Moshe calms down the Jews after the revelation of G-d.

G-d gives a few more commandments, all related to the objects in the Mishkan/Beis Hamikdash.

G-d tells the Jews 10 Commandments.

Moshe relays G-d's deal to the Jews, and the Jews accept.

After, the Jews negotiate with Moshe regarding how direct their meeting with G-d will be.

The Jews prepare for the revelation of G-d for 3 days.

After 3 days, G-d's glory descends onto Mount Sinai in fire, and the people shudder in fear.

Moshe appoints new leaders as Yisro advised him.

The Jews travel to the foot of Mount Sinai, and G-d gives Moshe a message which he is to deliver to the Jewish people.

Yisro gives advice to Moshe regarding the adjudication of the nation.

Moshe's father-in-law hears about all the miracles that G-d did for the Jews, and he travels from his home in Midian to meet them in the wilderness.

G-d supplies the Jews with manna and pheasants for food, water from a rock for water.

Amalek battles with the Jews.

The Jews travel to Elim, and then to the wilderness of Sin.

The Jews run out of food, and they complain to Moshe.

Moshe tells them about the manna which will fall from the heaven in order to sustain them in the wilderness.

Q: Why did G-d have the Jews travel in the barren wilderness? Why not through inhabited cities where they could purchase food along the way?

G-d has the sea collapse in on the Egyptians, and they all drown.

Moshe leads the men in a song declaring G-d's power, and Miriam does the same with the women.

The Jews travel to Marah where they find water after thirsting for 3 days straight. Moshe makes the water drinkable.

Q: Why are the Jews tested again immediately after leaving Egypt?

G-d splits the red sea and the Jews head in.

The Egyptians chase after them and get brutalized soon after.

Pharoah and his army charge after the Jews and corner them by the Sea of Reeds.

The Jews become extremely afraid and call out to G-d in prayer and complain to Moshe.

G-d leads the Jews out of Egypt, but then has then come right back! Come find out why!

Moshe conveys more laws about Pesach and introduces the new law of sanctification of the firstborns.

Q: What is a rational behind the mitzvah of sanctification of the firstborn?

G-d smites all the firstborn non-Jews in Egypt.

The Jews clean out Egypt of all its valuables, and finally leave the land. They travel to Succos.

The Torah enumerates a few more laws regarding the Korban Pesach.

Moshe warns Pharoah with the plague of the firstborn.

G-d commands Moshe with the law of Sanctifying the New Moon, restarting the count of months starting from Nissan, and the various laws of Pesach.

Moshe relays the laws to the Jews, and the Jews obey.

Pharoah tells Moshe to go serve G-d, but to only leave their animals back in Egypt.

Moshe tells Pharoah that they need all of their animals.

G-d tells Moshe that He’s going to bring one final plague, and then the Jews will leave Egypt.

G-d requests that the Jews borrow gold and silver from the Egyptians.

Moshe brings the 8th and 9th plagues: Locusts and extreme darkness.

Q: The Torah emphasizes how extraordinary this locust swarm was. Why? What was so extraordinary about it?

G-d informs Moshe that He Himself is making Pharoah stubborn against his own will for the sake of bringing more plagues.

Moshe brings the 8th plague, locusts, against Egypt.

Pharoah tells Moshe he can go sacrifice to his G-d, but only with the men. Everyone else must remain in Egypt.

Q: Moshe requests that the children come with them to participate in the services. What role do they play? They don’t participate in sacrificing animals!

Egypt is struck with wild beasts ravaging the land, a disease which wipes out Egyptian animals, painful boils, and powerful hail.

And yet, Pharoah does not let the Jews leave Egypt.

Q: How was Pharoah able to remain stubborn even after seeing 7 supernatural miracles before his very eyes?

Hashem gives Moshe insight regarding his divine names.

Hashem sends Moshe to Pharoah for the second time to tell him to send the Jews out of Egypt.

Pharoah refuses, and the first 3 plagues are sent upon Egypt: Blood, Frogs, and Lice.

Moshe returns to Egypt and asks Pharoah to let the Jews offer sacrifices for a few days outside of the land of Egypt (a ploy for them to escape).

Pharoah refuses, and makes the workload even more difficult for the Jews.

G-d continues to persuade Moshe to accept the mission of redeeming the Jews from Egypt.

Q: Is it possible that Moshe is defying G-d when he doesn’t immediately accept the job?

Moshe stumbles upon a burning bush on Har Sinai.

G-d introduces himself to Moshe and charges Moshe with the task of taking the Jews out of Egypt.

Moshe sees an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Jew and kills him.

Moshe is discovered to have killed the Egyptian man and flees to Midian.

There he gets married and has a son named Gershom.

G-d rewards the two Jewish midwives for not killing the baby boys with houses.

Pharoah enacts a new decree to kill all baby boys.

Moshe is born and is saved by the daughter of Pharoah.

The Jews proliferate greatly in the land of Egypt.

A new king rises in the land of Egypt, and begins taking measures against the Jews in order to keep them at bay.

In the final Aliyah of Sefer Bereishes, Yosef instructs his family to bring his remains to the land of Israel after he dies.

Yosef dies at the age of 110.

Yaakov concludes his parting messages with his sons.

Yaakov dies and is brought up to the land of Israel to be buried in the Ma’aras Hamachpelah.

