Ep.152: Jobless for the Holidays, Prime's Time Outage, and the Study of My Life13 Dec 202100:54:42

This week, we're talking about the layoff heard around the world. The CEO of Better.com laid off 900 employees in the most savage of ways... on a zoom call. So how is it that someone feels that disassociated with the employees under them that they find find that behavior acceptable? The CEO spoke out saying many of these employees were taking advantage of working from home, and being lazy on the company dime. And while that may be true, it does appear pretty rough and relentless to send that many people home for the holidays in the most impersonal of ways. Is this the new norm in the age of work from home? We discuss.

And then, Amazon Web Services suffers a major outage for roughly an entire workday, showcasing the vast amount of ground covered by AWS. Everything from Amazon deliveries to home security, web hosting platforms and even Netflix and Disney Plus were impacted. Is it safe to trust so much digital infrastructure to just a few seemingly-infallible companies? And what are the repercussions of this outage moving forward? It's something that has the potential to change the industry, and we dive into it.

Next, it's exam season. So, are you ready for the real world? Because it's totally different. We chat about our experience with high school and college exams, whether they prepared us for the real challenges of life, and while the public and higher education systems are deserved of an entire overhaul to get us ready for life's curveballs.

A lot to talk about! Let's go ahead and get into it!

Ep.151: What Dreams Are Made Of!06 Dec 202100:59:06

This week, we asked YOU what's been on your mind and had you talking! We asked on our Facebook page to give us your topic suggestions.  Several of you responded with the topics, life events, and more that's had your attention, and it inspired us to talk about them. It's something we plan to continue to answer and follow-up on in the next several weeks, so you'll want to stay tuned for your chance to respond.

We begin this new format with a topic submitted by Darien Mack. It reads:

"Something that has been weighing heavily on my mind lately is dream interpretations. Recently, I had a dream that my car went missing (as it would normally be parked/backed into my regular spot), but I kept clicking my lock button to see where it was. Instead, a blue hatchback was parked in my spot with the passenger side door being wide open. I heard Aaliyah’s “Back & Forth” playing in the background and it got to the part in the song where R. Kelly says “…be who you want to be.” Panicking, I was about to call my mom and then I woke up.

I interpreted it as a sign - the “blue” car with the door wide open represented the career I escaped from (ex. the police / “boys in blue”), me being lost/confused and ultimately finding myself / choosing to “walk away” from a dangerous / unfulfilling situation (which I ALWAYS said I DIDN’T want to my mom [a former cop] , but I was going to do it to make HER happy), and hearing the “be who YOU want to be” as my sign to start doing/thinking for MYself (not to sound self-centered, but I’m always doing for others, even if/when it’s at my expense).

In summary, I built up the courage to say “no” and am actively taking strides to become my own person and go for MY dreams (like becoming a psychologist and HR professional or CHRS-ER, “Certified Human Resources Specialist who specializes in Employee Relations."

So, we dive into the topic of dream interpretations! Denison has a history of studying what dreams mean, where they come from, and how they can impact our life. Details based in fact and psychological study are provided, showing their can be a connection to random or recurring dreams showing what you're dealing with in life. We also know there's the ability to control your dreams, called "lucid dreaming." We discuss what it takes to achieve that level of oneness with your dreams, and how it could be a gateway into another level of controlling your mind. Plus, why CONQUERING your fears can be accomplished your dreams.

And, it all starts off with a follow-up on our Black Friday fallout. Why supply chain shortages and software malfunctions led to John ordering not one, not two... but THREE of the same couches! And why it's continuing to make this season's Holiday shopping one of the biggest shopping challenges yet.

There's a lot to break down here. Let's go ahead and get into it!

Ep. 150: Black Friday Strikes Back, and Return to Anarchy29 Nov 202101:24:51

This week, Black Friday is back with a vengeance… but not in the way most shoppers would want. The fears of supply chain interruptions and chip shortages have come to pass, and it’s impacting our holiday shopping in a big way with huge delays and lack of availability on popular items.

We share our firsthand experience, with things like laptops and even couches not expected to show up for months. How long can we expect these shortages and delays to let? And even if they were fixed today, how long would it take for the supply chain to be caught up? And, if you still haven’t completed your holiday shopping… what’s your best bet? We discuss it all!

Plus, we as a country waited months (or longer) for society to open back up so we could get back to our normal lives. Yet more and more, we see violence, arguments, disturbing attacks, and much more at public venues meant for fun and relaxation. What’s the reason for the Return to Anarchy taking over the Return to Normal? And how are we managing to enjoy our favorite places while ensuring we’re safe?

Then, how timely and impactful events the week of Thanksgiving made us even more thankful for what we already have.

Ep.149: Build-An-Apple Workshop, and Thankful for 2021’s Storms22 Nov 202101:06:36

This week, we’re discussing Apple’s new self-service program that allows you to give new life to your aging iPhone! It’s a major breakthrough in the world of smartphones, but it does come with some limitations.

First, you can only replace your screen, camera, and battery. And while for most people that’s likely enough, this only applies to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Why is Apple limiting the access to this program? What does this mean for the serviceability of other smartphones?

And, does this give Apple a higher baseline that will allow them to shoot for the stars with future iterations of the iPhone? With iPhone models that are proven to work, have high-quality components, and years of iOS updates available to them, could this allow the company to push the boundaries of future phones knowing they have something to fall back on? Will there be a greater effort to phase out old phones because of it? We discuss and debate it all!

Plus, it’s Thanksgiving week in America! It’s a time to reflect on what you’re thankful for. And while for many of us this year was just as hard as the last, we’re giving thanks for life’s storms and valleys, and how they’ve prepared us for success in the next steps of life. How you can find something to be thankful for, and how it can change your life (plus a whole lot more) on this week’s episode! Join the discussion!

Ep. 148: A Reunion 10 Years in the Making15 Nov 202100:44:37

Who says you can’t go home? For the first time, a high school reunion is being planned for the class of 2012 at John and Denison’s alma mater. As with many 10-year reunions, there’s a lot of planning and other variables. But what happens when you have over 1,200 former students to account for? And how many of those will actually show up?

