A Deep Dive into ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) with Dr. Marianne Miller
Épisode 385
samedi 14 septembre 2024 • Durée 44:11
Today, I’m talking to Dr. Marianne Miller (all the way from San Diego) who has been in the mental health field for 27 years and has specialised in eating disorders for the last 12 years. Marianne was a full-time academic for 12 years and had a part-time eating disorder practice for much of that time (until she left the university) and went into private practice full-time in 2018. Marianne has guested several times on the podcast, mainly talking previously about binge eating.
Dr. Marianne loves working with eating disorders as a therapist and a coach. She takes a non-diet, feminist approach that helps people of all genders live empowered, authentic lives. She embraces the Health at Every Size model and is LGBTQIAA+ affirming. Dr. Marianne recently launched her Binge Eating Recovery online program. It helps high-achieving professionals regain their mental and emotional energy by shifting their relationship with food to be fully present in their life.
In this episode today, Marianne talks all about ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). I don’t think we have ever had an episode on this before. She explains what it is, who it impacts, who is vulnerable to developing ARFID, how to help someone heal and manage ARFID and also she tells us about her brand new course for professionals, sufferers and anyone supporting someone with ARFID. Marianne is absolutely passionate about this area of work, and you are going to learn so much from her. I hope that you enjoy the episode.

Her podcast “The No Sugarcoating Podcast” has a million downloads, over 400 episodes and is listened to, in over 88 countries. She was featured on TV Personality Whitney Port’s podcast and has also appeared on local TV 50 times in the last three years alone.

In this episode today, Amber is talking all about food and eating around your menstrual cycle – so apologies to any men listening, but hopefully you will benefit from this knowledge and pass this on to all the women in your life! ⠀ ⠀
Amber is going to explore increased appetite levels prior to the menstrual cycle and explain what creates this. She talks about how this can make women feel more vulnerable to using food about a week prior to their cycle. Amber goes on to explain how the mindset, mood and physical body all together create this effect and the kind of imbalances that can amplify it. A great topic and one we haven’t covered on the podcast before. ⠀ ⠀
Amber does a deep dive here and gives a multitude of tips and wisdom on how to find a more balanced place of harmony and healing, drawing on her own lived experience and through many years of supporting her clients. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

How to Embrace the Shades of Grey, When ’All or Nothing Thinking’ is Sabotaging Eating Disorder Recovery
Épisode 281
mercredi 19 juillet 2023 • Durée 25:07
A Bite Size episode!
It is incredibly common for people with eating disorders to struggle with 'all or nothing thinking'. This frequently leads to 'good phases' and the contrasting, wholly chaotic and distressing 'bad phases' and this approach doesn't support balanced mental and physical well-being.
In this episode, I talk about 'all or nothing thinking'. I discuss the ways that it can be so detrimental in recovery and explore how to take steps towards embracing the grey, along with greater contentment and peace. I hope that you enjoy it.

An Incredible Journey of Parenting Two Daughters with Anorexia and a Mother’s Journey of Overhauling her own Dieting and Body Issues, with Kristi Koeter
Épisode 283
samedi 15 juillet 2023 • Durée 45:54
Today, I’m talking to Kristi Koeter. Kristi is a former journalist and personal trainer, marketer, and now author, based in the Austin, Texas, area.
Two of Kristi’s three children have had anorexia nervosa, and both completed Partial Hospitalisation Programs in the U.S. Her oldest daughter, now 19, has been stable in her recovery for several years, whilst her youngest, 14 years old, is still early in her recovery.
When Kristi’s youngest daughter’s weight started dropping rapidly after she came out of treatment, Kristi knew that she needed to take more proactive action. She also ended up having to take a really hard look at herself; her own eating and body image issues. Using the Maudsley Method, and her daughter’s care team, this has really supported her daughter in transitioning in her recovery.
In Kristi’s just-released, co-authored book called Show Your Work: Successful Women Share the Bumpy Roads to Their Biggest Wins, she discusses the realization that in order to help her youngest daughter recover from her eating disorder, she had to address her own years of disordered eating and overexercise. She is also writing Almost Sated on Substack, where she is chronicling her transition to intuitive eating and healthy movement. She knows that it’s possible for parents to help their children even if they are struggling with their own eating issues, but she has felt passionate about working on herself to support this whole process.
When Kristi’s not writing, she is mountain biking, hiking, or spending time with my kids and new husband.
So Kristi and her daughters are on an incredible journey. Kristi herself has had to do some extraordinarily difficult and challenging work in facing her own demons in this process, which she is doing wholeheartedly. I absolutely commend Kristi for her vulnerability and openness in talking about all of this.
In the episode today, Kristi talks about: -
- What it’s like to have two children with anorexia, and how different the experience was with each of them
- Giving up dieting for the well-being of loved ones
- Tips for parents making the transition to intuitive eating and healthy movement after a lifetime of dieting and exercise.
So much value and inspiration here. I hope that you enjoy it.

The Limitations of Body Mass Index (BMI) - Eating Disorder Recovery and Wider Health
Épisode 279
mercredi 12 juillet 2023 • Durée 27:29
A Bite Size episode! The Body Mass Index (BMI) has rightly come under increased scrutiny in recent years. It is outdated, not relevant for many individuals and can actually encourage disordered eating behaviours and poor body image. However, it continues to be used in eating disorder recovery and as a general marker of health, albeit a weight-focused one. In this episode, I explore the history of BMI and its limitations, whilst discussing alternative markers of health.

Victoria shares books that were particularly helpful to her around fat activism and eating disorder recovery memoirs. She shares how much of her initial recovery journey was explored alone, rather than with support.
