Season 2 Episode 010 - Sell Out TikTok Launches with Katie @ Katharina Lou12 Dec 202300:47:57

Welcome to another episode of The Fashion Brand Clinic with me, Elizabeth Stiles!

KT Mildren launched ‘Katharina Lou,’ her fashion business in 2021 after having lots of spare time (& creative ideas!) in lockdown.

Since then she has grown a cool community online of fashion followers and has also become best known for her hit Olly Rose dress!

Starting with bold feminine pink pieces which were all made to order, since then it has evolved into a more grungy aesthetic.

KT shares her tips for pivoting, creating sell out launches, how to find the right influencers for your brand and how to get out of a negative cycle which so many founders face.

In this episode we discuss :

  • The 80/20 rule: 80% of your sales will come from 20% of your products so ‘If it’s ain’t broke, then don’t fix it.’ If you have a best seller, relaunch it in different colour ways and styles, don’t try to always reinvent the wheel.

  • The importance of going to see your manufacturers in person: you get things done quicker, you can build relationships, you can check that they fit in with your values and they are likely to work harder for you after you’ve made the effort to come and see them.

  • The power of taking a break and space from your business: sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pausing and taking a holiday to reignite the creativity in you and help you get out of a negative cycle.

043 - Building A New Brand With Your Best Friend with @shopfleuri26 Aug 202000:52:53

Hilary & Kirsten reached out to me on instagram to come on the podcast & wanted to discuss building a new brand with your best friend which really caught my attention!

Fleuri was born in the heart of Los Angeles by Hilary & Kirsten who worked together at the same fashion company. One had a knack for business while the other was skilled in design, but their shared passion was collecting timeless jewellery pieces.

They spent hours each week after work in the jewellery district of L.A., asking for advice, researching gems, and trying not to feel intimidated by the giant man-run jewellery companies that seemed to be the only successful operations in the area. While both struggling to pay rent in the expensive city and living pay check to paycheck, they thought of the women before them that had taken an ounce of courage and turned it into a triumph. With only $200 in hand, they jumped head first into creating Fleuri.

Fleuri’s pieces are not meant to be trendy or temporary. Kirsten and Hilary wanted to make jewellery pieces that could be heirlooms for years to come. Each piece is made by hand, using locally sourced materials to create the pieces they had always dreamt of. They name each piece after a historic woman that has inspired them to follow their ambitions and take a leap of faith.

In this episode we discuss :

  • How Hilary & Kirsten met (it’s a funny story!)

  • The story of how they both left their jobs in fashion to start a brand

  • Running a business when they now live 16 hours away from each other

  • The experiences they encountered starting in a male dominated experience

  • How BLM & Covid have affected their business

  • Where they take inspiration from & what they have planned for the future!

BTW you can hear Hilary’s dog at the beginning as she has a cone on but we fix it after a couple of mins!

042 - Creating Window Displays With Katie Brew19 Aug 202000:59:01

Katie and I went to uni together to study fashion retail buying but our careers have gone in different directions! I thought it would be fun to speak to Katie and share her story about how she left buying and transferred to a completely different role! Katie is actually living in Germany at the moment as she works for a large retailer out there (we can’t name it otherwise she has to fill in loads of boring paperwork and tbh she cba!) haha!

Her stories that she shares in this episode are so honest & I’m super grateful to her for that! I know that whenever she says ‘for example’ that its actually something that she’s had to do for a wacky boss or client!

In this episode we discuss :

  • How Katie moved out of the buying industry due to not enjoying it

  • The resilience needed to get into an industry you know nothing about

  • The crazy projects she’s been asked to work on for brands such as Harrods, Selfridges, Dior & Nike (to name a few!)

  • The skills needed to work in a job that has so many moving parts

  • What the process is to go from an idea to an installation

  • What a critical path is & why it’s the key to success

040 - Elizabeth Stiles - So You Want To Start A Fashion Label?29 Jul 202000:15:12

This solo episode is me reading my article that was featured in The Delicate Rebellion magazine! I was incredibly excited when Hannah asked me to write this in my natural tone of voice and keeping it light hearted!

The Delicate Rebellion is a beautiful print publication to challenge the mainstream media's portrayal of women and to bring your peepers back from screen to print.

Last year, Hannah launched The Collective, an online community that pairs the wild ones featured in the mag with the readers to provide a community with the added benefits of mentorship, online workshops, support and encouragement.

