| Ep 54: Nouman Ali Khan – How To DEEPLY Connect with the Quran in Ramadan | 24 oct. 2026 | 01:21:37 | |
This week, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan – founder of Bayyinah and world renowned Quran teacher – joins us for a wholesome discussion on how to connect deeply with Allah and the Quran in Ramadan. We explore the importance of quality over quantity, and why learning how to “experience” the Quran is important, not just to read it. Included in this discussion is dealing with our own nafs and bad habits. If Shaytan is chained up in Ramadan, then why do we still sin? Ustadh Nouman then discusses some incredibly exciting projects happening at Bayyinah, including grand visions for Arabic and Quranic education. These begin with the launch of the new ‘Revealed’ app – a mushaf experience with Ustadh’s own commentary and Q&A featured embedded at your fingertips. Things then get emotional at the end. Usman puts Ustadh Nouman on the spot with some spontaneous Q&A using the Reflection Deck from our friends at towards.faith Cut the Small Talk & Get Deep with the Reflection Deck by Towards FaithAs you’ll notice on our podcast show, we’ve recently began introducing a deep reflection round at the end of our discussions. | Ep 49: Supercharge Your Spirituality with a Morning & Evening Routine – Shahbaz Mirza (Towards Faith) | 26 janv. 2022 | 01:04:31
Discover How the New Faith & Focus Morning and Evening Journal Can Supercharge Your Spiritual Productivity
Shahbaz Mirza, founder of Towards Faith (formerly Ramadan Legacy), joins us for a third time on the show to share details of the new Faith & Focus Morning and Evening Journal – a daily system for being and doing. In this episode, Shahbaz and Usman catch up on the latest developments within the Towards Faith brand, and dive deep into the world or productivity, daily routines, and how strugglers and seekers can best utilise their time for maximum spiritual self-development. With an overwhelming amount of self-help content on the internet and every guru pointing you towards their latest productivity hack, one glaring issue is that most of these are not centred around God and a faith-based mindset. Sure, they may be useful for planning your day and motivating you to check off the tasks on your to-do list, but where does your daily worship fit into this? What about your five prayers, your Qur’an recitation, your dhikr (remembrance), your personal character building, your intentions, and other spiritual activities? Between the morning yoga and the mid-day greens smoothie, do these mainstream methods provide any real systems for incorporating Islam into your day and improving your relationship with Allah? That’s exactly what we discuss in this episode, and explore how this new product has been designed to be a simple, yet powerful tool for busy Muslims who want to be more, whilst doing more at the same time. Stay tuned until the last portion of the episode to watch Shahbaz and Usman spontaneously play the Reflection Deck game together. Things get very deep! WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

| EP 48: How to Access Authentic Islamic Knowledge in a Digital Age – Shaykh Ruzwan Mohammed | 14 sept. 2021 | 01:16:31 | |
Can Online Islamic Courses Ever Replace Traditional Studying?
This week we’re joined by Shaykh Ruzwan Mohammed – co-founder, author and educational director of the iSyllabus Islamic studies course. In this episode, Shaykh Ruzwan and Usman have an interesting discussion on the digital era and the shift from traditional face-to-face Islamic learning into an online environment. Social media and the internet in general can have it pros and cons, however in times like today when we’re forced to adopt online learning during a global pandemic, the shift from the traditional classroom to a digital one has quickly become a necessity and educational institutions have been forced to adapt. For those previously unable to access their favourite teachers in person, this has only brought about a positive shift in the way they learn their Deen. However, some argue that online courses can never replace the benefits that face-to-face experiences provide. Having authored and taught the widely popular iSyllabus Islamic Studies programme in the UK over the last decade, Shaykh Ruzwan and his team have recently made the shift to online learning and reimagined the process to ensure their students study the most holistic, in-depth and logically progressive curriculum possible, whilst doing their best to mitigate any missing aspects of the in-class experience. | EP 47: Unlock the Power of Du’a with Your Mindset – feat. Zahra Aljabri | 17 mars 2021 | 01:26:01
Is Your Attitude Towards Allah and Your Du’as Holding You Back?
