Episode summary: In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Rita Gupta, a board-certified family medicine physician and integrative medicine practitioner, to discuss why you don't have to choose between traditional medicine and holistic approaches when managing chronic pain. We explore the three types of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic, and neuroplastic), explore how fear and anxiety create real physical symptoms in the body, and tackle some controversial territory around vaccines and chronic illness. Dr. Rita shares her unique perspective as someone who's lived with chronic pain herself while working within both traditional and integrative medical models, and we discuss practical strategies like understanding your personal recovery times, the importance of pain education in changing beliefs, and why finding practitioners who see you as a whole human - not just a collection of symptoms - can be life-changing. Whether you're feeling stuck between medical approaches or struggling to make sense of conflicting health information, this conversation offers a balanced, nuanced perspective on creating your own integrated approach to healing.

Ep 97: Beyond Restrictive Diets: Real-World Nutrition Tips for EDS, POTS, and MCAS17 Aug 202500:49:44

Episode Summary: In this episode, registered dietitian Louisa O'Grady shares practical, evidence-based nutrition strategies for managing EDS, POTS, and MCAS without falling into restrictive diet patterns. Louisa, who lives with these conditions herself, debunks common myths about low histamine diets (they're meant to be temporary, not lifelong), introduces important tips like using belly bands for POTS symptom management during meals, and explains why your food reactions might actually be triggered by environmental factors like stress or barometric pressure changes rather than the food itself. She emphasizes an additive rather than restrictive approach to nutrition, offering practical solutions throughout the whole episode to manage histamine levels and strategic fiber introduction for gut health. Throughout the conversation, Louisa highlights the importance of individualized care, nervous system regulation, and working with qualified professionals who understand the complex interplay between these conditions and nutrition.

Episode summary:

In this episode, I talk with Dr. Jenny Tufenkina, a naturopathic physician who shares her framework of five root causes behind chronic fatigue and complex illnesses. Drawing from both her clinical experience and personal journey recovering from fatigue twice in her life, Dr. Jenny walks us through how the hormone triangle, chronic infections, toxic overload, mitochondrial dysfunction, and limbic system dysregulation can contribute to these conditions.

As someone currently addressing my own adrenal/hormone challenges, I appreciated her individualized approach that recognizes each person's unique situation. Dr. Jenny offers practical insights on identifying which root causes might be present in your case and potential paths forward, all while maintaining a compassionate perspective. For those interested in learning more, she's hosting a summit on chronic fatigue running April 11-18, 2025 with researchers and practitioners exploring these topics in depth.

Ep 86: Bigger than Pain: Insights on Improving Movement, Sleep, and Healing w/ David McGettigan 22 Mar 202500:51:41

Episode Summary:

In this episode, I chat with David McGettigan, an amazing pain and movement specialist who's been helping people for 15 years recover from chronic pain and other symptoms, like chemical sensitivity and insomnia. David works with folks who've been bounced around the healthcare system without finding real answers.

I love how he frames pain as an adaptation instead of a "dysfunction" - such a game-changer! We discuss the connection between sleep and pain (mind-blowing stuff about how poor sleep literally opens neural pathways to more pain), and how morning sunlight can reset your whole system.David shares his own journey with chronic pain and gives super practical advice about healing timelines - did you know tissue typically needs 6-8 week cycles to adapt? No wonder quick fixes don't stick!

What I appreciate most is how David balances solid science with real compassion - "evidence of safety" for your nervous system and pacing your recovery properly. If you're dealing with chronic pain or know someone who is, this conversation offers both hope and practical steps forward. David truly believes change is possible at any stage, and after talking with him, I do too!

Ep 5: Pain’s in the Brain, But Not In Your Head with Tyler Orr LPC22 Apr 202201:01:16

Show notes

  • How pain begins and ends in the brain - supported by science;
  • How our early attachments show up in our pain experiences;
  • The 6 different types of people, according to the Constructed Awareness (CA) framework;
  • What therapists learn in CA in order to better help clients;
  • Helping clients find resources;
  • Reprocessing memories

In this episode, we dive into the fascinating world of pain and its complex relationship with the brain. Drawing on the latest scientific research, we explore how pain signals begin and end in the brain, and how our early childhood attachments can shape our pain experiences. We also introduce the Constructed Awareness (CA) framework, which identifies six different types of people and sheds light on how our unique cognitive styles can impact our pain perception. Our guest, Tyler Orr LPC, the creator of CA, shares valuable insights on how therapists can use this framework to better support their clients and help them access the resources they need. We also discuss the importance of reprocessing memories and breaking free from the negative thought patterns that can exacerbate pain. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on the fascinating intersection of neuroscience and psychology.

Tyler runs a free monthly consultation group for therapists who are interested in this work and for those being trained in CA. To sign up, go to https://www.constructedawareness.com/ and look for the "Constructed Awareness Free Consultation.” The next one is May 12, 2022, and you don’t need to be trained in CA to attend, so definitely check that out. You can find all of Tyler’s trainings here as well.

A few extra things to note here: Therapists, if you want to join Tyler’s next Constructed Awareness training, it’s May 6-7 and 20-21 in 2022. Use the code DestinyWinters for $200 off.

And for everyone, Tyler gave some good book recommendations at the end. If you want to read more about the science behind pain, check out Unlearning Your Pain by Dr. Howard Shubner. I also really like Freedom from Pain by Peter Levine.