With collaboration at the heart of everything, she also runs workshops and meet-ups across the UK to bring the community together for real life hangs, because there's more to life than social media #PRAISEBE.

This episode of the podcast is slightly different to the rest of them - it’s the first one I’ve ever recorded with the addition of alcohol for one! But also Emma is one of my closest friends and we speak every hour of the day about food, cats, instagram & money!

Emma is the creator of Beau Tie, a luxury men’s accessories brand that started back in 2012, born from a love of fabrics, and men’s style. After 9 months of working on it around her job, I took the plunge to take it on full time. Her brand mission is to provide luxury and carefully crafted accessories that will be well-loved, and re worn time and time again. She loves to create a range of products to help you express your individuality, whether that be through day to day style, smart occasions or on your wedding day. She tries to encourage a greener approach to business by using vintage and reclaimed fabrics when possible, as well as sourcing from small independent fabric shops too. Her products are particularly popular in America and she’s sold a product to every state in the USA!

  • you’re holding yourself back from speaking up or sharing what you do because of fear of what other people will think and you know it’s time to break the cycle

  • you’re DONE with not making the money you want because you know deep down you don’t feel you ‘can’

  • you’re exhausted by all the noise online and want to stay in your own lane and believe in yourself with everything you’ve got

036 - "humanity is always on brand" with Rhea Cartwright04 Jun 202000:59:30

It took me circa 4 seconds to know who I wanted to discuss the topic of social injustice with on the podcast - Rhea Cartwright

Rhea & I met last year for a 1-1 session making a plan on how she was going to leave her 9-5 … fast forward a year and she’s writing for publications such as Refinery29 & Dazed - how inspiring!

Rhea was so kind to make herself available at short notice to discuss the topic in detail; she shares her views on how the fashion industry has reacted to the death of George Floyd and the topic of racism which has been an issue in the industry for years.

In this episode we discuss :

  • How Rhea called out online publications to address the current situation

  • Which brands have done well and who’s missed the mark

  • Why it’s no longer acceptable for brands to remain neutral at times like this

  • The difference between tokenism and authentic action

  • Advice for brands going forward on how they can contribute to change

Therefore to reach those ‘scary’ places in life, you have to go against that primal instinct in order to succeed

025 - The Box London - Extending the Life of Designer Clothes25 Mar 202000:35:32

The BOX is a multifaceted sample sale space located in the heart of Hackney & is designed to accommodate and support a range of retail events; from its’ signature sample sales to pop-ups and product launches.

The Founder and Director is Natalie Yaffe, who came up with the concept having been an avid sample sale shopper herself. The idea was born out of a frustration that sample sales weren’t enjoyable experiences; evoking ideas of unwanted product, bad merchandising and frantically rummaging through boxes or rifling through rails.

Yaffe saw a gap in the market for a premium space, to shop the best brands at affordable prices, whilst feeling like a full price boutique. With a fashion and retail background, having previously worked at Mr Porter as well as the in-house sample sales team at the Net-A-Porter Group, Yaffe started planning a space that would combine a carefully curated edit of product from only the best brands.

From the music played to the lighting used she has created a relaxed and enjoyable customer experience.

The BOX are not only providing a more comfortable experience for the sample sale shopper but also striving to offer an alternative to fast fashion. The aim is to give people the opportunity to buy from designers who produce the highest quality, most covetable pieces that will last; and all at a similar price point to fast fashion brands on the high street. It's a responsibility to the planet, whilst also giving those who don't want to or can't pay designer prices the opportunity to buy into premium product.

In this episode we discuss :

  • Natalie’s experience in the fashion industry

  • How she’s changed the face of sample sales

  • Which brands Natalie works with

  • What happens to the stock if it isn’t sold at sample sales

  • The teething problems she faced when setting up

  • Advice for people who want to grab a bargain!

  • Tips on working in the fashion industry & how to get ahead

021 - Sewing from Scratch With New Craft House12 Feb 202000:34:18

Hannah and Rosie popped up on my insta feed via a post that Heart Zeena shared about DIY sewing & I loved that New Craft House was making sewing cool & accessible to everyone!

Friends since school, they’ve always been obsessed with crafting (girls after my own heart & I had to go to Hobbycraft straight after we met as I felt so inspired!)

After having a successful blog & also struggling to find fresh and exciting craft products they set up The New Craft House in 2013. Using traditional crafting techniques in modern and stylish products, their range of kits and workshops inspire everyone to be creative.