This week we’re joined by spiritual mindset coach and founder of Practical Muslim – Zahra Aljabri – to bring a fresh perspective to the topic of du’a (supplication) and our mindset towards Allah, our life goals, and how all of these intertwine to fulfil an important part of a Muslim’s life. Growing up, perhaps your experiences with du’a so far have been of a transactional nature, i.e. “I will only get X from Allah if I first do Y”, or “I don’t deserve X from Allah because I did Y, and therefore there’s no point in asking from Him”. This approach to our relationship with Allah is deeply flawed, as in reality, we are comparing the Mercy and Bounty of Allah to that of human beings, which of course isn’t true. Unlike our relationship with family, friends and colleagues, Allah does not operate on the “I will only give you something if you give Me something first” condition. Similarly, many of us have grown up adopting the mindset that as Muslims, we are “not allowed” to ask for too much when making du’a to Allah, or that we should not strive for “too much” in this dunya, and therefore we should only ask for the absolute bare minimum. This is in stark contrast to the behaviour and mindset of the greatest people to walk on earth – i.e. the Prophets themselves (may peace be upon them all) – the stories and du’as of whom Allah describes in the Qur’an. In this episode, Zahra helps us break down the myth that we are not worthy of more, and shares practical tips on how to shift our mindsets so that we are in a better position to ask Allah, and as a result, develop a much deeper, closer relationship with our Lord. Harsh Realities of Social Media and its Effect on Our Spirituality
In this episode we’re joined by Omar Usman, author of the new book Fiqh of Social Media: Timeless Islamic Principles for Navigating the Digital Age and current Executive Director of Muslim Matters. Having observed the evolution of social media as a tool for socialising, learning and entertainment, among other things, Omar has also identified key issues that specifically affect Muslims with respect to their Islamic education, their character and conduct, and how their use of social media can impact their overall spiritual development. Without a doubt social media has its benefits, but if misused, can have seriously negative impacts upon a person both spiritually and mentally. As Muslims, we believe that Islam contains the most perfect guidance for all of mankind to follow. How do we implement that timeless advice in times that no human has ever experienced? That is the focus of the Fiqh of Social Media. | EP 45: Back to Basics – The 5 Pillars of Islam for RE-New Muslims feat. Shaykh Abdullah Oduro | 17 déc. 2020 | 01:08:31
Rediscover the Foundational Principles of Your Deen
In this episode we’re joined by Shaykh Abdullah Oduro from Yaqeen Institute to go ‘back to basics’ and discuss the 5 pillars of Islam; what they they, why they’re important, the wisdom behind them, and the significant role they play in giving our lives structure and balance as Muslims and believers of Allah. Rather than simply explaining the 5 pillars again, which Shaykh Abdullah did excellently in his Yaqeen series ‘5 Pillars Made Plain (which we HIGHLY recommend!), we discuss how both new Musims and RE-new Muslims (i.e. those born into Islam who are rediscovering their foundational beliefs) should interact with these pillars to ensure their faith in Allah is strong, and they have a complete understanding of their purpose in this life. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
1. Shahada (the testimony of faith) 2. Salat (prayer) 3. Zakat (alms giving) 4. Sawm (fasting) 5. Hajj (pilgrimage) Whether you were born to a Muslim family and are rediscovering faith, or you are a new Muslim who has recently accepted Islam, how can you build a strong connection with your new way of life? First step: begin with the basics. In this series, Sh. Abdullah Oduro walks us through the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, and “why” of the 5 foundational pillars of Islam. This series is not just for new and renewed Muslims—it is also a vital resource for convert coaches and Imams to use in their work. | EP 44: Covid-19 Through the Lens of Spirituality – Shaykh Ruzwan Mohammed | 22 oct. 2020 | 01:05:31
The Believer’s Mindset During Times of Hardship
This week we’re joined by Shaykh Ruzwan Mohammed – co-founder, author and educational director of the iSyllabus Islamic studies course. In this episode we discuss the believer’s mindset during times of hardship and uncertainty, how the nafs (self) is affected, and what we must do to maintain a strong connection with Allah (swt) during this time. The coronavirus pandemic has affected us in many ways, but perhaps most importantly, it’s had negative implications on our overall spiritual health as Muslims. We’ve seen a lack of motivation, personal struggles with worship, and a deep yearning to rekindle the sense of belonging and spiritual enlightenment we experience together as a community. Is this to be expected given the current circumstances, or do we as believers need to shift our ways of thinking and how we navigate this test? Shaykh Ruzwan provides some powerful advice regarding this during the episode, and covers not only how we as a community can overcome this, but what we as individuals should be doing personally to ensure our ‘spiritual tank’ remains full. | EP 40: Are We Doing Enough for the Muslim Youth? (Powerful Advice) – Imam Siraj Wahhaj | 05 avr. 2020 | 00:35:03
In this episode we’re joined by the legendary Imam Siraj Wahhaj from Brooklyn, New York, who shares some powerful advice for our Muslim communities and discusses the struggles faced by our youth. We asked him what he would do if he was growing up again in today’s world as a young Muslim, given everything going on in society and the challenges our youth are facing. Imam Siraj shares 22 minutes of pure wisdom and insights from over 40 years of experience and service among the Muslim community. What You’ll Learn
Born and raised in New York, he became a Sunday school teacher as at a young age, then later went to Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) where he studied biology education. In 1969 he joined the Nation of Islam and was taught under Louis Farrakhan at the height of the NOI’s anti-Malcolm X rhetoric. He became a Sunni Muslim after the death of Elijah Muhammad in 1975 and Muhammad’s son Warith Deen Mohammed took over and reorganized the organization, urging members to come to orthodox Islam. Kearse then changed his name to Siraj Wahhaj. He was chosen to study Islam at the Umm al-Qura university of Mecca in 1978. He also briefly taught a course in Islamic studies at Howard University. In 1981 he started his own mosque, Masijd ul-Taqwa, in a friend’s apartment in Brooklyn. Although it originally started out with only 25 people, today it is well-known. In 1988 he led his community in an anti-drug patrol in which they staked out drug houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the cold of winter for 40 days and nights, forcing the closure of 15 drug houses. This effort received high praise from the New York City Police Department and the media. Since that time, Siraj has been active in many Islamic organizations. He has been vice president of the Islamic Society of North America since 1997 and has served on the Majlis al Shura, a consultative council of Islamic scholars, since 1987. He is a member of the Board of Advisors for the American Muslim Council and has also served on the national board of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Siraj is a prolific speaker in America. He makes many appearances at major North American Muslim conventions, and numerous forums and lectures in New England. His audio and video lectures are also popular in America’s Muslim community. He is known to encourage Muslims to be God-fearing, enjoin good and forbid evil, practice regular charity, stay away from drugs, abstain from pre-marital relations, and other issues as well. He has also appeared on several national television talk shows and has had interviews with several media outlets. | EP 38: Why I Stopped Listening to Music – feat. Nilly Naseer-Farooqui | 16 déc. 2019 | 00:50:29
