In today's episode, I have the honour to talk to president Egils Levits. Only to mention a few highlights of his career, president Levits was Judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 1995 to 2004, Judge at the European Court of Justice from 2004 to 2019 and President of the Republic of Latvia from 2019 to 2023. In this final episode of the first season of “The energy law podcast” we are zooming out again from the in-depth discussions of different parts of energy law, talking about the geopolitical changes after Russia`s invasion of Ukraine that also effected global and European energy markets. With President Levits, I am going to discuss the role of courts in transitions, also exploring the concept of judicial activism. Please enjoy this episode!

In today's episode, I have the opportunity to talk to Prof. Dr. Torsten Körber, the Director of the Institute for Energy Law and the holder of the chair for Civil Law, Competition Law, Regulatory Law, and Law of the Digital Economy of the University of Cologne. We are going to talk about an important part of the energy transition: the heat transition which is crucial for mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the heating sector. In this context, we are also going to touch on the available technologies for the transition and the relationship between law and economics. In today's episode, I am thrilled to have Klaus Müller, President of the German National Regulatory Authority, as my special guest. With Klaus Müller, I am exploring ambitions and reality in energy regulation. Topic-wise, we will be talking about the problem of congested electricity networks and also the concept of network tariffs. Germany as an example, Klaus Müller will illustrate how an EU Member State can contribute to the development of hydrogen infrastructure for sustainable hydrogen markets. So let's embark on this enlightening journey into the realm of energy law.

In today's episode, I am talking to Bettina Maeding, Head of Energy Law at E.ON SE. The E.ON Group is one of Europe's largest operators of energy networks and energy infrastructure and a provider of innovative customer solutions for almost 50 million customers. That means the E.ON group is a massive private player in the energy transition. Together with Bettina Maeding, we will be exploring the key challenges and opportunities for energy companies, as well as the role of digitalization in the energy markets and key aspects of the new hydrogen and decarbonised gas market package. In today's episode, I am thrilled to interview Prof. Dr. Dirk Buschle, Legal Counsel & Deputy Director at the Energy Community Secretariat. We will explore key insights of his work at an international organisation expanding the acquis communautaire of EU energy law as a legally binding framework to third countries. The Energy Community brings together the European Union and its neighbours, the so-called Contracting Parties. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. Without further ado, let's move on to our discussion about energy law. In today's episode, I am thrilled to have Prof. Dr. Leigh Hancher, Professor of European Law at Tilburg University, together with her dog Kicky as my guest. We are going to talk about energy law as an area of law, long term contracts, contracts for difference, sustainability, and competition in energy markets. Energy law can be defined very narrowly, only focusing on energy sector specific regulations. It can also be defined rather broad, referring to all laws in their application on energy markets. It’s a field of law that is constantly evolving. With that, let's segue into our exploration of energy law. Enjoy.

In today's episode, I am happy to talk to Oliver Koch from the European Commission in Brussels. Together with Oliver, I am discussing the European Commission`s important role in energy market regulation. The Commission works to integrate national energy markets into European-wide markets, shapes the EU's energy landscape, and promotes a transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. In today's episode, I am thrilled to have Dr. Wolfgang Urbantschitsch, Executive Director of E-Control Austria, as our special guest. Amongst other topics, we will be exploring the role of national regulatory authorities in energy markets. According to the electricity market directive and the gas market directive, each Member State shall designate a single regulatory authority at national level. Further, Member States shall guarantee the independence of the regulatory authority and shall ensure that it exercises its powers impartially and transparently – key requirements that sometimes even challenge the Members States` constitutional framework. Lots of fun with this episode!