They run workshops from the studio on Broadway Market, East London with Hannah’s beautiful dog who was napping behind us whilst recording!

We lost the first recording after 10 minutes but they were so patient with my crappy laptop & were happy to start again from the beginning - thankyou!

In this episode we discuss :

  • How to get into sewing if you’re a complete novice

  • What the New Craft House workshops look like

  • Why they started buying ex - design fabrics to sell on their website

  • Common starter sewing mistakes to avoid!

  • Hannah & Rosie’s favourite things to make (they sew using solar energy on their house boats!)

  • Inspiring craft accounts to follow on Instagram (all listed below!)

018 - Finding a Factory for Your Fashion Brand with Heather Williams @ Sourcing Playground18 Dec 201900:52:12

I met Heather through LinkedIn and couldn’t believe what an incredible platform she’d created with Sourcing Playground.

Having been a buyer herself, she knew there was a problem in the industry through connecting manufacturers to retailers and vice versa. After spending a fortune on travel going to different sourcing shows around the world, she thought ‘why is this not online’ ?!

With Sourcing Playground, she has flipped the traditional model on it’s head so that the retailer uploads a project and the manufacturers effectively bid for your business - it’s like match.com but for factories and retailers!

Heather is also the sponsor of the podcast so it totally made sense for her to be guest of honour and share her wonderful knowledge of the sourcing industry & how to work best with manufacturers!

In this episode we discuss :

  • Heather’s career history to date

  • Why she launched Sourcing Playground & how you can use it

  • Best practises when working with a factory

  • The huge topic of sustainability!

The podcast will be taking a short break over Christmas and New Year but will be back in January 2020!

017 - Lauretta Roberts @theindustry.fashion on Thriving in the Fashion Industry05 Dec 201900:41:12

Last year I wrote on my dream guest list that I wanted to record an episode with someone from WGSN or Drapers. Then I went to speak at Fashion SVP which is a trade show to meet manufacturers from all around the world. I saw a stand called TheIndustry.Fashion and met the founder Lauretta Roberts

She was telling me about her experience and funnily enough she was the former editor of Drapers & director of WGSN - you can imagine my eyes lit up by this point! I followed up with Lauretta and asked if she wanted to be a guest on the podcast and she very kindly offered her time to record this episode

TheIndustry.fashion is a brand new intelligence-led media & events business targeting fashion industry professionals & their aim is to provide a new generation insights, intelligence and events business for the new generation of fashion business. The business was founded by Lauretta Roberts and Antony Hawman, a former director of Birchbox and My-wardrobe.com and a publishing manager of Drapers.

In this episode we discuss :

  • making fashion intelligence & data accessible to the creative industry

  • pitching for investment & what they look for

  • why being kind can take you a long way in your career path

  • the lessons Lauretta learnt from her previous roles at Drapers & WGSN

131 - The Easy Way to get PR for Your Brand with Nicola @ Press Loft21 Jul 202200:37:49

Today I’m joined by Nicola @ Press Loft! It’s the largest online PR tool that connects brands, PR and Digital Marketing agencies with journalists, bloggers and social influencers.

Back in 2006 Nicola needed a system to manage her clients' images for her PR Agency! Hosting images, influencer info & press releases all in one place allows journalists to access everything they need to feature a brand in an instant and as a result increases their press coverage results significantly.

I often struggle when people ask me about PR because it’s so time consuming & overwhelming that unless it’s a main focus for you can often provide little to no results. However with a tool like this, you can pretty much automate the process by uploading everything to Press Loft and then wait for the notifications to start pinging!

I have a really fun quiz for you to try out today!  It's just 21 questions that will determine a score from 0-100 and you'll automatically receive a personalised audit of how your business is doing.

In this episode we discuss :

  • The key differences between press and marketing as a whole

  • How Nicola launched Press Loft whilst on an unusual career path

  • Why press can be so useful for a small business to be found by a new audience

014 - Lucy Hitchcock @ Sassy Digital on How to Launch a Fashion Brand With a Small Audience24 Oct 201900:52:44

Episode 14 of The Fashion Feed podcast is with Lucy Hitchcock of Sassy Digital. I met Lucy in a networking group called The Coven where I saw she’d launched her podcast ‘Winging It’ which is great!

She runs Sassy Digital which is a marketing ‘agency’ designed to be an extension of your team, and one of their strengths from the beginning has been fitting seamlessly into client’s businesses.

Sassy Digital has been managing social media accounts, building brands and websites since 2014 and in that time they’ve worked with plenty of talented people and extraordinary brands.