There’s a lot of preconceived notions when it comes to high school reunions. People trying to look as good/wealthy/successful as possible to show off for old classmates. But for those who are truthful and humble with what they share, is there growth to be gained from this? We get into how reuniting with old connections can provide a welcome benchmark of growth that inspires continued progress in the future!

In this day and age, technology has had a profound effect on the way we communicate. And with multiple ways to reach people, and stay closely in touch with those we want to most, is a high school reunion truly necessary? And have we gotten complacent with how we keep in touch with others? Social media gives us the ability to keep up with those from past lives, even passively and from afar. What’s the impact of that? We discuss!

Is a high school reunion worth it, what should we expect heading into the event, and how can we use the reunion to build upon a decade of growth? It’s all up for discussion. LETS GET INTO IT!

Ep.147: Ford's Electric Throwback Concept - Is the future our past?08 Nov 202100:33:42

This week, we're talking about the impact of Ford's new concept pickup, the F100. If it looks familiar, that's no coincidence. The truck harkens back to an era over 40 years old, and provides a look back at the past, while also giving a window to the future. While only a concept, we want to know if the truck will change the way electric cars are designed.

With a propulsion system much different than that of gas-powered engines, car designers need not adhere to strict aerodynamic standards, potentially kicking open a door of retro-influenced car design. Will others jump on the trend? Or is this  a fleeting attempt to excite an audience over the possibilities of bringing back days gone by, and winning over those not onboard with the tech of the future? The details on this inspiring concept, our thoughts on the move, and much more on this week's episode.

Ep.146: Facebook Gets Meta, and Face-Scanning Passports01 Nov 202100:57:28

This week, we break down the REAL reason Facebook is changing its name to Meta. It's more than just a timely rebrand after a series of scandals. In fact, Meta stands to represent the Metaverse - a hybrid world of online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. What does that mean? It means a push to augmented reality, a blending of the virtual and real. And a greater push to creating a virtual reality altogether. But after recent scandals, is Facebook to be trusted with an even more invasive technology? And is it enough to cover up the sins from the past? We discuss.

Plus, Delta Airlines partners with the TSA to unveil new facial recognition software in the effort of making your travel experience a smoother one. But, is this an unwelcome invasion of privacy? And if so, have we become complacent as a society on the invasion of our personal information? This is a sign of things to come on a wider scale under the guise of "security" and "smooth travels", but what does it really mean?

And, it's spooky season! We share our Halloween party plans, and much more!

Ep.145 - Broadcasting Icon Allen Bestwick: "Just Have Fun With It"25 Oct 202101:08:17

This week we got the chance to speak with race broadcasting legend Allen Bestwick, the man behind the mic for over decades in NASCAR, Indycar, SRX, and so much more. It's not often the broadcaster gets to share their personal story, but this week we get to learn about Allen's upbringing, what got him interested in sports and broadcasting, and how he got his start in the industry. Plus, why his keys to success are as simple as hard work, being in the right place at the right time, and creating genuine connections.

From MRN, to NBC, to ESPN, we get to hear the inside stories as Allen's career grew and progressed. How years of hard work led to an unsuspected opportunity to join NBC for half of NASCAR's season, why he and racing/broadcasting legend Benny Parsons "had to" become great friends, and how a kind gesture from Tony Stewart years ago impacts their partnership on SRX.

We also discuss the direction of NASCAR, with new tracks continuing to be added, and a new car on the horizon. Allen says the schedules changes are an effort for the sport to break over a decade of complacency, and the new car will offer smaller teams more opportunity to grow. How money and declining viewership are playing a factor in both.

An incredible opportunity and interview. Join the discussion!

Ep. 144: California’s Gas Ban, and Facebook’s Forever Fallout18 Oct 202100:40:12

This week, we’re diving into California’s ban of gas-powered lawn equipment by 2024. That forces over 50,000 companies to  begin making those purchases after that deadline. The State has a plan to help, and one can argue this move is for the greater good (see: the environment/climate change). But is this evidence of major government overreach into the free market? Or is this a worthwhile transition and a major step in protecting the planet? We touch on both sides!

Plus, we've all moved on from Facebook’s major outage just a few weeks ago. But the company, and the government, has not. The outage came at an interesting time, during investigations into the security of its platforms, and whistleblower complaints against the company’s integrity. So, how does this outage continue to impact Facebook’s reputation? And how will it continue to do so for years to come? We talk about it all, and much more.

Plus, Denison’s flashy trip to Maui, and John’s tour of the Wichita music scene including attending a concert for vaccinated people only!

Has Hollywood met its match? This week, we're talking about Squid Games, the new viral show tearing up the charts, and set to become the most successful show in Netflix history! Ep. 142: Rivian Gets Rugged, and TikTok's Hold on Music 04 Oct 202101:15:09

This week, we take a look at Tesla-competitor Rivian, and the company's unconventional efforts to take the top spot as an EV automaker. First, Rivian's new R1T makes a direct appeal to the adventure-seekers in the world, even showcasing its rugged nature through a trip from South America to California - all captured on an Apple TV special. But taking an Electric Vehicle off the beaten path comes with its own challenges and hurdles. How is the company keeping people charged up before they head out on their offroad journeys?

Plus, Rivian invites tech journalists, but bans auto journalists from getting a first look at the new pickup. There is a lot to enjoy when it comes to built-in tech features, so it is perhaps understandable that the company would want to show those off first. But does that contradict the core audience the R1T is going for? And does it show a possible effort by Rivian to cover up for inadequacies in the truck's design? We discuss.

Plus, TikTok trending songs are ruling the charts. And while that is a cool showcase of the power the platform has on pop culture... the songs all sound pretty similar. And many are built around a hook-line that can be repeated to infinity for the sake of a video. Furthermore, the shift in the industry is changing the way artists and producers compose songs. What does this mean for the future of pop music? Is this the beginning of the end for complex music? Or is it just another phase no different than the the romanticized era of music from our past?

Ep.141: Distrust of the media, doctors, and healthcare experts (WE DIDN'T PLAN TO UPLOAD THIS)27 Sep 202100:45:39

This week, a special episode based on a question we received during a livestream! John was asked what it's like to face the criticism he and other members of the media receive on a consistent basis. Part of his response includes what it's like to battle vaccine deniers, among the most dividing of topics in our country today.

