A new project: Character23 Jan 202600:00:57

New York City is full of characters: unapologetically authentic people who create the vibe that make this city great. People who have thrown out the rulebook and become the artist of their life.

We dive into the messy, unpredictable journey towards fulfillment and authentic self-expression. We talk to creatives and artists, entrepreneurs and change-makers about where they came from, who they’ve become, and what it took to get here. These are honest, intimate conversations, where we explore taking risks, trusting your intuition, career twists, creative awakenings, and the role this intense and powerful city played in shaping their path. We explore the structures and tools they used to support them - from psychedelics to therapy, spirituality to community.

We get real. We have fun. We go deep. Always in the quest to leave you wiser and more inspired. This show is about the character it takes to build an authentic and fulfilling life that feels uniquely your own.

The Career Studio: Mitigating my own burnout03 Oct 202300:22:47

I felt stuck in my business recently. Confused, tired, and overwhelmed. Everything felt hard and annoying and all the things I usually found energy in were draining me. But then it dawned on me. Wait, I literally have a system for fixing this. It's what I talk about every single day to my clients and audience. Why don't you use your own medicine, Anne? So I used my own program to diagnose and address my issues. I mitigated my own ennui and burnout and within six weeks was back on track - feeling energized and having readjusted the way I was working to better suit who I am and my current priorities. Because who we are and what we want constantly evolves. The business I created two years ago is not the business I want and need now. I needed to adjust. And I used my proven system to do it efficiently.

In this episode I dive into exactly what questions I asked myself and the adjustments I made to turn confusion, exhaustion, and frustration into clarity, energy, and momentum.

The Career Studio: Strive for B- work05 Sep 202300:22:17

When we strive for an A in everything, when we want everything to be perfect, we are either unable to keep up with life’s competing demands or we burn out. So what if I told you the secret is striving for B- work? If you’re a chronic over-achiever that is going to feel deeply uncomfortable. And that’s exactly why you’ll want to listen to this episode.

I discuss:

  • The economic principle behind my recommendation to focus on B- output
  • Why an A works in school but not in real life
  • The negative results created from constantly striving for As in everything
  • Personal lessons from my own experience unwinding from over-achieving

The Career Studio: The 4 skills for career fulfillment 25 Jul 202300:29:32

When our career stops working the way it once did it can be overwhelming. The confusion and ambiguity is uncomfortable. What do we pay attention to and what do we ignore? That’s why I started my business, to help people move through these moments of evolution with intention and structure. And the good news is, when you boil down the noise there are actually four fundamental things to focus on to build an energizing career you love. And if you focus on these four themes it’s like a playbook you can come back to time and time again as inevitably, who you are and what you want evolves.

In this episode I discuss:

  • How to own who you are and use that as a compass for your career
  • How to have conversations in a strategic and structured way to guide you and open doors
  • How to manage your mindset intentionally to create the emotions and actions that will facilitate the results you want in your life
  • How to set, hold and communicate the boundaries you need to thrive.

The Career Studio: Lessons from getting fired11 Jul 202300:19:37

I consider getting fired one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. And even though it’s certainly inconvenient and uncomfortable, I consider it a blessing in disguise for most people. In this episode I share my own story of getting fired plus those of people I know and have worked with to help you see why in most cases, it’s an opportunity to re-design your career in a way that better suits who you are and what matters to you. The people and environments that aren’t right for you will reject you in some way, getting fired is an example of that.