Lucy has built the websites for some big players such as Sarah Ashcroft’s SLA label and Stay Wild Swim so has since accrued a number of up and coming fashion brands as clients!

It’s great having a big audience to sell to but I wanted to speak to her about how to launch a fashion brand with a relatively small following.

I went to meet Lucy at a co-working space where we recorded an episode for her podcast followed by me interviewing her for The Fashion Feed which was her first ever podcast interview as a guest! I’m sure you’ll agree that she was a natural & gave away so much advice for new brands

In this episode we discuss :

  • which social platforms should be your priority when launching

  • how to grow your audience on and offline

  • the importance of community when starting out with something new

  • how facebook groups can help ease anxiety around business hurdles

  • which web platform is best for you as a fashion brand

  • tips on how to write blogs for good SEO purposes

  • how to break the formatting on Mailchimp & design emails that are on - brand

012 - The Emotional Rollercoaster of Owning a Fashion Brand with Caro Gomez25 Sep 201900:58:02

Originally from El Salvador, Caro now lives in London and I met her in a facebook group when we were prompted to say what our skills were & if they’d be beneficial to anyone else in the group

I needed advice on email marketing and Caro wanted to speak to someone in the fashion industry for advice on launching a fashion brand - funnily enough she became my first ever client!

After realising we were both based in North London, we’d meet by Camden Lock to help each other out but it quickly formed a friendship that was way past a simple skill swap

I wanted Caro on the podcast because people always ask me ‘how do you ACTUALLY start a fashion brand?’

Caro is coming up to her first year and I knew she’d be really honest and articulate in what those first days of starting a brand look like! She also has the most amount of fire and passion when explaining her brand which is incredibly infectious and inspiring - I know it will give you goosebumps!

In this episode we discuss :

  • how to embrace your creativity despite other people’s opinions

  • all the doubtful feelings that appear when you’re launching a fashion brand

  • practical exercises to try so you can get your ideas out of your head

  • her purpose with the brand & working towards something bigger than yourself

  • Caro’s passion for supporting Latin American women and how she helps the community

  • how the brand has healed some demons from her past

  • how to name your brand and what feelings arise when naming it after yourself

My guest on The Fashion Feed this week is Joanne Griffin, graphic designer & product development consultant.

Joanne and I met over instagram and realised very quickly that we actually only lived about 20 minutes from each other. After speaking on DM’s for a couple of months, we took the plunge and went on a friend date! We really hit it off as we have so much in common speaking about design & trends, yoga, books we’ve read, the transition into freelance life and so much more I can’t really remember it now!

06 - Lucy & Yak on building a community driven fashion brand05 Jun 201901:09:10

My guest on the sixth episode of the fashion feed podcast is Lucy Greenwood who’s the co founder of Lucy and Yak with her partner Chris.  Lucy & Yak is an ethical clothing and lifestyle business famous for their super comfy dungarees!

They met at a car garage in the sales department which they’ve since found out has some surprisingly transferable skills in fashion! They took off travelling around the world in their van ‘Yak’ and we discuss their adventures turning the brand into what it is today!

I came across Lucy and Yak after a client of mine mentioned how inspiring they were and I became intrigued!

I reached out to them to ask if they needed any support with upcoming projects and the rest is history

I work with Lucy and Chris twice a month reviewing their sales, growing new areas of the business & forecasting trends; it’s a really exciting time to be a part of their business & I know you’ll love listening to this episode as Lucy is so down to earth and funny!

In this episode we cover :

  • The full back story of how Lucy and Yak was born

  • How they work with their suppliers and manage those relationships

  • Our thoughts on how we foresee the future of the fashion industry

  • Lucy shares where the brand is going from here and the exciting plan in place

05 - The Differences Between Ethical and Sustainable Fashion with Meg Pirie21 May 201900:42:11

My fifth guest on The Fashion Feed podcast is Meg Pirie

Meg runs a slow fashion advocacy business; she’s an eco conscious stylist, writer, designer & workshop leader in Wales.

After having worked for Gucci and giving birth to her daughter India, her outlook on the fashion industry completely changed… for the better!

We found each other on Instagram as we both talk about slow fashion regularly & I shared an image from ink thimble which Meg loved and we got chatting! She’s the perfect guest to have on the podcast because she’s worked in lots of different areas of the fashion industry & also pushing it in a brand new directionMeg Pirie

In this episode we break down a lot of jargon that’s being thrown about including :

  • the differences between linear fashion & circular fashion

  • the differences between ethical fashion & sustainable fashion

  • the differences between eco - fashion & vegan fashion

We also cover :

  • is sustainable fashion for the wealthy?

