Do as I Say, Not as I Do: The Style Advice I Give, but Don't Follow06 Feb 202500:24:43

Today, I'm pulling back the curtain to share something I've been thinking about a lot lately - which pieces of my own style advice I actually follow, and which ones I don't.

As someone who gives a lot of guidance about building a better wardrobe, I think it's important to be transparent about how I apply these principles in my own life. More importantly, I want to share why sometimes breaking the "rules" makes sense, even when the advice itself is solid.

Here's what I shared in this episode:

  • Why I don't strictly follow a capsule wardrobe approach, even though I create and sell capsule guides - and how this actually makes me better at developing versatile collections that work for different women's needs and styles.
  • The truth about my "no multiples" rule and when I break it.
  • How I navigate shopping in February and August (months I typically tell others to avoid), and the specific criteria I use to decide if an off-season purchase is worth it.
  • The complex relationship I have with "dressing for your body shape" guidelines, and why following them too strictly can actually hinder your style journey.

I hope this episode helps you understand that style advice isn't one-size-fits-all, and that even experts need to adapt guidelines to fit their real lives. The key is to understand the principles behind the advice, and then thoughtfully adapt them to your unique situation, lifestyle, and preferences.

What matters most isn't following every guideline perfectly, but creating a wardrobe that helps you live your big, rich, full life with confidence and joy.

10 Ways to Boost Your Style in Under 10 Minutes23 Jan 202500:22:44

Is there ever a morning when you feel like you just don't have time to look put together? As a wardrobe stylist who's worked with thousands of women, I know that mornings can be hectic, and style often takes a backseat to just getting out the door. But what if I told you that you could elevate your style game in less than 10 minutes?

In this episode, I'm sharing 10 super simple style hacks that will help you look more put together every single day – and most of them can be done in just 2 minutes or less! Whether you're heading to the office or working from home, these quick wins will help you feel more confident and stylish without adding stress to your morning routine.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why outfit planning is the ultimate game-changer for your style.
  • The "reverse Coco Chanel" rule I swear by for adding personality to your outfit.
  • How adding subtle texture can transform your look from basic to polished, even if you prefer a minimalist style.
  • My controversial take on the "third piece rule" in 2025, including which traditional statement pieces to avoid if you don't want to look dated, and what to wear instead.
  • The truth about "condition blindness" and my daily 2-minute routine that keeps clothes looking expensive.

I hope this episode helps you realize that looking polished doesn't have to be time-consuming or complicated.  These quick style tweaks are designed to work with what you already own and fit into your real life. Whether you implement one tip or all ten, remember that small changes can make a big impact on how you look and feel.

Why Are Special Sizes So Difficult for Retailers?25 Mar 202100:25:04

With the news of LOFT discontinuing their plus-size options, this week we take a look at why special sizes like petite, plus, and tall are so difficult for retailers to get right.

More than 70% of women wear a size 14 or bigger, and 50% of American women are under 5'4"...so why it so hard to find great options?

We also cover why plus sizes cost more (maybe), why men don't struggle with this (not totally true), and what you can do if you want retailers to become more size-inclusive (spoiler: tell them!).

Finally, I share an unpopular opinion.

Starting a Clothing Line with Joanne Jarrett04 Mar 202100:54:52

Have you ever thought about starting your own clothing line? This week, we're talking with someone who actually did it! Joanne Jarrett started Shelfie Shoppe, a line of "street legal pajamas" after years of searching for loungewear she wouldn't be afraid to answer the door in!

We also talk about my appearance on her podcast, my love of birds, and a fun girls' night that involves...dentistry?

Joanne Jarrett is a family physician on her 17th year of maternity leave. She hosts the Fancy Free Podcast, where she and her guests share their most embarrassing funny stories. And as someone who is always looking to be super cozy at home, she designed a line of "street-legal pajamas". She and her husband run a mobile endodontics practice together, so she is also a reluctant office manager and part-time dental assistant. They have two teenage daughters and live in rural Montana.

Plus Size Style Advice with Katie Winnen25 Jul 202401:03:19

"Style is for everybody and every body" is one of the core values here at Everyday Style. However, we know that, in a society that often dictates beauty standards based on size and shape, we can all feel left out of the conversation at times.

In this conversation with stylist Katie Winnin, we talked about the challenges faced by plus size women in the fashion industry. Katie shared how her personal journey as a plus size woman influenced her career as a stylist dedicated to empowering the plus size community.

Katie highlighted the common mistakes plus size women can make when it comes to style, and emphasized the need to explore personal style rather than blindly following trends. She also addressed the misconception that cute clothes are not available for plus size women, challenging the idea that certain body sizes are not deserving of fashionable clothing.

We delved into the reasons why plus size women may hesitate to invest in their personal style, including waiting to achieve a certain body size. Katie emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and breaking free from societal norms that dictate what is considered fashionable for different body sizes.

Even if you aren't plus size, this conversation is a reminder that style is not limited by size or shape, and everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful in the clothes they wear.

In This Episode:

  • Katie's personal journey in the fashion industry
  • The challenges plus size women can face in finding clothing that fits well and represents their own style due to limited options in stores.
  • The importance of representation in the fashion industry.
  • Common style mistakes that plus size women can make, including mirroring someone else's style too closely and only dressing for trends.
  • Katie's top clothing brand recommendations

What Your Clothes Can (and Can't) Do For You27 Jun 202400:20:11

I’ve talked many times before about how you can dress for the day you want to have, and how you can use your wardrobe to help reach your goals. And while I know without a shadow of a doubt that the clothes you wear can be an incredibly powerful tool when used deliberately, I know there are things your wardrobe simply can't do.

In my styling career, I've tried to be mindful of setting realistic expectations for clients. My goal is about celebrating your current self while working towards the life you want.

Remember, your wardrobe is a tool to enhance your journey, not a magic wand to change who you are. Nonetheless, there are some powerful ways your clothes can impact your life.

So, let's set some expectations straight and explore the magic of dressing well, as I share three things your wardrobe can and can’t do for you.

In This Episode:

  • Some amazing feedback from a member of the Style Circle community.
  • Clothes can enhance your mood, not replace professional help.
  • Buying new clothes won't magically transform you into a different person. Your actions and mindset matter more than the clothes you wear.
  • Realistic expectations about what your wardrobe can do for your body are crucial for embracing your unique style journey.

As I mentioned in the show, this summer we are doing a series in the members-only podcast, sharing simple tips to dress your most challenging body parts. The Extra Credit podcast is just one of the incredible benefits of being a Stye Circle member - find out more and join our community, because this is one series that you don't want to miss.

Money Mindset with DeShena Woodard30 Jul 202000:44:25

In this episode, I interview Money Mindset guru DeShena Woodward about the money mistakes women often make, and how you can afford the wardrobe you've always wanted. We both agree that you should never go into debt for clothes, but that doesn't mean you can't have great style.

DeShena  is an everyday mom who never learned about money growing up. So, she did what everyone else did. She eventually found herself in debt and living paycheck to paycheck. Then after having a light bulb moment she was able to pay off $52,000 in a little over 2.5 years and is now 100% debt-free. She is now a Certified Life Coach specializing in debt freedom to help other women take charge of their financial future as well.
