| Restoring "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" | 27 Mar 2022 | 01:11:43 | |
Dave Strohmaier, Director of Film Restorations for Cinerama, and his collaborator Tom March provide a detailed background on the epic restoration of the 1962 Cinerama classic. And the Warner Archives’ George Feltenstein details the history behind the release and the two-disk special edition blu-ray filled with extras. We start with a review of how Dave’s interest in restoring the Cinerama films led to his first meetings with Warner Home Video, including George Feltenstein, to discuss “How the West Was Won.” This film was found to be in relatively good shape leading to a fairly easy restoration. The re-release of the restored film was hugely successful in both its Cinerama screenings in 2008 and in the Home Video editions. However, previous reviews of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” film assets stated that they were so badly damaged that it was basically an “un-restorable” film. But advances in digital film restoration, combined with Dave’s work on the technically challenging WINDJAMMER restoration, gave him the confidence to explore the film once again. Starting with meetings in 2018, Dave and George recount the milestones in the collaboration between Cinerama and Warner Bros. And then Dave and Tom explain some of the specific restoration challenges they faced in their epic year-and-a-half spent on the project. | Cars, Guitars, and a 1967 Chevy Impala Named “Baby" | 23 Feb 2022 | 00:53:27
Hollywood has a rich legacy of memorable picture cars. And one of the most beloved on television in the last decade is “Baby,” the midnight black 1967 Chevy Impala made famous by the Winchester Brothers - Sam and Dean, in the hit TV show "Supernatural." For 15 seasons, Jeff Budnick was the Picture Car Coordinator for "Supernatural," and his job was to ensure “Baby” and all of the other cars on the show were ready when needed. In this episode, Jeff takes us through the chance meeting that launched his career on "X-Files," where he had the good fortune to work with highly regarded TV director Kim Manners. Once X-Files ended, Jeff transitioned to the show "Supernatural," beginning with the very first episode. Jeff describes the Impalas that he received from the pilot filming, and how he added to the various show cars over the years. He shares stories from the hectic first season, including his favorite episode, “Route 666.” And he explains what the P.O.S cars are, and details some of them used in the series. Jeff shares personal stories of the crew, how they formed a band called “The Impalas,” and what he has been doing during the time TV production was shut down due to the pandemic. We also go through the challenges in filming the episode "Baby," where the whole episode was filmed from the POV of the car. Jeff then tells us stories of Jensen Ackles's affection for the car, and why he received "Hero car #1." And Jeff explains where the other "Hero" cars ended up. He recounts some of the fan cars used in episodes and events. And in an emotional send-off, Jeff details taking the cars he worked with for 15 seasons to the tractor-trailer for their final journey to the end of the road. Filmmaker Constantine Nasr of Rivendell Films joins the podcast to discuss the extras for several classic Horror films. In December of 2020, the Warner Archive released “The Curse of Frankenstein,” so we review the extras Constantine Nasr created for the special 2-disc release. | Superman: Timeless Icon Extra | 28 Oct 2021 | 00:51:50
We celebrate the 25th Anniversary release of "Superman: The Animated Series" for the first time on Blu-ray with a discussion with filmmaker Alex Gray about his exclusive special feature extra created for the release. Alex details for us the challenges posed by the pandemic, and how he re-worked his original creative concepts to accommodate the remote interview restrictions. His pivot to audio interviews with the producers and cast was warmly received and proved to be a brilliant antidote to the pandemic restrictions that led to even more personal stories and remembrances. Alex then worked with the Warner Bros Animation archivist to unearth never-before-used storyboards, character models, and other artwork to blend with the interviews. Personal photos provided by the cast and publicist Gary Miereanu rounded out the visuals. The final touch was an analog score and an audio mix that punctuated the multi-layered final film. This exceptionally creative extra is the capstone to an arguably must-have new Blu-ray box set for all “Superman: The Animated Series” fans. | Whacky Adventures in Curating Looney Tunes Cartoons | 07 Oct 2021 | 00:45:15
“Here’s what I do.” Legendary animation historian Jerry Beck is back for part two of a multi-episode discussion on Looney Tunes. In this episode, we dive into a fun-filled review of Jerry’s fascinating career curating Looney Tunes titles. He explains the genius he has in hunting and finding and cataloging old cartoons (like all genius, it is actually unexplainable). We try and puzzle out when he and legendary Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein first started curating the Looney Tunes catalog, with little success. But we pick up with the 1996 merger of Warner Bros and Turner, which brought all of the Looney Tunes cartoons from the MGM library back under the WB banner. That allowed Jerry to work with Columbia House for their VHS Looney Toons compilations in the late 1990’s. That research was useful when he began his curation with George Feltenstein on the fan-favorite Looney Tunes Golden Collection, which was an immediate commercial success. That led to five more volumes and then the Blu-ray releases on the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection. Along the way we make a side journey to a military base for some film research, discuss the value live theatrical screenings have had on Jerry’s instincts for interesting cartoon curation, and learn about Jerry’s passion project (you have to listen to find out). | The Origins of Warner Archive with George Feltenstein | 05 Oct 2021 | 01:07:57
Legendary Home Entertainment executive George Feltenstein returns to the show to talk about the early days of the Warner Archive. In this episode, George takes us back to his work with Rhino Handmade on small-scale, but profitable soundtrack releases on CD during the late 1990’s. That led to a fateful meeting in 2002 with fellow Warner Bros executive Jim Wuthrich, who was determined to find a way to execute the same concept on the deep Warner Bros film library. That led Mr. Wuthrich to DVD made-on-demand technology, which by 2007 was robust enough that the Warner management team approved the development and launch of a direct-to-consumer service. George’s task was to curate the 100 film releases that would launch the service, a task that grew ever greater when the number was expanded to 150 films soon before launch. On March 23, 2009, The Warner Archive Collection premiered with 150 film titles, to immediate success. George Feltenstein then takes us through a review of the Warner Archive October 2021 release slate.