Discussion includes why people who refuse to get the vaccine are willing to take medicine not directly approved for COVID, how it became acceptable to claim to know more than experts on their own jobs, and why people believe their opinions should be regarded as fact.

Plus, the role social media plays in vaccine confusion, mask debate, and the disillusionment with COVID. How a variety of platforms are giving voices to a loud minority, and give an opportunity for those simply wanting to be wanted.

It's an impromptu Catchup. Join the discussion!

Ep.140: Nicki's Cousin's Friend, Worst Greatest Songs List Ever, and New iPhone/Old Tricks20 Sep 202101:35:10

So much for us to talk about this week, so let's jump right into it!

First, a controversial argument against the vaccine, courtesy Nicki Minaj. The rapper shares an inside scoop about her cousin's friend's swollen... plums, after getting the vaccine. But, an investigation in the country of Trinidad revealed there was no such case. What's the reason, then, for the wild claim? And is this a cover up for another controversial situation in her personal life?

Next, Rolling Stone releases an updated 500 Best Songs of All Time list... but is it accurate? Debatable placements in the top 10 and beyond have people reacting on social media. But is this list a true report by an established organization in music journalism? Or is it intended to gaslight and get you talking?

Then, a couple of reveals. First, a new look at Gran Turismo 7. Will the most realistic driving simulator finally follow through on promises made for over a decade? What do we expect out of some of the intended new features? And, will it live up to the hype? Next, Apple releases an all-new iPhone.... or is it? As with every new update, the iPhone 13 boasts some new features. But are they worth the upgrade? We discuss.

Plus, another gaslighting social media moment, this time at the Met Gala. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez arrives in a flattering gown... with the words "Tax the Rich" on it. Is this unwitting hypocrisy at one of the most prestigious fashion events on the planet? Or a designed ploy to stay in the spotlight?

A lot for us to talk about! Let's go ahead and get into it!

Ep.139: iOS 15 Privacy Concerns, Microsoft Office Closed, and Take it to the Telly13 Sep 202100:49:00

This week, is Apple being hypocritical about the company’s commitment to keeping your information private? New security measures planned for the next iOS are garnering heated reactions, even forcing Apple to delay their launch. One uses an onboard AI to block potentially harmful images (I.e., nudes) from being sent to children and teens. Another scans your photos - shared on iCloud - to monitor for illegal content, such as child pornography. Is this overreach by Apple, and a glimpse of them monitoring your private life? Or has the company developed a method to monitor for criminal activity (like their competitors) with as much of a hands-off approach as possible? We discuss.

Then, Microsoft Offices (pun intended) remain closed! With the COVID Delta Variant on the rise, the company is choosing to keep many employees remote. This goes counter to their tech giant competitors, Apple and Google, who are threatening employees who refuse to return to the office with things like pay cuts. What benefit does each decision have for each company? How will the Biden Administration’s new vaccine plan impact each company’s decision in remote vs in-office? And is this move by Microsoft a slight flex of their remote work functions? It’s all open for discussion!

Plus, an EXCLUSIVE sneak peak of Dev Omar’s upcoming single “Telly”, featuring John on production and vocals! Pre-save the tune on Spotify HERE! The track drops Friday, September 17th, and we’re very excited to share it with you all.

Ep.138: Certified Loquacious Boys06 Sep 202101:11:52

Anytime Drake drops a new album, it gets the whole world talking. And we at The Catchup, are no exception. This week, we break down Certified Lover Boy, and what makes it unique compared to its counterparts. One example is Drake's honesty in sharing what some would call a "toxically masculine" approach to his love life. We discuss why what some consider negative lyrics are actually a positive take and a deep way to connect with the listeners through storytelling.

Plus, what's up with all the Drake hate? We as a society have a hard time appreciating anything good without tearing it down. And for far too long, social media has given a voice to keyboard warriors that likely don't deserve it. This discussion is based on people gaslighting Drake on his own album release livestream. How this provides an insight into our society's hater culture, how it is stripping away society's ability for any new "heroes", and much more on this week's episode.

Also, Denison shares his trip to San Francisco, the sights and sounds of it all, how he nearly forgot he was even going in the first place, and why California tourists borderline have to take out a loan to visit the state.

Ep.137: In-Person Catchup - Apple App Store Lawsuit, Milk Crate Challenge, and Ida makes landfall 30 Aug 202101:12:24

This week is an IN-PERSON CATCHUP! We share the highlights of getting to hang together in the Air Capitol of the World - Wichita. But, a strange pattern continues with Denison's arrival... colder weather and stormy skies. However, no matter the severity of the situation, it doesn't compare to what's going on in Louisiana. We offer our thoughts on Hurricane Ida, and compare it to other major storms that left a lasting impact. Will we see fallout like high gas prices from this storm? We discuss.

Then, Apple loses an antitrust lawsuit that gives a greater percentage of income to small-business app developers. But the dip from Apple's 30% cut to its 15% cut is still substantial, and the line that separates small businesses from the large businesses (Apple still takes a 30% cut) is blurry. What does this mean for those businesses, the prices you'll pay for in-app purchases, and how does this impact other antitrust lawsuits against Apple that could give developers (and you) more freedom? We jump into it.

Plus, the milk crate challenge unfortunately takes a sad, deadly turn. Where do these viral trends come from? How do they end up going too far? And - with the groups regularly taking part and the areas the videos largely come from -  is this challenge a window into the racial inequality in the United States? It may seem like a stretch, but we explain it all and debate the idea in this episode.

Ep.136: Family-Friendly OnlyFans, and Where Are All The Cheap Cars?23 Aug 202101:11:11

This week, we discuss controversial content site OnlyFans, and the company's attempt to appeal to more investors... by doing away with the thing that made it so infamous to begin with. The company is creating a more family-friendly version of OnlyFans, and banning pornography on the main site. It joins an exclusive group of social media/content platforms to promote safe content, but are the intentions pure? Or is money once again speaking louder than words? We discuss.

