Welcome back everybody! In this episode I am reacting to a judge Judy episode that involves a large dog with a small dog. The small dog unfortunately is euthanized because of the damage done and the amount of money it would cost for surgery. And even if this gentleman laid out the money for surgery on his little dog there are no guarantees because internal injuries cannot be seen without surgery. This is a sad story. I don't think that the retractable leash is because the dog was attacked at all. I still hate retractable leashes and I strongly strongly feel that it did not help with the owner retrieving his dog. The large dog owner is completely negligent. She did not have care, control, and custody over her dog. I am passionate about leash laws and length of the leash you put on your dog. In this episode, I am critiquing another trainer's handling of a reactive dog. I do this to show you what not to do with your dog. I do this also to protect your dog. I am their advocate. I am here for the dogs. It is important to use scientific evidence-based methods in training, not Force and fear. Force methods of training or old-fashioned and outdated. Punishment is easy. It is easy to punish a dog for being bad but you must think about what you are teaching your dog at that particular point. You're not teaching them anything other than to shut down. Because shutting down keeps them safe and keeps you quiet and away from them. And then you have a ticking time bomb because you shut down every warning signal that your dog would ever give you when they are reactive. We need our dogs to give us signals. How else are we supposed to communicate with our pets if we're correcting them and shutting down their ways of communication? In this episode I am reacting to a dog trainer working with he called a “Dominant Dog” You will see the trainer repeatedly correct the dog until the dog retreats into the state of learned helplessness which means he was exposed to repeated aversive stimuli without being able to escape. You will witness the dog repeatedly try to escape this trainers repeated corrections. This trainer is using old fashioned and outdated techniques that are not evidence based. I talk about what works and what doesn’t work when training a reactive dog. Safety measures should be taken by using a basket muzzle, a gentle leader, a martingale collar and a safety lead. So you’ve got your puppy and you’re in love! Yeah, all your equipment you’re good human. Got the crate got the jingle bells. You’ve got all of the enrichment toys you could fit in your house you’ve got your 4 foot leash. And now what? Now you need to go get some training what kind of training will that depends on you group class private maybe a little bit of both. Definitely group classes though because you need to socialize your puppy. Their social window is small and closes around 4 1/2 months of age. So don’t waste time. Make sure they’re socialized with age appropriate puppies. The next thing you need to think about is what kind of a trainer do I want you want a trainer that uses science and evidence based methods you do not want to force trainer you do not want a balance trainer. Whatever that is, I know what it is I’m just saying! There’s no need to use force when training there’s no need to put your hands on your dog and force them into a sit or roll them over and be alpha in your mind!
