#97: Yannick Jacob – Going Beyond Blueprints to Challenge the Status Quo of Coaching
Saison 1 · Épisode 97
jeudi 3 avril 2025 • Durée 02:04:54
Growing up with a father and brother who were “never wrong” left Yannick Jacob seeking a life that wasn’t about right answers. That led him to coaching, and more specifically to existential coaching, a space where humanity’s oldest and most profound questions – and the plethora of answers to them – can be explored at a deeper level.
Yannick is an existential life and leadership coach, a positive psychologist, and the programme director of the Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching (ACIC) at the School of Positive Transformation. In this episode of The Coach’s Journey, he shares what he learned about himself in order to hear his calling and live his truth as someone driven to explore the whole spectrum of what life has to offer.
Host Neil Mackinnon helps Yannick to illuminate the links between his many passions, such as existential philosphy and DJing, and to demonstrate how integrating his variety of interests enriches his all areas of his work.
Yannick also discusses his groundbreaking Coaching Lab, which offers the chance to witness highly experienced coaches live at work, and Rocket Supervision, which provides coaches with the support they need to practice at the top of their game.
This episode will resonate with anyone who wants to feel empowered to shake up traditional coaching paradigms and create a practice that feels authentic and energising, as Yannick brings his remarkable breadth of experience and expertise to bear on some of the most fundamental questions we face as coaches and as human beings.
In this episode, Yannick and Neil Mackinnon also talk about:
Courageous choices, and how embracing discomfort can help to build meaning
Enlarging your sphere of influence to enable people to connect with you
The power of being financially committed to something, and the benefits to your clients of raising your fees
When we should be brave enough to challenge the traditional frame and share more of ourselves with our clients
Yannick issues a rallying cry to everyone in the coaching space to frame their space, sculpt the approach that works for them, and lean into their passion for their own way of doing things.

#96: Rebecca Norton – How Coaching Walks Can Guide Us To New Pathways Through Life
Saison 1 · Épisode 96
jeudi 27 mars 2025 • Durée 02:11:05
How do our surroundings affect our ability to think? And can we connect with our sense of place and purpose by immersing ourselves in nature?
In this episode of the Coach’s Journey Podcast, walking coach Rebecca Norton brings her combined expertise in coaching and mountain leadership to bear on these questions and many more, in conversation with host Alex Swallow.
Rebecca and Alex explore the lasting impact that access to the natural world has on our lives, from infancy through to adulthood, and how the coaching walks that Rebecca offers her clients help them to navigate new pathways – both in the physical environment and their internal worlds.
Rebecca, who delivers workshop facilitation and social prescribing alongside her coaching and “wonder walks”, describes how she carefully built up her coaching business while continually developing her skills and experience as an outdoor activities instructor.
She links the idea of being a tourist in your own city and developing curiosity about new perspectives with the importance of getting alongside coaching clients and seeing the world through their eyes.
The many twists, turns, ups and downs of Rebecca’s adventures in the hills act as a powerful metaphor for journeys through the challenges of careers, relationships, families and life decisions. Just as her clients gain new perspective on their lives as they ascend into the hills with Rebecca, so do we as she reflects on her unique, brilliant approach to coaching conversations and many other aspects of her work.
In this episode, Rebecca and Alex also talk about:
The power of experiencing coaching techniques from both sides
How to integrate experiences as we train and gain qualifications
The barriers we place between ourselves and our own fulfillment
Seeing who we need to become in order to achieve our goals
How to lower the importance of gaining a client when building your coaching business
Rebecca also reminds us that personal development can be a grueling expedition, and that if we fail to interrogate our deeper purpose and connect the ‘why’ that guides us, we can be at risk of losing our way. She generously ends this episode with an array of tips to help coaches stay at their best.

#87: Amy Brann – Neuroscience For Coaches
Saison 1 · Épisode 87
jeudi 5 décembre 2024 • Durée 02:10:56
Amy Brann has been studying neuroscience since she was 15.
Now, as the founder of Synaptic Potential, she brings all that expertise to working with organisations to create meaningful change backed by scientific underpinnings.
Named 2023 HR Most Influential Thinker, Amy is the author of three books about neuroscience, including Neuroscience For Coaches, which is on the reading lists of many of the best coach training organisations and forms the foundation for this episode: a deep dive into how to make coaching and learning really work.
In conversation with The Coach’s Journey Founder Robbie Swale, Amy busts myths, teaches hard-to-understand science in ways we can grasp, and tells a story of hope and optimism for what is possible if we can understand brain science and move towards our Whole Brain Potential.
In particular, Amy and Robbie talk about:
The pitfalls of setting high expectations with your clients and how to avoid them.
The neuroscience of visualisations, and how to use them effectively to increase autonomy for your clients.
Crucial areas of neuroscience for coaches to know about: neuroplasticity, mirror neurons and more.
Why trust is one of the things coaches should pay more attention to and how to do that.
Plus Amy coaches Robbie live on how to let his emotions help him pay attention to the right things.