Then, where are all the cheap cars? We all had that dream car when we were growing up where we thought "if I could just get a full-time job, I would buy that car." But investors, social media hype, and pop culture have sent many childhood dream rides out of site. And there's not many new options to replace them with for the next generation. We dive into the reasons for the spike in prices and notoriety for these simple dream cars. Will we ever see affordable sports cars return? What cool, affordable whips are available now? We talk about it all, and so much more!

Plus, an exclusive sneak peak of Dev Omar's new song, "Telly", featuring (and produced/mixed/mastered by) John. Check it out in the episode, and pre-save on your favorite platform HERE.

Ep.135: Buying vs Renting, and The New-Look Countach16 Aug 202100:58:38

This week, John and Denison reveal a new track featuring friend of the show, Devaughn Dorsett (Artist Name: Dev Omar). His new track "Telly", produced/mixed/master and even featuring John is due out September 17th. More details including a "behind the track" are due in the coming weeks. But in the meantime, you can follow Dev on Spotify to be among the first to know when the new track drops, HERE.

Then, a week after Denison shares his big, life-changing move, John shares his struggle in deciding what his next living situation should be. After several months having a tough time finding a home rental option that's even worthwhile, John is now debating making a sacrifice and moving into an apartment, or buying a home. Apartment positives include less care and maintenance required, support on any issues within reach, and some living costs are actually cheaper. But owning a home brings the autonomy, privacy, and security that so many desire. There's a whole more to debate, and we jump into it all with the goal of helping YOU make a similar decision in your life.

Then, it's Lamborghini's futuristic throwback. Everyone's favorite poster from the 80s - the Lamborghini Countach - is back, new, and improved. The supercar still boasts a V12, and now includes incredible hybrid technology. Still, the upgrades seem to be behind that of other super- and hypercar manufacturers. We talk about why this makes perfect sense for the automaker, how other manufacturers (and even racing series) are pushing toward a carbon neutral society, and what it could mean for the auto industry moving forward.

It's an all-new Catchup! Let's go ahead an jump into it!

Ep.134: Changing Seasons of Life, Shedding Skin, and Finding Light in The Darkness10 Aug 202101:46:33

This week, an authentic and transparent episode of The Catchup. First, Denison shares his big move into a new townhome, and cohabitation with his girlfriend. It's a big step for anyone in a serious relationship. So, we chat about why now was the time to make the move, the early challenges, and what he's learned from sharing a space with another.

Then, John shares his battle with melanoma. From a sudden change in a mole on his skin since birth, to a surgery that left a cut the length of a foot. Despite the rocky path to a clear diagnosis, John shares how he stayed positive through the process despite the added stress of his vehicle being vandalized. This one comes filled with some entertaining stories from the trip to the hospital. The conversation wraps up with why positivity, seemingly-outlandish internal confidence, and faith in a higher power are keys to weathering every storm in life.

It all tees off with John's late entry to Hollywood hit Tropic Thunder. Why movies like it should be cherished - not lambasted - for the role they play in society. It's an all-new Catchup! Join the discussion!

Ep.133 - The Players' Take: Blaming Men for Dating Culture, and China's Media Mindgames02 Aug 202101:56:59

This week, John and Denison are once again joined by Justin and Montrell from The Players' Take Podcast for an in-depth discussion on societal standards and China's influence on gaming, and the world.

First, are men to blame for the current culture of dating? It's a question of the chicken and the egg - which came first? What spawned our selfish and sex-promoting behavior? We discuss how men have a tendency of trying too hard when it comes to dating, and losing their self worth. That causes a vicious cycle of games, manipulation, disrespect, and selling each other short. Plus, in a world driven by social media, we talk about the influence of having too many options available at your fingertips. The easy ability to "swipe" to the next contestant has made everyone expendable, and turned dating into something similar to finding the "flavor of the day" at the grocery store. We discuss where these problems stemmed from, and what major steps can be taken to solve it.

Then, tech conglomerate Tencent continues to buy up major gaming companies. The cause for concern: they're partially led by members of the Chinese government. China has a history of threatening heavy censorship against parts of Western Culture. Their market also directly influences the decisions made by major corporations in the US. We discuss why these issues, combined with China's hostile cyberattacks against the US, could spell out major trouble for our country, our culture, and our freedoms. Plus, what it could mean for the tumultuous gaming industry!

There's a lot to discuss. Let's go ahead and get into it!

The Enigma of Faster-Than-Light Travel: A Cosmic Adventure05 Nov 202300:52:49

What if we could bend the rules of physics to our whim and zip across galaxies at the speed of thought? Buckle up for an adrenaline-fueled jaunt through the cosmos as we tackle the tantalizing puzzle of faster-than-light (FTL) travel! We kick things off with a deep dive into the realm of FTL, an intricate world that straddles the line between scientific possibility and the realm of dreams. Amidst the theoretical physics, we manage to find time for a lighthearted chat about our favorite sci-fi shows. Come join the fun and let us know your favorites!

Dare to journey deeper into the cosmos as we examine the groundbreaking work of physicist Miguel Alcubierre. His revolutionary theory of relativity might just hold the key to breaking the cosmic speed barrier. We then shift gears to the mystifying world of quantum mechanics, time travel, and a tantalizing teaser from a figure who claims to be from the future. Are his predictions about 2023 and beyond accurate, or is it all just an elaborate hoax? Stay tuned to find out!

In the final stretch, we take a hard look at the paradoxes that FTL travel presents. These aren't your everyday conundrums, but mind-bending enigmas that challenge our understanding of causality and the flow of time. To demonstrate, we examine a hypothetical scenario of a space station, an impending explosion, and a spaceship trying to outrun a disaster. We guarantee by the end of this cosmic ride, your perspective on space, time, and travel will be profoundly changed. So, sit back, strap in, and prepare for a voyage unlike any other!

Ep.132: EOlympics, Dream Sport for the Games, and the Billionaire Space Race27 Jul 202101:07:40

This week kicks off the start of Tokyo 2020, delayed last year due to the pandemic. This year's Olympics faces a few new events, including surfing and skateboarding. So it begs the question, what sports would YOU like to see added to the lineup for Paris 2024? We discuss our favorite options, including the possible addition of Esports. Denison makes a strong case for why it - and possibly chess - should both qualify. This as record-breaking heat and even a typhoon bear down on Japan, making for unique conditions at an already-unique Olympic Games.