Tyler also has a 2-day training for purchase on his website called What Are You Noticing Now? Integrating EMDR and Constructed Awareness. That will be on July 22 and 23rd.

Episode summary: Samina Qureshi is a registered dietitian specializing in IBS management from a weight-inclusive perspective. She challenges the common approach of endless food elimination, revealing that the standard low FODMAP diet should only last 2-4 weeks, not months or years as many attempt. Samina explains why food sensitivity tests are largely unreliable and how restriction often worsens gut symptoms by disrupting motility and starving beneficial gut bacteria. Instead, she advocates for focusing on adding variety rather than eliminating foods, and recognizes that simply nourishing your body regularly is powerful nervous system work. For those caught in cycles of restriction and worsening symptoms, Samina offers a refreshing path forward that expands food choices while addressing individual digestive needs, proving that healing your relationship with food and finding relief from IBS symptoms can happen simultaneously.

Episode summary:

In this episode, therapist Miranda Campbell, LCSW, co-author of "The Attachment Makeover," joins host Destiny Davis LPC CRC to explore how attachment styles impact chronic illness management. Miranda explains that attachment styles aren't fixed and we can develop "earned secure attachment" through intentional work. She breaks down how anxious attachment (fear of disconnection), avoidant attachment (fear of closeness), and disorganized attachment (unpredictable push-pull dynamics) affect both patients and caregivers in illness contexts.

Drawing from her own experience with migraines, Miranda offers practical strategies for developing more secure patterns and adjusting expectations about what relationships can look like. The conversation highlights the cultural context of attachment wounds, particularly in BIPOC communities, and emphasizes that understanding these dynamics isn't about blame but creating pathways to more compassionate care relationships.

Episode summary: In this follow-up episode with registered dietitian Samina Qureshi, we explore her new clinical textbook that tackles something I see all the time in my practice - when chronic GI conditions create eating patterns that look disordered but have nothing to do with weight or body image. Samina and her team of 10 health professionals wrote this resource because they were seeing patients come in terrified of food, experiencing unexplained weight loss, not because they wanted to be thin, but because they were genuinely afraid of throwing up or having worsened GI symptoms. We talk about ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and how it shows up in the GI space, why it's so important to believe patients when they say certain foods cause pain even without a formal diagnosis, and how the goal isn't just telling someone to "eat and you'll feel better" - because how frustrating is that advice? Instead, it's about finding accessible ways to nourish their body while expanding their diet and helping them feel confident around food again. This conversation is valuable for both clinicians who want to understand these complex intersections and for anyone living with GI conditions who's been told their very real physical symptoms are just anxiety when they're actually doing what they can to keep their body safe.

Ep 80: Movement Shouldn't Make Your Body Feel Worse w/ Monica Blied, PhD, MACL, BSP20 Feb 202500:55:53

In this episode, Dr. Monica Blied and I have a real conversation about creating a healthier relationship with movement when living with chronic illness. Dr. Blied shares her personal journey with lupus, fibromyalgia, and later-diagnosed ADHD and autism, which led her to develop the free Faces of Health app offering mental health skills and somatic exercises. She provides a practical three-step approach to movement: using technology (like the FitOn app) for accessible workouts, embracing slow pacing rather than pushing too hard, and working out with friends for accountability.

Throughout the episode, we demonstrate simple chair yoga and range-of-motion exercises, emphasizing that movement shouldn't make your body feel worse. Dr. Blied highlights the importance of self-compassion, reminding listeners that progress isn't linear and that it's okay if your best looks different each day.

The episode concludes with a bonus announcement about a new body doubling group in the Mentally Well While Chronically Ill membership, where members can join together for PT exercises, cleaning, meal prep, and other activities that benefit from community support.

Ep 80: Movement Shouldn't Make Your Body Feel Worse w/ Monica Blied, PhD, MACL, BSP20 Feb 202500:55:52

Ep 79: Insurance, Support, Advocacy, and The Realities of a Child's Chronic Illness: 07 Feb 202500:55:26

Episode Summary:

In this episode, LPC Rhonda Thorington shares her dual perspective as a therapist and mother navigating her daughter's chronic illness. From advocating in medical settings to maintaining family bonds, she offers practical strategies for parents facing similar challenges. Learn about crucial resources most families don't know exist, including insurance benefits, financial assistance programs, and educational rights. This conversation goes beyond medical management to explore how families can thrive while facing chronic illness together.

Resources mentioned:

  • YouTube - search your specific condition and watch videos from actual medical professionals
  • Insurance nurse case managers: Insurance companies often offer nurse case managers for complex medical cases, and this is a service that is included in your plan, not an extra cost. These nurse case managers can help navigate the system and advocate for treatment.
  • Patient Advocates: Some patient advocates are very helpful in navigating the complexities of medical care, and if you find a good one, stick with them. If not, don't be afraid to ask for someone else. They are also provided through your insurance at no extra cost.
  • Pharmaceutical company programs: Pharmaceutical companies sometimes offer programs that can help offset the cost of expensive medications.
  • Non-profit arms of insurance companies: Some insurance companies have non-profit arms that provide money to families to cover services not covered by insurance. The United Healthcare Children’s Foundation is one example of this type of resource.
