What happens when the person who planned everything for you dies at 38?

In this episode of A Taste of Financial Planning, we sit down with Emma Gray, founder of Rainbow Hunting, former wills and probate solicitor, and widow.

  • Why powers of attorney are not just for later life

  • The balance between living fully now and planning responsibly for the future

  • How financial planning can protect the people you love from chaos

A Taste of Financial Planning - Lee Spencer - The Rowing Marine09 Feb 202600:59:53
Lunch with Lee Spencer: Rowing Oceans, Climbing Mountains, and Finding Purpose

In the first episode of A Taste of Financial Planning, hosts Dennis Hall and Sarah Steele sit down for lunch with former Royal Marine, world record-breaking ocean rower and author, Lee Spencer.

Over a Caribbean-inspired lunch and a bold glass of Syrah, Lee shares the remarkable story of how he became The Rowing Marine. From a life-changing injury to crossing the Atlantic solo, climbing Kilimanjaro with his daughter, and even testing kit for NASA.

The conversation moves between resilience, purpose, loss and of course, money. Lee talks candidly about growing up in Dagenham, his family's financial struggles, and how those experiences shaped his views on security, success and satisfaction.

There's honesty, humour and debate as Dennis and Lee discuss what money is really for: chasing wild dreams, building a legacy, or simply feeling free.

On the menu

Dennis served a Caribbean-inspired menu, starting with a rum-based cocktail. The main course featured beef short rib cooked sous vide for 40 hours, glazed with rum, sugar, soy and lime zest, and served with coconut plantain purée, sweet potato and steamed broccoli.

Dessert: Rum, coconut and lime posset with toasted coconut flakes
Wine pairing: Porseleinberg Syrah 2023 — rich, spicy and a perfect match for the bold flavours

In this episode, we talk about:
  • Growing up with money worries and how early habits form

  • Camaraderie and discipline in the Royal Marines

  • Record-breaking adventures and learning from adversity

  • Whether money is for living or leaving a legacy

  • How planning for the future helps you live more fully in the present

  • Debt, lessons from parents, and generational attitudes to money

  • Happiness, purpose, and the things money can't buy

Do You Have Time For Financial Planning?17 Sep 202400:23:44

How much time do you think you spend doing nothing?

A recent Duolingo poll revealed that UK adults spend an average of 26 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 doing... well, nothing! That's about 12 hours a week. Think about it—moments like:

Watching TV
Waiting for the kettle to boil
Waiting for a delivery
Scrolling aimlessly online

In this season of The Century Plan podcast, we're exploring what's really holding us back. One of the most common reasons people give for not focusing on their financial planning is a lack of time.

But in our latest episode, we challenge that idea and take a closer look at how we actually spend our time. Is it really about not having enough hours in the day—or something else?

Join us as Dennis Hall breaks down how to make time for your financial planning and shares practical tips to help you get started, no matter how busy life feels.

Listen now and discover how to take control of your financial future in just a few small steps.

Don't Pay Too Much - Why You Need To Review Your Contracts18 Jun 202400:26:06

In the penultimate episode of Season 3, Sarah and Dennis discuss the importance of reviewing premiums and checking charges on financial contracts.

We receive annual alerts when our car and home insurance is due for renewal. But our life assurances and savings plans tend to run quietly in the background. The direct debit leaving the account each month without much thought.

Why aren't we paying more attention?

Dennis and Sarah discuss:

  • Old with-profits bonds set up in good faith delivering shockingly poor returns
  • Life assurance contracts with overly high premiums
  • Pension plans invested in sub-optimal default funds
  • Investments subject to charges which significantly reduce their long-term growth

With over 35 years in financial services, Dennis has all too often come across people whose finances have been detrimentally affected due to lack of review.

When was the last time you reviewed yours?

How Much Does Retirement Cost - How Do You Work Out If You Have Enough?06 Feb 202400:28:02

In Episode 2 of Season 3 we reach one of the most common questions.... How Much Do I Need To Retire?

It's not a one-size-fits-all all situation. Sarah and Dennis talk over considerations and formulas that can be used to help gain a figure.

What kind of retirement are you planning?

How much does that cost?

How much do you have in assets?

Do you know how your workplace pension is invested?

How and when can you afford to start adding to your pension pot?

How much is your state pension? Did you register to gain credits while a stay at home parent?

Do Your Loved Ones Know About Your Finances? - Don't Leave It Too Late To Communicate28 Nov 202300:31:59

Don't leave it too late.... To have the conversation.

