Sam Royston is a London based Digital Technician (aka a digi tech), and someone I've had the pleasure of working with on a few jobs. I asked him to come on the show this week to chat all things digital technician!

He answers questions like:

- what is the essential kit all photographers need as a minimum?

- how should a digi and photographer work together?

- what hard drives should we be using?

- what even is a digital technician?!

Embodying: How to Use Seasons Theory to Transform Your Photography Career26 Jun 202400:09:17

In today’s episode, I’m diving into something that I discovered about a year ago and have been completely obsessed with ever since – Seasons Theory. This concept, which I stumbled upon on TikTok, has been a real game-changer for me, and I can’t wait to share it with you

Actionable Steps:

1. Write Your Script: Spend some time writing a detailed script for the next three months of your life, focusing on the positive aspects and goals you want to achieve.

2. Create a Mood Board: Visualize your desired life with a mood board, using tools like Pinterest or AI-generated imagery.

3. Embody Your Script: Start living your script in small ways every day, aligning your actions with the life you want to create.

I’d love to see how you’re embodying the Seasons Theory! Please share your scripts and mood boards with me via DM. Tell me what the next best version of you is going to be doing and how you’re living your TV show main character life.

Q&A Session on Pitching to Brands for Fashion Photographers11 Oct 202300:46:11

Welcome to another exciting episode of "It Starts With A Click," your trusted resource for fashion photographers striving to build a profitable, creative, and holistic business. I'm your host, Olivia Bossert, and today, we're diving into a treasure trove of questions from our followers, all about pitching to brands. I'll provide insights, strategies, and answers to help you navigate the world of pitching effectively.

Question 1: Getting Started with Brand Collaborations

Q: "I've never had the chance to create an advertising campaign or paid content for brands yet. Who should I contact to propose myself as a photographer? Who are the figures who choose the photographers to hire for their productions?"

Question 2: Crafting Persuasive Pitch Emails

Q: "How do I convince, through an email, that I am the right person to hire as a photographer?"

Question 3: Dealing with Non-Responsive Brands

Q: "How do you handle situations where brands don't respond, even when your portfolio aligns with their style? And what do you do when they don't even reply to your offers for free collaborations?"

Question 4: Local vs. Global Brand Targeting

Q: "Should I stick to brands in my area or is it realistic to target brands from different countries? Even world-wide brands?"

Question 5: Protecting Your Pitch Ideas

Q: "Ever had the problem that a client used your pitch but gave it to another photographer, who basically did the same style/location/mood? Is there a way to avoid this? How do you deal with this scenario?"

Question 6: Assessing Your Pitch-Readiness

Q: "How do I know my work is good enough for pitching?"

Question 7: Pitching Frequency and Approach

Q: "What is a good average amount of emails to send a week? Is it different for brands and magazines?"

Question 8: Breaking Into Magazine Shoots

Q: "I pitched a few shooting concepts to magazines this year, but I have a feeling that they don't take me seriously because I haven't shot for any magazine before. How can I land a shoot with a mag, if no one hires me?"

Question 9: Overcoming Initial Resistance

Q: "But no one wants even a free shoot with me, not even after a follow-up mail. How can I get some names in my brand list if they don't even want a free shoot?"

Question 10: Timing Your Pitches

How To Set Goals (And Actually Achieve Them)04 Oct 202300:25:06

Welcome to another exciting episode of "It Starts With A Click," where we unravel the secrets to building a profitable, creative, and holistic fashion photography business. I'm your host, Olivia Bossert, and today, we're delving into the art of setting goals and making them not just achievable but transformative.

The Analogy: Your Journey Without a Destination

Imagine embarking on a walk without a clear destination in mind. You wander aimlessly, and after an hour, you realize you're nowhere near where you intended to be. This scenario perfectly parallels goal setting. Without clear goals, it's like leaving your house without knowing where you want to go. The result? Frustration and disappointment when you don't arrive at your desired destination.

The Power of Setting Clear Goals

Setting clear goals is the compass that guides your journey. It's about deciding where you want to go, so you know exactly how to get there and what steps you need to take. Don't set goals "just because." Ask yourself, "Why do I want to achieve this particular goal?" Knowing your 'why' provides motivation and direction.

The Why Behind Financial Goals

When it comes to financial goals, it's insufficient to set a target amount of money. Instead, think about what that money represents. What will achieving that financial goal allow you to do? Give your money a purpose, an end goal. Money is abstract, but you can easily visualize what you would do with it.

Money with Purpose

Let's say you aim to earn £10,000. Rather than fixating on the abstract figure, visualize what that money would do for you. Perhaps it allows you to invest in new photography equipment, take a dream vacation, or contribute to a cause you're passionate about. Attach meaning to your financial goals, and you'll find the motivation and discipline to work towards them.

In this episode, we've learned that setting goals isn't just about knowing where you're going, but also understanding why you want to get there. It's about giving your goals purpose and direction, making them tangible and achievable. So, fashion photographers, it's time to set your sights high, with clear goals that will guide you on your journey to success.

