In this episode, Ronn and Mike answer two questions sent in by listeners: 1) Would it be possible to think of Joseph (Genesis 37-50) as a partial fulfillment of the promises made to Abraham? It seems that some of the promises made to Abraham were satisfied through Joseph and his story. 2) Please explain whether God was "silent" during the period between the testaments. It sounds like he may not have been as silent as I once thought. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY
| EP093: John 11:1-44: The Raising of Lazarus | 18 Jan 2026 | 00:55:45 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike enjoy the story of Lazarus' resuscitation in John 11:1-44. For several reasons found within this narrative, Ronn recommended that original readers would have been tempted to regard Lazarus as the "disciple that Jesus loved" referred to in later stories of John. A key element in this story, of course, was Martha's belief that Lazarus would "rise again in the resurrection" (11:24), offering a chance to talk about death and resurrection beliefs within 2nd Temple Judaism. Did the crowd expect Jesus to literally "be the resurrection and the life"? Apparentliy not—until Lazarus heard his name attached to the invitation to come out of the tomb! The conversation closes with personal application of this story to our understanding and hopes for eternal life.

| EP091: John 10: Jesus' Use of Psalm 82 | 04 Jan 2026 | 01:31:35 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike work their way through John 10, starting with Jesus' self-identification as Israel's "good shepherd." They recommend that Jesus is thuf fulfilling the meaning of Ezekiel 34, which recalls the extended metaphor of Yahweh claiming to be Israel's ultimate shepherd. This leads to a necessary discussion of the issue of "divine agency," and how God could be seen working through figures who receive their authority through God's appointment. Closing discussion attempts explanations of Jesus' curious statement that he and his Father are "one" (v. 30) and Jesus' use of Psalm 82 to extinguish charges of blasphemy.
| EP090: John 9: The Healing of the Man Born Blind | 28 Dec 2025 | 01:11:06 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike look at John 9, reading through the extended story of the man born blind who is healed by Jesus. They discuss the significance of some of the interesting details of the story, including why Jesus patched the man's eyes with spittle, and why he had the man go a half-mile away to wash in the Pool of Siloam. Ronn recommended that the use of "sinner" in the story hearkens back to the OT understanding that this was a category akin to someone outside the covenant of Israel, as opposed to someone who simply was guilty of sin. Closing discussion noted how the man was led to confess to Jesus that he believed in the "Son of Man," a title reminiscent of Daniel 7's role of the messiah.

In this episode, Ronn and Mike study the second half of John 8 (vv.13-59), noting that the conversation which follows Jesus' handling of the woman taken in adultery is key for understanding the full narrative. They discuss the theological implications of Jesus' claims, the nature of what it means to be a "sinner" in 2nd Temple Judaism, and the identity of believers as children of Abraham. They explore the significance of the woman caught in adultery, tying together the broader themes of covenant and identity in relation to faith. The conversation also touches on modern cultural reflections and the search for truth in today's society.
| EP078: John 7:32-8:12: The Woman Taken in Adultery | 05 Oct 2025 | 01:20:42 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike look at John 7:32-8:12, exploring the context of Jesus' teachings and his interactions with non-believers who had been threatening to kill him. They discuss the significance of the Holy Spirit's promised arrival, the debate surrounding Jesus' identity, and the woman caught in adultery. Ronn recommended that this last story, though not originally included in John's gospel, likely found its way into the fourth gospel due to its historical and theological importance to the doctrine of salvation in the early church, underscoring the idea that the door to salvation consisted of joining Abraham's family as opposed to simply having one's sin forgiven.
| EP077: John 7:1-31: Jesus, the Law | 28 Sep 2025 | 01:22:47 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike look at John 7:1-31. They discuss the importance of constructive disagreements in theology (reflecting upon the recent death of Charlie Kirk), the secretive nature of Jesus' ministry, and the political context surrounding his teachings. Their conversation also explores the treatment of the law by Jesus, the nature of demons (a highly nuanced issue relating to the Greek concept of daimonia), and the significance of Hezekiah's prayer for God's forgiveness of Israelites who had been guilty of breaking Mosaic law (2 Chron. 30).