In this episode I discuss:

  • The beliefs that got me into a role that wasn’t right
  • What I had to come to terms with when I actually got fired
  • The relationship between alignment and getting fired
  • Examples from clients and friends who’ve also been fired
  • The narratives to focus on instead to create more acceptance and confidence from getting fired

The Career Studio: Trusting yourself with Sarah Sternberg13 Jun 202300:45:59

After nine months of maternity Sarah was looking towards returning to work with trepidation. There had been some significant changes while she was out and she had had a history of parachuting out of jobs quickly when things weren’t exactly perfect. She was worried she’d do that again and potentially end up in the wrong place. She wanted to be thoughtful and considerate about the next phase of her career but she wasn’t sure exactly how. Today she trusts herself to navigate bumps and transitions because she knows what she wants. She’s clear on where she’s going professionally and has shaped her current environment to support her growth in this direction. She’s unwound from people pleasing, is no longer tying her sense of peace and happiness to goals in the future, and is connected to her emotional world to help her make smart, aligned decisions.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How Sarah restructured her career to suit her strengths, interests, and priorities
  • How she leveraged her network to create opportunities and ongoing support
  • Detaching her happiness from finding a new role and learning to create it now in the midst of her own evolution
  • Unwinding from people-pleasing and how this can get you off track during the interview process
  • The importance of connecting to your emotional world as part of your work life to help you make good decisions

The Career Studio: Follow the fun30 May 202300:20:30

Too often we have a narrative that work should feel like work. That fun is something that happens outside of our job. But operating from this belief creates a reality where work is indeed not fun. What you think you create. The simplest way to describe the process of creating an energizing career you love is to follow the fun.

In this episode I discuss:

  • How I define fun - it’s not at odds with impact or salary
  • How to figure out WHAT feels fun
  • How the current career landscape allows for so much more fun that ever before
  • The difference between jobs that feel fun and jobs that we tell ourselves are ‘right’
  • When to make a strategic move in your career

The Career Studio: How to achieve any goal16 May 202300:31:39

Oftentimes the reason we aren’t taking action is because we’re worried about what could go wrong and how we will feel when it does. But if we accept that life is a 50/50 split of comfortable and uncomfortable emotions - no matter if we stay where we are or go for the goal - then it starts to shift the way we perceive doing new things. In order to achieve any goal we have to welcome the uncomfortable feelings that come with doing something new. And if you want to learn how to do this then have a listen.

In this episode I discuss:

  • How to see failure in a way that supports you to take action instead of scaring you into inaction.
  • My own experience launching a podcast and building a business and what it’s taught me about mistakes and commitment.
  • What we have to accept about creating new things.
  • An exercise to help you evaluate the career ideas you have and what will be required to go after them.

The Career Studio: Letting go of your parents' opinions02 May 202300:25:03

Oftentimes the reason we’re stuck in our careers is because we’ve been building it against someone else’s model for success and fulfillment - and this model often comes, inadvertently, from the spaces where we were raised. If your parents have a lot of opinions, or if you find yourself anxious about pleasing your parents, you won’t want to miss this episode. As letting go of what they think you should do is essential to creating a career and life on your terms.

In this episode I cover.

  • The model I was raised in and how this influenced my opinions about what I did early on in my career.
  • The reactions that my parents had to my decision to become a coach
  • The reactions my clients’ parents have had to their own career reinventions
  • What to remember and focus on if your parents’ second-guess the professional or personal decisions you’re making.

The Career Studio: Finding the bullseye with Nick Wellner18 Apr 202300:31:56

When I met Nick he felt like he was treading water, clocking in and clocking out, looking up the corporate ladder without any real enthusiasm.

He felt like there was something missing.

After six months together Nick landed his dream job working in sports betting. He's stepped off the "career ski lift" and has created a career at the intersection of what he's naturally good at, what he's interested in, and his life priorities.

Nick and I discussed:

  • The value of constantly checking in on how you’re feeling
  • Being true to yourself about what you’re good at and what you like to do
  • How he created the perfect role for himself through networking
  • The importance of going for things that really align with your interests
  • What to focus on if you’re someone who avoids networking

The Career Studio: Careers are like romantic relationships04 Apr 202300:22:16

The process of building an energizing career you love is similar to the process of building a healthy, thriving, romantic relationship. This is good news. Because you have already had practice understanding yourself and building romantic relationships and so this experience can be applied to many of the core challenges you face professionally when you feel lost, demotivated or burned out.

In this episode I cover.

