| Coach EM Gem #238: Are You Bringing Your Best Coaching Skills Home? | 27 oct. 2026 | 00:03:28 | |
G'day team! Coach EM here with your monthly coaching GEM! I've just returned from two incredible retreats in Winter Park, Colorado, and Leavenworth, Washington State, where spouses and partners joined us for something BRAND NEW! Leader as Partner! Now, I'm not a marriage therapist or relationship counsellor. I'm a COACH! And I believe coaching is a higher level of communicating. What fascinated me was hearing one participant say: "I'm actually quite good at this at work, and I've just realised I need to start using these skills at home!" Another shared: "In 36 years of marriage, we've never thought about doing a values exercise together!" WOW! 36 YEARS! It reminded me that sometimes we're so focused on developing our leadership skills at work, we forget to bring those same skills into our most important relationships. And that's what inspired three simple themes: PRESENCE — I SEE & HEAR you. PURPOSE — I UNDERSTAND what matters to us. CONNECTION — I SHOW you that you matter. And here's something fascinating. Relationship research highlights the importance of positive interactions. In stable relationships, researchers found approximately FIVE positive interactions for every ONE negative interaction during conflict. A thank you. Eye contact. A moment of appreciation. Really listening. It's the LITTLE things that ADD UP! So here's your Coach EM GEM: "The quality of your relationships is shaped by the quality of your everyday interactions." And remember, a partner is anyone you want to move forward with in life. So, here's my challenge. Who is ONE person you could be more present with, better understand, or intentionally connect with TODAY? Because the quality of our relationships doesn't happen by accident. It happens by INTENTION! Until next time...

| Coach EM GEM with Cliff Samara #234: What Does LUCK Really Mean? | 06 oct. 2026 | 00:01:51 | |
Coach EM GEM - LUCK As a sports coach, I never said, “Good luck.” I’d say: “I know you can do this - because of the preparation. Now go and enjoy the battle of competition.” Why? Because I never wanted athletes to believe their performance came down to luck. One of my greatest inspirations is my father-in-law, Cliff Samara. Born in Sri Lanka, he left home at just 15 years old to chase his dreams - and never looked back. His take on luck has always stayed with me: There are probabilities. You can influence what becomes an actuality through your preparation, courage, and action. Prepare well. • Live inspired

| Executive Coach #232: Nancy Girres - Courage, Congruency and One Beautiful Life | 15 sept. 2026 | 00:34:51 | |
What does it mean to live, lead, and coach with greater courage and authenticity? In this deeply personal and honest conversation, Nancy Girres, Vistage Chair and Executive Coach, explores how we close the gap between the life we’re living and the life we say we want. We unpack why motivation is often about creating the right environment, the power of peer groups, making wise decisions, and choosing priorities that reflect who we truly are. Nancy reminds us that you don’t “do” courage, you have courage; you don’t “do” love, you love; and results come from what you choose to do. And when it comes to what makes a great coach? Listen deeply and care enough to challenge someone to consider that their thinking could be different. After all, we only get one beautiful life, so how can we get a little better every day? About Nancy Girres: Nancy Girres is an executive coach, Vistage Chair, and leadership expert based in Northern Colorado. Growing up in a small farm town without mentors or a roadmap, Nancy built her career through what she calls “brave, accidental, and magical decisions,” guided by people who believed in her before she knew how to believe in herself. Today, Nancy brings that same transformative belief to CEOs, business owners, and high-level leaders. She helps them see the potential they haven’t yet named, listen to the dreams they haven’t spoken out loud, and take action, not someday, but now. Known for asking the right questions, holding space with grace, and pulling the best out of individuals and teams, Nancy combines deep wisdom with raw vulnerability in her coaching. She doesn’t just preach candor, she lives it. Through Vistage peer groups, one-on-one coaching, retreat facilitation, and speaking engagements, Nancy challenges leaders to trade comfort for courage and step into more of who they are. Her work is for those ready to recalibrate, rise, and lead from a place of alignment and authenticity. Connect with Nancy: Website: https://www.nancygirres.com

| Coach EM Gem #230: Age Gaps? Start with Strengths | 25 août 2026 | 00:01:51 | |
Coach EM GEM — Start with Strengths We often focus on what people need to improve. What if we started with what they're already great at? Whether you're leading across generations, departments, or personalities, one question can unlock a powerful conversation: "What are your strengths, and how do you leverage them in the workplace?" You might be surprised by the answers. A younger employee may bring fresh ideas, adaptability, and digital fluency. A more experienced team member may bring wisdom, perspective, and pattern recognition. Different generations. Different experiences. Different strengths. The goal isn't to make everyone the same. The goal is to help people recognize their strengths and use them more intentionally. When people know what they do well, confidence grows. When teams understand each other's strengths, collaboration improves. Start with strengths. Build from there. • Live inspired

| Coach EM Gem #228: Coaching Questions to Unlock Drive | 11 août 2026 | 00:02:23 | |
Coach EM Gem — Coach the Person First One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is coaching the problem before they understand the person. The better you understand the person in front of you, the better you can coach them. Try asking: • What motivates you? In sport, I often ask athletes about the books they've read, podcasts they've listened to, role models they admire, and experiences that have shaped them. These clues reveal what they value, how they think, and what drives them. When we take the time to understand someone's world, coaching becomes more personal, more meaningful, and more effective. Remember: Coach the person, not just the performance. • Live inspired Here is the TED talk I refer to: "Teach girls bravery, not perfection" by Reshma Saujani.

