This week on The Denouement Podcast, Josh and Mpona are looking at the final episode of GIRI/HAJI on Netflix.

On the one hand it’s a story about the Yakuza v London gangsters, gun battles and shady detectives. But it’s also about duty, shame, and the melancholy of the big city.

We get into how best to tell women’s stories in a masculine narrative, climactic structuring of a good finale, the joy or recognisable locations, and - of course - interpretive dance routines in noir thrillers.

This week on The Denouement, Josh and Mpona are taking a trip to the town of New Ham to discuss the final episode of series one of The Society on Netflix. 

If you’ve not seen it, imagine a cross between The Lord of the Flies, The Leftovers and Gossip Girl. We will be talking about why its a good thing all the teens in this show have terrible fashion, the conspicuous absence of identity politics in New Ham, the reason why every childbirth scene on TV is exactly the same, and - of course - military coups (the ‘p’ is not silent).

New time, we will be watching Giri/Haji - the finest ever British-Japanese Detective drama - available to stream on Netflix.

This week, script editors Josh and Mpona discuss the final episode of SHOWTRIAL series 1 on the BBC.

Starring Celine Buckens as Talitha, the privileged student on trial for the murder of her classmate, and Tracy Ifeachor as Cleo, her cool duty lawyer, this show looks in detail at the processes and fallibilities in the British criminal and legal systems.

What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?

This week, Mpona and Josh discuss MR & MRS SMITH on Prime Video.

Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, this series is (kinda) based on the 2005 Brangelina movie. John and Jane Smith are two lonely strangers, placed in an arranged marriage and tasked with high-risk missions by a mysterious entity known only as “hihi”.

We will discuss how the final episode balances the whackiness of the spy world with a grounded relationsip story, the potential for a second series, and - of course - that beautiful New York brownstone.

Plus, we have thoughts on the casting of Paul Dano as "Hot Neighbor".

This week, script editors Mpona and Josh discuss the final episode of TRUELOVE on Channel 4.

If someone you cared about asked you to help them end their life, could you do it?

This brilliantly written and dazzlingly cast drama follows five friends in their 70s who make an assisted suicide pact. But this intended act of kindness is murder in the eyes of the law.

How far will ex-detective Phil and ex-soldier Ken (who also happen to be ex-lovers) go in the name of true love?

Next time on The Denouement we will be watching Mr & Mrs Smith on Prime.

For our first episode of season two of The Denouement, Josh and Mpona are discussing a biggie: the final episode of season one of The Leftovers on HBO and Now.

Three years after an unexplained phenomenon called "the sudden departure" where 2% of the world's population vanished into thin air, the town of Mapleton, New York, and their beleaguered police chief, Kevin Garvey, struggle to hold it all together.

This discussion has been a long time coming - it's one of Josh's all time faves, and this podcast was the perfect excuse to make Mpona (and all of you!) watch it. We're tackling big themes such as life, death, religion, cults, family and grief.

The story of two South London couples, living on the same street, whose lives are tunred upside down by infidelity. 

What starts off as a sharp zinger of a sitcom evolves into a thoughtful and well-observed show about relationships and sexuality. Plus, it's very, very funny.

The episodes are super short, but there is so much to discuss!

As always, Josh and Mpona get into the details of the plot - so be warned, there will be spoilers.
