Reviving the Art of the Apprenticeship: Steps to Immersing Yourself in Your Chosen Profession07 May 202401:00:49

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, a familiar concept is making a triumphant return: apprenticeship. Once relegated to the annals of history, this age-old practice is now gaining traction in schools and beyond. Why the resurgence? Because theory alone cannot forge true competence. To truly excel, students must not only study their craft but also immerse themselves in it. Whether molding clay, coaxing melodies from an instrument, or perfecting a soufflé, apprenticeship breathes life into learning.

But here’s the twist: this advice isn’t just for students. Life itself is our big school, and we are all perpetual learners. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a wide-eyed dreamer, there’s room for apprenticeship in your journey. So let’s embrace this timeless practice, guided by the wisdom of mentors like Adam Torres, who encourages us to revive the art of apprenticeship.

Join us for this episode. Together, we’ll learn, create, and elevate our skills—bridging the gap between theory and mastery.

Time is All a Child Hears: How to Make Your Time Count with Your Child23 Apr 202400:50:20

Our children are facing unprecedented challenges, and they need our support more than ever. As the U.S. Surgeon General aptly stated, these difficulties are uniquely complex and difficult to navigate. Despite our best intentions, many of us find ourselves unsure of how to help. There’s no simple solution, and the path forward is far from straightforward. But one thing is clear: it will require time and intentional effort to truly understand and connect with our children.

The Surgeon General reminds us that there’s no map for this journey. The road is winding, filled with unexpected twists and turns. As parents, educators, and caregivers, we grapple with questions: How do we bridge the gap? How do we guide our children through this intricate landscape? The answer lies in recognizing the value of time—the precious moments we spend getting to know our children.

Time is more than minutes ticking away on a clock. It’s an investment—an opportunity to build trust, understanding, and connection. When we truly know our children—their dreams, fears, and aspirations—we can better support them. But if we overlook the significance of time, the crisis will persist.

Join us on this podcast as we explore how to use this time effectively, so our children can truly hear us and find their way in this complex world.

Authenticity – Can You Be Too Authentic? & How Much is Too Much?09 Apr 202400:47:20

Can you be too authentic? If so, how much is too much?

TMI, aka “too much information,” is when those around you feel you’re a little too real. You’re a little too open. You’re a little too authentic.

In a time where our culture encourages more and more authenticity in every sphere we walk, we’re seeing tension at best and backlash at worst for those who are being authentic but not being received well by those around them.

Is it a case of insensitivity from an immature group that demands similarity? Or is it the case of TMI from the one who demands their authenticity?

In this episode, we aim to answer those questions. We want to keep it authentic and real. So join us for this honest reveal.

The Bridge of Discipline: Why This is Needed for you to Cross to Success & 10 Practical Steps to Build It. (Part 2)30 Jan 202400:31:32

Are you finding yourself already losing motivation for your goals? Are you finding that re-reading your goals is not getting you back on track? In this episode, we get into Part 2 and discuss why discipline is important and offer 10 key steps to help you be more disciplined in 2024 and beyond to achieve the goals you’re looking to achieve personally or professionally.

After all, many people write New Year’s resolutions with the hope that this year will be different. They set goals for themselves, only to find themselves writing the same goals again the following year. It can feel like a never-ending cycle of progress and regression. The problem is that there seems to be progress at the beginning, but then the bridge to cross to the promised land of achievements and goals is missing. What is that bridge?

The bridge is called DISCIPLINE. Without discipline, it’s difficult to achieve our goals and see that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Discipline is the key to success. In this next episode, we’ll talk about why discipline is important and how to build it. This could be the difference between solving the reason you’re falling off that horse and how to get back on it and stay there. Remember, discipline is the bridge that will take you from where you are to where you want to be.

Recognition: Making Some Feel Not Invisible – How to See the Worth of the Person Next to You19 Dec 202300:51:02

Finally, we need a holiday from the holidays before we get back to work. How do we pace ourselves? Is there an approach to stay grounded in the midst of our ever-increasing busy world? Is there a work-life approach?

