Episode 106: Pointe Readiness Assessments for Dancers04 Nov 202500:33:35

Progressing to pointe work has long been considered a rite of passage for many aspiring ballet dancers. However, it does not come without risks. Dancing en pointe increases the forces placed on the foot by up to 12x bodyweight, and if progressed too soon can lead to an increased risk of pain and injury.

Historically, dancers were thought to be ready to start training en pointe at 12 years of age.  However, with advances in dance science, it is now known that there are many complex factors besides chronological age which can help to determine when it is safe for a dancer to progress en pointe.

In this week's podcast episode, I discuss the benefits of having a formal pre-pointe readiness screening assessment, including an update on current research. You'll learn which functional tasks have been validated in the research to have the highest correlation with readiness to progress to pointe work.

Episode 105: Breaking the Binary in Ballet with Anna Morgan28 Oct 202500:49:56

Did you know that despite ballet being predominantly populated by cis gender girls in training settings (92% in the UK), men take up the vast majority of leadership roles (artistic directors, choreographers etc). In this week's podcast episode, I sit down with Anna Morgan to chat about her master's research into gender equity in ballet leadership and training, and what she's learned over the past few years diving into this data. She shares some of the problems that arise when ballet is taught with a rigid, binary structure and ways we can make ballet a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all dancers, regardless of their gender identity.

About Anna Morgan

Anna is an educator, choreographer, adjudicator and researcher, working mainly within ballet. Her choreography has been presented worldwide, with recent work in the USA, France, Puerto Rico and at Sadler’s Wells, London. She has taught for institutions including the Royal Ballet School, Bird College and Performers College, and adjudicates for All England Dance. She also sits on the Advisory Board for the TIRED Movement.

Anna has recently completed the MA course at Rambert School, where her research focuses on gender equity in ballet leadership and training. She has shared this research widely through lectures, digital content and professional development seminars, including as a speaker at the 2025 IADMS Conference in Las Vegas.

Episode 96: Discussing the Royal Ballet School's Recent Announcement26 Aug 202500:29:39

As you may or may not have heard, the Royal Ballet School recently announced changes in the structure to their full time vocational training program. Starting in 2026 they will no longer be accepting students in year 7 (11-12 years old) and in 2027 will follow suit with students in year 8 (12-13 years old).

In this week's podcast episode I discuss these changes and some of the rationale behind them, what this will practically look like for students going forward, and why I think this could be a game changer for the world of vocational dance training.

Episode 95: Preparing for the New Dance Season19 Aug 202500:28:21

The new dance season is fast approaching in most of North America, and on this week's podcast episode I discuss some things to consider as we head into a new season. Every year, we see an increase in injury rates in the first 6 weeks of a new dance year. This is for a variety of reasons, but some of the most common ones are dancers doing too much too soon, dancers who are coming into the season fatigued and under-recovered from not having a proper off-season, and dancers who are dealing with niggling injuries that haven't been fully dealt with previously.

In this episode, we discuss these different scenarios, as well as touch on things we can do to adjust training load to ensure that dancers are gradually progressing into the new season and staying healthy and injury-free.

Episode 94: A Better Way to Teach Flexibility for Dancers12 Aug 202500:25:02

There has (once again?) been a proliferation of posts on social media glorifying unsafe and extreme stretching practices. In this podcast episode I unpack why I think that is, and what we can do to address it.

Traditional flexibility programs for dancers often only focus on passive stretching. In this episode you'll learn my 5-pronged approach to designing a flexibility program which will not only benefit more of your dancers, but do so in a safe way that won't risk injury.

Episode 79: Misconceptions About Turnout in Dance29 Apr 202500:37:12

Episode 103: Clenching, Gripping and Knuckling: what your dancer's feet can tell you14 Oct 202500:35:28

In this podcast episode I recap my recent presentation at the IADMS Annual Conference in Las Vegas, a workshop with longtime friend, mentor and colleague Astrid Sherman.

Comprised of 26 bones, 33 joints and hundreds of muscles, the foot is a complex structure. It functions to support the body, absorb shock, and facilitate movement through locomotion. It can also give us information about how a dancer is moving and functioning. Clenching toes when “pointing the foot” in plantar flexion, gripping the floor in standing and/or knuckling ‘en-pointe’ are common patterns seen in dancer’s that may indicate weakness, muscle imbalances, or deficiencies in technique or training.

Episode 73: The Importance of Flooring in Dance18 Mar 202500:30:35

In dance, we are not able to rely as heavily on footwear to dissipate impact forces, making the flooring surface even more important. In this episode, we explore 'low stiffness' dance flooring (ie sprung floors) and their role in injury risk reduction in dance.

About Jenny
Jenny Accettura is a registered dietician and owner of Centre Stage Nutrition. Jenny’s love for nutrition was sparked after 17 years as a competitive dancer and learning to sustain the unmatched physical demands of dance. When she was dancing, Jenny struggled to know how to properly fuel for performance and like many dancers, worried about losing her dancer body once she retired.  This experience inspired her to become a Dietitian, and help fellow dancers navigate this journey.

As a Registered Dietitian with both clinical and private practice experience, she’s had the opportunity to work with a diverse client population to help them develop personalized and sustainable nutrition plans. More than your average Dietitian, she’s also worked in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, which has provided unique insight into the frameworks that she builds for clients to ensure plans are both sustainable and results-driven.

Episode 66: Dance: is it art or sport?28 Jan 202500:27:32

We discuss how she ended up attracting dancers with hypermobility conditions, as well as her experience working with neurodivergent dancers. We explore challenges that neurodivergent dancers face in traditional studio and training environments, and strategies that teachers, studios and companies can employ to support neurodivergent dancers.

About Jennifer Milner
Jennifer Milner is a certified Pilates trainer who specializes in working with dancers and dance rehabilitation.

As a classically trained ballet dancer, Jennifer danced with several companies across the country, before moving to New York for a career in musical theatre.  After a knee injury ended her successful performing career, she became determined to use her experiences to help other dancers and performers.
