| T-Level DSP Revision: BIM, CDE, EIR & Plan of Work | 11 Oct 2026 | 00:24:28 | |
How well do you understand BIM, the Plan of Work, the Common Data Environment (CDE) and Employer's Information Requirements (EIR)? These are key topics in T-Level DSP Core Paper 2, Content Area 9.9, and understanding how they connect is essential for your construction theory revision. In this episode of The Copper Connection Podcast, Chris Bailey breaks down these important building information management concepts using practical construction examples. Discover why BIM is much more than 3D modelling, how a Common Data Environment keeps project information accurate and accessible, and how Employer's Information Requirements define the information a client needs and when it must be delivered. We also work through the eight Plan of Work stages in the order specified for your revision, explore the seven characteristics of BIM, and explain how the BIM Execution Plan turns the client's information requirements into a delivery approach. Finally, we examine how effective information exchange can reduce rework, improve decision-making and support a smoother project handover. What you'll learn:
Your revision challenge: Write the eight Plan of Work stages from memory, then define BIM, CDE and EIR in one sentence each. Finally, practise answering the five questions that an EIR must address. | Level 3 Diploma Cold Water System Planning & Design | Revision Guide | 04 Oct 2026 | 00:25:07
Cold water systems in multistorey buildings can become complicated quickly — especially when mains pressure alone cannot provide the required flow and pressure at higher levels. In this Level 3 Diploma episode, Chris Bailey breaks down the planning and design of cold water systems and explains why boosting equipment is required in high-rise buildings and buildings constructed on high ground. The episode works through the main boosting arrangements, including direct boosted systems, header pipe systems, indirect boosting through a low-level break system and automatic pneumatic systems. It then moves into the components and controls you'll encounter in larger installations, including pumps, flow switches, solenoid valves, transducers, temperature sensors, control boxes and accumulators. Particular attention is given to accumulator operation and the calculations behind them. You'll work through pre-charge pressure, stored water volume, shower duration and refill time, alongside the principles behind Boyle's law and how compressed air helps maintain system pressure.
Before moving on, have a go at the accumulator calculations yourself. Change the supply pressure, flow rate or stored volume and see whether you can work through the complete calculation without looking back at the episode. www.thecopperconnectionpodcast.co.uk Hosted on Acast. | DSP T Level BSE Core Paper 1 — Building Regulations, Approved Documents & Standards Explained | 27 Sep 2026 | 00:33:03
"Which documents are you working to?" One question from a Building Control Surveyor at the bottom of a loft ladder in Blackpool, and three trades go quiet. By the end of this episode, you'll be the one with the answer. This episode covers the Building Regulations, Approved Documents and standards that govern design for T Level Building Services Engineering Core Paper 1, Content Area 4 (4.3.1, 4.4.1–4.4.3, 4.5.1–4.5.2), with crossover into Core Paper 2 (8.3.4, 10.4.1, 14.6). Chris Bailey sets out the authority hierarchy — regulations as law, Approved Documents as guidance, British and ISO Standards as technical benchmarks, manufacturers' instructions as product-specific requirements — with myth-versus-fact moments on the mix-ups that cost marks. Then it's a walk through all fourteen Approved Documents, A to S plus Approved Document 7, in the order you'd meet them building a house. After that: the British Standard and ISO areas in the spec, Common Minimum Standards for public sector work, the three types of manufacturers' manual, commissioning vs O&M, and why manuals belong inside a BIM environment. We finish back in the loft, testing nine Approved Documents against one domestic job. Homework: write the fourteen letters down a page, fill in each subject from memory, score yourself out of fourteen — and repeat it every week. building regulations approved documents, t level bse core paper 1, british standards and iso standards, manufacturers manuals and bim, approved documents a to s revision. thecopperconnectionpodcast.co.uk Hosted on Acast. | 9289 Apprenticeship Unit 314 — Solar Thermal Hot Water: How It Actually Works | 20 Sep 2026 | 00:19:09
