| Episode 1 - What actually is Caring Leadership? | 28 Sep 2026 | 00:22:25 | |
What actually is caring leadership, and what does it look like when you’re trying to lead people in the middle of a busy working day? In this first episode of The Caring Leadership Podcast, I share a little about why I started the podcast and my own experience of becoming an accidental leader in healthcare. Then we get into the evidence. Drawing on Professor Michael West and The King’s Fund’s work on compassionate leadership, we explore four practical behaviours: attending, understanding, empathising and helping. We look at what it means to really pay attention, why our first interpretation of a situation isn’t always the whole story, how empathy can coexist with boundaries, and why caring leadership still includes clarity, accountability and difficult conversations. And, importantly, caring leadership includes caring for ourselves too. The aim is to take some of the guesswork out of leadership and leave you with four simple questions you can take back into your own work.