Then, criticism is piling in after billionaires Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic) take their respective inaugural rides to the outskirts of space. Many people are wondering why they gained the ability to take the futuristic trips during a pandemic. Others are wondering why their money wasn't going toward something more immediately helpful to mankind. We react to the criticism, sharing our opinions on why we think it is so critical to boldly go where no one has gone before, and how these billionaires are already doing their part to give back.

Ep.131: Vote your Conscience, Life in Prison - The story of Hervis Rogers19 Jul 202100:55:44

This week on the Catchup, it's what some say is an attempt to intimidate voters, deter participation, and stoke fears of  voter fraud without actual proof. Hervis Rogers from Texas voted in the 2018 midterms, and 2020 Democratic Primary. Rogers spent time in jail for a burglary in the 90s, and was on parole from 2004 to June 2020. But under Texas law, parolees cannot cast a ballot. So, Rogers was arrested  and charged with two counts of illegal voting, a felony. He was held on $100k bail, and could face up to 40 years in prison (20 for each charge).

But Rogers claims he didn't know he was voting illegally, setting up an interesting legal battle considering state law requires the accused to "knowingly" be voting illegally to be found guilty. But there's an extra layer to this.  Despite voting in the Texas Democratic primary more than a year ago, Rogers was only charged this week as the Texas Legislature discusses bills that could limit voting access.

The Governor has also been critical of - without evidence - widespread voter fraud in the last election. Combine this with the fact that Rogers - who was profiled on national newscasts during the Primary after waiting in line for hours to cast his ballot  - and you critics saying Rogers’ arrest was motivated by politics, not election integrity.

There's a lot to break down, including why Rogers is NOT being charged in the county he voted in, so let's get into it. Join the discussion!

Ep.130 - Keeping Austin Weird, Sha'Carri Richardson Ban Fallout, and The Games Must Go On12 Jul 202101:03:58

Last week, John handled things on his own with a motivational solo episode. What does that mean for this week? Well, there's a lot of CATCHING UP to do!

This Week, Denison shares the details on his surprise trip to Austin, one of America's weirdest cities. The Hard Cider-lovers we are, Denison dives into his cider-tasting at the city's famous Austin Eastciders, one of the many highlights of the trip! It's a tale of two weeks, as John shares his battle against a strong stomach virus, a biopsy, and burnout, with bigger and brighter things for both on the horizon.

THE TOPICS:

FIRST, We discuss the state of the Olympic Games. Just days before the Opening Ceremony, there's still widespread concern over the safety of athletes and fans amid a pandemic. We discuss the safety precautions Japan is taking, including banning all tourists from attending the games - something sure to be a huge economic loss for a Country that's invested so much. We also compare this to the postponed Euro 2020, going on right now. What's working for that event, and why is there much less concern for it compared to The Olympics? We also discuss the bizarre things  being done by Games organizers to keep competitors safe, including (but not limited to) banning condoms.

NEXT, the banning of Dallas track star Sha'Carri Richardson from the Olympic Games. She had just claimed her title as the fastest woman in America, running the 100-meter dash in 10.64 seconds. The 21-year-old had the opportunity to stake her claim as fastest in the world on the global stage in Tokyo. But, she tested positive for marijuana just a month before the Opening Ceremony, causing the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to ban her from this year's competition. Richardson says she smoked after the death of her Mom as a way to cope. The action by officials has drawn strong reaction from both sides, and may soon influence the way the USADA polices marijuana use in the future (taking a page out of the book of UFC). But will it spark change on a global level? There's a lot to get into!

Ep.129: Let YOUR Freedom Ring06 Jul 202100:28:03

This week follows our country's biggest celebration, Independence Day. And while there is some debate over whether the USA truly provides freedom for all, there's one freedom that can't be taken away: Your own autonomy.

Definition of autonomy

1: the quality or state of being self-governing
especially : the right of self-government
The territory was granted autonomy.

2: self-directing freedom and especially moral independence
personal autonomy

In a busy world that's only growing busier, it's easy to be caught up in constantly serving others (and losing yourself in the process). So, how can you find your true independence without sacrificing those around you? And how do you reach a point where you don't allow others to influence your life choices, while also trusting in yourself to make the right moves? We discuss, and much more.

True autonomy also allows you to bring joy to those around you. Find your autonomy, acquire your independence - whether it's financial, emotional, etc - and grow your happiness in the process so you can share it with others. A lot to talk about on this one! Let's jump into it!

Ep.128: Independence Day, UFO Sightings Revealed, and Windows 11 Review28 Jun 202101:03:45

This week, we're just days away from our nation's biggest celebration, Independence Day! With society finally feeling nearly back to normal post-COVID, how are we celebrating? Will this year's festivities (that happen to fall on a weekend by the way) go out with a bang? Or nothing more than a mere fizzle? The excitement is palpable, and we want to know how YOU are enjoying this ongoing return to normalcy.

Then, The Pentagon releases its long-awaited report on UFO sightings... but there's still more questions than answers. The possibilities of aliens are... wait for it... still up in the air. But more than 140 sightings were not explained! What did we learn from this report? And what, if anything, is still out there? We discuss!

Plus, Windows major announcement of a new Windows software! We give an early take on the upgrade. Will it ride the wave of XP and 10? Or will it sit to the side of Vista? We discuss the exciting news for PC users, give our review on the product, and a whole lot more on this week's episode. JOIN THE DISCUSSION!

Ep.127: Getting Heated, On (Juneteenth) Holiday, and Snapchat Speedtrap21 Jun 202101:27:46

This week, the podcast gets heated... sort of. Both of us are enduring heat waves in our respective states, as is most of the country. While we'd both take the heat over the cold, there's new concerns about Texas's power grid holding up to the demand of such a heat wave... just a couple of months after it was proven to not be able to handle the cold. What's at risk if it all falls apart? What is the cause for the surge in demand, and why can't the supply keep up? And, what questionable tips are being given to stay cool and minimize your energy usage? We discuss, and give some tips of our own on this week's episode.