| EP075: John 6:41-71: Being Drawn to Jesus by the Father | 14 Sep 2025 | 01:05:34 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike discuss the latter part of John 6, taking on the themes of forgiveness, the identity of Jesus, and the implications of his teachings on communion (they understand the concept of eating Jesus' flesh to be metaphorical for internalizing his teachings and life). They explore the complexities of forgiveness, and how this issue often lacks clear biblical answers to our modern questions. The conclude by discussing the significance of Jesus' claims about himself, and the reactions of his followers, culminating in a pivotal moment where many disciples turn away (6:66). Peter's declaration of faith highlights the importance of loyalty to Jesus.

The motivations behind seeking Jesus are noted as being complex and often misguided, though Jesus' patience in motivating ultimate commitment and loyalty are always present. The conversation also touches on the metaphor of Jesus as the bread of life and the promise of resurrection, setting the stage for future discussions on these themes.

The beginning of the episode includes an appreciation for the legacy of John MacArthur, who had recently passed away. Ronn had worked under Dr. MacArthur at The Master's University in Newhall, CA in the mid-1990s.
| EP101: Q&A Session #16 | 22 Mar 2026 | 00:49:21 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike answer two questions sent in by listeners: 1) What should we think about Roman Catholics who venerate Mary and give her titles that should be reserved for Jesus? Does God consider this idolatry? Or can God simply see this as an example of a loyal (righteous) person being unwittingly misled? 2) Why does Jesus say "ask and it shall be given"? Is this specifically for his disciples, or for us believers? And how do we deal with prayers which are not answered? Is there any reason God would keep a person in a situation that is sin when they have asked to be freed from it?

They conclude with their hope of the potential for greater Christian unity, not just amongst Protestants, but of the Western and Eastern arms of the Church and the way forward as we all grow in our understanding and appreciation of loyalty laid down before King Jesus.

The study details the implications of Jesus' understanding of belief and loyalty when it comes to his expectation of "following" him into eternal life. | EP054: John 1:29-51: How Did Jesus "Take Away the Sin of the World"? | 13 Apr 2025 | 00:59:13
In this episode, Ronn and Mike discuss John 1:29-51, especially noting how Jesus would be the "lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (1:29). They begin by interpreting Old Testament "atonement" (Hebrew, kaphar) texts within their original context. They note how the practice of sacrifice across the ancient world was often accompanied by symbolic acts of "sanctification" as a person prepared to come into the presumed presence of a deity. This is what Jesus would do in his death, claimed John—he would cleanse not only the loyal Israelite, but anyone in the world who would put his faith in Jesus. 📢 Announcing the Image Conference! 📢 The Michael S. | EP099: Q&A Session #15 | 08 Mar 2026 | 00:47:46
In this episode, Ronn and Mike answer two questions sent in by listeners: 1) After the resurrection, NT writers rarely refer to Jesus simply by the name "Jesus" without attaching a title such as "Lord," "Christ," or "Jesus Christ." Is referring to Jesus without a title unintentionally minimizing early Christian confession about its messiah? 2) The story of 1 Kings 22, in which a spirit is sent by Yahweh to lie to Ahab's prophets, seems to imply that created gods have the ability to manipulate or obstruct human freedom. Is this story teaching this, and are there any other OT passages which teach this? THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY

| EP051: John 1:2-18: Is Jesus a "Unique Deity"? | 23 Mar 2025 | 01:09:38 | |
In this episode, Ronn and Mike explore John 1:2-18. They consider John's explanation of Jesus' pre-existence, his role as co-creator with the God, the active role of disciples "taking" Jesus in becoming "children of God" (1:12), and the description of Jesus as "the only begotten" of God (1:14, 18). They explore the invisibility of the God of Israel, the unique relationship between Jesus and his Father, and the broader implications of Jesus' deity and messiahship within the context of early Christian thought. In conclusion, they recommend that monogones theos reflects the original text in 1:18, finding John to explain Jesus as a "unique deity" who comes from the "chest" or lap of his Father.
