How effective are your driving observations?15 Sep 202200:12:59

In this episode, Kev and Tracey talk about effective driving observations, one of the top ten reasons people fail their driving test.

This episode is a duplicate of an episode in our new spin-off podcast series Driving Test Tips.  We are creating the new stand-alone series based on the information the DVSA publish about the Top Ten Reasons people fail their driving test.  While this information is important in relation to passing your driving test, it is also important to recognise that each of these reasons is also connected to accident statistics and becoming a safe driver on the road for as long as you hold a driving license.

We chat about:

  • What we mean by effective observations
  • The most common times that people fail to make observations
  • Why are effective observations so important for keeping you safe on the road, not just for your driving test

While listening to this episode, ask yourself:

  • How effectively are you looking while driving?
  • How well are you able to judge the speed of oncoming traffic?
  • Did you know about the connection between driving test competencies and accident statistics?
  • What can you do to start improving your driving observations?

The Ready to Pass campaign has been created to help ensure that you have prepared sufficiently for your driving test in response to the current pass rate, which has a 47% success rate.

Driving Confidence Challenge Part Two07 Jul 202200:05:43

In this episode, Kev & Tracey continue with the driving confidence challenge!  This is part two of 3 episodes with different tasks to carry out each week to help you build your driving confidence.

That’s it for part two, so get visualising your route and commit to taking these baby steps towards building your driving confidence!

The Driving Confidence Podcast - Season One round up26 May 202200:10:10

In this episode, Kev and Tracey reflect on the learning curve of starting a podcast and also which have been their favourite episodes in Season One.

Kev’s favourite episodes include the one about his blindfolded driving experience as he can reflect back on the experience at a later date and also the episode about not letting stalling the car stop you, as several of his pupils have said they found it useful and have been putting it into practice during lessons and driving practice.

Tracey’s favourite episodes include why talking to yourself isn’t as mad as it seems as she has had people mention to her that they notice talking to themselves during difficult driving situations helps.  And also the episode with Terry Cook as she has had messages from people who have found his podcasts helpful for their driving too.

Both Kev and Tracey reflected on the episodes that told a story and feel that those were relatable to others who are struggling with driving nerves, stress or anxiety and so they hope to incorporate more stories from others in future seasons.

While listening to this episode, ask yourself:
Are there any episodes we mention that you would like to catch up on?
Which episode has been most relatable to your driving experience?
What would you like us to cover in future episodes?

Would you like to feature in a future Q&A podcast?  Do you have a story that others might relate to? Driving Confidence - Penny's story of how her driving phobia stopped her driving for 13 years and how she overcame her fears to start driving again12 May 202200:47:17

In this episode, Kev and Tracey talk to Penny Ling who is a hypnotherapist who has overcome her own driving phobia and didn't drive for 13 years.  She now drives confidently, as well as helping other people to overcome their own driving fears.

Penny describes how her family background, stress levels and a series of unfortunate events built up to her stopping driving.  How she tried hypnotherapy and it didn't work, before embarking on a career change as a hypnotherapist, resulting in her returning to driving and writing a book to help others.

While listening to this episode, ask yourself:

Are your driving fears made worse by your general stress levels?

How full is your stress bucket?

What driving experiences have you had that may have reduced your driving confidence?  Are they related to your driving skill or something else?

What techniques have you employed so far to build your driving confidence?

Calming Driving Nerves - 8 minute relaxation exercise - DO NOT LISTEN WHILE DRIVING!05 May 202200:11:07

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week (9-15 May 22) and so we thought we would share one of our relaxation exercises to help support anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by their thoughts.

Please do not listen to this exercise while driving!

This exercise helps you visualise putting your thoughts on leaves on a stream and allowing them to float away.  While the exercise is not related to driving, it may be helpful to allow you to reset or relax before driving, helping you to feel calmer and more in control, ready to give your attention to your driving instead of your thoughts.

Resources:

The Mental Health Foundation has a range of resources available to help you look after your mental health which you can find on this link: https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/your-mental-health/looking-after-your-mental-health

Driving Test Clinic - DW April 202228 Apr 202200:26:05

In this episode, Kev and Tracey talk to David, one of our podcast listeners who got in touch for some advice about their upcoming driving assessment.

Kev took David through an NLP timeline technique, asking him to imagine himself in the different stages during the run-up to the assessment, asking him how he felt and what techniques he could use at each stage.

Tracey chipped in by asking about body sensations and whether they were interpreted positively or negatively and also tweaked one of David's techniques slightly to remember him driving successfully to help him feel more confident.

