Ep. 260: The rise and fall of 2000s magazine Suede21 Jun 202400:26:43

Today I’m talking about Suede magazine – a magazine that came and went in a blaze of glory in the early 2000s but gave us just 4 issues.

The reason I’m talking about Suede is because while we only got 4 issues, that magazine absolutely became a new fashion bible for black women, women of colour, actually women of all skin colours.

In this episode I share more on Suede’s history inaugural issue, the team who made it happen and the huge impact the magazine had on black women and women of colour.

I discuss the rumours surrounding the magazine’s demise and I share an update I received via email from the magazine's former editor Suzanne Boyd.

Don’t forget my DMs are always open, so if you’d like to share an insight re Suede magazine, or anything else beauty related, find me @beautymepodcast on Instagram or @charisse_kenion on Threads.

Ep. 170: '90s Beauty Moments - Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna in 1995 movie Casino18 Dec 202200:09:38

Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about Sharon Stone’s magnificent portrayal of Ginger McKenna in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 film Casino.

In this episode I break down the retro looks we see in this film that’s based in the ‘80s, from the hair and makeup pros to my favourite beauty moments from the film. Apparently Sharon Stone was dead set on playing this character and I really think that comes through in the movie – it’s an absolute classic.

Ep. 169: '90s Beauty Moments - Missy Elliott's iconic video for 1997 song The Rain17 Dec 202200:09:47

If you’re a fan of ‘90s music then you need to check today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment: Missy Elliott’s video for The Rain, which came out in 1997, from her first album Supa Dupa Fly. Directed by the equally iconic director Hype Williams, this video is so ahead of its time and is a must-watch if you’ve never seen it before.

In this episode I break down the hair and beauty moments, including Missy's epic finger waves, and also share some insights into the black lipgloss and liner that we see in the video, which is also very on-trend today on social media.

Ep. 168: '90s Beauty Moments - R&B singer Aaliyah's video for her 1996 hit One In a Million16 Dec 202200:12:34

Aaliyah Dana Haughton released her second album, also called One In A Million in 1996 and with six hit songs coming from that album, it’s at that point in time that she really took over the charts and became a major inspiration for young black girls when it came to how they dressed and how they wore their hair and makeup.

Today's '90s Beauty Moment is all about the video for Aaliyah's single One In A Million because it's the perfect blend of '90s fashion, beauty, hair and music video influences.

Ep. 167: '90s Beauty Moments - how the Spice Girls and their Girl Power took over the world15 Dec 202200:08:03

Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about the power – the so-called Girl Power – of the Spice Girls, five women, chosen from hundreds to take on the boy bands of the mid-90s.

In this episode I break down the looks that the world would go on to expect from Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisolm and Victoria Beckham (formerly Victoria Adams.) I also explain the super simple reason that we would go on to refer to these adult women as Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Posh for the rest of their lives.

Ep. 166: '90s Beauty Moments - the iconic video for Don’t Let Go by En Vogue 199614 Dec 202200:05:48

Today’s '90s Beauty Moment is all about the striking beauty looks for En Vogue’s 1996 video for their single Don’t Let Go.

In this episode I break down the hair and beauty moments for all four band members: Cindy Herron, Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones and Terry Ellis and I also get into the truly quintessential ‘90s fashion looks each of them are wearing.

Ep. 165: '90s Beauty Moments - ‘Black Barbie’ and Queen of Rap Lil’ Kim’s ‘90s beauty influence 13 Dec 202200:11:55

For me, Lil’ Kim, AKA Kimberly Denise Jones, is someone who should get all the awards when it comes to being iconic across the board – the hairstyles you’ve played with, the makeup you’ve experimented with, even the clothes you’re wearing and the music you’re listening to – Lil’ Kim was arguably the blueprint for it all back in the ‘90s.

In this episode I’m firmly sticking with the Lil’ Kim of the ‘90s – one, because there’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Brooklyn rapper, and two, because amongst all that information, there is also the often discussed topic of her lack of self love, which some even refer to as internalised hate for how she looks.

So in this episode I’m focusing on the image that first caught our attention, and how she would go on to influence her fans, the music industry and the fashion houses.

I’ll be back with another in-depth episode though, so watch this space. In the meantime, I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?

Ep. 164: '90s Beauty Moments - Jennifer Aniston’s iconic haircut – The ‘Rachel’ from Friends12 Dec 202200:06:55

It’s a hairstyle that has its own Wikipedia page; that’s how iconic the Rachel haircut was. It was first seen on screen, on Aniston’s character Rachel Green in Friends in 1995, near the end of the first season in the episode entitled The One with the Evil Orthodontist and she wore it until the third season.

In this episode I focus on how big the influence of the cut was, and why Jennifer’s longterm hairdresser Chris McMillan designed it specifically for the star – even though she never loved it!

I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?