Let’s be real: we all have our vices, and whether or not we’d like to admit, it’s inevitable that we often engage in habits or activities that aren’t so great for our spiritual wellbeing. Whether we’re stuck in a cycle of sin, struggling with performing certain acts of worship, or dealing with personal insecurities and identity issues, we all travel a unique path on our journey towards Allah (swt). On that journey, there comes a time when we begin to realise which of our behaviours draw us nearer to Allah (swt) and which of them take us further away. Of course, the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) teaches us what to avoid and what to strive for, but for the majority of us, unless we experience them for ourselves we won’t truly digest the lessons that we’ve been taught from a young age. In this episode, we’re joined by TEDx speaker, peak performance specialist and founder of Words Behind a Smile – sister Nilly Naseer-Farooqui – who gets real about her struggles with quitting music, dancing, and other habits that were holding her back from feeling spiritually awake and close to Allah (swt). (Heads up! We don’t discuss whether or not music is technically ‘halal or haram’ in Islam, but rather the negative impact that it had on Nilly, why she quit, and the positive changes she noticed in her life once she quit.) WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
What others think of you is none of your business. Today’s Ayah of the Day“… But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. | EP 37: Allah’s Love for His Servants – feat. Youssra Kamel Kandil | 21 nov. 2019 | 00:49:19
Our Relationship with Allah (swt)
By far the most important love, the deepest connection and the most protected relationship in our lives should be that between us and our Lord – Allah (swt). As Muslims, the very foundation of our belief is that Allah (swt) – our God – is One. He created us, He has sustained us, He has control over every aspect of our life, and one day, to Him we will return. As Muslims created by Allah (swt), our purpose is to worship Him. However, there are times in life when inevitably our thoughts about Allah (swt), our trust in Him and our hope in His love can all be a little bit shaky. Whether we experience trauma, neglect our worship, or feel too overburdened by our sins, it’s natural to feel that maybe Allah (swt) doesn’t love us as much anymore, or that we are undeserving of His blessings. For some of us, the only relationship we have with Allah (swt) is that of a servant who must worship and stay away from lots of fun things, “or else! Jahannam!”. With this mindset, however, we lose sight of just how great Allah’s (swt) love for us truly is, and His desire to draw us nearer to Him. To further discuss our relationship with Allah (swt) and His deep love for us, we’re joined in this episode by sister Youssra Kamel Kandil. If you’re active on social media, it’s most likely you will have seen some of Youssra’s heartwarming and inspiring reminders – some of which have gone viral and amassed millions of views. Just like in her reminders, this podcast is filled with some really important reminders and practical tips on how we can become closer to our Lord and strengthen our faith. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
“And be patient, [O Muhammad], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes. And exalt [ Allah ] with praise of your Lord when you arise.” [52:48] https://deenspiration.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Surah-at-Tur-verse-48-Usman-Majid-Deenspiration.mp3 CONNECT WITH YOUSSRA ONLINE

Part 1 – Quranic Transformations and Goal Setting
You may have heard people using the terms ‘living a Quranic or Islamic lifestyle’, but what does that really mean? When our mother A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) described the Prophet’s (pbuh) character as being the embodiment of the Quran [Sahih Muslim], what comes to mind? Do you envision a man who was only concerned with rulings of halal and haram, do’s and don’ts, or someone whose entire being emanated the light of the Quran and beautified every living being that passed his way? Why is it that although some people have memorised the entire Quran, their character, actions and lifestyle all contradict its teachings? Why do we still feel uneasy around them? What’s the missing piece here? In Part 1 of this two-part podcast, we’re joined by Ustadh Wisam Sharieff who shares with us an incredible system for Quranic Transformation. By combining self-development techniques (mind, body and soul) with supplications from the Quran, as well as a strategic goal setting framework, Ustadh Wisam gives you the tools that will empower you to develop a complete ‘Quranic Lifestyle’ that is unique to you. | EP 31: The Role of Muslim Women in Islam & Society (feat Alima Ashfaq & Hafiz Zahid) | 04 mai 2019 | 00:47:54
In this episode we’re joined by teacher, speaker, author and recently the founder of the Muslimah’s Renaissance, Ustadha Alima Ashfaq and her husband, Hafiz Zahid Minhas. With a passion for reviving a balanced narrative on the role of Muslim women, Ustadha Alima launched the Muslimah’s Renaissance – a movement to rediscover the spirit of the prophetic and Qur’anic narrative in respect to gender. Its ethos believes that if we cultivate communities where men and women are allies, we can decrease the rates of domestic violence, youth related crimes and gender based violence. This is based on the verse: “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” Sūrah At-Tawbah, 9:71 The project also aims to empower men to appreciate their roles and play a role in nurturing a healthy society with women as their allies in the truest sense; as an empowered, educated and spiritually aware woman can have a positive impact in society. WHAT YOU’LL LEARNIn this episode, we cover the following:
The project aims to serve the community with beneficial conferences and help reputable charities to fundraise for their aid projects. | EP 30: Healing with Words – The Art of Giving Advice (feat. Dear Chereen) | 06 janv. 2019 | 00:50:59
In this episode, we’re joined by therapist and life-coach, Chereen, from the popular Dear Chereen advice column. Dear Chereen is an online safe space, known for being a haven for healing, inspiration, and support through their written work and regular Q&A sessions. Having observed Chereen and her team conduct regular Q&A’s on their Instagram page, we wanted to speak with her to dig deeper into the art of giving advice; the do’s and don’ts, the who’s, what’s and the why’s. As Muslims, and as humans, we are social beings by our very nature. We seek acceptance, love, comfort and value time with others. Naturally, we also experience periods of hardship and sorrow, and can find ourselves in need to sharing our feelings with others. While on the receiving end, how do we ensure that we’re providing the best support we can and truly remain sincere? WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

OCD – obsessive compulsive disorder – is a common anxiety disorder which can cause unwanted, uncontrollable thoughts, doubts and behaviours.
