Hog Heaven on the Taylor River with John Evon27 Aug 202601:19:57

Episode 178 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – Aug 27, 2026.

Our destination is Colorado's Gunnison Valley and the Taylor River to crack the code on one of the West's great technical tailwaters. Known for large trout this Gold Medal tailwater is a graduate school for the advanced fly angler where light tippets, long leaders and perfect drifts are a must.  And if you get it right, the rewards can be a legit shot at the trout of a lifetime.

Joining me is head guide and fly shop manager, John Evon, Taylor River Anglers in Almont, Colorado.  John gives us the low down on the Taylor from top to bottom and along the way, we hit the famous hog trough and hear stories about epic hatches, banner 50 fish days, and a broken reel, an abandoned rod, and one very big rainbow.

In this episode:

  •       Why the Taylor River is considered graduate school for fly anglers
  •       The legendary Hog Trough—and the monsters that live there
  • ·        A 40¼-inch Colorado record rainbow from a river barely 50 feet across
  • ·        Fishing the Taylor with light tippet, long leaders, and perfect drifts
  • ·        Exploring the Upper Taylor, pocket water, undercut banks, and high-country trout
  • ·        Big summer caddis hatches and terrestrial fishing
  • ·        Where to find miles of public access away from the crowds
  • ·        How a nine-year-old caught roughly 50 trout in three hours—then got tired and quit
  • ·        The bizarre story of a broken reel, an abandoned rod, and one very big rainbow
  • ·        Why experienced anglers sometimes get humbled on the Taylor
  • ·        John's unlikely journey from a Chicago office job to Colorado fishing guide
  • ·        What John has learned about teaching beginners on one of Colorado's most technical trout streams
  • ·        And why the Taylor River's combination of big trout, technical fishing, and spectacular mountain country keeps anglers coming back

Episode 177 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – Aug 13, 2026.

Our destination is the salt marshes of the Texas Coast for Redfish with renown author, fly fishing die-hard, and adventurer, Riverhorse Nakadate.   Redfish are the bruisers of inshore fishing, known for aggressive strikes, blistering drag-screaming runs, and a stubborn, bulldog-like fight, and the Texas coast offer world class opportunities.

Riverhorse explains why he loves Texas Redfish and shares stories from a life spent running wild:  climbing to the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in search of trophy trout, spending 19 hours in an African jail, surviving extended underwater beat downs and shark bumps while surfing the world, canoeing 200 miles alone through the boundary waters, and why a canoe can set you free.

In this episode:

  • The salt marshes of Texas — home to redfish, the bruisers of the inshore game.
  • The story of Dickey Betts spray-painting his famous gold top Les Paul red before a gig.
  • Fishing the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison reached by a terrifying descent.
  • How "Riverhorse" became his legal middle name.
  • Held 19 hours in an African jail
  • Why water and wilderness are "where true living happens."
  • A childhood on the Colorado River in Austin, and a steelhead-fishing stepfather who opened the door to the ocean and the fly rod.
  • Surfing close calls — underwater beatdowns, shark encounters, and more.
  • The case for the canoe..
  • Topwater bass in the Texas Piney Woods, and his go-to swim frog.
  • Going undercover with game wardens against illegal longlining and shark finning in the Gulf
  • Redfish technique: Texas sight-fishing on the flats versus Louisiana's winter giants, plus fly setups and night fishing.
  • A 24-foot crocodile charge in Mexico, and the desperate escape.

A Good Drift on the Madison River with Alice Owsley18 Jun 202601:33:32

Episode 173 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – June 18, 2026.

Thanks to Redd's Flies for supporting the show

Our destination is the legendary Madison River, one of Montana's most iconic trout fisheries.  Joining me is 27-year guiding veteran, Alice Owsley—owner of Riverside Anglers, West Yellowstone, Montana.

The Madison is where big Western water meets technical fishing, where 90 miles of riffles can humble you fast—or reward you with the fish of a lifetime. It's a river shaped by dams but still wild at heart, with everything from controlled, almost spring-creek-like water to long, brawling freestone stretches.

Alice is known for doing things differently, reading water and planning her days in ways most anglers miss, and helping people unlock a river that can feel overwhelming at first glance.

