a follow up. Today he talks about judgement - why we do it, when it becomes problematic, and how we can learn to stop judging ourselves and the people around us. (Ps. Asher doesn't know the answer to any of these things).
Asher was 43 years old when he found out that there are some people out there who don't care whether people like them or not! It has understandably taken him a few days to process that, and this episode explores Fat tropes and the potential reasons why Fat people are so desperate to be likeable (#NotAllFatPeople).
It's not our fault that other people lack the moral courage to challenge their own bias, listen to other POVs, or respect people who question their beliefs. It's not our fault but, as is the way of the world, we still need to learn how to deal with it. In this episode, Asher processes his experience giving a guest lecture to a group of nutrition undergraduates, one of whom was determined to make his life miserable.
Asher met Anne when they joined his online community The Weighting Room. They both realised that they had quite a bit in common and struck up a friendship. Anne (they/them) is a neurofeedback/biofeedback professional, an author, and a human trafficking consultant. They are the founder of non-profit aimed at providing trauma recovery for those who would otherwise struggle to gain access to services. You can find them on Instagram as @anne.kinsey.writes.
In this episode, Asher reads an entry from his own journal and then delves into the science of stress and trauma. Cards on the table, he is not a trauma expert but he does have a lot of lived experience with dealing with his own trauma, and supporting clients through theirs. He has been using the Wheel of Feels app for a while now.
We're all fairly familiar with what a bad doctor looks like. But what about good doctors? Does kindness equal weight inclusive. Just because they care about and respect their patients, does it mean good doctors don't have anti-fat bias? Explore these questions and more in this week's episode.
Asher has known Nicola for several years now. Among other things, Nicola is Asher's go-to expert for anything weight inclusive that is fertility related. Today Asher and Nicola discuss how they work with clients and how their AuDHD impacts their work lives. Hint: it's not a superpower but it does make them uniquely placed to support neurodiverse clients.
In honour of World Ob*sity Day, Asher talks about how are bodies aren't meant to shrink and how much easier it is to take up space once we've come to this realisation. You can learn about Asher's new course Unshrinkable here.
Following on from last week, Asher tells the GMC exactly what he thinks of them and why doctors should be focussing on tackling, prejudice, discrimination and injustice as opposed to protecting their own. You can read Asher's open letter to the GMC here.
On the 19th January, Asher received notice of a formal warning from the GMC regarding two tweets he penned in 2022. He was accused of reverse racism/transphobia/homophobia. This is the conclusion of a 2 year investigation into his social media content that has had a number of devastating effects. In this episode, Asher takes his power back from the GMC because ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. You can read Asher's open letter to the GMC here.
I recorded this episode with Bree, who goes by @justbreehonest on Instagram, in March 2023. It has taken me this long to get my act together and post it. It's a really interesting conversation between a straight sized fitness professional and a fat person who isn't generally a fan of fitness professionals. Bree is one of the exceptions! Listen in to learn what it means to be a "success story".
The question was "what happens if I have to lose weight for my health". In this case, it was joint pain. Who says they need to? What evidence do they have? What can we do when we find ourselves in similar situations? Find out in today's episode.
I spend quite a bit of time talking about the perimenopause. It turns out people don't know much about it, and most of what they have been told is nonsense. So this episode is dedicated to all the people who are tired of the night sweats and the fatigue and the brain fog. Weight loss isn't going to fix it, but you probably already knew that, didn't you?!
Never ask a doctor for nutrition advice, because most of us don't have a clue what we're talking about. And yet I managed to spend an entire episode talking about it, which shows that I have mastered the art of faking it 'til you make it. Or something like that. It's worth listening to because I make one or two valid points.
On the 7th January 2024 at 9:02pm, Asher went on LBC radio and had a massive go at Rachel Johnson, disgraced Prime Minister Boris Johnson's younger sister. Find out why and what Asher learned in the process in this episode.
In a world made up of cats and dogs, where do you stick a rhino? Don't worry if that doesn't make sense. It will by the end of the show. There is no episode description for this but don't forget to check out the Fat Joy Podcast episode on the American Academy Pediatrics guidelines for fat kids.
The other day, Cara messaged Asher to say: "I've been slowly pushing my doctor to forget that I'm fat and there as been some growth. At my last appointment she was scheduling me for an MRI and there is a mandatory weight question. She told me about it upfront, said she would not weigh me but that she needed a number to put in there. She asked me what I thought she should write, I gave her the answer, and that was that. It felt like a win. It felt like I had taught her something and that she valued the lesson." So of COURSE Asher begged Cara to come on his podcast. Who wouldn't?! You can find Cara on Instagram or through her Linktree.
I thought I was done talking about Wegovy for a while. I thought wrong. I don't imagine this will be the last time I talk about the weight loss drug that has the whole world talking, but in the meantime I am pleased to announce my upcoming Masterclass on Friday 21st April. More details can be found on my website.