Ep. 163: '90s Beauty Moments - Skin from Skunk Anansie’s iconic bald-headed beauty11 Dec 202200:07:16

Skunk Anansie is a British rock band that shot to fame in the ‘90s, and from day one, all everyone could talk about was the striking lead singer, Skin, AKA Deborah Ann Dyer.

While I knew Skin had to be in this ‘90s series, I initially thought that I would be more focused on her more edgy makeup looks, like black lipstick and liner, but recently I saw the video for one of their hits, Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good) and I was blown away by a really pretty, ethereal take on ‘90s makeup. It’s not something you see much of when you examine the music videos of that decade, so I really wanted to include it in the series.

I’d love to know what you think too! Have you been enjoying this series?

Ep. 162: '90s Beauty Moments - Uma Thurman’s trend-setting beauty as Mia Wallace in 1994’s Pulp Fiction10 Dec 202200:10:53

Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is dedicated to the star of one of my all-time favourite films; Uma Thurman in 1994’s Pulp Fiction.

In this Quentin Tarantino classic, Uma plays newlywed Mia Wallace who’s definitely in the mood for trouble, and looks so good while doing it. The movie set off several beauty trends, and it also helped to catapult the success of Chanel’s Rouge Noir nail polish – the beauty brand’s biggest-selling product ever.

Ep. 161: '90s Beauty Moments - RnB singer Toni Braxton's 1993 Pixie haircut09 Dec 202200:05:37

Coupled with her deep contralto tones, RnB singer Toni Braxton's short hair became an iconic inspiration for black women the world over in 1993, and it's a look that she still wears today. In this episode I discuss the impact the Pixie cut had throughout the '90s, why Toni's take on the trend has been so enduring and why the Pixie cut is still a stylish go-to today.

Ep. 259: Unlocking new scent memories with Phlur, Charlotte Tilbury and more. Fragrance faves right now. 14 Jun 202400:24:35

This episode is a perfume special that features scents from Phlur, Charlotte Tilbury, Fine'ry - all new to me - plus one very special scent that's been my go-to for years.

Fragrance can evoke a memory or a mood in an instant and in that sense it’s really powerful, so in this episode I discuss embracing a scent wardrobe, rather than sticking with one 'signature scent' for life.

I’d love to know your favourite perfumes right now, so feel free to get in touch over in the DMs on Instagram @beautymepodcast or comment over on Threads @charisse_kenion.

If you enjoyed this episode please leave a review or rating wherever you listen as it really helps others to find the show!

Ep. 160: '90s Beauty Moments - Janet Jackson's Poetic Justice braids from the 1993 film08 Dec 202200:07:41

If you’re someone who ever gets your hair braided, then you will know exactly what this episode is about. Box braids have been a black girl go-to for decades, well, actually, thousands of years! But in 1993, when Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton wrote and directed Poetic Justice, he definitely had no idea that the most enduring conversation around this movie would arrive via his female star, singer Janet Jackson and her hair.

In this mini episode I break down the origin of so-called Poetic Justice braids and discuss how braided styles have been integral to not only black style, but also how tribes communicate who they are, where they're from and so much more.

Ep. 159: '90s Beauty Moments - Sade Adu and the original 'clean girl' aesthetic07 Dec 202200:07:58

If you're up on your social media trends, then you'll be familiar with the less-is-more vibe of the 'clean girl aesthetic' trend, but for many black and brown women, it's simply a more natural, pared-down approach to beauty that they have been enjoying for decades.

Despite many a content creator labelling the likes of Bella Hadid and Hailey Beiber as the originators of the 'clean girl' trend, for me, the original clean girl has to be Sade, lead singer of her eponymous band. Folasade Adu is a Nigerian-born British singer known for her velvety tones and clean beauty aesthetic - think red lip, hair in a bun and a pair of gold hoop earrings. In this episode I discuss the look and also touch on the concept of black beauty creators not always being given credit for starting new trends, in fashion, beauty or social media.

There is also a video to really show you what I'm talking about, which you can find on the @beautymepodcast Instagram or on my TikTok @charissekenion. In fact for each of these 25 '90s Beauty Moments podcasts there's a matching video!

Ep. 158: '90s Beauty Moments - Mary J Blige, Queen of Hip Hop soul and black beauty icon06 Dec 202200:11:11

If you love ‘90s makeup AND rnb then you need to check out today’s 90s Beauty Moment; I'm talking about Mary J Blige, AKA the Queen of Hip Hop Soul and an absolute icon for black women around the world when it came to hair, beauty and fashion throughout the '90s.

Between 1992 and 1999 Mary released 4 albums and with each album came new looks and new inspiration. Mary absolutely deserves her own full-length episode, so stay tuned for that! Ep. 157: '90s Beauty Moments - Demi Moore's nude pregnant body on the cover of Vanity Fair's August 1991 issue05 Dec 202200:07:31

Thirty years ago the image of a naked pregnant woman on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine caused outrage around the world. While it absolutely impacted how the pregnant body was seen, in this episode I question if we've really come that far.

