We all have a Path 2 Redemption, What’s yours? Keep in mind! We all deserve a Second Chance and Lester Young is proof of that! Lester Young, Jr is a native of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. At the age of 19, Mr. Young was given a life sentence (with the possibility of parole after serving 20 years). During his time in prison, Lester struggled with finding redemption and often wondered what his purpose was. While journaling he asked himself this question, “What is the footprint you want to leave in this world?” It was then that he realized his purpose was to be “that” voice to help at risk youth. With approval from the warden, Lester along with the prison chaplain began meeting to create outlines, programs, and classes to instruct and mentor fellow inmates. This is where the idea of him establishing his non-profit organization “Path2Redemption” got its start. On May 15, 2014 (22 years and 5 months later), Lester was released on parole. Even after his release, the outlines of his programs are still being taught in prison. He also received a pardon by South Carolina Probation and Parole Board in 2020. Lester has hosted numerous workshops for at risk youth as well as incarcerated individuals. He’s always doing more to be a “better him”. Just as 9-1-1 is universally known for use during emergencies, like a heart attack or car accident, we need 9-8-8 for people experiencing a mental health crisis. When people in crisis do not receive a mental health response, we see tragic outcomes. They may engage with law enforcement rather than mental health professionals, go to an emergency room where they wait hours — or even days — to get mental health care, or lose their lives to suicide because help wasn’t fast enough. We need to ensure that everyone who experiences a mental health crisis, no matter where they live, receives a mental health response. To achieve that, we need an easy-to-access crisis response system that is a core part of our national strategy for mental health care and suicide prevention. The creation of 9-8-8, a 24/7, 3-digit crisis hotline, is the gateway to any crisis system and is a core service that should be available in every community. The 3-digit crisis hotline should be provided with sufficient resources to ensure that no one goes without help if they need it. And it should easily connect people to services and supports in their community. Local communities must ensure that crisis services are available to respond when people need in-person help and intensive services in the community. Implementing a nationwide, 3-digit crisis hotline and connecting people to timely and effective care will help ensure that people in crisis receive the help they need, when they need it.

She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, and a translation fellowship by U.S. Poets in Mexico. Nandi Comer’s writing received the Vera Myer Strube Award in poetry. Comer is the winner of Crab Orchard Review’s 2014 Richard Peterson Poetry Prize. In 2016, she completed a master’s degree in African American Literature from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from the English Department at Indiana University. She is a 2019 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Over the years, Comer has been dedicated to youth development by serving as a writer-in-residence in Detroit Public Schools Community District and community centers. She has also worked in collaboration with organizations, including YArts and InsideOut Literary Arts Projects. Ms. Comer served as a curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations and in 2018 received the William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University. Comer’s poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast. She is the author of American Family: Syndrome (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Northwestern University Press), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. Comer is currently the director of Allied Media Projects Seeds Program and the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to providing reading and professional development opportunities to narrative makers of color in Detroit.