  • The five ways these two things in life are similar
  • How to take the wisdom you’ve developed through dating and building relationships and apply it to your career

The Career Studio: Panic MBAs21 Mar 202300:20:13

We hate the discomfort of feeling lost. And when we’re lost we don’t know where to start to fix it. This is why so many people reach for another degree - I did this, I did an MBA. Another degree feels like a socially-sanctioned way of addressing your lost feelings. But then why do so many people graduate no more wiser as to where they’re going and what they want? Why are there so many post-MBA students frustrated and lost in the 5 years after graduation? It’s because the MBA was selected in panic as the solution for feeling lost. I recommend avoiding this costly mistake.

In this episode I cover.

  • Why we tend to reach for secondary-degrees when we’re feeling professionally lost.
  • The impact of panic MBAs on what you’re able to get out of the educational program.
  • What to do instead when you feel lost professionally.
  • How to decide on a secondary degree in a productive, intentional way.

The Career Studio: You might be people pleasing07 Mar 202300:20:58

Most people pleasers don’t realize they’re people pleasers. Because people pleasing is more nuanced than telling people yes when you really mean no. In fact, it’s a way of operating that can actually get you quite far professionally - that is, until you burnout or reach a level of screaming discontentment because you realize the environment you’re in does not fit with the person that you are.

If you consider yourself a high-achiever and you’re also struggling with burnout or feeling lost professionally, let me offer that you might be people pleasing.

In this episode I cover.

  • The people pleasing qualities that make you successful
  • The flip side of the success people pleasing creates
  • The origins of your people pleasing
  • How people pleasing gets in the way of professional and personal alignment
  • How to begin to unwind from people pleasing tendencies

The Career Studio: Don't update your resume21 Feb 202300:22:32

The natural place to start when you feel like you might want a new job is to head over to a job board and start scanning opening roles or open up that old resume and start adding new information. But this is the wrong place to start if you’re feeling lost professionally. It’s likely to cause you to spin out into a black hole of despair as you send your applications out and wait to hear back.

There is a much more effective, informative, and energizing way to spend your time if you’re feeling lost professionally. Join me as I walk you through the approach I take all my clients through to go from confusion to clarity.

In this episode I cover:

  • Why updating your resume is the wrong place to start

The Career Studio: Goals that feel good with Jen Lewis07 Feb 202300:46:21

By February most New Year’s resolutions will have fallen by the wayside. But what if you could think about your year in a way that felt motivating, exciting, and aligned - and set you up so that you could not fail?

My friend Jen Lewis has been developing and implementing a goal setting tool for eight years that has transformed her life - from leaving her marriage, coming out as gay, starting her own business, and buying a home. Jen credits the big changes she’s made to her goal setting approach: goals that feel good. It all comes down to focusing on one word and then building off of that.

Every day I think about how to make it easier to build an energizing career you love. And a big part of that is learning to tune into yourself, trust yourself, and take actions towards building against that. Jen’s approach to goal setting facilitates that - it’s a simple way to get into alignment with what’s most important to you.

Jen is British and has lived in New York for eight years. She started her career in marketing and advertising and today is the COO of Lex - an app that helps you find LGBTQ+ friends & community - as well as an advisor to other businesses in the sexual, wellness, and dating spaces. On the side Jen is a painter, a writer, and an avid traveller who is always on the move.

Find her on Instagram @jenlewis27

Download her tool here.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How to create one word that is your anchor point for the year.
  • How to set aligned goals
  • How to take incremental actions against those goals
  • Expanding what you see as possible through conversation
  • How to unblock limiting beliefs
  • What to do when you fall off the wagon with your goals

The Career Studio: Navigating uncertainty24 Jan 202300:15:18

Uncertainty is uncomfortable. And yet it’s a normal part of the transition process as you remake your career identity. You have to spend time not knowing what the next step is, before you’re clear on where you want to go.

But uncertainty feels untethering. Our culture values clarity and certainty - having a plan and executing against it. And so the tendency is to try to get out of uncertainty as quickly as possible. Relieving the uncertainty becomes more important than really figuring out what is the best next step. Which is a recipe for professional and personal misalignment.