In the context of religion and practising daily worship, struggling with OCD can become an experience much too overburdening for an individual, and create a cycle of deep frustration, guilt, doubt, and much more. In this deeply insightful podcast episode, we’re joined by sister Meanha from Inspirited Minds – a charity dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding Mental Health – particularly within Muslim communities – and providing an assortment of resources for those who wish to learn more, or need personal support. | EP 28: Stop Feeling Guilty Over Your Lack of Worship | 31 oct. 2018 | 00:26:14
Good Intentions, Guilty Feelings & Numerous Rewards
This week’s episode is one that we’re sure so many of us can relate to. Have you ever felt sad, frustrated or hopeless when you’re unable to do as many good deeds as you’d like to? Maybe you think that you’re not a good enough Muslim for Allah to love you, or for you to attain Paradise? For many of us, this thought often remains at the back of our minds, and as time goes on we become more and more frustrated that we simply aren’t doing as much as we’re “supposed to” with regards to our worship. Without doubt, performing numerous good deeds in our lifetime is a goal that all Muslims should aim for. And yes, some deeds merit greater rewards and blessings than others, and of those, the Prophet (pbuh) did specify a number in order to attain those rewards. Striving for Allah’s sake is, after all, a foundation of our Deen However, by convincing ourselves that our worship – in the eyes of Allah – is measured only by its quantity, we are doing ourselves a great disservice. In fact, this is a misunderstanding on our part. We bypass the fact that Allah (swt) looks at our intentions and sincerest efforts, even if those intentions weren’t able to flourish into great actions. We forget the numerous examples in the Quran and Sunnah which points to actions which, in our eyes may seem small, but were rewarded multi-fold by Allah (swt). We forget that the great companion Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (ra), simply because he forgave everyone and removed any ounce of resentment towards others in his heart before sleeping every night. We forget the prostitute who was forgiven by Allah (swt) because she gave water to a thirsty dog. As numerous as these examples may be we still remain guilty that, for whatever genuine reason, we cannot perform a good deeds that we planned to do. It really pulls down our spirits, and for some of us who remain busy around the clock, it becomes inevitable that we give up completely. What Worship Looks LikeThis week’s podcast episode was inspired by the following Facebook status by Ustadha Maryam Amir. Maryam Amir shares with us what being close to Allah truly looks like This status really hits home, and draws our attention to the fact that even our mundane, everyday duties can earn us an incredible amount of rewards. RELATED EPISODE: Intention Hacking – Turn Everyday Activities into an Act of Worship Quality Over QuantityDuring this episode, we also share a heartfelt blog post written by sister Amsal Rahim, in which she describes her deep sense if remorse after being unable to worship as she’d intended during her stay in Madinah, in Ramadan. After narrated her experience and sharing an honest reflection, Amsal concluded by beautifully reminding us that no deed is overlooked by Allah (swt), even the smallest ones. Also in This EpisodeDuring this week’s show we also shared stories submitted by you – our listeners – on our Instagram Page. These stories show us that we all struggle to keep up, and we all want to do more for Allah (swt). | EP 27: Social Media & Its Effects on Spirituality – feat. Omar Usman | 19 oct. 2018 | 01:00:48
For many of us, social media makes up a large part of our lives. We spend countless hours scrolling through our apps, consuming information (some of which we shouldn’t be!), and can often find ourselves getting a little too carried away at times. It’s no secret that improper use of social media can cause an inability to focus, a lack of productivity, a huge amount of wasted time, potential mental health issues, among many other things. On the flip side, social media can also benefit us in a multitude of ways. So, how do we find the balance? In this episode, we’re joined by Omar Usman – founder of the Fiqh of Social Media – who dives deep with us into the discussion of creating a healthy use of social media in our lives. In particular, we discuss how an improper use of social media may have a negative effect on our worship and spirituality. What You’ll Learn
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children – like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion. [Qur’an – 57:20] Useful Links and Resources

As young students and professionals, many of us spend much of our time searching the internet for the secrets to success. What makes billionaires so successful? What are their routines? Their habits? | EP 21: Quran Memorisation – Practical Tips & Motivation feat. Shaykh Dr. Suleiman Hani | 26 mars 2018 | 00:47:19