Calming Driving Nerves - Posture, Body Language & Smiles31 Mar 202200:21:36

In this episode, Kev and Tracey talk about tips around body language and posture for helping to calm driving nerves.

Kev talks about the clues that a student's body language give him, and how when a student becomes stressed or tense it has a knock-on effect on their driving and performance. He also talks about how this stress can sometimes be a clue that a student has a gap in their knowledge or understanding about the driving task that is making them feel stressed.

Tracey talks about power posing, good posture to allow your body to breathe freely, how to relax tense muscles, pandiculation and smiling as ways of calming down the body's response to stress.

If you would like to hear more about power posing here is a link to Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk - https://youtu.be/Ks-_Mh1QhMc

Quick Tips - What to do one week before your driving test10 Mar 202200:12:55

In this episode, Kev and Tracey continue on from the previous episode and discuss their suggestions for how to manage nerves if you have one week to go until your driving test.

Kev talks about making sure you have everything you need ready in advance of the day of the test, and that also you find out what exactly will happen on the day by speaking to your instructor about what happens at the test centre.

Tracey reminds about replaying playing mind movies mentioned in the previous episode as well as suggesting that now is a good time to practice breathing exercises, in advance of the test and also suggesting that some people might find hypnotherapy audios useful.

Kev then talks about a game he plays with students who are worried about the driving test examiner, which can help them look at the driving test from a different perspective.

Quick Tips - What to do one month before your driving test03 Mar 202200:14:14

In this episode, Kev and Tracey discuss their top tips for how to tackle nerves and prepare for your driving test when you have one month to go.

Kev talks about ways to look at your driving strengths and weaknesses so that you can plan how to best use the time before your test and suggests using the coaching wheel, a reflective log, mock tests and planning your remaining lessons.

Kev and Tracey discuss what the examiner is looking for when they assess your driving to ensure that you are safe, confident and competent and ready to drive on your own post-test, demonstrating that you can drive independently, making your own decisions without help being important.

Tracey also talks about how you can use imagery techniques such as creating mind movies to build your confidence in between driving lessons.

Calming Driving Nerves - Why talking to yourself isn't as mad as it seems!24 Feb 202200:21:26

In this episode, Kev and Tracey discuss why talking to yourself while driving isn’t as mad as it might seem, and why talking yourself through difficult driving tasks can help you to feel calmer and keep your attention focused on what you are doing.

Psychological research in child development, education and sports people suggests that private self talk can help to regulate emotions and improve performance so it seems logical that this can also be applied into driving scenarios.

Kev talks about the benefits for him as an instructor when a students talks through a task aloud in driving lessons and suggests this might also be useful for those who practice driving between lessons with parents and others.  Kev and Tracey also discuss using self talk as a strategy for the driving test.

Mindfulness Quick Tips - Stop your negative thoughts about driving in 2 minutes14 Feb 202200:06:00

In this episode, Tracey will introduce you to a mindfulness technique that can help you interrupt negative thoughts within a minute or two, and help get you in the right mindset for driving so that you are paying attention to now, before you drive, instead of paying attention to your thoughts.

This technique is great for anybody who is having negative thoughts about their driving, and also if you've had a busy day and are feeling distracted instead of paying attention to your driving.  The exercise will help to reset your mind and bring you back to paying attention to the present moment, exactly where you need to be before you go driving.

We recommend that you do this before you drive.  So please don't try this while you're driving.

Welcome to The Driving Confidence Podcast13 Feb 202200:06:53

Welcome to our very first episode of The Driving Confidence Podcast.  This is our trailer and introduction to the podcast and to us.

We want to transform the way you feel about your driving and build your driving confidence so this podcast will be looking at ways to manage and calm your nerves, stresses and anxieties around driving.

You might be listening to this if you are a learner driver who is feeling nervous about your lessons, or have your driving test coming up soon and are looking for some hints and tips. Maybe you've already passed your driving test, but feel nervous when you drive or perhaps you passed your test years ago, but never really built up your driving confidence.

Kev is a driving instructor, as well as training people to become driving instructors and providing courses and training to driving instructors to help them become the best in the driver training industry.  He is also an NLP practitioner, personal development and business coach.

Tracey is not a driving instructor. Her background is in holistic therapists, mindfulness and stress management and she recently completed a psychology degree with The Open University.  Kev and Tracey combined their skills and experience to create the Confident Drivers website which offers nervous drivers a range of resources to help them build their confidence and beat driving nerves and anxiety.