In this episode:

  • ·        Why the Madison River remains one of the most legendary trout fisheries in the world
  • ·        How different sections of the Madison fish like entirely different rivers
  • ·        The best times of year to fish the Madison and what to expect each season
  • ·        Understanding the Madison's famous salmon fly hatch and how hatches move through the river system
  • ·        Walk-and-wade fishing versus floating
  • ·        Reading water and identifying productive holding lies
  • ·        The truth about fishing pressure, crowds, and finding solitude on a famous river
  • ·        Yellowstone National Park, alpine lakes, and avoiding grizzly bears
  • ·        What Alice learned guiding celebrities, including Henry Winkler
  • ·        The story behind the biggest brown trout Alice has ever seen landed on a dry fly

Cracking the Code on the Battenkill River with Doug Lyons05 Jun 202601:29:09

Episode 172 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – June 5, 2026.

Our destination is the Battenkill River — one of New England's most iconic freestone stream, where wild brown and brook trout test even the most patient anglers.

Joining me is Doug Lyons, author of The Fly Fishing Guide to the Battenkill, conservationist, and self-described "professional recreationist" who has fished this river for over 50 years. Doug breaks down the Battenkill's seasonal hatches, the wading techniques that make or break your day, and the habitat restoration work that's brought this river roaring back.

In this episode:

• Why the Battenkill's reputation as a "tough" river is earned — and why anglers keep coming back

• The complete hatch chart: Hendricksons, Grannom Caddis, Sulfurs, Isonychias, Cream Drakes, Tricos, and BWOs

• Wading and approach tactics that get you within 30-40 feet of feeding fish

• How to read the rise — and why Doug carries binoculars on the river

• The limestone influence that makes the Battenkill's bug life so rich

• Conservation wins: how habitat restoration produced a 500% increase in fish numbers

• Local intel: Wayside Country Store, Mulligan's, nearby blue lines, and more

Is This Wyoming's Best Kept Fly-Fishing Secret?21 May 202601:31:07

Episode 171 of the Destination Angler Podcast– May 21, 2026

Our destination is the Green River below Fontenelle Dam — perhaps the last major undiscovered trophy trout stream in the lower 48 states.

Tucked inside the Seedskiddie National Wildlife Refuge in the middle of Wyoming's Red Desert, this high desert tailwater is a lush ribbon of life most traveling anglers have never heard of — and that's exactly the point. Today we sit down with Van Beacham, fourth-generation fly fisherman, author of Fly Fisher's Guide to New Mexico, and owner of The Solitary Angler, who has been quietly fishing and guiding this river since the 1980s.

With huge biomass and 18"+ rainbows and browns as the standard, this is a trophy fishery — not a numbers river. Van breaks down why it stays uncrowded, what it takes to unlock the river's big fish, and why the solitude here rivals anything in the American West.

In this episode:

  • Why the Green River below Fontenelle Dam is the lower 48's best-kept secret
  • Fish species: rainbows, browns, Bonneville and Snake River cutthroats
  • The nymphing rig Van relies on — crayfish pattern, San Juan worm, and small mayflies
  • Managing the notorious weed problem in July and August
  • How Van built The Solitary Angler's private-water club model on Hams Fork, Smiths Fork, and Fontenelle Creek
  • Wildlife: trumpeter swans, moose, bald eagles, and antelope in the Seedskiddie Refuge
  • The river's deep history — Oregon Trail, mountain man rendezvous, and Jim Bridger's Fort

Whether you're planning a Wyoming trip or just dreaming of uncrowded water with legitimate trophy fish, Van delivers the local knowledge you need before you go.

Can the Big Hole Recover? With Jim Olsen12 Feb 202601:11:28

Episode 164 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – February 12, 2026

Today our destination is the Big Hole River in southwest Montana — a place trout anglers have revered for generations and home to the last native Arctic grayling in the Lower 48. But is this storied fishery at a crossroads? Trout numbers are lower than they've been in decades, even as anglers still find good fish. So what's really happening out there — and what will it take to turn things around?

Jim Olsen, Fisheries Biologist with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, gives us the facts.