Today, the likes of Serena Williams and Rihanna have publicly embraced their baby bumps for the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair, respectively, but yet, for every positive comment, there's always someone saying they feel disgusted and that a pregnant body is not something that 'should' be on show.

Ep. 156: '90s Beauty Moments - Sinéad O'Connor's political and personal reasons for her shaved head04 Dec 202200:08:58

TW: in this episode I will touch on themes of abuse so please skip to the next episode if that's not something you want to hear today.

In the mid 1980s, Sinéad O'Connor was just getting started with her music career, and a record exec asked her to consider growing her hair long and start wearing short skirts ‘like a girl’ as a way of ‘selling’ her music. The next day she walked into a barbershop and asked a young barber to make her look ‘like a boy.’

In this episode I break down the reasons Sinéad gave for her cutting her hair - reasons that changed between the '90s and when she later appeared on popular TV show Dr Phil in 2017.

Ep. 155: '90s Beauty Moments - Madonna’s 1990 Vogue video and why it’s important to ballroom culture03 Dec 202200:09:06

It’s the third of my 25 '90s Beauty Moments and today its’ Madonna’s music video for her 1990 single Vogue. I believe this video is so valuable to not only the history of music, but also to the New York counterculture of ballroom. Before this video, the pageantry of ballroom, including the style of dance, Vogueing, would not have been seen in the mainstream.

In this mini episode I break down just why this music video is so important and share information on the hair and beauty imagery we see, which is heavily influenced by artists and photographers from the 1940s.

I’ve also created a TikTok to go with this episode and each of the other 24 episodes so head to my account @charissekenion.

It’s the second of 25 '90s Beauty Moments and today I'm looking at the iconic wardrobe, hair and makeup for Madonna's world tour, Blond Ambition, which took place from April to August 1990. Alongside 24 other episodes, consider this my alternative gift guide, or Advent Calendar, as each day I'll be uploading a new minisode, alongside a dedicated TikTok too! In this episode I share insights into who worked on the hair and makeup for this 57-date tour and why the wardrobe, designed by Paris-based fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier has stood the test of time.  Let me know if you’ve enjoyed this episode and feel free to give us the gift of a 5-star rating over on Spotify, or write a review on Apple Podcasts. Ep. 153: Jennifer Aniston says she’s never felt better – so why was her Allure magazine cover so retouched? Why do magazines want us to look younger?02 Dec 202200:30:14

This episode is all about my love/hate relationship with the final print cover of Allure magazine. I’m sharing what I truly love about the shoot with Friends and Along Came Polly actress Jennifer Aniston, and I’m sharing why I’m still annoyed with magazines for their excessive reliance on Photoshop and retouching in general.

I’d really love to know what you think if you’ve seen the Jennifer Aniston Allure cover and if you think that retouching is just par for the course when it comes to celebrities and beauty media.

If you haven’t seen the cover, head to my TikTok to see what I’m talking about @charissekenion. Let me know your thoughts on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or feel free to share them via email at beautymepodcast@gmail.com. It’s the first of 25 '90s Beauty Moments and I’m starting with George Michael’s 1990 video for Freedom! 90.

In this mini episode I break down just why this music video was so iconic – and still is, 30+ years later. I’ll be back with 24 more similar mini episodes as part of my alternative Advent Calendar.

I’ve also created a TikTok to go with each of the 25 episodes so head to my account  @charissekenion to see how I bring each one to life with images and video from the ‘90s.

Ep. 151: The skincare I buy on repeat25 Nov 202200:22:12

This episode is all about the products that I always go back to. They might not have anything to do with a specific concern – they are simply the products that make my skin feel good or better – the kind of products about which I only have good things to say. If you’re a regular listener to BeautyMe you might have heard me mention a couple of them in the past so this episode will be further proof of just why I love them. Ep. 258: Beauty editor Kayla Greaves on thinking independently about black hair, slow mornings and Kacey Musgraves07 Jun 202400:59:02

This week I’ve got a very special guest, Kayla Greaves.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Kayla is a beauty journalist who lives in Brooklyn, New York and over the past 10 years she has made a name for herself as someone who speaks with authority when it comes to all things beauty.

Kayla is the former executive Beauty Editor of InStyle magazine and she’s written for the likes of Allure, Vogue and Elle.

In this episode we cover so much! We start out with skincare before Kayla shares her early beauty inspirations and also how she’s been embracing a slower approach to her mornings, and life in general.

Along the way Kayla speaks passionately about thinking independently when it comes to our hair, and also shares on her experiences of going from the corporate world to deciding her own schedule as a freelance beauty editor. Finally we end up discovering our shared love of music - specifically Kacey Musgraves.

This has to be one of my favourite interviews ever, so I'd love to know what you think!