The memorisation of the Quran has taken place ever since its very first revelation, and continues to remain as one of the most preserved traditions in the Muslim world. We all know of the immense virtues and rewards associated with memorising the Book of Allah (swt), however for most of us, the thought of embarking on a long, difficult and highly demanding journey seems almost impossible considering our daily hustle and bustle. Or at least that’s what we think! There’s a common misconception that unless you begin memorising at a young age – during your ‘prime years’ – your chances of memorising the Quran are very slim. Similarly, many of us think that unless we dedicate hours upon hours and complete multiple pages of Hifdh per week, there’s no point in trying to become a Hafidh. As we’ll learn in this episode, this couldn’t be further from the truth! We’re joined in this episode by Shaykh Suleiman Hani who is the author of the renowned book ‘114 Tips to Help You Finally Memorize the Quran’ – a book which has been years in the making and has been praised by the likes of Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan, Imam Omar Suleiman, Dr. Yasir Qadhi and many others. Shaykh Suleiman provides some highly practical tips on how to begin your journey of Quran memorisation, as well as some much needed motivational and inspiring stories that will, InshaAllah, leave you with no excuses to begin! “Many Muslims have the earnest desire to memorize as much of the Quran as possible but don’t even know where to begin. It’s refreshing to see Imam Suleiman’s effort in this book to facilitate that journey. So many of us know the value of bringing the Quran into our lives and works like these give us realistic ways of making that happen. A must-have for every Muslim household.” – Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan “This well-researched book will surely become a standard reference in its field for years to come.” – Dr. Yasir Qadhi What you’ll learn in this episode:

| EP 20: Being a Light in Times of Darkness (feat. Heraa Hashmi) | 07 janv. 2018 | 00:39:57 | |
Want to listen to the audio version instead? Click the play button below:
For many Muslims living in the West, it has become harder than ever to push a positive narrative of Islam amidst the clutter of media propaganda, conflicting viewpoints, and floods of emotional outrage following the tragic incidents occurring around the world in the name of religion. While some may have an agenda to portray Islam in the most negative light possible, the vast majority of people are simply confused, unsure who or what to believe. With conflicts rising, frustrations growing and deep misunderstandings of our faith becoming widespread, how can Muslims act as beacons of light for society? How do we remain confident as Muslims, and instead of apologising for the acts of a few, build strong bonds and dialogue with others to exemplify and promote the true nature of our beautiful Deen? In this episode, we’re joined by the young and bright Heraa Hashmi, a 19 year-old molecular biology student who made headlines and inspired thousands after her brilliant response to one particular student in her history class. When her classmate claimed that Muslims don’t openly condemn acts of violence in the name of religion, Heraa became frustrated by the idea that the acts of just a few could be used to demonise an entire group of people. Determined to prove him wrong, Heraa began researching for an answer, only to find that there were no comprehensive resources detailing the vast number of mainstream Muslim responses to these acts of violence. Three weeks later, Heraa had produced a 700+ Google doc – references and all – listing every incident she could find in which a Muslim condemned an act of violence carried out in the name of religion. After her tweet went viral, Heraa caught the eyes of the likes of Teen Vogue, The Guardian, and head of Yaqeen Institute, Imam Omar Suleiman. Before she knew it, Heraa was sharing her story on stage in front of thousands of Muslims at the ICNA-MAS conference, and soon after found herself enjoying an eventful dinner with the daughters of the late Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X (may Allah have mercy on their souls) after winning the first ever ‘Muhammad Ali Confident Muslim Award’. | EP 19: Islamic Societies & The Student Life Balance (feat. Zara Mohammed, Sajjad Khan & Naairah Aftab) | 13 nov. 2017 | 00:51:54
Student Islamic societies / associations, for many Muslims, are the backbone of their University experience. During the life-changing journey through higher education, we undergo an experience of learning, self-discovery and spiritual development, and being involved in an Islamic society (ISOC) can provide a fantastic opportunity to dramatically enhance these experiences.
From annual charity events to weekly spiritual circles, social gatherings, Islamic lectures, campus-wide campaigns and much more, there’s no doubt that the ISOC experience creates life-long friendships, builds tremendous skills and an array of fond memories. The excitement and sense of belonging that comes with participation in an ISOC can also, however, lead to one losing the ability to balance between their studies and extra-curricular duties. Quite often this can cause undue stress, a lack of prioritisation, the neglect of family and friends, and an internal battle between maintaining a social identity, being involved in Da’wah work, and actually succeeding at University. How do we make the most of the ISOC experience whilst ensuring that we maintaining a healthy student-life balance, grow and self-develop as Muslims, and ultimately succeed as University students? In this episode, we’re joined by Zara Mohammed, Sajjad Khan, Naairah Aftab and podcast host Usman Majid – a panel with a plethora of ISOC experience – who discuss this in depth and provide advice to the Muslim students across the globe. What you’ll learn in this episode:
Today’s Ayah of the Day is Surah Al-Maa’idah, Verse 35. Organisations / Societies Mentioned in the Show:

| EP 18: Sadness, Anxiety & Islam (feat. Hafsa) | 01 nov. 2017 | 01:03:54 | |
As human beings, we experience a variety of powerful emotions in our every day lives. Some bring us pleasure, others confuse us, and many are extremely difficult to bare.