Plus, Juneteenth is finally a federal holiday! The day commemorates the official ending of slavery in the United States, and not 156 years too soon by the way. Why did it take so long to pay tribute to such a big moment in our nation's history? Especially with our government honoring so many other things through holidays like President's Day, or the admittedly-questionable Columbus Day? And why now? We discuss, and share our thoughts on whether this addition was politically-charged, and why the push for racial equality should transcend politics.

Then, Snapchat finally drops its popular "speed" filter! The feature would show the speed the user was traveling in real-time as the video was taken. The problem? One of the most common uses for this filter was while driving, leading to several deadly or violent crashes. Lawsuits followed, and Snapchat slowly made the feature more difficult to find... all while denying it had any role in those crashes. What we think about the subtle changes from a growing corporation, and much more. JOIN THE DISCUSSION!

Ep.126: Testing Critical Race Theory, Uncharted Waters, and a New Maverick in Town14 Jun 202101:56:08

This week, John and Denison sail into uncharted waters. National Geographic has changed the game, identifying a fifth Ocean! But don't sell your outdated globes just yet! The decision still awaits final approval and consensus from an international group. But Nat Geo says the announcement was based off different ocean currents and temperatures. That raises the question... with climate change continuing to progress, is this something that could continually change and potentially create "new" oceans?  We discuss.

During The Catchup, Denison shares his battle with another Microsoft outage, this time preventing employees from communicating with each other through the company's teams platform. John then shares details on an exciting upcoming gig. It's the first full-band show in years, the first with this current lineup, and nearly every song will see the light of day for the first time ever. You can learn more about the event HERE! Hope to see you there!

Then. Denison and John discuss a growing debate in America - the teaching of Critical Race Theory. The goal of this teaching is to look at events of America's history through the lens of their racial impact. For example, how the Civil War impacted race relations. Or, reverse that, with how race relations impacted the Civil War. The proposal comes with a lot of heated emotions on both sides. We discuss the positives of this kind of teaching, address the concerns, and look at how critical race theory could forever change America.

Plus, there's a new Maverick in town. But Ford is looking to change the game with not one, but two future-thinking pickups. The new Maverick is nothing like the original. This one is a light-duty pickup that comes standard with a hybrid engine, 40 mpg, and a good price tag. But it also comes with many car-like features, defeating the purpose of its supposed truck capabilities. Is it worth the purchase? Also, lightning strikes twice! Ford is bringing back the F150 Lightning with an all-new electric powerplant. Is this truck's steep price tag worth the benefit?

Ep.125: Fauci’s Controversial Emails, Held for Ransom(ware), and When NBA Fans Attack07 Jun 202100:59:11

This week is a special episode, with John hosting live from Wichita’s iconic Brickyard music venue. That means all your favorite catching up and discussion you’ve come to know and love, with the added character of a bustling live music scene.

First, we start with an update over the controversy of COVID’s origins. This after the emails of Dr. Fauci were leaked to the public. It reveals many wild details including the wide array of people Fauci was emailing - from lawmakers to celebrities. Plus, Fauci ponders if COVID-19 originated in a Chinese lab, and something many people are focusing in on… an email speaking out against the use of masks. Is Fauci a hypocrite with this advice? Or is his Spring 2020 email a product of the lack of knowledge on the virus at the time? We discuss.

Then, more ransomware hacks, more problems. More and more companies and government entities are becoming the targets of ransomware attacks. These hacks steal your information and hold them for ransom, and the latest are high stakes with a high price. In many cases, we actually know who’s behind the attacks… so what’s being done about it? And is it enough?

Plus, NBA fans attacking players. There have been many recent incidents resulting in heavy repercussions for the fans behind the acts. Is the uptick in violence and abusive language a result of cabin fever? Or something much more dire? This type of behavior is nothing new for sports fans, nor the NBA. So what can be done to stop it? We talk about it, and much more on this week’s episode! JOIN THE DISCUSSION!

Ep.124: Facebook vs The World31 May 202100:42:21

It's a return to form for the U.S., with Memorial Day marking the first holiday post-pandemic featuring fewer COVID cases, more vaccinations, and less restrictions. So, how are you enjoying this new-found freedom? We share our plans, and what this could mean for the rest of 2021.

Then, Apple is allowing people to opt out of sharing their information with any downloaded apps. This doesn't sit well with Facebook, who feeds off of that information to grow their business. The battle that's ensued is something that could shape the way your information is shared. We discuss, and much more on this week's episode!

Plus, another battle with Facebook. The company is now allowing posts implying a Chinese lab sparked the Coronavirus. This after a ban on those posts not long ago. The reason why? The prevailing theory is now shifting to the idea that a lab mistake may have caused the virus to spread. What this mean for the future of our relations with China, how we share information, and how scientists research dangerous viruses? We discuss, and much more on this week's episode.

Ep.123: Close Encounters with UFOs, Footprints in the Sand, and a Send-it Summertime24 May 202101:18:35

This week, we're counting the days until the return of Summer! With vaccinations full-steam ahead, health restrictions lowering, and nature doing its part, we couldn't be more excited. How we plan to handle a post-pandemic Summer and make the most of a time a year in the making.

Then, New details and leaks of Navy encounters with UFOs. This after a jaw-dropping interview on 60 minutes detailing the speed and ability many of these flying objects have. We discuss shocking new video released this week (WATCH IT HERE), and what the story could be behind these flying objects. Where are they coming from? What's their purpose? Is it ALIENS?! We discuss.

Plus, the latest shortage is sand... and it's only getting worse. Don't go to the beach? Doesn't matter. Sand is used in just about everything you could imagine. From glass, to cell phones, and a whole lot more. Sand mining is the largest industry in the world. So why aren't we talking about it? And what can be done to fix the shortage? That and a whole lot more.

This week, The Catchup kicks off with John sharing his experience inside Wichita's new Riverfront Stadium at the Wind Surge home opener! How long will the hype last? And will it be long enough to carry the team and the stadium? What will it take so that the Wind Surge don't suffer the same fate as the teams before it?