It’s a question that begs the person asking, “Do I really understand myself?” Sometimes we do, but many times we don’t, and we need help to discover who we are.

Think about the opportunities lost, conflicts created, and relationships that fell apart all because we didn’t take the time to “know thyself.” This is crucial to being the best person we can be at home, on the job, or in the office. Yet we don’t take courses at school or get provided with a textbook of ourselves to help us with this lifetime subject.

In our next podcast, we’re going to explore how to better understand who we are. I have Jeff Harnois as our coach in this corner, who will be bringing his expertise to this topic and show us the tools out there for this discovery. Let’s check it out.

Moving Through Change with Tajé McIntosh10 Oct 202301:00:35

When was the last time you celebrated the process of change? Feeling the rhythm and joys of change is not something most people think about. Many times, moving through change brings frustration, impatience, and stress. People often curse the change taking place. But what if we embraced change? What if we had a mindset that sees change as an opportunity to thrive, not just survive? Where would it take us? Where would it take you in your career and life?

This mindset can help you navigate through the discomfort of unfamiliar situations and help you grow in your career and life. In fact, one of the most common unconscious mindsets is that “change is temporary; this will pass” but when you see something as temporary, you tend to cope with it instead of accepting and embracing it. The reality is that change is a constant, and you’ll need to navigate it.

In this podcast, we’re going to explore how to embrace moving through change with peace and joy. I have in my corner as coach, Tajé McIntosh, who will be bringing her expertise to this topic.

Tajé McIntosh is the co-founder of RenewIQ Consulting and the Director of Client Delivery at Pearl Operational Design. She is an organizational culture and change management champion, who works diligently to help organizations improve operational processes. She works with clients to ensure transformations (whether culture, process, or systems) are adopted in a way that puts people first.

When she’s not busy working with clients to transform their organizations, she is spending time with her family and giving back to the community. Her strong desire to serve has led her to work with many different grassroots, established community groups and non-profit organizations over the last 25 years – in service to youth and marginalized people.

And to do that, we need to have guts and take the right risks.

Making a Life And Not a Living at Work: Finding Connection & Purpose in the Workplace27 Aug 202400:46:46

I’ve often heard that a company is not a family. While that may be true, it’s the people who make up a family. When you find your people at work and bond like a family, it makes work much more meaningful and transforms the workplace into a space where you can truly thrive.

In today’s world, where opportunities for authentic connections are dwindling, the workplace might be one of the few places left where people can form these bonds out of necessity. But how do we transition from merely making a living to making a life at work, where connection and purpose are integral?

If you’re interested in understanding the significance of the workplace for your wellbeing, you won’t want to miss this episode.

Join me as I sit down with Glenn Akramoff to discuss “Making a Life and Not Just a Living at Work.”

Glenn Akramoff is the founder and CEO of Akramoff LLC and author of Human Centred Team

His expertise is rehabilitating and revitalizing municipal government workplaces and has developed a program that will improve any organization by returning humanity to the center of focus.

Glenn’s life experiences and core values are the center of his purpose. Groupthink or Group Sink: Steps to Disrupt the Herd Mentality15 Aug 202300:46:50

Groupthink can have a significant impact on our behavior at home, in public, and in the office. It can cause people to ignore important information and ultimately lead to poor decisions. This can be damaging even in minor situations but can have much more dire consequences in certain settings. For example, in schools, the workplace or religious settings, groupthink can lead groups to ignore ethics or morals, prioritize one specific goal while ignoring countless collateral consequences, or, at worst, instigate serious harm or even death.

To disrupt groupthink, there are several steps or techniques that can be employed. What are those steps? Well join me on this podcast as we figure out how not to get lulled into groupthink. We’ll explore ways to disrupt groupthink and avoid its negative consequences. Together, we can learn how to make better decisions and avoid being sunk by groupthink.