New England's Best Kept Fly Fishing Secret? The Upper Connecticut River15 Jan 202601:22:11

Episode 162 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – January 15, 2026

Our destination is the Upper Connecticut River—a remote tailwater in far northern New Hampshire that delivers outstanding fly fishing with remarkably light pressure.

In this episode, I'm joined by veteran guide Bill Bernhardt, a 20-year Orvis-endorsed guide and co-owner of Points North Outfitters in Pittsburg, NH. Bill explains why this system fishes more like a Western tailwater than classic New England water—and why it remains one of the region's true sleepers.

We talk trout and landlocked salmon, seasonal strategies, favorite fly patterns, remote ponds, and the miles of public access that make solitude easy to find for anglers willing to explore.  Plus, tales of huge Atlantic Salmon, landlocks pushing 30", guiding a blind man, and mistakenly trespassing on Ted Turner's Patagonia paradise.

🎣 Is the Upper Connecticut River New England's best-kept fly fishing secret? You decide.

Confidence on the Upper Delaware River with Joe Demaldaris18 Dec 202501:21:43

Episode 160 of the Destination Angler Fly Fishing Podcast – Dec 18, 2025

Today Our destination is the Upper Delaware River, a legendary tailwater often called the crown jewel of the East. This tailwater system is known for clear, cold water all year long and highly selective wild brown and rainbow trout – a graduate school for fly anglers where precise presentation and light tippets are the rule.

Joining me is long time guide, fly shop owner, and Upper Delaware expert, Joe Demalderis, Cross Current Outfitters in Hancock, PA.   He's been fishing the Delaware since the 1970's, appeared in many national fishing magazines like Field & Stream, Trout, American Angler, and quoted in fly fishing books like, 50 Best Tailwaters to Fly Fish, and Paul Weamer's Fly Fishing Guide to the Upper Delaware River.

We cover important questions like, what are the major hatches and the most effective fly patterns, what's the character of the water from top to bottom, why is a downstream presentation a must along with stories of swimming porcupines, wild trout so selective they even refuse naturals, and some bougie shore lunch ideas.

Tess is a founding member of the women's Team USA and has represented the United States at world championships in Norway, British Columbia, the Czech Republic, and most recently, Idaho, where they took first place.  Listen in as Tess shares her favorite patterns, her go-to competition tactics, and what separates the top anglers from the ones who get schooled.

The Land of Fire and Ice: Iceland with Tim Cammisa and Matti Hákonarson30 Jan 202501:30:29

Our destination is the land of fire and ice--Iceland with Tim Cammisa, author and owner of Trout & Feather, and Matti Hákonarson, guide and owner of Iceland Fishing Guide. With its stunning scenery, friendly people, and waters teeming with plentiful Atlantic salmon, hard-fighting arctic char, and massive sea-run and resident brown trout, Iceland is among the most incredible places in the world for fly anglers.

Matti and Tim give us the ultimate rundown on fly fishing in Iceland—covering the culture, the bugs, pro tips and tactics, and the best times of year to chase each species. Plus, we'll hear incredible stories of battling monster browns, dancing with Atlantic salmon, and the almost-religious art of fly selection.

Tim's latest book, Tying Euro Nymphs, features top flies from some of the best anglers in the world. And stick around to the end for tales of cheap whale meat, fermented shark, haggis, and Iceland's infamous drink—Black Death. Oh, and a lesson in how not to fish with your wife.

Big Bones on the Berry Islands with Bonefish Royalty21 Nov 202401:14:30

Our destination is the Berry Islands in the Bahamas for trophy bonefish and permit with guides Percy Darville, Freddie Dames, Travis Sands, and Soul Fly Lodge owner Kyle Schaefer.   The Berry Islands are known for miles and miles of undisturbed, beautiful sand flats, large fish, and plenty of solitude.

About our guests, 28 years ago, Freddie worked on a lobster boat for weeks at a time until his wife had enough and switched to a fly-fishing skiff.   Travis's high school principal let him skip school to become a fly fishing guide.   As an early pioneer of Bahamian fly fishing 58 years ago, Percy was the only guide around who would take fly anglers fishing.  With over 100 years of experience between them, our guests share tips on big fish behavior, ideal conditions, and why the Berry Islands can be a demanding place to fish, in a good way.