In this episode I shine a light on uncertainty and reposition it in a way that feels normal and actionable so you can welcome it into your life and make intentional decisions that get you on the best path forward for you.

In this episode I discuss:

  • What happens when we make decisions to get out of uncertainty
  • Reframing uncertainty in a way that supports the transition work you’ll need to do
  • The most important thing to do to move through uncertainty
  • How to explore your uncertainty in the most productive way

The Career Studio: Learning to trust your gut with Yui Hashimoto10 Jan 202300:54:22

Do you ever feel attached to your career looking a certain way? This is what was happening with my next podcast guest, Yui Hashimoto, when we first started working together.

She was a postdoc at the Dartmouth College Society of Fellows; and after having spent the first decade of her career in academia getting a PhD, the only model of ‘success’ she knew was continuing on the path to becoming a professor. The fear of stepping off this path when she’d ‘already invested so much’ was significant.

But as her postdoc was nearing to a close she felt depleted, stressed, and uncertain - academia wasn’t feeling great but she had no idea what life would look like outside of the career she had planned on for so long.

Yui ended up leaving academia and feels lighter, clearer and more energized as a program evaluator at Public Health Seattle & King County.

As a ‘recovering academic’ she continues to keep her toe in the academic world, mentoring students, writing, and thinking with her collaborators. She's also written some great reflections on her career transition out of academia which you can find on Medium

When she's not working, Yui is playing with her niblings (the children of her siblings), running, practicing yoga, catching up with friends, or looking for the next restaurant or café to try.

Yui and I had a rich conversation where we discuss:

  • Shedding the shoulds that ruled her life and taking the leap into the unknown
  • The power of showing up and being yourself, how it impacts your relationship to work and your stress levels
  • The importance of talking to people outside your industry to get fresh perspectives on how to approach your career
  • How reimagining your career effectively requires you to look at your life holistically.
  • What happens when we ignore our feelings and only rely on our brain.
  • The impact of listening to our body's signals on our productivity and energy levels.
  • Where to start if you want to learn to trust your gut
  • The importance of taking your time to make career moves
  • How to take control of your time if you feel like there's never enough
  • The surprising benefits of putting yourself first
  • And much more

The Career Studio: How to reflect and set achievable goals27 Dec 202200:26:50

I consider the week between Christmas and New Year’s to be the best week of the year. The festivities are over, the socializing has calmed down, work is typically slower and we have these precious few days to be a bit quieter and reflect - on the past twelve months and the next twelve months.

A coach doing a podcast about reflection and goal setting is pretty obvious but I’m doing it anyway. This episode is meant to be used as a structure to support you in taking advantage of this time of year in a simple and intentional way.

In this episode I cover:

  • How to manage your mindset for growth and goal setting
  • What questions and setting I use to reflect and set intentions
  • How to set New Year’s Resolutions that actually stick
  • The Japanese principle of ‘kaizen’

The Career Studio: Finding purpose and direction with Damien Neva13 Dec 202200:26:03

Part of what I wanted to do on this podcast is introduce you to everyday people who are thriving professionally and personally. To show you that feeling energized and aligned at work isn't just for the celebrities or titans of industries that are often featured on other podcasts. It's available to every single one of us - including you.

In this episode I speak with Damien Neva, a former client of mine. Before we started working together Damien felt at sea - unsure how to define his professional focus and therefore unclear how to address the professional dissonance he was feeling in the midst of the pandemic.

Today, Damien introduces himself as a video artist (discover his awesome work here: http://damienneva.com/) who has been producing short form serial videos for more than a decade for modeling agencies in New York including his current shop of nine years, NEXT Management, where he is the global director of social media.

Although he never studied photography or filmmaking, his undergrad in English lit and a master’s in humanities and social thought have served him in good stead in the telling of stories.

Damien lives in Brooklyn with his architect wife and their two children.

You can also follow Damien’s work on Instagram or Twitter or LinkedIn.