This Is How You Charge More For Your Shoots20 Sep 202300:23:10

Hey there, fashion photographers! Welcome back to another episode of "It Starts With A Click," the podcast for all you creative souls out there who want to build a thriving, profitable, and holistic business. I'm Olivia Bossert, your host and founder of Olivia Bossert Education. Today, we're diving deep into the concept of delivering a "first-class" client experience and why it matters so much for your success.

What Does "First Class" Even Mean? First class in my book means providing a client experience that's simply unparalleled—the best of the best. It's about going above and beyond to create a memorable and luxurious journey for your clients.

Why Should We Focus on Delivering a First-Class Experience? When you prioritize delivering a first-class experience, magical things happen:

  • Clients keep coming back to you, becoming loyal fans.

  • Satisfied clients eagerly refer you to their friends and connections.

  • You gain the confidence to charge a premium for your services, knowing you offer unmatched value.

  • Everyone involved enjoys a more joyful experience, including yourself!

Truly believing in your services and the outstanding experience you provide makes selling your photography services seamless and authentic.

Identifying Areas for Improvement To level up your client experience, start by identifying areas that may not be "first class" yet. Take a moment to reflect on what needs improvement—what's that one thing you know you should work on?

Recognizing Your Strengths Conversely, recognize what aspects of your service are already first class. List out the things you excel at and are truly proud of in your business.

Specific Tips to Create a First-Class Shooting Experience Now, let's delve into actionable tips to make your shooting service truly first class:

  • Respond Swiftly: Always reply to emails promptly, showing your clients they matter.

  • Transparent Pricing: Use estimates to ensure your prices are clear and easy to negotiate.

  • Professional Retouching: Consider outsourcing retouching to enhance the final product quality.

  • Stunning Galleries: Share images in beautiful galleries to leave a lasting impression.

  • Capture One Live: Simplify client selection with Capture One Live.

  • Effortless Contracts: Opt for user-friendly contract software for a seamless process.

  • Efficient Bookkeeping: Utilize bookkeeping software for easy-to-pay invoices.

  • Timely Invoicing: Send invoices on time to maintain professionalism.

  • Delivery Commitment: Always deliver images within the agreed-upon timeframe.

  • Punctuality: Show up early to set, respecting your clients' time.

  • Warm Greetings: Greet everyone on set with kindness and enthusiasm.

  • Set the Mood: Play good music to create a positive atmosphere.

  • Offer Assistance: Ask how you can help during the shoot.

  • Shot Lists and Advice: Collaborate with clients on creating shot lists for a smooth process.

Conclusion: By prioritizing the client experience before, during, and after shoots, you'll witness your fashion photography business flourishing. Remember, providing a first-class experience not only benefits your clients but also empowers you to charge what you're worth with absolute confidence. So, embrace the journey of creating a memorable and luxury-filled experience for your clientele, and watch your business soar!

Planning a Portfolio Shoot in 7 Days06 Sep 202300:16:57

Welcome to another episode of "It Starts With A Click." I'm Olivia Bossert, and today, we're diving into the art of planning a portfolio shoot intentionally, even with a tight deadline. Yes you can create a stunning portfolio shoot in just 7 days.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Power of Intentional Planning: I cannot stress enough the importance of planning your shoots intentionally. When you have a clear purpose and direction, your portfolio shoot becomes a powerful tool to attract your dream clients.

  • Busting the Myth: Many photographers believe that planning a shoot is time-consuming. In this episode, I prove that a well-thought-out shoot can come together beautifully in just a week.

  • Case Study: Sparkles on Film: I share the story of one of my favorite portfolio shoots, shot on my favorite beach in Cornwall, all on film. The theme was "Sparkles," inspired by my love for sparkly garments and the idea of creating magical shots.

  • The Speedy Planning Process: Learn how I put together this portfolio shoot in record time:

    • Reached out to a model, Isabella, who was available for a shoot on a specific date.

    • Created a mood board centered around the concept of "sparkles."

    • Styled the shoot myself, opting for a simple theme that made clothing selection easy.

    • Purchased and returned all the clothing from H&M and Zara, keeping it a personal portfolio project.

    • Arranged for hair and makeup by my friend, Georgie.

    • Planned the shot list, envisioning the poses I wanted Isabella to do.

    • Prepared all necessary equipment, including ordering extra film.

    • Considered weather conditions, like the windy weather that influenced the hairstyle.

    • Enlisted the help of a best friend as an assistant for the shoot.

  • The Three Goals of the Shoot: Understand the intentions behind the portfolio shoot:

    • Enjoy the process, bask in the beautiful weather, and create something wonderful with friends.

    • Continuously explore the concept of sparkles as a long-term project.

    • Showcase Cornwall's beauty and creative potential, proving that remarkable work can be produced within the UK.

  • The Power of Simplicity: Embrace the simplicity of your shoot, as it doesn't make it any less impactful. Stay true to your goals and have fun experimenting and playing with your art.

  • Your Intentional Shoot: Remember, you can achieve your portfolio shoot in a short time frame, just like I did. Stay intentional, know the purpose of your shoot, and let your creativity flow.