As always my DMs are open over @beautymepodcast on Instagram, and you can also find me on Threads @charisse_kenion. Also, be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel because I've been uploading there too!

Ep. 150: Bleached brows, braids and Taylour Paige - the best beauty moments from the Savage X Fenty show Volume 418 Nov 202200:20:15

This episode is all about about what I liked and loved about the Savage X Fenty Volume 4 show and I’ll share some of the looks and how they were created and just my thoughts in general.

For me this was a heavily produced and edited take on the show and I totally get it's likely that that's what Rihanna and the team wanted to achieve with this fourth show. I just prefer the rhythm of the previous shows, a little less done. But I think I'm in a minority when it comes to that criticism and of course I have a ton of positive things to say too.

The main focus is the makeup, again headed up by the brilliant Fenty Beauty Global Makeup Artists Hector Espinal and Priscilla Ono, and I loved their metallic theme in particular  - such a major trend right now!

I'd love to know what you thought of the show so feel free to DM me @beautymepodcast on Twitter or Instagram and you can also check out my Volume 4 TikTok @charissekenion too. If you want a little more context then be sure to check out episode 149 where I break down the importance of the Savage X Fenty show and share my favourite makeup looks from the first three shows. Ep. 149: The best beauty moments from the Savage X Fenty shows so far and what we can expect from Volume 407 Nov 202200:24:21

This episode is all about the magic of the annual Savage X Fenty show that Rihanna and her team have been producing since 2019. I thought it could be fun to look back at its history and share some of the beauty looks from the first three shows as volume 4 is happening this week.

By the way, at the time of recording, I didn’t know that Johnny Depp might be featured in the show and even if I did, I wouldn’t really have gone into that story, purely because it just seems very murky as to who was in the right. How could we ever know?

So instead this episode focuses on key beauty looks and why the Savage Fenty show does more for body positivity than any other brand. I also predict the looks we might expect from Volume 4 so stay tuned and let me know what you’re looking forward to. If you’re already a fan of Savage Fenty you’ll love this episode, but if you’ve never checked it out before, you’ll find out why you should.

The show airs in over 240 countries, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from Wednesday November 9th.  Let me know how watching the Savage Fenty show makes you feel over at @beautymepodcast on Twitter and Instagram and check out my TikToks at @charissekenion. Ep. 148: Exploring body neutrality, beauty as currency and the end of the (traditional) influencer with beauty and lifestyle writer Ata-Owaji Victor04 Nov 202200:58:41

In today's episode I sit down with Ata-Owaji Victor, a London-based beauty and lifestyle writer of Nigerian descent who writes for the likes of Black Ballad, Elle and Vogue and is on a mission to encourage discussions around the politics of beauty.

Ata briefly touches on her ADHD experience and brings up so many thoughtful subjects, such as why we work the way we do; why work and labour are so prized and praised in society and why she chooses to nurture a neutral view of her body.

Her mother comes up a lot in this conversation, and it’s clear to see she not only influences how Ata sees her own body but she’s also the one who taught her how to choose the right foundation. We discuss how makeup is all about expression and why it might be time to reclaim the word ‘beautiful’.

Finally, if you’re a budding beauty writer, listen out for Ata’s offer of advice – you can find her email address on her Instagram profile @ataowaji if you want to reach out.

Ep. 147: From London to Los Angeles – beauty trends and wellness tribes with freelance beauty editor Ava Welsing-Kitcher28 Oct 202200:34:18

This episode sees the return of my friend and former guest Ava Welsing-Kitcher. She moved from London to Los Angeles earlier this year and I really wanted to catch up with her to find out what, if anything, was different when it came to beauty trends between the two cities.

During our chat we touch upon trends in makeup and plastic surgery and Ava shares how she's enjoying certain aspects of the wellness culture that LA is well-known for, but not loving some of the less than friendly vibes from certain 'tribes' of gym-goers and grocery shoppers. Ava also shares her musings over how LA is different to California as a state, and we discuss how the LA sun does so much for her mind and morning routine.

Ep. 146: The future of Allure magazine as it goes digital-only; why Brits aren’t bothered about Sephora, yet and Taylor Swift’s Midnights25 Oct 202200:20:40

This week it’s a beauty news round-up; I’m talking about the latest print issue - the penultimate print -  of Allure and dipping into the history of the magazine, and I’ll be talking about the early reactions to Sephora’s online store here in the UK and briefly wondering what Taylor Swift’s visuals for her new album Midnights could look like.

I had to dedicate much of this episode to Allure because I'm a longterm fan who's seen it change hands from founder Linda Wells, to former Nylon editor Michelle Lee, to the current editor in chief, Jessica Cruel. Discussing print and people of colour comes up and I'd love to know your thoughts on the conclusions I make. Sometimes it feels like the major magazines bring in people of colour way too late, which leaves them in a vulnerable position, as if they alone have to save the title. Let me know what you think! Tag me when you're listening over on Instagram @beautymepodcast or reach out to me on Twitter @beautymepodcast. I also give my thoughts on the latest print cover over on my TikTok, @charissekenion.