  • projects that Meg is working on from clothes swap parties & mending workshops

  • animal cruelty in the fashion industry

  • why 2019 is going to be the year of water preservation

  • exciting new fabrics being developed that are kind to the planet

(Just a note to say we do discuss some details of animal cruelty within this episode if you’re sensitive to the topic)

04 - Amy Fuchsia on growing an engaged fashion community on instagram08 May 201900:53:16

My fourth guest on The Fashion Feed podcast is Amy Fuchsia of Fuchsia Shaw

Amy Fuchsia is the ultimate definition of a ‘multi - hyphenate’ - she’s a fashion influencer, stylist, content creator and designer for her own brand Fuchsia Shaw. Her career started in costume design and on- set styling but it didn’t fulfil her creative drive so she slowly transitioned into creating her own designs on swimwear.

After having one of her swimsuits accidentally go viral on Pinterest, she noticed the power of social media and started to grow her own Instagram account sharing outfit posts that her mum had taken of her

At a first glance on Amy’s Instagram feed you may not realise she’s quite shy so I was extra grateful when she agreed to come on the podcast & tell her story! I admire her because she pushes through her insecurities, works hard & puts herself out there to create her own opportunities which have really paid off!

I first came across Amy as she’d done some influencer work for a brand I was working with at the time. I’m now a fashion brand consultant & work with brands on their design, sourcing, manufacturing & marketing. After noticing she had her own brand, I reached out to Amy in September 2018 to see if she wanted to have a chat about Fuchsia Shaw & how I might be able to help.

I remember being SO excited when she replied & since then, we’ve worked together on trend forecasting, inspiration shopping & a launch plan for her AW 18 collection. We visited a knitwear factory in Leicester & also did a fabric sourcing trip in Paris (not quite as glam as it sounds… we met at St Pancras station at 5 am and got home at 10 pm the same day!)

Amy came over to my house to record the podcast and my cat Vinnie was sat in the corner listening to the whole interview. She was wearing dad jeans, a grey sweatshirt an oversized black denim jacket, white sports socks and chunky trainers (I looked a mess as usual!)

In this episode we cover :

  • How to grow your account by creating content & telling stories that resonate with your audience

  • An honest account of her struggles with manufacturing & how she overcame them

  • How she sold out her first bag collection in 15 minutes

  • Her insecurities about the brand & how it’s perceived

  • How to create a manageable collection within your capabilities

  • Trends we’re excited to see launch in 2019

03 - Improve the Cashflow in Your Fashion Business with Catherine Erdly25 Apr 201900:42:24

My third guest on The Fashion Feed podcast is Catherine Erdly of Future Retail

She has over 19 years experience working with product businesses of all sizes from high street names (such as Laura Ashley, Coast and Paperchase), all the way down to brand new businesses with just a handful of customers.

Catherine is your go - to woman if you want to get more organised and make more money.

I first met Catherine in the spring of 2018 and it seemed like fate that our paths had crossed! Catherine previously worked as a merchandiser and I was in buying which are complimentary jobs in retail. Merchandisers work very closely with buyers to give them a budget to spend and a framework of how to spend it and this is similar to what Catherine does now with her clients.

Since our first meeting we have worked on a number of projects together and often pass client recommendations depending on the specific knowledge they need advice on. I focus on design trends & manufacturing whereas Catherine focuses more on time management and cash flow.

I knew I wanted Catherine on the podcast because she has so much knowledge to share and breaks down the topic of money into manageable and actionable advice so you can implement it into your own brand strategy with confidence.

We decided to meet in The British Library thinking it would be quiet but no such luck, there’s a lot of plate rattling and coffee making so apologies for the background noise, I’ve reduced it as much as I can

In this episode we cover :

  • How to make more money within your fashion business

  • The one number you need to know to ensure your business is a financial success

  • Minimising risk with your cash flow

  • The one and only place where money comes into your business - do you know what it is?

  • How to spot trends within your sales and using that information to determine future decisions

Catherine and I also discuss the workshops that we run together with Joanne Griffin and if you’d like to come along on 18th May 2019, you can grab a ticket here!

We're also running it in September and the link to buy tickets is here

Spaces are limited & both workshops have sold out previously so I’d recommend booking in soon!