In their bravest and sincerest episode yet, Asher talks about how challenging they have found the last couple of years and the cost of whistleblowing or "doing the right thing". Ultimately they find themselves facing an impossible choice. To remain silent and allow people to harm others, or to speak up and accept the violent consequences.
Episode 8 features yet another one of Asher's amazing friends (yes, they are starting to boast a little, and it is getting annoying). This time it's Ross Anderson Doherty, who is a performer, teacher and director of the Cabaret Supper Club in the heart of Belfast. You may know them from their instagram account @craicwithrossy, which is where Asher first fell in love with them. Together they share their love of Jessica Wilson's book "IT’S ALWAYS BEEN OURS: REWRITING THE HISTORY OF BLACK WOMEN'S BODIES" (as much as any two fat white non binary Wilson fans can) as well as a host of other important issues. Together Ross and Asher discuss some of the complexities of navigating the world in FAT TRANS bodies, proving that the best kind of fat has always been the trans fat (it's just got a bit of a bad reputation is all).
In this Episode Asher catches up with their Best. Friend. Kiesha (it's a private joke) in what was meant to be a review of Jessica Wilson's amazing debut book "IT’S ALWAYS BEEN OURS: REWRITING THE HISTORY OF BLACK WOMEN'S BODIES". Not quite the intellectual analysis that they had planned, this is essentially a conversation between two good friends, one of whom has to navigate the world as a Black Fat Woman. Kiesha shares her own experience of her body and adds to the already rich conversation that Wilson shares in her book.
This is an unfiltered podcast. And by that I mean I didn't have any idea what I was going to say before pressing the record button and I also didn't spend any time editing it. What you're about to listen to is the opposite of a what a podcast should be. But it does contain a lot of information from a doctor who has become somewhat of an expert on Wegovy since they read every single trial published about it. Several times over. So much so that they produced a 1hr webinar plus 32 page supplementary booklet on it. You can actually watch that webinar if you're interested.
There is a CONTENT WARNING for medical weight stigma, cancer and eating disorders. Asher follows up on their previous episode about the challenges of navigating cancer treatment as a Fat person by responding to a stigmatising video about breast cancer risk. They are joined by Cara McB, a "fat queer person on the internet" and beloved Instagrammer/Tik Toker.
Together Asher and Cara ask: 1. Does being fat cause breast cancer? 2. Does being fat increase your risk of breast cancer recurrence? 3. What are the risks of recurrence and death in fat people with breast cancer? 4. Why do doctors refuse to listen to the evidence?
More about the show:
How would you react if someone told you that most of what we are taught to believe about healthy bodies is a lie? How would you feel if that person was a medical doctor with over 20 years experience treating patients and seeing the harm caused by all this misinformation?
In series 2 of their podcast, Dr Asher Larmie, an experienced General Practitioner and self-styled Fat Doctor, talks all things related to weight stigma, fatphobia and fat liberation. They will be joined by several regular guests as well as guests from throughout the fat activism sphere.
They tackles the various ways in which these laws contribute to weight stigma and fat oppression through passionate, unfiltered conversations with guest experts, colleagues and friends. In order to really tackle weight stigma, Asher believes that you must first challenge society's definition of health, it's relationship with disease, and why fat has become public enemy number one.
Whether you're a person affected by weight stigma, a healthcare professional, a concerned parent or an ally who shares our view that people in larger bodies deserve better, Dr. Larmie and the team at 'The Fat Doctor Podcast' welcomes you into their inner circle
There is a CONTENT WARNING for medical weight stigma, cancer and medical trauma. Today Asher introduces you to Sarah-Jane, whose Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer could have been detected much earlier had a single doctor bothered to lay a hand on her abdomen. Weight stigma means fewer examinations, delayed investigations and poorer treatment and Sarah-Jane has paid the ultimate price.
You can support and follow Sarah-Jane on Instagram

There is a CONTENT WARNING for stigmatizing language, medical weight stigma and medical trauma. Giving weight loss advice to children as young as two

Doctors aren't taking Phoenix seriously. They're being told to eat less, exercise more, and lose some weight. This isn't the magical cure to all their problems. If anything, it's making them worse. Phoenix wants to go back to the way things were before, but before they can, they've got to untangle some of their health beliefs and come to terms with their current reality.
Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 3 of the Fat Doctor Podcast, or as Asher likes to think of it, the reboot. In this episode they be challenge the crazy progressive liberal snowflake stereotype. Apparently fat liberation is extremism. Or is it?
In this episode, Asher discusses:
Their own journey into fat liberation
Why basic human rights and freedom from discrimination and oppression is not radical extremism
Why BMI and "ob*sity" have no business being part of heath or healthcare
Why focusing on weight loss is a waste of breath
Thank you for listening