I also touch on Sephora's arrival in the UK - for now it's online only and it's getting a lot of criticism, but I'm intrigued to see if they're going to bring in same-day delivery for us as well as the States - and I wonder what kind of visuals we can expect as Taylor Swift's album Midnights takes over the internet and makes Spotify history. At the point of recording Taylor had only released several lyric videos and one video for Anti-Hero, but this morning I've seen she's released a video for Bejeweled.

Ep. 145: Donyale Luna, the first black supermodel21 Oct 202200:43:05

This episode is going to be a timeline of the life, impact and death of Donyale Luna, the first black supermodel.

We’ll be touching on her life growing up in an abusive household in the 1940s, becoming a model during a time when racism was alive and well within the fashion industry and 1960s America as a whole, and we’ll be looking at how her rise to the top led to an inevitable drug addiction and a lonely death at the age of 33.

If you’ve been following my Tiktoks you’ll know that I’ve been talking a lot about the concept of the supermodel lately and really trying to break down what makes a supermodel. Despite labelling the concept as a ‘90s phenomenon, I think there were early signs of this phenomenon, and that Donyale was actually the first black supermodel, particularly because of how she impacted the fashion industry as a whole. That’s just one of the reasons I wanted to dedicate an episode to her; I feel like she’s often a footnote in the history books and there are so many inaccuracies in much of the content that’s created around her life.

So, this is kind of my love letter to Donyale, an audio memorial that hopefully fills in any gaps for her fans and brings her to life for a whole new audience.

This episode probably wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for the work of journalist and author Ben Arogundade. His book: Beauty’s Enigma; the story of Donyale Luna – The First Black Supermodel – was hard to track down but was one of the few solid accounts that I could rely on for real facts. I’ve left a link to it for you below if you’re interested.

I’d love to know what you think of this episode? Had you heard of Donyale before? Do you like these historical look backs at beauty? Let me know over @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter and definitely look out for some Donyale-themed TikToks over at @charissekenion. I’ll also be saving a Donyale highlight on my Instagram so you can see much more of her looks and style. I’ve also written about the research process for this episode at beautymenotes.substack.com.

Thank you so much for listening – don’t forget to follow and subscribe and please do leave a 5-star review if you liked this episode! See you next time.

Ep. 144: Talking trends, talent, trolls and Tumblr with forecaster Mandy Lee AKA Oldloserinbrooklyn13 Oct 202201:01:39

Today’s guest is Brooklyn, New York-based writer, trend forecaster, analyst and content creator Mandy Lee. If you’re a regular TikTok user, then you’ll likely know her as @oldloserinbrooklyn. Since focusing on fashion content in February 2021, Mandy has built up a 400,000 following in a bid to bring real research and context to her trend critiques.

I really wanted to get her on the pod to basically be nosy about what life is like for a trend forecaster, so of course we're talking about her morning routine and skincare - turns out she's a major Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 fan. We also get into the murky world of plagiarism and Mandy shares her prediction for the next IT model. Clue: her mother is on one of the Real Housewives shows...

Please note: there are a couple of expletives in there, and we briefly mention eating disorders.

Thank you so much for listening. I would love to know what you think; do you think trends still matter? Did our chat get you thinking about whether you’re the cute girl, the hot girl or something entirely different? Ep. 142: Beauty Flashback: What beauty trends were we reading about in British Vogue in 2002?30 Sep 202200:28:34

This week I’m taking it back, all the way back to a 2002 copy of British Vogue, to look at how we used to talk about beauty.

I've always been a big magazine collector, especially when it comes to the international editions of Vogue, and lately I've been drawn to flicking through old issues for inspiration. What I found in this 2002 issue were adverts for Dior mascara (pre DiorShow) and Estee Lauder perfume; beauty reports and articles that looked back at the Past Masters of Makeup, as well as a piece written by Business of Fashion Editor at Large Tim Blanks, about the demise of the Supermodel.

Listen in as I flick through the pages, from the front cover onwards, and reflect on how trends always seem to come back; even the current 'sad girl' downturned eye trend was around 20 years ago apparently.

I’d love to know what you think so let me know if you enjoyed sitting down with me over a vintage copy of Vogue. You can DM me on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast and you can also find a special TikTok in this episode over at @charissekenion. I'm also going to share the images from the magazine on my Instagram Stories so be sure to head there and take a look! Ep. 141: Ami Cole beauty finally arrives in the UK, new Byredo Liquid Lip Vinyls and the magnificence of makeup artist James Kaliardos26 Sep 202200:21:08

This week it’s a chatty, newsy kind of episode. I’m talking about Ami Cole products finally arriving in the UK (whoop!), thinking about buying the new Liquid Lipstick Vinyl range from Byredo and discussing the value of It Girl Lori Harvey’s makeup artist James Kaliardos.