Have You Taken Your Vitamin CQ – Steps to Build Your Cultural Intelligence01 Aug 202300:56:18

Many people are learning about increasing their IQ (intelligent quotient) and EQ (emotional quotient) but many are not increasing their CQ (cultural quotient), which is their ability to connect with people who are more culturally distant from us. There is a greater need for people to get along with those who are different from us. The words of the late Stephen Covey, “Seek first to understand then to be understood,” becomes more critical to avoid continual misunderstanding that can lead to interpersonal conflict at home, intergroup conflict at work and even international conflict abroad.

Today, interactions between countries spanning the distance of oceans seem like merely a block away. Although commercially the world has become increasingly smaller with technology, culturally many act as if they are planets away. This means the more multicultural, multiethnic, and multiracial that we become as a society, there is a greater need for people to become knowledgeable about each other’s cultural background to be successful together.

Join this podcast as we talk about taking our CQ to build our strength to understand each other’s culture.

A Cup of Coffee with 2 Drops of Kindness Please – How to Offer Kindness to Others18 Jul 202300:51:04

The world can be a cold place for many days. It only becomes colder when we lack kindness to each other. We forget that kindness is that bit of heavenly sweetness which can really make a person’s day (and ours too). Kindness can be a part of the solution in our conflicts with each other, especially on social media. Unfortunately, we’ve forgotten what kindness looks like.

As our culture struggles about the values that matter to one another, one thing is evident. We believe kindness is still important. However, we don’t always put it into practice during conflict. And even beyond the conflict, many of us still don’t put kindness into practice when others who disagree with us most need it.

In this podcast, we’re going back to basics and talking about kindness. So, we’re able to extend and have a cup of coffee with each other—sweetened with a bit of kindness. You’ll leave this podcast knowing some more ways in which you can offer that cup of kindness, with some sweetness, to friends and strangers alike.

Don't Take It Personal - How to Take Feedback from Others04 Jul 202300:34:19

The art of giving feedback is a skill that many learn to do, especially those who are managers. However, the reverse is not true. There is a lack of the art of receiving feedback, which paralyzes people from realizing their best selves. The trauma of receiving horrible feedback creates the fear of running away from future feedback especially if you're an employee.

The reality is feedback is part of life—for better or for worse. The question is: how do we create an inner system of resilience and process of feedback, so we don’t become bitter—but better? How do we not take feedback personally? Join me in this next podcast to hear.

Living in the Tension20 Jun 202300:36:08

If you have ever played a string instrument like a guitar or violin, you know how challenging it is to get the right sound when you immediately pick it up. And this is not necessarily because you’re a bad guitarist or violinist. However, you recognize the strings on the guitar or violin need to be adjusted—tightened or loosened.

When strings are too lax, the quality of sound is hindered (muffled) or not produced. The opposite is also true. If the strings are tightened too much, they will rupture and pop. A stringed instrument works best when it can "live in the tension".

How about our lives? How do we live in the tension—the right tension to make music? In this Coach’s Corner podcast, we will help unpack this tension and understand it to find that right balance. So our lives will better sing to others around us and ourselves within.

They say Monday is the toughest day of the week. This can be for several reasons of course. One wonders if a smile is too expensive to purchase or if we have forgotten the key to unlock the door of unhappiness we find on Monday and brighten each other’s day. We can all be superheroes if we just smiled more.

How can a smile be so powerful? Check out this podcast to find out how and know the power of just a smile that can better brighten your day—at no cost.

Making Clear Your Values – Steps on Making Your Values Valuable11 Apr 202300:34:25

What are your values? You’ve probably been asked that question numerous times. Whether be in an interview, a workshop or a date, this is an inevitable question that is asked by either interviewer, workshop facilitator, or the date in front of you, “what are values?” The question seems simple: that's if you really know your values.

The question seems innocent if you haven’t been impacted by those who understand them. Many relationships fall apart whether on teams or in families because we don’t understand each other’s values including our own. This creates frustration, anger, and pain.

In this next episode, Denley will explore how we can better understand our values personally and collectively. So, we can not only better understand what drives others but also what drives us.

Have you ever been disrespected by someone out in the open like in a meeting with colleagues, in an outing with friends or even in your backyard BBQ with family? The person says something so offensive to you or about you or others that you can’t think straight with offense and anger. You want to say something, but you don’t know how it will be received.