Half seven on a February morning, you're stood in somebody's airing cupboard and the customer says the line everyone says: "it's got them panels on the roof, but the water's still cold." Is that system broken, or is it working exactly as designed and nobody ever explained it? This episode covers the operating principles of solar thermal hot water for Unit 314, Environmental technology systems, Phase 3 of the 9289 Plumbing and Domestic Heating apprenticeship (ST0303), Learning Outcome 2 / AC2.1. Chris Bailey also shares some big news — The Copper Connection Podcast has been shortlisted as a finalist at the 2026 Independent Podcast Awards in the Best Children and Young Adults category. Then it's straight into the kit: the five key components as a journey rather than a list — roof, brain, muscle, store, backup. Flat plate against evacuated tube and the exam-ready comparison. The differential temperature controller and why a pump sat still is not a pump that's failed. Glycol, freeze protection and why the manufacturer's percentage dilution decides whether the system performs. And the twin-coil cylinder detail that gets marks: lower coil solar, higher coil auxiliary. You will learn to: Name the five key components of a solar thermal hot water system and place them in the loop Compare flat plate and evacuated tube collectors on cost and efficiency Explain how a vacuum improves collector efficiency and how the heat exchanger phial and header tube work Describe how the DTC uses collector and cylinder sensors to activate and deactivate the pump Explain why the heat transfer fluid contains glycol and why dilution percentage affects performance Identify which cylinder coil serves the solar system and which serves the auxiliary heat source Explain why solar thermal in the UK is a pre-heat system needing an auxiliary heat source Links referenced: Solar water heating (Worcester Bosch) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhbOVqixsAw • Charging a closed loop solar water heating system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_geY-eKvBI8 • Fernox Solar S1 20 Litre dilution instructions https://fernox.com/product/solar-s1-20-litre/ Get label the components and water flow on the system diagram, and research the regulations affecting whether a solar thermal system can be installed at all — that's where we pick up next time. solar thermal hot water, unit 314 environmental technology systems, differential temperature controller, evacuated tube vs flat plate collectors, 9289 apprenticeship ST0303 phase 3 thecopperconnectionpodcast.co.uk Hosted on Acast. | Level 3 Diploma Unit 314 — Renewable & Non-Renewable Energy Sources Explained | 20 Sep 2026 | 00:22:13
Four identical houses on one street: one on mains gas, one on LPG, one on oil and coal, one with panels on the roof and a heat pump out the back. Between them you have nearly every energy source in Unit 314 — and your job is knowing which is which, and why it matters. This episode covers sources of renewable and non-renewable energy for Unit 314 of the 9289 Level 3 Diploma, Phase 3, Learning Outcome 1 (AC1.1–1.3). Chris Bailey sets out the two reasons we move toward renewables — emissions and depletion — then works the four non-renewable headings (oils, gases, solid fuels, and electricity generated from non-renewable sources), before tackling the distinction that catches most learners out: low-carbon producers versus zero-carbon producers. He then walks every technology one by one — solar thermal, solar PV, wind, tidal and river hydro, geothermal heat pumps, biomass and green hydrogen — and finishes by deriving all ten worksheet answers from first principles, naming the two traps that lose marks. You will learn to: Define non-renewable energy as finite, and renewable energy as sources that do not run out List the four headings of non-renewable energy, including electricity from non-renewable generation Explain why electricity is a carrier, not a source Distinguish low-carbon producers from zero-carbon producers Separate solar thermal (heat for hot water) from solar photovoltaic (DC converted to AC) Explain how wind, tidal barrages, tidal stream, river and dam hydro generate electricity Define a heat pump as moving heat from a low- to high-temperature reservoir via the refrigeration cycle State the condition that makes hydrogen renewable — green hydrogen via electrolysis Sort ten appliances into low-carbon and high-carbon producers Also in this episode: The Copper Connection Podcast has been shortlisted as a finalist at the 2026 Independent Podcast Awards in the Best Children and Young Adults category. Homework: keep your eyes open for solar thermal systems locally — hot water, not PV — and bring a picture in, because the next session builds directly on solar thermal. renewable and non-renewable energy, unit 314 environmental technology systems, low-carbon and zero-carbon producers, solar thermal vs solar pv, 9289 level 3 diploma phase 3 thecopperconnectionpodcast.co.uk Hosted on Acast. | Fault Diagnosis on Sanitary Appliances & Pipework | Unit 311, Learning Outcome 4 | 14 Sep 2026 | 00:24:44