Conclusion: Planning a portfolio shoot in 7 days is absolutely doable when you approach it with intention and purpose. By following a streamlined process and understanding your shoot's goals, you'll create a captivating portfolio that aligns with your vision and attracts your ideal clients.

Standing Out: Embracing Unique Approaches as a Fashion Photographer09 Aug 202300:27:54

In this exciting episode of "It Starts With A Click," I delve into the unique choices and practices that set me apart as a fashion photographer. Join me as I share how embracing my individuality has allowed me to build a fulfilling and unconventional career. Discover why I choose not to worry about Instagram followers, forgo having an agent, shoot consistently every week, thrive outside of a big city, indulge my love for travel, and diversify my income sources beyond photography.

In a world where social media often dictates success, I challenge the traditional notion of focusing on Instagram followers. Instead, I prioritize pitching, and putting my efforts into other, more useful forms of marketing. I'll reveal the strategies I use to grow genuine relationships with clients who truly appreciate my work.

While many fashion photographers seek representation through an agent, I'll explain why I've chosen to navigate my career independently. I'll discuss the benefits of maintaining creative control and how taking the reins has allowed me to shape my brand and pursue projects that align with my vision, whilst protecting my time and space.

Contrary to the trend of gravitating towards big cities, I'll shed light on the advantages of living outside the bustling urban centres. My experiences will demonstrate how being in the countryside has not hindered my growth as a fashion photographer, but rather offered unique opportunities and a more balanced lifestyle.

Travel is something I enjoy, but contrary to most photographers, is not what I desire for my business. I discuss why I’m not interested in travelling for work.

Furthermore, I'll address the misconception that photography must be the sole income stream for a fashion photographer. By diversifying my revenue sources, I've built a sustainable and stable business.

Join me on this episode as I challenge conventional norms and offer a fresh perspective on thriving as a fashion photographer by embracing authenticity, independence, consistency, and a diverse approach to income.

Key Takeaways:

  • Embracing Authenticity Over Instagram Followers: I prioritize meaningful content and genuine connections with my audience, rather than obsessing over follower counts.

  • Independence Over Agent Representation: I choose to navigate my career independently, maintaining creative control and shaping my brand on my terms.

  • Consistency in Shooting: Committing to shooting intentionally, rather than as much as possible.

  • Flourishing Outside the Big City: I reveal the advantages of living in the countryside, which has provided unique opportunities and a more balanced lifestyle.

  • Staying at Home: I share why travelling for work is not for me, and how I’ve come to that decision.

  • Diversifying Income Sources: Beyond photography, I incorporate education, collaborations, and other ventures to create a stable and resilient business.

How Estimates Changed My Photography Career12 Jun 202400:10:46

In this episode of The Fashion Photography Show, I'm sharing the ultimate game changer that revolutionized my financial dealings as a fashion photographer: estimates. I'll dive into why using estimates transformed my career, how they facilitate clear communication with clients, and provide practical steps for incorporating them into your business.

  • Introduction to Estimates:

    • Discover why estimates are essential for financial success and client negotiations.
    • Learn about my personal journey and how starting to use estimates in 2020 changed my career.
  • What is an Estimate?:

    • Understand what an estimate is: a detailed quote that breaks down the costs of a shoot, similar to an invoice but without requesting payment upfront.
    • Key components include day rates, creative fees, usage fees, costs of assistants, equipment, studio hire, retouching, and travel.
  • Benefits of Using Estimates:

    • Clarity for Clients: Breaking down costs helps clients understand where their money is going, making it easier for them to accept your fees.
    • Facilitates Negotiation: Allows for clear and visual negotiation without compromising your income. Adjust specific items instead of reducing your rates.
    • Transparency and Avoiding Misunderstandings: Clear estimates avoid awkward conversations and ensure both parties are on the same page.
  • Practical Steps to Implement Estimates:

    • Creating a Sustainable Business Model: Set prices that reflect your value and cover all costs.
    • Adjusting Rates: Regularly review and adjust your pricing as you grow.
    • Using My Free Estimate Template: Download my free template, which includes Excel, Numbers, and Word document options. It’s easy to use and will do the math for you.
  • Resources:

    • I’m offering a free estimate template available through the podcast link, along with bonus training on how to use it effectively.
    • Signing up for the template also adds you to the waitlist for my upcoming online course, Profitable Fashion Photographer, launching in July.
  • If you found this episode helpful, please share it with someone who might benefit from it.
  • I’d love to hear your thoughts and questions. DM me on Instagram or send an email.

4. Why Building Your Fashion Photography Career Will Take A Long Time29 Jul 202000:12:51
This episode is a bit different, but I really wanted to chat about this topic, because I feel like I speak to so many photographers who feel like things are taking too long, or that they're not progressing fast enough, or they're never going to make it because they've been working hard for 6 months and seeing no results. The truth is that this career is a long term game. It takes time, and you need to willing to put in the work day after day, year after year.  Listen in to find out why.