James is the original multi-hyphenate, a major player in beauty, and for some reason, when Lori referred to him as simply her 'makeup artist', during her recent get ready with me for Vogue's YouTube, I got a tiny bit upset. So, I decided to create an episode - and a newsletter, and a TikTok - to shed some light on James' impact on the worlds of fashion, beauty and art.

You can sign up for that newsletter for free, here: beautymenotes.substack.com

I’d love to know your thoughts on this episode and by the way, I’m always open to your suggestions when it comes to content and guests for future episodes! Ep. 257: The Week in Beauty: Youthforia's weak AF statement on inclusivity is too little, too late04 Jun 202400:16:08

It's a Week in Beauty episode and it's all about the latest Youthforia update. The brand keeps fumbling when it comes to inclusive shades and the entire beauty community has been waiting for an apology over its 'black pigment in a bottle' foundation for over a month.

They've finally made a statement on their Instagram page, and it's not really what anyone was hoping for. By the way, if you want to see the visual version of this episode, head to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@CharisseKenionYT

I’d love to know what you think – do we even need to care anymore or is Youthforia cancelled for good?

Ep. 140: Assessing your happiness levels and why pivoting can be a super power with Blogosphere founder and CEO Alice Audley23 Sep 202200:45:36

This week’s guest is Alice Audley, founder of Blogosphere, an online magazine and events agency that also has its own podcast: Serious Influence.

London-based Alice has a background in print journalism but decided to ditch her job to launch Blogosphere in 2013. Since then it's gained the respect of the influencer community and has become known as a media company that respects the craft of the blogger, the vlogger and the creator.

In this episode we dig into how content creation has changed and discuss the criticism that some creators attract once they decide to go full time. We talk about authenticity and personality, and I also try to get to the heart of why Alice is so hard-working.

Just a quick heads-up: there is a slight echo on my side for the first 10 minutes of this chat. I really do apologise but hope you can stick with it as the conversation truly is valuable.

Be sure to follow Blogosphere on Instagram at @blogosphere_magazine and check out series 5 of their podcast Serious Influence. Let me know what you think over in my DMs on Instagram or Twitter @beautymepodcast or follow charissekenion on TikTok to see my beauty breakdowns. See you next time!

Ep. 139: Why blocking people is good for social media growth with TikTok beauty analyst Lily Twelftree of Barefaced Media17 Sep 202200:39:01

This week’s guest is Lily Twelftree, a Junior Marketer and part-time graphic design student based in Sydney, Australia who has an amazing ability to analyse trends in beauty and then make them make sense to the rest of us.

I can’t remember how I first found her account, Barefaced Media, but she was an instant follow, as her approach to analysis really appealed to my own inner nerd.

Since we recorded this episode Lily has seen her best performing TikTok yet, amassing over 450,000 views so it definitely makes sense to have her on at such an early stage in her TikTok career. I wanted to find out what made her start her account, ask her about the most challenging aspects of social media and how content creation fits around her day job.

Thanks so much for listening - definitely go check out Lily's work on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@barefacedmedia. Be sure to follow BeautyMe on Spotify or subscribe on Apple Podcasts so you never miss an episode - and feel free to leave a 5-star review! Ep. 138: How to make the content you want to make and finding your voice with multi-hyphenate beauty creator Ehlie Luna09 Sep 202200:42:21

This week it’s a guest interview with New York-based makeup artist and all-round creative Ehlie Luna.

For me Ehlie was the perfect guest for an episode that's all about evolving and finding your voice. She first came onto the show in May 2021, and at the time she was adjusting to taking a break from working in makeup for the New York City Ballet, and had thrown herself into full-time content creation. She really dropped some truth bombs in that episode, so I had to get her back on to find out how she's evolved her content. Once again, she drops some essential nuggets for anyone who's a creator but also, anyone who just wants to get more from their life.

Let me know what you think! I really hope you found Ehlie as inspiring and insightful as I did and I’d love to know if you’ve gone through your own inner glow up over the past year. DM me at @beautymepodcast on Twitter or Instagram or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Be sure to check out Ehlie’s work at https://www.instagram.com/ehlieluna/ on Instagram and https://www.tiktok.com/@ehlieluna on TikTok. See you next time.

Ep. 137: A Conflicted Breakdown of Linda Evangelista's British Vogue September Cover Shoot02 Sep 202200:32:26

As promised on Instagram, in this episode I'm going to go through the stunning September issue of British Vogue, with THE supermodel, Linda Evangelista on the cover. For this shoot, the Canadian super reunited with equally iconic photographer Steven Meisel, to create some truly fantastical images. But, as a photographer and a Linda fan, I've been torn about this shoot. Because while Linda looks stunning, a lot has been done to turn back time, to show us a Linda that existed decades ago. It's not that retouching in itself is the problem; but, when viewed alongside the interview with the supermodel, where she expresses that she no longer wants to see herself in a mirror, the images bring up a troubling disconnect.