The Reticular Activating System note from Amy: ‘The reticular activating system spans an extensive portion of the brainstem. Most of the neurons comprising the midbrain reticular formation lie dorsal and lateral to the red nuclei. Complex interactions between multiple neurotransmitters modulate the action of the reticular activating system with both cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission having key roles. The reticular activating system's fundamental role is regulating arousal and sleep−wake transitions. The ascending reticular activating system projects to the intralaminar nuclei of the thalami, which projects diffusely to the cerebral cortex. The ascending projections of the reticular activating system enhance the attentive state of the cortex and facilitate conscious perception of sensory stimuli. Additionally, the collective role of the brainstem reticular formation is to regulate autonomic function, muscle reflexes, and tone.’ B.L. Walter, A.G. Shaikh, in Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (Second Edition), 2014 - note from Robbie: So it is part of the brain, but only a small part of it is about attention/conscious perception. To fully understand this, we’ll have to invite Amy back on the show!

#84: Gary Buxton MBE – Get in There, Give It a Go and Find Your Own Coaching Style
Saison 1 · Épisode 84
jeudi 7 novembre 2024 • Durée 01:27:45
Gary Buxton admits he spends his life stuck in rabbitholes. As a psychologist and executive coach, he loves nothing more than to geek out about the evidence base for coaching, ensuring his own practice is built on the latest science.
While Gary is a firm believer that coaching is always a process and never a destination, in this episode of The Coach’s Journey Podcast he warns against the pitfalls of being overwhelmed by study, reminding us that it is through practice that we cultivate and nurture our own unique coaching stance.
Gary’s own journey has encompassed work as a director, CEO and head hunter in the private sector, as well as helping people back into work in the social impact sector, honing his coaching skills in diverse, challenging settings.
Awarded an MBE in 2014 for Services to the Young People of England, Gary now trains new coaches on the Barefoot Coaching postgraduate programme, He is a qualified coach mentor and coach supervisor with ICF, and is on his way to becoming a chartered coaching psychologist with the British Psychological Society.
In conversation with host Ruth Saville, Gary explores a vibrant array of concepts from psychology and coaching that centre around creating balance in our lives and having our value reflected in our work.
In this episode, Gary and host Ruth Saville also talk about:
· The benefits of keeping a third of your time free for play
· How to nurture your task-positive and default mode networks
· What psychologists have to teach coaches...and vice versa!
· How to turn your friends into your marketing department
Gary also speaks about how to hold onto the value of your work in a coaching landscape filling up with new tools, technology and solutions, and how to put enough of yourself out into the world to allow people to choose you.

#83 – If You Want To Make More Money, Talk About Money More! (Coaching Business Fundamentals)
Saison 1 · Épisode 83
jeudi 31 octobre 2024 • Durée 49:03
This episode is the fifth in a series diving into The Coaching Business Flywheel and the fundamental parts of a sustainable coaching business. In this episode, Robbie and Ruth focus on the part of the Flywheel that often creates the most fear and resistance for coaches: telling people how you work, how much it costs and how to pay you.
It couldn’t be clearer that unless you do this, there are no clients to coach. And yet, so many of us are filled with fear, hesitance and/or ickyness when it comes to the money conversation. In this conversation, we’ll try to change that.
We cover:
Resourcesand tactics that can help you think about how YOU want to work with clients, and how to talk about that authentically.
How to rewrite your stories about money.
Why buying coaching for yourself will make ALL the difference to your money conversations.
How to change the default so that you tell more people how you work and how much it costs, instead of almost never doing that.

#82 – Want More Clients? Create More Insight! (Coaching Business Fundamentals)
Saison 1 · Épisode 82
jeudi 24 octobre 2024 • Durée 38:26
This episode is the fourth in a series diving into The Coaching Business Flywheel and the fundamental parts of a sustainable coaching business. In it, Robbie and Ruth dive into the power of focusing our energy and action on creating insight, and how, if we create insight enough, we almost can’t help but have the coaching business we want.
Robbie shares why he believes that the more we can create insight for someone before they become a client, the better it is for our businesses, and outlines just how powerful creating insight can be for putting energy into our business that will pay back again, and again, and again.
We cover:
What is insight and why does it matter?
The advantages of ‘The Prosperous Coach Approach’ and just coaching people even before they are clients. (We touch on the disadvantages, too.)
Why we forget that we know MANY ways to create insight for people.
A question you can ask yourself every day to get into action building your coaching business.

#81: George Warren – The Coaching Industry is Ignoring Reality
Saison 1 · Épisode 81
jeudi 17 octobre 2024 • Durée 01:52:47
George Warren describes “growth through discomfort” as a key theme in his life and in this episode of The Coach’s Journey Podcast, he lays down a challenge to the coaching industry to step out of its comfort zone and explore questions that might challenge the very foundations of our work.
While many of us place the principles of being client-led and non-directive at the centre of our practice, George views coaching through a lens of universal interconnectedness where there is always more than one voice to consider.
Drawing upon Gestalt psychology, Eastern mysticism and his experiences as a solo traveller in the Middle East, George’s work highlights the unique role coaching can play in finding answers to some of society’s most pressing questions, from global conflicts to the loneliness epidemic.
In this conversation with host Neil Mackinnon, George describes how his innate emotional sensitivity became a “nuclear reactor”, fuelling him along a path from the world of luxury travel sales to the cultivation of a deeper connection with the environment through coaching.
In this episode, George and Neil also talk about:
The complimentary tools of support and challenge
Why George believes coaches do not need a niche
How supervision can become “an amphitheatre of profound learning”
The “beautiful gift” of ignorance when working with new clients
George ends this episode by placing coaching at a fascinating crossroads, describing contrasting futures that might lie ahead depending on the choices we all make in the coming years.