Do your loved ones know about your finances?

Do they know how and where to access your money, investments, and financial affairs?

Have you written a will to safeguard your wishes?

Dennis and Sarah don't shy away from talking about what is often a taboo subject. During this episode, we hear real-life case studies about how people have been impacted by not having conversations before tragedy strikes. If you care for the people around you, start the conversation.

Balanced Portfolios Are Sub-Optimal - Stop Focusing On Volatility!14 Nov 202300:16:39

Controversial opinion alert!

Balanced portfolios are sub-optimal.

Well, it may be controversial for some, but in this episode, Dennis explains how cashflow planning and evidenced-based investing shine a light on the shortfalls of a balanced approach.

Risk profile questionnaires have been widely used since the late 90s, as a tool to establish our attitude to risk. But they're not a regulatory requirement. And they tend to focus on our reaction to volatility which, in turn, drives us towards the "safer" option.

But why are they sub-optimal? Why should we be questioning their validity? And what should we be discussing with our financial planner for a more rounded approach?

Reacting to Market Volatility or Keeping The Faith? Why You Should Hold Your Nerve17 Oct 202300:22:12

In this episode, Sarah and Dennis discuss whether we should react to market volatility.

In times of economic downturn, it can be hard to keep the faith and stick to your long-term financial plan.

  • Should we be holding our nerve?
  • How should we react to high interest rates, even higher inflation, geo-political issues and media doom-mongering.
  • Why wouldn't we rush to move our money to a guaranteed rate savings account?

Dennis delves into the current economic situation and explains how data, history, and his personal experience of previous crashes, continue to support the long-term view.

Health is Wealth: The Other Side of Retirement Planning01 Jul 202500:52:17

In our second special summer episode of The Century Plan, we step outside the world of finance, but only just.

Dennis Hall and Sarah Steele are joined by Toby Swallow, a former world champion powerlifter turned strength coach, who now calls himself a health pension planner. His mission? Helping people build the physical reserves they'll need for a longer, more independent life.

We explore the powerful parallels between financial and physical planning, from building long-term reserves to avoiding crisis-driven decisions. Toby shares personal insights, practical steps, and a clear message: wealth alone won't protect you from frailty.

Whether you're planning for retirement, already there, or working with clients who are, this episode will challenge how you think about health, wealth, and what it really means to prepare for the future.

In this episode:

  • Toby's journey from powerlifting champion to health coach

  • What it means to build your "health pension"

  • The connection between VO2 max, bone density, and longevity

  • Why functional fitness matters more than aesthetics

  • How to start building physical reserves — at any age

  • The cost of waiting until it's too late

"Just because you look fit doesn't mean you're ready for what ageing brings. We plan financially, why not physically?"

What's Holding You Back?18 Mar 202500:36:33

In this season finale of The Century Plan, we wrap up our exploration of what often holds people back from engaging in financial planning. Throughout this season, we've tackled several common barriers and uncovered ways to overcome them. Here are some key factors we discussed:

  • Difficulty connecting with our future selves: Many people struggle to envision their future and prioritise present desires over long-term goals.
  • Perfectionism: The fear of making the "wrong" decision or not having all the perfect information can prevent action.
  • Lack of time: We explored whether people truly don't have time for financial planning or if procrastination is the real issue.
  • Decision overwhelm: With so many options available, the inability to make decisions can lead to inaction.
  • Not knowing where to start: Financial planning can feel like a huge, overwhelming task, and not knowing where to begin stops many from taking action. We give you five actionable steps to help.
  • Emotional barriers: Past financial mistakes or the emotional attachment to money can prevent people from taking the next step.
  • Cost concerns: Many people hesitate to invest in financial planning due to concerns over cost, despite the potential for long-term savings.

If any of these resonate with you, you're not alone. Tune into this episode for a recap of the season and tips on how to get started with your own financial planning journey.

Financial planning fees can sometimes seem unclear—hourly rates, fixed fees, percentages, subscriptions—so in this episode, we provide clarity. We explain how different charging models work, what to consider when choosing a planner, and how working with the right professional can help you make informed financial decisions that support your future.

We also discuss:

✔️ The impact of fees on your long-term investments
✔️ Why an initial conversation with a planner should be free of charge
✔️ The reassurance and structure that financial planning provides

As Dennis puts it: "Good financial planning helps you stay on track, even when the unexpected happens."

If cost has been a concern, this episode will help you understand how to assess value and make confident decisions about your financial future.