So in this episode I break down what makes a September issue so special, who the Big Five of modelling were back in the '90s and then hone in on the efforts made to create what is undoubtedly a dreamy love letter to an iconic fashion figure.

Ep. 136: Shady aestheticians, self-tan that can change your skin colour and America’s Next Top Model’s toxic beauty standards29 Aug 202200:35:58

This week I’m diving into three key beauty stories that have basically annoyed a lot of us, or, if not you, me!

The three stories I’m focusing on are a shady aesthetician who Photoshopped an actress from Stranger Things to look 'prettier', the toxic beauty standards that Tyra Banks and her America’s Next Top Model team fed to us back in the 2000s and the Bali Body self-tanner that’s allowing white women to change their race while never having to deal with racism or stereotypes. I'd love to know your thoughts on this episode, so feel free to get in touch @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter and be sure to follow me on TikTok @charissekenion to see some video content on this toxic topic and more. Ep. 135: The Products I use for Glowing Skin all year round19 Aug 202200:17:18

This week I’m sharing my favourite products that keep my skin glowing all over, all year round. I know for a lot of people, glowing limbs and collarbones are only really a thing when the summer months roll around but for me, as someone with brown skin, it’s always been about enhancing my skin tone. Just this week I started to see the Autumn press releases coming in - and I got my first Christmas beauty release! - but none of them really seem to be grasping that some of us like to glow all year round. It’s like Summer is for glowing and Autumn is for covering up, but surely that depends on where you are in the world and what your preferences are?

This episode is split into prep products, which is all about exfoliation, and enhancement, from hydration to adding a hint of shimmer. I definitely share some all-time favourites and cult classics in there, but I was also sent a few products to try from Fenty Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury and Ole Henriksen, so I'll give you my honest reviews on everything. However, every single product in this episode is something I actually love! Let me know your favourites over on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com. If you enjoyed this episode please do like, subscribe and follow - that way you'll never miss another episode! Thanks so much for listening, below is the full list of products mentioned.

Ep. 134: My top 3 non-beauty podcasts: Jay Shetty's On Purpose, Recho Omondi's The Cutting Room Floor and Maintenance Phase17 Aug 202200:21:03

This week I really wanted to share three podcasts that influence me every single week; Jay Shetty's On Purpose, fashion designer Recho Omondi's The Cutting Room Floor and Maintenance Phase, an anti-wellness show hosted by Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes.

While Jay Shetty inspires me to grow and create the life I want, Maintenance Phase is the podcast that makes me question everything health-related and The Cutting Room Floor is an exercise in research and reflection, with a fashion angle.

I wanted this episode to be an insight into what I love and I really hope you love them too! Be sure to let me know – do you already listen to these podcasts? Have you got some favourites to recommend to me? I’d love to know so feel free to DM me @beautymepodcast or email beautymepodcast@gmail.com. I’ll see you next time, thank you again for listening. Ep. 133: Take an Enneagram Personality Test with me 05 Aug 202200:38:55

Something a bit different this week! All throughout the pandemic lockdowns I kept hearing more and more about various types of personality tests. Everyone seemed to be talking about INFJs and ENTJs or whether they were a number 4 with a Bear wing and I had NO clue what was going on! More recently, one of my favourite YouTubers, Hindz did a personality test on his channel and I started to think that it could be an intriguing way to perhaps learn something new about myself. I’ve left a link to Hindz’s one below if you want to check it out.

Personality tests date back to the 1920s and the one that’s most often used lately seems to be the Enneagram. It’s based on a typology system that describes a human personality as a number of interconnected personality types, with 9 types, 27 subtypes and 3 basic centres.

So that’s the test I’ll be taking, and I used a website called Truity, linked below. Feel free to take the test along with me via the link and definitely let me know if you do!

Ep. 132: Hannah Harris, creator of the @browngirlhands Instagram on diversity in beauty, her creative process and the cost of a college education 29 Jul 202200:41:29

Few people have made as much of an impact on the beauty industry, at just 21 years old, as Hannah Harris. The Florida-born creative launched a ground-breaking Instagram account in the summer of 2020 and nothing was the same again when it came to diversity in the beauty industry. The account @browngirlhands showed brands what they hadn't been showing and since that moment, Hannah has become known as the go-to creator for brands who truly want to serve all communities.

Recently graduated with a degree in The Business of Beauty and Fragrance, Hannah has just started working for cult beauty brand Summer Fridays, so in this episode we talk about how she got to where she is and what she's excited for next.

Hannah also opens my eyes to the sheer cost of education in America and shares how she had to follow her gut when it came to choosing the right college for her.