For so many of us, emotions like sadness, anxiety and depression are a part of our lives, dictating the quality of our lives from how we feel, to how we act around others, and how we feel about ourselves. Is it okay to feel these emotions, or should we feel bad for doing so? Isn’t this a sign of having a lack of faith? Unfortunately in many communities – including the Muslim community – there can be somewhat of a stigma attached to this subject, making it extra difficult for those experiencing these strong feelings of pain, sadness and anxiety to reach out for help. In fear of being shamed or labelled as having “low Iman”, the same people suffer in silence and sometimes can’t escape. What does Islam really say about these emotions, and how do we go about managing them? In this episode, we’re joined by sister Hafsa who shares her journey with some of these emotions, and provides us with some powerful advice and direction on how to accept one’s self and seek help. What you’ll learn in this episode:

| EP 17: Mental Health – An Islamic Perspective (feat. Shaykh Abdul Hameed) | 10 oct. 2017 | 00:59:06 | |
The vast majority of us will, at some point in our lives, deal with a mental health problem whether we realise it not, or even like to admit. The topic itself is vast, as are the various conditions, diagnoses and treatments, but for many, finding the right answers can be difficult. We hope to clear the air and educate our community in this episode with Shaykh Abdul Hameed. It’s unfortunate that within the Muslim community, mental health can often times be somewhat of a ‘taboo’ subject, with many Muslims being ignorant on the subject due to lack of education or cultural ignorance. Some Muslims even interpret mental illnesses as a weakness of faith, and advise those who are vulnerable to simply pray more, fear Allah, or completely forget about their situations. This extremely dangerous approach can lead to many people feeling isolated, lost, confused, and may eventually lead to self harm and even death (e.g. death by suicide). What is the correct approach to mental health, and how do we as Muslims approach the topic while conforming to our Islamic principles? What you’ll learn in this episode:
1) what should somebody do if they have suicidal thoughts, or are harming themselves? 2) One way I used to cope with low moods and energy was masturbation. I know this is wrong, and I felt guilty. I started to masturbate instead of self harm. How do you deal with these addictions and dependencies until you can get real help? 3) I’m a 19 year old Muslims girl. There are days when I feel good about myself, but then there are times when I become some sort of evil person. My depression makes me act inappropriately with parents, siblings and friends. What do I do? 4) There’s a war going on in my mind all of the time. It feels like there’s no hidayah at all. Help! 5) Is yoga halal (for healing and exercise?) | EP 16: Spiritual Steroids – The Dangers of Being Overzealous in Faith (feat. Shaykh Abdul Hameed) | 02 oct. 2017 | 00:54:18
The spiritual journey is one that spans our entire lives; we learn, we discover ourselves, we make mistakes, and we grow from them. Along the way, we naturally experience our ups and downs as we journey towards spiritual bliss and closeness to Allah (swt).
Although every person’s experiences are different, for young “coming of age” Muslims, there seems to be a common trend as they first discover their passion for the Deen. When the first taste of the sweetness of Iman enters the heart, one usually goes all out; they remove all the haram from their lives, they change their clothes and the way they speak, they change their friend groups, and more often than not, they end up burdening themselves with more than they can handle. If a slow, balanced approach to the Deen isn’t adopted at this early stage, the dangers of falling into somewhat of an identity crisis or developing unhealthy personality and character traits can become inevitable. Not only can this affect the individual themselves, but it can negatively impact their relationship with those around them. Does the following sound familiar? A young and excited Muslim first discovers their deep passion for the Deen, and then:
All of these are fantastic, and greatly rewarding. But… they may also:
We all know somebody like this, or rather, may even have been like this once ourselves. You may even be reading this right now and be thinking “Uh oh… sounds like me!” Being super excited and deeply passionate about the Deen when one first becomes practicing is a wonderful feeling, and yes, one should aim to better themselves in every way possible. However, setting a standard this high from the get go can soon become burdensome, and inevitably, an individual may experience a major “crash” with their Iman. Once they are no longer able to uphold these standards, they feel like a lost cause, that their Iman is now gone, and a deep spiritual depression and emptiness takes over their hearts. This is where the term “spiritual steroids” stems from. Just like anabolic steroids cause a massive surge in muscle growth at a rapid rate, as soon as the bodybuilder stops them, the body deflates and the muscle can become lost. Similarly, if one tries to cheat their spiritual development and fast track their progress, their Iman may also experience deflation. How do we avoid this from happening, and how should one approach the Deen in a healthy and balanced manner so as to keep a consistent and steadily growing level of Iman? Join us in this podcast episode with Shaykh Abdul Hameed where he discusses this issue and provides his knowledge, wisdom and advice to those going through, or about to go through this stage of their lives. What you’ll learn:
If you have a question for Shaykh or want to share your story / tip on how to keep a balanced approach to the Deen, especially when first getting started, leave a comment below.