At the same time, you know if you leave it alone that it wouldn’t sit right with your conscience. What do you do? How do you call out in a respectful way where you both win? Your goal is to be authentically heard while the other person who hurt you is motivated to change their behaviour without you stooping lower and retaliating–at least ideally.

If that’s your situation and you can't figure out how to muster the courage and approach to address it in the open, you need to listen to this next podcast. We address how to call out others in a respectful way for you personally and you to help others to do the same. What is Love? Understanding L.O.V.E.14 Feb 202300:33:01

What is love? That’s the million-dollar question, or even billion dollars, many are looking and pursuing an answer for. This was the question asked by Trinidadian German Eurodance artist, Haddaway. His song was about figuring out how he can love his love where he was failing with his love.

What is love? How do I best love the people that are dear to me? It’s an allusive question. It’s not easy to define. Love has so many dimensions. That’s the reason that we’ll be tackling this question in love on the Coach’s Corner for this Valentine's Day. Join me on this podcast to hear my take.

The Courage to Fix – How to Restore Your Broken Relationship03 Jan 202300:35:03

Part of living life is to be hurt by others. We can't avoid it. Many of us have been hurt by someone whom we care about at one time or another. We can move on from those hurts by the act of the person who hurt us to reach out and mend that wound. What if that person who did the hurting or wounding is us? What if we are that perpetrator?

On the flip side, many of us have been the perpetrator and wounded where our loved ones are waiting for us to respond to mend that deep relationship. Unfortunately, we fail to do so because we lack the courage to fix the mess and hurt we created. If we can only muster courage to do what is right, we can move forward with our loved one who has forgiven us.

In this episode, we look at knowing how to restore our broken relationship through our courageous initiative to go mend and fix.

The 3 R's: Rest, Reflect & Renew 22 Nov 202200:24:49

Have you ever heard about the 3Rs? Not Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. Not that type. Yet these 3 R's are needed to keep a different kind of house clean: our inner lives.

As busy individuals, it's important to carve out time to do so by personally, "Rest, Reflect and Renew." It keeps us humble, which means we stay grounded. Our ability to stay grounded is so key to making effective decisions that benefit all of those who are impacted. It's hard to stay grounded if there's a mess on the floor. (Parents may very well remember the beautiful toy spread that their toddlers made within their homes.) The 3R: Rest, Reflect and Renew allow us to make that time for that inner clean-up so we can function at our best.

To Be or To Become – Balancing the Tension of Consistency and Change08 Nov 202200:26:33

In our fast-paced world, there is a tension between “being” and “becoming” as a person. We find ourselves navigating two ongoing realities: change and consistency. In the world of philosophy, the study of existence or being is known as ontology. Specifically, “being” is the essence of you as a person. It’s static as what is—will be. Like the shape of a circle, you are who you are, and that can’t be changed. You are like a resilient rock of personality and character. In contrast, “becoming” refers to the essence of you that is dynamic; what is—will change. Like the shape of a line, you are who you will be. You are like a rushing river of passions and dreams.

In this episode, we will be unpacking this notion of “being” and “becoming” and how seeing life through this lens can be helpful with your decision-making and personal growth. Will you be? Or will you become?

Expectations vs. Expectancy – What's the Difference?25 Oct 202200:30:39

Expectations versus expectancy seem synonymous but are emotionally different. They both deal with anticipated behaviors, but the former we impose on the people we care about, whereas the latter we accept. Unfortunately, many of us get two confused. This is because we believe or assume others have our expectations when the truth is they don't.

However, we project our anger onto our loved ones thinking they broke our expectations when they are living out of their own values and beliefs. Instead of shifting our mindset to expectancy, which honors the other's values and behaviors, we stir up unreasonable anger within us by projecting our expectations onto the unaware person. Hence, our wellness suffers because we feel constantly disrespected by misreading the behaviors of others. In this episode, we clarify the difference between one and the other and its importance to us.