Then, cyber attacks damaging the brains of government officials are more widespread than previously thought. What's causing the attacks? Where are they coming from? And is this a sign of new modern warfare? One possible culprit is Russia, where hackers are known to have been behind the hack on a crucial oil pipeline. Ep.121 - Amanda Aguilar: Voice for the Voiceless10 May 202101:10:02

This week we sit down with news anchor/reporter/John's former work-wife Amanda Aguilar for one of our best discussions yet!

First, we all went through the tough year that was 2020. But Amanda’s path is different than most. She shares what caused her struggles of the toughest year on record, how she knew it was time to get help, and what she did about it. A lot of good insights here, including how she knew the help she was seeking was in fact working. It’s a self-love journey worth listening

Then, as an Asian-American journalist, Amanda shares her side of the recent Asian hate crimes, the impact reporting on those events has had, and how her new-found strength from her own journey prepared her for this new challenge. Also, how these tragedies allowed her to find her voice on social media, and use it as a voice for change.

Plus, how social media can be used as a tool for engagement and fun, instead of controversy. We discuss  the positive side of social media and how you can benefit from using it properly.

Ep.120: Musical Clickbait, Coming Up Short, and Renting Done Right03 May 202101:33:22

This week, we're talking a new hit rock single using a clickbait title to get people to hit play. It's far from the first to do so, but it's definitely among the least subtle. The meaning of Badflower's attention-grabbing new tune "F*ck the World", and why many groups are using this approach to sift through a world of oversaturated media.

Then, an update on the semiconductor shortage impacting that next upgrade you want to get. Why despite the impact affecting only a niche group, it's something you should continue to monitor as this shortage is expected to continue for the next several years. Conversation also includes another shortage... truck drivers. Why a lack of long-haulers could impact what you pay at the gas pump.

Plus, a step-by-step discussion on how to find the right place to live. We go through a 5-step plan to find your ideal next home, the pros and cons of renting vs buying, and what we are looking for in our next homes. There's a lot to get into!

Ep.119 - Devaughn Dorsett, Pt.2: Love Yourself, Then Others26 Apr 202100:59:41

It's part two of our long-touted discussion with close friend Devaughn Dorsett!

This week, we begin with a discussion on mental health. In a world becoming constantly more open to a discussion on mental health struggles, why is there a caveat when it comes to that discussion in relationships? We discuss the continued expectation for men to hide their emotions, and the impact that can have long-term on dating.

Plus, another common message in today's society... self-love. It's a great message of understanding your worth, before you can begin to truly understand the worth of others. But, has the message been lost in a sea of social media posts and self-promotion? We talk about why we think self-love has been lost in the wash, and what it can bring to the table when done properly.

Then, how do you know when you've found "the one"? In a world of over-saturated dating options, we discuss how you can know when you're choosing the right one, rather than settling for something convenient. There's a lot to dive into this week. JOIN THE DISCUSSION!

Ep.118 - Devaughn Dorsett: Going the Distance21 Apr 202101:11:27

After several years of patiently waiting, we finally have the third amigo on the show. Devaughn Dorsett joins the discussion for not one, but TWO separate interviews! First, we set the groundwork with how our friendship came to be, and why our simplicity continues to feed a healthy and loving friendship.

Many people may not be aware the Catchup's official website (and it's many sub-sites) are all of Devaughn's making. He shares what inspired him to build an online culture hub, and why he preferred to go into business with friends, rather than run away from it.

Then, we dive into how online dating has impacted real-life dates. More people are readily-available for a date than ever before. And now, not all of the distance seems so far away. What's the peak distance you would travel for a date? And when, as Denison says, does the law of diminishing returns come into play?

We talk about it, and much more on this week's episode! Join the discussion!

Ep.117: Space Jam Slam, Back at the Movies, and Social Media: Unplugged12 Apr 202101:24:24

There's a lot to break down on this week's episode!

First, we react to the explosive new trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy, and our feelings on the new film 25 years after the original. Is it a poor attempt to follow an iconic movie? Or a unique take with a new direction? We discuss that, and how the release of films like this could change the movie industry. With these movies being simultaneously released on streaming services, how will this impact movie theaters desperately looking to rebound post-pandemic? What's the potential financial impact on production houses and actors? And, is this a permanent change to the movie industry?

Next, imagining a world without social media. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are becoming increasingly more pervasive in our everyday lives. And we as society are becoming increasingly more reliant on them. We think back to a time without social media, and envision a theoretical world where the world is wiped clean of these services. How would our social interactions, independent artists and businesses have to adapt and adjust without them? Plus, is there a happy a middle ground? How to find balance with real life and social media to optimize your relationships.

Then, Facebook's scraping incident. It's not a hack, but your information was stolen. And Facebook has no intention of telling you about it. Here's the caveat... it could be your fault. What was stolen, why you could be to blame, and why it could definitely happen again. It's an all-new Catchup! Let's get into it!

Ep.116: Off the Teams, Clearing the Canal, and Relax Responsibly05 Apr 202101:02:04

This week, we’re talking about the importance of proper relaxation in a world of ever-increasing burnout. Why the pandemic has put a premium on unwinding/getting away. Plus, what to do when your normal reprieves are no longer enjoyable, and how we’ve found solace through all of the calamity of the past year.

Then, a major outage for one of the world’s most important companies, Microsoft. The mystery behind the outage that impacted nearly all Microsoft products, including Teams. With more people using the software than ever before, the outage comes at a bad time, leaving many remote workers and new businesses in a lurch.

And speaking of mysteries, we talk about the blockage of the Suez Canal! The investigation into how a Supertanker ran aground is ongoing, and the captain of the vessel is not cooperating. Plus, with hundreds of ships waiting on the blockage to be cleared, we discuss how this could directly impact you and the goods you buy from the store! It’s an all-new, packed episode of the Catchup! Ep.115: Burning Out vs Fading Away, A Half-vaxed Life, and Semiconductor Supershortage29 Mar 202101:16:11

This week, John and Denison once again catchup on a variety of topics, starting with John’s new shirt (exclusively available HERE) causing controversy in and around Wichita. John explains the story behind “Burn Century II” and the reason for the satirical attack on the iconic building. Plus, the aggressive reaction so far to the new shirt.