| EP 15: Intention Hacking – Turn Everyday Actions Into Worship | 15 août 2017 | 00:19:42 | |
Intentions play an important role in our everyday lives as Muslims. In Islam, we are taught that our intentions can determine whether or not our deeds will be accepted by Allah ﷻ, and moreover, how little or how much we’ll be rewarded for those deeds (or even punished). In part of a famous Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we’re taught that: “Actions are judged by their intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to their intention”[Bukhari, Muslim] This Hadith is incredibly important, and teaches us that if our intentions are good, we shall receive good. If they are bad, we may potentially fall into sin. The purer we make our intentions when doing a good deed, the more Allah ﷻ will reward us. When we think of perfecting our intentions, we typically do so within the context of our daily acts of worship: prayer, dhikr, reciting the Qur’an, and a multitude of other good deeds we can perform. For example, we know that somebody who prays just because they ‘have to’ vs somebody who does so purely for the love of Allah ﷻ and to draw nearer to Him, are not equal in the rewards they’ll receive. No doubt, merely fulfilling our obligations because we ‘have to’ will still earn us rewards, but not nearly as much as compared to the latter example. Is it possible, therefore, to apply the same logic with regards to intentions to the other mundane acts we perform everyday, such as eating, sleeping, studying, going to work, etc.? The answer is YES, and that’s exactly what you’ll learn in this episode. What you’ll learn:
For this episode, we’ve included a free bonus download – an intention hacking cheat sheet that contains:

Procrastination.
It’s something we’re all guilty of. Perhaps some of us put of doing the things we need to do because we’re simply just too lazy to do them, whilst other times there are much deeper reasons as to why we hold ourselves back. What if the real reason we procrastinated was because of FEAR; because instead of simply being lazy, we’re genuinely scared of a particular outcome? In this episode, we’re joined by Sahar Nawaz Shaikh who dives deep into this notion and shares some tips on how to battle the inner fears that hold us back from truly excelling in life. Every time you put your head in sujood, a million doors open. Then it’s your choice to walk through them or just stay there. What you’ll learn:In this episode, we cover:

In Episode 8 of the Deenspiration podcast show, Usman is joined by the wonderful Hamza Fletcher who shares somes highlights from his popular ‘7 Habits of the Highly Effective Muslim’ workshop which he has delivered across the UK. This episode is full of take-home gems and practical tips for kick-starting our own journey of self development, both spiritually and materialistically. Some of the gems from the show have been highlighted below as ‘tweetables’ – simply click to tweet them on your page. Go on, try it on this one below: “The only way we can change is THROUGH Allah, and the only reason we should change is FOR Allah.” Below are some (edited) notes from Hamza – those he uses during his presentations. You’ll find some gems in here that may not have been highlighted in the episode. However, be sure to listen to the full show for a much more in depth explanation as there will also be points mentioned in there that haven’t been noted in these show notes. (Oh, and you’ll get to hear Hamza beatboxing!). HEADS UP! You can find more of Hamza’s content that dives deeper into the 7 habits by clicking here)
Outcome is with Allah , Efforts are with ourselves
What are your dreams? Do you have goals? Almost all of our thinking is controlled by the questions we ask ourselves. We start by asking ourselves: ‘Where do I want to be in 5 years time? Or even 1 year?’ Some people don’t like this question and respond with: “Don’t ask me! I’m spontaneous, I don’t like schedules or rigid plans..” Practical step 1:
People are often so worried about not knowing exactly what to do, and this can prevent them from getting started. Or often times they want to do it perfectly, that they never actually get on with it. Remember – Experience is your best teacher! Bad example of Goal: “I want to make money” Good example of goal “I intend to make £1000 in exactly 1 months time” Practical step 2 – ‘Chunking’ IF that doesn’t work , break it down even more. A beautiful piece of Advice given to me by Ustadh Adam Kelwick, Liverpool. “If you wish to gain a particular quality in life, then find someone who has that quality and spend time with them” Another Question to ask yourself: Why do you want that goal? When you ask that question and dig deep, you get interesting answers.. Find a reason that’s GREATER than yourself. You’ll move mountains, metaphorically. Make this reason fun, exciting, creative! Something that’ll drive you and motivate you to the core. When you do it for others, you can save lives, raise money, educate, and many others great things. Most important, attach this goal to ultimately pleasing Allah. (this also makes sure the goal is halal!) Tip: Be around people who have the same types of intentions. This will empower you further. Intentions When you intentions are pure, our efforts will be filled with Barakah. With barakah, we get MORE done and achieve amazing things. Example: Eating We can eat to simply enjoy the taste. And this is permissible. Or we can eat with the intention of nourishing ourself so that we can work more and earn a halal living, repair our bodies, worship better and longer, etc. This intention has already quadroopled! Practical tip 3 – constantly FEED your mind A strong psychology will pull you through when the mechanics/logistics are frustrating or boring. You might ask: ‘But Why? I like chilling all day, watching TV, playing games, going out with friends and eating good food!’ Note: chilling and enjoying ourselves is fine, but it’s about the balance. When we have our priorities sorted, and are working hard, then chilling has its purpose! Leisure time is also enjoyed a lot more when it’s followed by a marathon of working REALLY hard! Progress equals happiness. Once you start tasting the fruits of your efforts, and cross that border of what you thought you couldn’t achieve, your brain says “YEAH! … Now what else can I do?” #SnowballEffect Even if the effort may seem small, just do it! Small progress is still progress. “Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions” When you’ve got some clarity, have set the deadlines, have learned the process of chunking big tasks into smaller ones, get around good company, and have built compelling reasons for your goals, then:
It’s not our conditions that shape our destiny, but our decisions. Final notes & Summary from Hamza I’d like to make one thing clear. We all have a home. Angry people find a way to be angry, even when life has nothing to be angry about. They always find it. Sad people find a way to be sad. Caring people find a way to care for other people. So one thing you’ve got to identify is: where are you living? What’s your home? What’s your habit? How to change that? Step 1 is to feed your mind. We all know the phrase “You are what you eat” Well, it’s the same for the mind. One of my teachers taught me: “every day stand guard of the door of your mind and feed it something good” Feed your mind every day for 30 minutes, hearing / reading something. Something strong and nutritious for your mind. Step 2 – You’ve got to strengthen that body of yours! Fear is physical, and so is stagnation, numbness, sadness and rage. When you go out and change your body by intense workout, a run, or even an intense walk, and the blood is flowing through you, science has shown that this instantly changes your biochemistry. Now your mind and body are working together. Step 3 – Look at so many of the most influential people: they found a mission that is greater than themselves. Something they wanted to aspire to, that matters more than their own pain. Step 4 – You’ve got to find a role model. Almost everybody finds a role model that makes things real for them. If you get a role model, it becomes real to you. If you make a goal, get a plan, then take massive action. Step 5 – Understand that there’s always someone worse off than you are – I don’t care what you’ve done. I always tell people that the secret to a great life, the secret to living is GIVING! Even if you’ve lost your legs, even if you’ve been through a horrific financial situation, your life can improve, and more importantly, you have a more meaningful life because your life will contribute to the well-being of other people. | EP 6: Walking Dhikr – Turn Every Step Into Worship (Amazing Technique!) | 30 janv. 2017 | 00:22:14
Listen to the Walking Dhikr episode below:
In today’s episode of the Deenspiration podcast show, Usman shares an epic technique called ‘Walking Dhikr’ which allows you to add a WHOLE lot more worship to your day. The great thing about it is that it’s super easy. In fact, if you can walk, you’re half way there!
Yup! If you do any form of walking during the day (which pretty much all of us do!) then you can most definitely implement this technique. How it works Walking Dhikr involves taking your favourite phrase of Dhikr, breaking it down into smaller chunks / syllables, and assigning each chunk to a step. Wait, what?! It sounds weird, but really, it’s easy! When we walk, it creates a little rhythm – a beat. What we’re essentially doing with this technique is following the beat, while reciting the phrase at the same time. When done correctly, both the rhythm of our footsteps and the phrase of Dhikr create a nice flow. It makes taking those steps and walking even more fun and rewarding. Still confused? Listen to the episode above for a full explanation. You’ll be joining in within no time InshaAllah! Did you enjoy the show? | EP 5: Health & Nutrition In Ramadan (feat. Amina Khan) – Diet, Lifestyle & Spirituality. | 05 juil. 2016 | 01:10:15
The Blessed month of Ramadan is most likely your favourite month of the year, and so it should be! It’s the month of the Qur’an, a month full of immense rewards and blessings, a month of forgiveness, a month of community and love, and deep spiritual development. Just amazing! Now, although many of us look forward to using Ramadan to become the best version of ourselves in terms of our Iman, we tend to forget about, or totally neglect the idea of also becoming the best version of ourselves in terms of our health. Believe it or not, many of us get FAT during Ramadan. It’s weird, right? A lot of us are fasting around three quarters of the day, yet at the end of the month when we step on the scale, we notice that we’ve added a few pounds. How is that even possible?! Think about it, what’s the one thing most of us make the mistake of doing in Ramadan? I’ll give you a clue: it happens after Maghrib, usually makes our eyes pop and our mouths water, and usually results in regret a couple of hours later. That’s right, OVER EATING! We usually eat like crazy once Iftar kicks in and ignore the idea of keeping our diets clean and healthy. So much so that it pretty much defeats the purpose of our fast; we’re supposed to be training ourselves to stop being excessive and to let go of our desires, not quadruple how much we indulge in them! There is nothing wrong with enjoying a lovely Iftar with the family of course, or perhaps throwing the odd Iftar party with the homeboys and homegirls, but this is where we should learn to be extra careful. The last thing we want is for our Ramadan experience to be ruined and for our abilities to worship to be weakened because we feel sluggish, tired and unfit to perform our ‘Ibaadah. So… how do you go about learning the do’s and don’ts of nutrition and lifestyle during Ramadan? In this episode of the Deenspiration podcast, Usman is joined by Amina Khan, founder of the epic health and fitness brand Amanah Fitness. Amina covers a whole lot of practical tips and tricks for how to stay in tip-top shape during Ramadan, ensuring that your body feels nice and energetic throughout the long Taraweeh prayer at night, as well as during the long working day.