Don’t forget to check out @browngirlhands on Instagram and you can follow Hannah’s personal journey @hannahharris__ Thanks so much for listening – let me know what you think, send me a DM @beautymepodcast. Ep. 131: How Ashley Nelson of Restroom Rituals maintains authenticity, privacy and a sense of humour as a beauty creator22 Jul 202200:52:40

This week’s guest is someone I’ve wanted to have on for a while now and Ashley Nelson, AKA Restroom Rituals was worth the wait. Ashley has built up a 13k Instagram following since launching her irreverent and honest profile just two years ago; a fact that I find unbelievable as Ashley was so clearly destined to be very public-facing, but I've also learned that she likes to keep her social and personal separate.

In this episode I find out more about LA-based Ashley’s entertaining persona, how she developed a passion for beauty at a very young age and I also put her through a really quickfire product round so be sure to wait for that at the end.

I hope you love this episode; if you do, please go ahead and rate or review the show anywhere you like to listen. Let me know if you already follow Ashley by the way, and if you don’t go check her out @restroomrituals. You can also find me @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter.

Ep. 130: What does the future of content creation look like? With UK Alopecia activist, creator, model and wig maker Gina Knight15 Jul 202200:51:29

This week’s guest is one of the UK’s original hair bloggers and award-winning wig maker, Gina Knight – you might know her as Gina The Wig Witch, and if you’ve been on the internet for a while, you might have known her as Naturalbelle. Based in Reading, UK, Gina has been blogging since 2008 and launched her wig design company in 2016 as a way to support her love for creating content built on community.

I've met Gina in real life; she has the most amazing smile, is quick to laugh but will always keep it very real. She's also very open with her experiences, from growing up with white parents, to motherhood to accepting and embracing hair loss. Believe me there are so many things I want to talk with Gina about, and we'll get to that, but for this episode we're specifically focusing on the future of content. It all started with a conversation in the DMs that started with a British Beauty Council webinar held in partnership with Meta (owner of Facebook, WhatsApp etc).

The webinar focused on how businesses could use influencers in the future, and often the subject of virtual influencers came up. For Gina and a few others who came into my DMs that morning, some of the subject matter felt disconcerting and disheartening. So I invited Gina on for a chat and this what happened!

Let me know what you think; if you're listening on Spotify I've posted a poll for you to get involved in. Or you can DM me while you're listening @beautymepodcast or feel free to email beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Thanks for listening and if you enjoyed this episode please give it a rating or review!

Ep. 129: Why do we still use Photoshop to retouch beauty images? 08 Jul 202200:15:40
Note: I know I shared on social that this week's episode was going to be with a guest but the audio came out really poor. So, I’ve been thinking about the concept of retouching lately and I’ve been wondering, as a photographer, beauty writer and consumer, do we really need it?  When Photoshop was first launched by Adobe in 1990, the founders thought it might sell a few hundred copies a month but today it would be challenging to find un-retouched beauty imagery, whether that's in a brand campaign or on the cover of a magazine.  In this episode I question our motives for relying on retouching software; I wonder if it's making us pretty, or just pretty boring? I bring up the fact that activist Sasha Pallari has had a huge effect on the advertising industry with her #FILTERDROP hashtag, resulting in brands being encouraged to work with influencers who don't use filters in ads. If this can happen with social media, why hasn't it happened with the publishing industry? CORRECTION: in the episode I incorrectly label Sasha's hashtag as #NoFilter. I really apologise for this and I am so annoyed with myself! Throughout the episode I focus on three different cover shoots that have looked super retouched to me, featuring Rihanna, Naomi Campbell and most recently, Beyonce. I'd love to know what you think; do you think retouching is just part of beauty and media? Do you want to see real skin? Do you think I'm over-reacting?  Let me know over in the DMs @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. If you enjoyed this episode be sure to rate and review it and share it with a friend! Ep. 128: Fat Mascara co-host Jennifer G. Sullivan on staying curious yet cynical about beauty and what makes the perfect podcast guest01 Jul 202200:46:09

This week’s guest is New York-based Jennifer G. Sullivan, a beauty journalist with 20+ years experience and the co-host of one of the biggest beauty podcasts EVER, Fat Mascara.

Alongside Jessica Matlin (Director of Beauty at luxury online retailer Moda Operandi) Jenn started Fat Mascara back in 2016. More than 400 episodes later they have this really balanced approach to discussing the beauty industry and it’s easy to see why the podcast is so popular.

In this episode I get to flip the interview process around - after being on Fat Mascara myself in the past - and dive into Jenn’s beauty experiences and experiments. Of course I ask her about her favourite beauty products right now so stay tuned for that.

Along the way we discuss everything from foreskins in Jenn’s favourite serum to travel, eighties influences and she also shares some personal insights into how the pandemic affected her family.

I know you're going to enjoy this, and if I'm right, please rate and review the show anywhere you like to listen! Be sure to check out Jenn on Instagram as well as Fat Mascara and feel free to tag me when you're listening. See you next time.
