S3.E1 - Publishing Trend Predictions for 202416 Feb 202401:02:15

We're back and we're kicking off the year with some predictions for what we think is going to be popular in the world of writing, books and publishing for 2024! Shoutout to our friends over at the WriteMentor Hub for all their helpful suggestions!

S2.E10 Trope Tier List 207 Jul 202300:55:05

To wrap up our second season, the loosely romance themed one, we're going back to the tier list. Tune in for lots of arguing about which trope goes where and whether we agree with where we put some of the tropes from season 1.

S2.E9 - Forced Proximity09 Jun 202300:43:58

Making two characters who would never otherwise spend time together is always a great recipe for conflict and intrigue, but there is a pretty intense dark-side to this one.

S2.E8 - Stalking as Romance02 Jun 202300:42:15

It's weird, creepy and rarely works but we get into the weeds with this one. This trope is pretty toxic.

S2.E7 - Miscommunication26 May 202300:42:05

It's a weird one to talk about because it only really comes up when it's done badly. Tune in to hear us try and define it, whilst constantly contradicting our own definitions but sort of, vaguely getting close to an understanding by the end. Maybe.

S2.E6 - Opposites Attract19 May 202300:41:18

Opposites Attract is a classic but does it need some sprucing up? Can it sometime be used as an excuse to cover up some troubling issues?

S2.E5 - Forbidden Love12 May 202300:40:09

We all know it from Romeo and Juliet, but we went a bit darker than I think any of us expected in this episode. Maybe it was forbidden for a reason!

S2.E4 - Grumpy and Sunshine05 May 202300:43:30

Always interesting to see people coming together, clashing and eventually overcoming their differences to bond and become closer than they could ever have imagined. Or is it?!

S2.E3 - Fake Dating28 Apr 202300:40:12

Fake dating and relationships come in more shapes and sizes than any of us realised. It's not just Noah Centineo movies!

S2.E2 - Enemies to Lovers21 Apr 202300:34:04

Enemies to Lovers to rivals to friends. It's an unending rollercoaster of twists and tales. Tune in to hear about how much we love this trope even though we know it can be very problematic!

S3.E9 - Sports Romance03 May 202400:58:11

This was a fun one! None of us have much experience with this genre and so it was a massive learning curve but I think it might have inspired us to pick up some Ice Hockey romance!

  • Naomi Gibson, author of Every Line of You, Game Over Girl
  • Melissa Welliver, author of The Undying Tower, My Love Life and the Apocalypse, Soulmates and Other Ways to Die
  • Jamie Greenwood, creator & host of the Write and Wrong Podcast
S2.E1 - Slow-Burn Romance14 Apr 202300:30:21

Well paced and satisfying or drawn out and boring. Hear all about how Melissa approached the slow burn romance in her brand new novel, 'My Love Life and the Apocalypse'.

S1.E10 - Trope Tier List 117 Mar 202300:59:09

To wrap up our first season, we're kicking off our tier list. Tune in for an extra long episode of us arguing about which grade to assign to each of the tropes we've talked about on this, our first season.

S1.E9 - Helpless Window Deaths03 Mar 202300:35:29

Heart-wrenching, infuriating or something else entirely? Here's one we'd never really thought about before but once we started down the rabbit hole, it turned out to be much deeper than expected.

S1.E8 - Badass Female Characters ft. Kesia Lupo24 Feb 202300:33:24

Special guest episode! Author and editor Kesia Lupo is here and she's put one of her most disliked to the team. It's the trope of super strong, badass female characters who cannot be stopped but often leave you feeling like they're missing something.

S1.E7 - Prophecies and Chosen Ones17 Feb 202300:35:35

"It’s one thing to think that you’re the center of the universe—it’s another thing entirely to have this confirmed by an ancient prophecy."

- Douglas Adams

S1.E6 - Forced Motherhood10 Feb 202300:34:16

Why is it that so many female characters have their journey totally redirected at the last second to make room for a pregnancy. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's perfect, but a lot of the time it feels like a character goes through an epic quest, overcoming odds and finding their truth to end up coming to a complete stop in order to have a baby and thus, complete a character arc that never existed.

S1.E5 - Orphans and Absentee Parents03 Feb 202300:39:03

Sometimes it can feel like there are more orphaned fictional characters than not. But is the trope really all that bad? Naomi and Melissa have both written characters with absentee parents in their books, and they're all for it!

S1.E4 - Mary Sue and Gary Stu27 Jan 202300:41:35

What started out as a parody of old school Star Trek fan fiction has transcended its humble origins and evolved into a term that is liberally used to describe hundreds of characters in books, television and movies. Let's get to the bottom of it, what is a Mary Sue and what's the issue?

S1.E3 - Killing Mentors20 Jan 202300:32:34

Shoutout to all of the mentor characters, risking their lives in service of a protagonist who would probably be lost without them! Tune in to hear us chat about the Sean Bean of character archetypes and our verdict on the trope of them always dying.

S1.E2 - Love Triangles13 Jan 202300:43:01

A problematic polygon of paramores. Tune in to find out which of us is team Love Triangle!

S3.E8 - Cosy Crime & Fantasy12 Apr 202400:55:52