Then, Denison shares why the biggest adjustment of  his new job at UT Dallas is undoing bad habits. He shares his struggle with relinquishing control and trusting others to handle their assigned tasks, rather than trying to do everything on his own. How to grow yourself, and not get caught up in burnout, plus so much more. It’s a valuable discussion with a necessary lesson as you climb the corporate ladder.

Next, We’re half-vaxed! Both John and Denison share the experience of getting their first shot, including how Denison was nearly turned away, then monitored longer than most others! John’s experience was smooth, but he’s one of the few getting the shot in Kansas! And now, the state is starting to open up in a big way with just over one-quarter of the population vaccinated! We discuss the pros and cons of this move, the controversial reasoning behind it, and much more!

Finally, a superconductor shortage is impacting the future of all of your favorite devices. What does that mean? Production of a key component on many of your smart devices (and cars) is at an all-time high... but so is demand for the products they go in! It's a race to keep up, and it could impact the industry for years to come.

There's a lot to discuss! Let's jump into it!

Ep.114 - Breaking News with Aaron Wondra: In the Dark of the Night22 Mar 202101:19:46

This week, we welcome  our guest and long-time friend Aaron Wondra to The Catchup. Aaron and John spent many years working overnight producing a newscast together, and have a lot of stories to share... some of which gets weird.

We discuss the isolation that comes with working  odd hours, and what we learned from working the graveyard shift. There are plenty of positives and negatives that come with working with the vampires, and there are several things that made us better people in life. Add in the rush that comes with working in broadcast news, and there’s several life lessons learned, camaraderie gained, and crazy stories to share.

Then, we dive into  the recent hate crimes against Asians, and death of a young black Texas man while in police custody (the latter of which happened in John and Denison’s hometown), all from the perspective of journalists. Discussion includes in-depth analysis on the handling of these stories by the national media, how COVID may have played a role in these crimes, and much more.

Ep.113: Texas Unmasked, COVID guilt, and DIY Outlaw15 Mar 202101:11:01

This week, we're kicking it off with a personalized look at Texas post-COVID restrictions. Denison shares his experience in the public life since the lifting of those rules, and we share what we hope comes out of a society gradually inching toward being fully vaccinated.

Then, in very personal admission, John shares his battle with the Coronavirus and putting those around him at risk (both intentionally and unintentionally). We talk about the implications of putting those around you at risk, and provide proof of how long-pushed precautions can truly help stop the spread.

Plus, DIY work on cars is outlawed in Sacramento, all for the sake of being eco-friendly. What does this mean for local auto shops, DIYers, and how can these rules positively impact the environment? Is it worth the gain, or is this an example of government overreach? There's a lot to talk about!

Ripples of Misconduct: The Undermining of Scientific Trust 04 Nov 202300:26:29

What if the very foundations of scientific institutions were shaky? Join us as we flip the lid on the disconcerting rise in scientific misconduct, a phenomenon that's not just limited to the quantum level but is a stark reality in our daily news. This episode explores the deterioration of trust in esteemed places like Stanford and Harvard, referencing the film Oppenheimer to highlight the gravity of the issue. In the quest for truth, we further expose the threefold increase in retractions, from 40 in 2000 to a staggering 5222 today, a statistic that screams for attention.

Regrettably, scientific fraud isn't a harmless crime contained within the walls of research labs. Its repercussions echo far and wide, as seen with the disastrous fallout of Joachim Boldt's misleading results, a case that led to fatal consequences. Unravel the complex web of scientific misinformation with us, as we dissect the damaging impact of such misconduct on research integrity and our trust in scientific institutions. As we wrap up this episode, we express our heartfelt gratitude to you, our listeners, for accompanying us on this enlightening journey into the belly of the science world. Buckle up, for trust is a fragile thing, and we're here to test its limits.

Ep.112: Texas without Restrictions, Out of Power/Out of Money, and Destination: Space Hotel08 Mar 202100:55:34

There's a lot to Catchup on this week! First, Texas drops all COVID restrictions and limitations. How do you feel about the move? What is the impact on those who have yet to get vaccinated or catch the virus? And how will this impact businesses that still choose to enforce their own restrictions?

Next, many people report having to give up pay or vacation time after February's winter blast cut power across the South - honing in on Texas. Many businesses lost income during those outages, and couldn't provide their employees a place to work. But, should those employees have to suffer the consequences for something out of their control? Is there a better solution? We discuss.

Then, is it your next destination vacation? A company is racing to develop a space hotel that's ready for liftoff in the next six years! It's taking "getting away" to all new heights. While it may be far from affordable... is it something worth considering? Do the positives outweigh the risks? We discuss all of it, and so much more, on this week's episode.

Ep.111: Dancing in the Streets, Stonk Bro Surge, and Is 'Cancel Culture' Canceled?01 Mar 202100:49:25

THIS WEEK, the discussion starts with a preview of John venturing into the great unknown - a turn-up at a club in 2021. We discuss the impact of the lowering positivity rate, and our concerns and hopes as society begins to open up more and more.

NEXT, Denison admits he's a Stonk Bro! How the now-viral influences of Reddit, Robinhood, GameStop, and more influenced him getting into the game of short-term investments. Discussion includes tips on how to safely play the stock market for short-term gain, why biding your time bring financial gain, and much more.

THEN, despite recent events like Mr. Potatohead being stripped of his title, we're wondering if cancel culture is dying out. Recent events like the NASCAR reinstatement of driver Kyle Larson have us wondering if society's obsession with the lifestyle is being toned-down. What's changed since incidents such as Kevin Hart being canceled from the Oscars, and why there actually may be some good that comes from cancel culture.

Ep.110: The Season of Love, pt. deux22 Feb 202101:30:23

NOTE: AUDIO ISSUES PLAGUED THIS EPISODE

This week, it's a continuation of recent discussion on what we've learned about ourselves (and others) from our relationships, how we've grown, and what tough lessons forced us to be better along the way.

After focusing on Denison's dating career last week, this week we turn the focus to John and take a look at the many ups and downs, and why he says he wouldn't trade any of it for anything different.

Dating can bring you to the mountaintop, and can leave you alone and struggling in the valley. But no matter where you are, there's something to be gained that - if you allow it - will shape your future for the better.

Plus, what defines our "dream girl", and why we won't settle for anything less.