A macerator that keeps cycling on its own, a basin that loses its trap seal every time it's used, a WC flush that sends water bubbling up through the bath next door — these are the calls that separate a plumber who guesses from one who diagnoses. In this episode of The Copper Connection Podcast, Chris Bailey covers Learning Outcome 4 of Unit 311 for the Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing and Domestic Heating (City & Guilds 6035 / SmartScreen Unit 311): fault diagnosis and rectification on sanitary appliances and pipework. This episode supports AC 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3: • AC 4.1: Methods of diagnosing sanitary appliance and pipework faults • AC 4.2: Diagnostic checks for a range of common faults • AC 4.3: Repair and rectification procedures for those faults You will learn to: • Use the three real diagnostic tools — the customer's own account, manufacturer fault-finding charts, and the governing standards (Approved Document Part H and BS EN 12058) • Apply the seven-step process every time: diagnose, notify, isolate, decommission, rectify, re-commission, handover • Diagnose and clear blockages the right way — trap first, mechanical clearing second, chemicals only as a last resort • Identify and name all seven causes of trap seal loss: leak, evaporation, wavering out, self-siphonage, induced siphonage, compression and momentum • Recognise faults caused by poor installation — drooping pipework, warped stacks with no allowance for expansion, and cross-flow between a WC and an adjacent bath • Diagnose and rectify faults on macerators, waste lifters, sink waste-disposal units, air admittance valves and condensate pipes • Understand why regular maintenance — and a good handover conversation — prevents most of these faults from coming back This is the direct follow-on from the central heating fault-finding episode, moving from the heating side of the trade to the wet side — same discipline, same seven steps, different appliances. | Units That Actually Matter On Site – Unit 303 Electrical & Scientific Principles for Plumbing & BSE | 27 Jul 2026 | 00:14:40
Struggling to connect Unit 303 "Electrical and Scientific Principles – Units of Measurement" with what you actually do on site? In this Phase 1 Unit 303 episode of The Copper Connection Podcast, Chris Bailey turns SI units and derived units into practical tools for UK plumbing and building services students. You'll start with the seven base SI units – metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, candela and mole – and see which ones matter most in everyday plumbing tasks. Then we dive into temperature (Celsius vs Kelvin), pressure and head (pascal, kilopascals, bar and static head), and capacity in litres and cubic metres. From there, we break down key derived units: area in m², volume in m³, velocity in m/s, and density in kg/m³, including water's expansion and why pipes can burst when it freezes. We'll also tackle the non-SI units you still meet on UK sites: imperial length and weight, old gas meters in cubic feet per hour, and BSP pipe thread sizes that mix inches with metric diameters. Ideal for T-Level BSE, Level 2 and Level 3 plumbing learners and apprentices revising Unit 303, this episode helps you use units confidently in drawings, calculations and commissioning – and turns "science" into something that feels site-ready. 🔗 Handouts, worksheets and revision resources at thecopperconnectionpodcast.co.uk Follow The Copper Connection on Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube, and share this episode with a mate who hates science but loves tools. electrical and scientific principles, unit 303 9289, 9289 phase 1 science, SI units plumbing, plumbing apprentice science revision, t level bse revision, city and guilds level 3 plumbing, ST0303 apprenticeship, T-Level building services engineering, copper connection podcast, Chris Bailey plumbing podcast Hosted on Acast.