| Coach EM Gem #226: Go Curious. Lead Better. Listen now. | 28 juil. 2026 | 00:02:33 | |
Coach EM Gem — Go Curious Micromanagement is often driven by certainty. Coaching leadership is driven by curiosity. The next time you're tempted to tell someone what to do, try one of these instead: ❌ "That won't work." ❌ "Here's the answer." ❌ "I don't know." A few of my favourite coaching questions: • What if there was another way? The moment you move from telling to wondering, people start thinking for themselves. The quality of your leadership is often reflected in the quality of your questions. • Live inspired
| Tennis Coach #225: Mike Sell - Know Your Player: Coaching the Person Before the Performance | 21 juil. 2026 | 00:46:24 | |
What does it really mean to "know your player"? In this episode of The Coaching Podcast, Coach EM sits down with former ATP professional, Olympic coach, and LTP Academy Co-Director Mike Sell to explore why great coaching begins with understanding the individual. Mike shares practical insights on tailoring development to each player's needs, creating purposeful practice with no wasted repetitions, preparing to win, and remaining calm under pressure—like the flight attendant during turbulence. They also discuss the value of having a second set of eyes on your coaching, the dangers of over-coaching, the importance of asking great questions and listening deeply, and why the best leaders know that coaching is about people, not position. Whether you're coaching athletes, leading a team, or raising children, this conversation is packed with simple yet powerful ideas to help you develop people with greater intention. About Mike Sell Mike Sell is Co-Director of LTP (Live to Play) Academy and Director of the LTP Pro Program. | Coach EM Gem #224: Are we speaking the same language? | 14 juil. 2026 | 00:03:17
Coach EM Gem — Are You Speaking the Same Language? A Vistage Chair recently sent me this note after one of my workshops: "I reckon you’re an absolute legend—your energy had the whole room stoked! Fair dinkum, your custom approach was spot-on for the crew’s skillset. And crikey, you nailed it—coaching’s a ripper topic that’s not talked about enough. I’ll be spreading the word like a kangaroo on the hop. No worries, I’ve got zero suggestions—you’re already smashing it!" Needless to say, my American friends found it hilarious. It reminded me of a point I often make in leadership: Never assume people are speaking the same language. In a California workshop, I shared this classic Aussie sentence: "So next arvo, we're gonna head down to the park for a barbie. I'll bring the chooks and snags if you could bring an eski of stubbies. Hopefully this time you won't get crook. Be sure and bring your cossie and your togs since it should be a nice day and it's totally fine to be in your thongs..." The room had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. The lesson? Communication is not about what you say. Communication is about what the other person understands. As leaders, coaches, parents, and teammates, we often assume our message is clear because it makes sense to us. But clarity lives with the listener, not the speaker. Before moving on, ask: "What did you hear?" Because effective communication isn't what you say. It's what they hear. • Live inspired

| Coach EM Gem #222: Do you want to go to the next level? Here's how ... | 30 juin 2026 | 00:01:50 | |
Coach EM Gem - Do You Want to Go to the Next Level? Many people say: "I want to go to the next level." That's a good start. But a better question is: "How can I grow to the next level?" Wanting is intention. Growing requires action. The key is not making a giant leap. The key is making the first step so small and so easy that you can't talk yourself out of it. Growth happens when action follows intention. So instead of focusing on the next level, focus on the next step. Because every level you've ever reached started with one simple action. • Live inspired

Coaching at the highest level is a collaboration. It’s rarely about forehands and backhands. On the tour, it’s mental gymnastics. Pressure exposes character. Competition tests your training. With a Master’s degree in Sports Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, Jared blends elite performance coaching with a deep understanding of the competitive mind. We explore vulnerability (and the myth of “big boys don’t cry”), the idea of sharing emotions instead of wearing them, and how to “name it to tame it” rather than stuffing feelings down. David breaks down transformational vs transactional leadership, the true meaning of self-awareness and impulse control, and why your influence ultimately comes down to your self-regard, independence, and presence with empathy. Plus — one absolute gold-dust coaching question you’ll want to steal: “Why won’t you let me help you?” “If your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you’re not able to manage your distressing emotions, then no matter how smart you are, you’re not going to get very far.” — Daniel Goleman About David Cory - Founder & Leadership Development Coach David Cory is a leadership development coach, trainer, and consultant recognised for his expertise in applying emotional intelligence to improve individual and organisational performance.