Yaakov begins to share his final messages with his sons.

Yaakov gives a bracha to Efraim and Menashe.

Yaakov gives the land of Shechem to Yosef.

Q: If Efriam was destined to be greater, shouldn’t that be a reason to give Menashe the greater bracha?

Yaakov lives 17 years in Egypt, and realizes he’s going to die soon.

Yosef swears to bury Yaakov in Canaan.

Yaakov gifts Yosef by splitting up his tribe into two tribes through Menashe and Efraim.

Yaakov blesses Yosef.

Yaakov and his family settles in the land of Goshen.

The Egyptians become serfs to Pharoah when they exhaust all their possessions in order to buy food.

Yosef seems to have his brother’s benefit in mind even before he’s able to forgive them. How was able to do this?

Yosef convinces Pharoah to give Yaakov and his sons the land of Goshen.

Yosef introduces his father Yaakov to Pharoah.

Yaakov and his entire family travel down to Egypt in wagons.

Pharoah sends the brothers back to Canaan with wagons in order to transport the rest of their families down to Egypt in a comfortable fashion.

The brothers return to Canaan and inform their father Yaakov of the great news that Yosef is still alive.

Q: The Medrash says that Yaakov knew Yosef was alive when he saw this wagons - a hint to the last topic they discussed before they departed: Eglah Arufah. What’s the significance of this mitzvah in the context of their departure from each other?

Yosef and Pharoah instruct the brothers to return to Canaan and bring down Yaakov and the rest of their families

Q: What’s the purpose of exile? Why couldn’t we become a nation in the land of Israel?

Yehuda ends his plea for Binyamin by offering to become Yosef’s slave, as long as the rest of the brothers can return to Yaakov.

Yosef finally reveals himself to his brothers, and tells them to not feel bad about selling him as his entire journey was clearly divinely orchestrated.

Q: If Yosef realized that his being sold was divinely orchestrated, why did he still need to test his brothers to see if they changed?

Yehuda pleads on behalf of Binyamim to spare him from becoming a slave to (unbeknownst to them) Yosef.

Q: Yehuda claims with certainty that at this point, Yosef is dead. How could he be certain about this?

Yosef dines with his brothers in his home.

After, Yosef has his silver goblet planted in Binyamin’s bag, and has his servant discover it soon after the brothers depart.

Yosef demands that Binyamin become his slave as punishment, and Yehuda steps up and defends Binyamin.

Yosef’s brothers arrive in Egypt for the second time, this time with Binyamin.

Upon their arrival, Yosef invited his brothers into his home for a meal.

Yosef gives Binyamin a bracha.

The brothers return to the land of Israel and break the bad news to their father that Shimon is being held in Egypt, and that they can only free him by bringing down Binyamin.

Yaakov enters a deep depression, and refuses to send Binyamin down.

Later, when they are all on the verge of starvation, Yaakov acquiesces and sends everyone down, including Binyamin, to Egypt.

The entire earth is being ravaged by the years of famine.

Yaakov dispatches all of his sons besides Binyamin to go down to Egypt to get food.

The brothers meet Yosef and immediately bow down to him. However, they don’t recognize him.

Instead of revealing himself to them, Yosef accuses them of being spies, and demands that they bring down their brother Binyamin in order to prove their innocence.

Q: What on earth is Yosef doing? Why is he playing games with them? Moreover, doesn’t he realize the pain he will cause his father if they take Binyamin away from him?

Pharoah appoints Yosef second in command in all of Egypt.

Yosef marries the daughter of Potifar, Asnas.

Yosef begins to prepare for the famine by storing food away.

Yosef has two sons, Menashe and Ephraim.

Q: Why didn’t Yosef ever send word to his father to save him while he was in Egypt?

Yosef exquisitely interprets Pharoah’s dreams.

He tells Pharoah that 7 years of abundance will be followed by 7 famine in the land of Egypt.

Yosef suggests that a man should be appointed to oversee the 7 years of abundance and prepare the land for the 7 years of famine.

Pharoah has 2 disturbing dreams, and is not satisfied by any interpretations he’s given by his cabinet.

After being incarcerated for 12 years, Yosef is now called upon to interpret Pharoah’s dreams.

Pharoah’s cupbearer and head baker get thrown into the same prison that Yosef is currently confined in.

Both men have a dream which Yosef correctly interprets.

Although Yosef asks the cupbearer to mention him to Pharaoh after being freed, the cupbearer forgets, leaving Yosef in prison.

At the end of the episode, I summarize the underlying plot of the Torah up until the end of this week’s Parsha.

Potifar’s wife attempts to seduce Yosef to sleep with her.

When unsuccessful, Potifar’s wife accuses Yosef of attempting to sleep with her, and Yosef is put in prison.

Yosef is brought down to Egypt and is sold to Pharoah’s head butcher, Potifar.

Yosef is successful in everything he does, and is appointed as Potifars head of household.

Yosef’s brothers dip Yosef’s special garment into goats blood to make it seem as though he was mauled to death by an animal.

Yaakov receives Yosef’s bloodied tunic and falls under the impression that Yosef was killed.

Yaakov enters a deep depression which will only lift 22 years later when he learns that Yosef was never killed.

Why did Yosef’s brothers send Yaakov the bloodied garment?

Why was Yaakov punished for 22 years through not knowing that Yosef wasn’t actually killed?