We discussed:

  • The value of having lots and lots of conversations - even before you really know what you want to do.
  • How Damien turned his existing environment into exactly what he needed to progress his career
  • The importance of trusting your body and listening to its signals
  • How owning who you are and what excites you draws people to you
  • And much more!

The Career Studio: How to choose the 'right' path26 Mar 202400:21:30

It’s natural to want to choose the ‘right’ path for yourself professionally. And when people feel lost it feels hard to know what’s ‘right’. I see a lot of people get stuck here, often because their definition of right is leading them wrong. It’s focused on what will look good or what people around them know and accept. When you define ‘right’ with qualities that are grounded in external validation you’re disconnecting to yourself. And this is the fastest way to put yourself on a career path that feels draining. You will always go further faster if you let go of trying to fit in and own instead your unique makeup and priorities and use that as the metric for your professional success.

Are you ready to create an energizing career you love?

You can create a career that is simply an extension of who you are and how you want to live your life. If this sounds like what you’re after then let’s explore working together.

The Career Studio: How to stop procrastinating 15 Nov 202200:32:03

Learning how to manage my urges to procrastinate has been one of the biggest hurdles in creating an energizing career I love. And if I can do it - so can you.

Too often we see ourselves as fixed - as someone who just IS a procrastinator. As if it’s the lot we were dealt with in life and we have to learn to live with it. In reality, anyone can learn to be the person who does what they say they’ll do when they say they’ll do it. It does require learning how to be OK with experiencing uncomfortable things.

But when you learn how to be ok with being uncomfortable, there is nothing that you cannot do.

You’ll learn in this episode

  • Why we procrastinate and the often unrecognized impact it has on our lives
  • The step by step process I use to procrastinate less
  • How to make uncomfortable feelings less triggering

The Career Studio: Feelings: your overlooked superpower31 Oct 202200:25:36

In this episode I discuss why feelings are a superpower and how to tune into them and use them to your advantage.

Too often we try to resist, ignore, or fix our feelings, creating unwanted results in our life like procrastination, addiction, misalignment, and physical pain. When instead we learn to embrace our feelings - the good as well as the uncomfortable - we’re able to reset more quickly and avoid unwanted emotional reactions, we improve our connection to our gut - and thus our intuition, get more done, have more energy and so much more.

Take it from someone who spent most of her life ignoring and suppressing her feelings - when you learn how to genuinely feel them your world opens up and your life changes.

You’ll learn in this episode

  • What we create in our life when we ignore our feelings
  • How to properly experience a feeling so that it moves through and out of your body
  • What we create when we fully experience our feelings

Are you ready to create an energizing career you love?

You can create a career that is simply an extension of who you are and how you want to live your life. If this sounds like what you’re after then I want to invite you to schedule a consultation.

The Career Studio: Wisdom From My Career Path18 Oct 202200:35:26

I share my own journey to create an energizing career I love and the insights I’ve gleaned along the way that are fundamental to the work I teach at The Career Studio.

From starting out in beauty and sports to landing a job in advertising in London at 25 despite knowing no one in the industry and having a tiny network in London. I discuss how I loved the adland job - until I didn’t - and how I panicked when I felt lost and made a series of decisions from a place of panic that led me off track. I dive into my experience of hating my job and getting fired and realizing that coaching was the best fit for who I was and how I wanted to spend my time.

The past 15 years have had tons of ups and downs and these experiences have given me the wisdom I’m proud to share with you today. The intention is you walk away motivated, inspired, and equipped to apply my insights to your own career and life.

You’ll learn in this episode

  • How I landed a job at the biggest ad agency in London at 25 without knowing anyone
  • What to do and not to do when you feel lost in your career
  • How to make a decision if a second degree is worth it
  • How I found the thing I was really passionate about

The Career Studio: Your Time - Career Cornerstone 404 Oct 202200:31:01

Do you know how to structure your days and your weeks to support your energy and therefore productivity and impact? And are you able to set, communicate, and maintain the boundaries on your time that allow you to thrive? This isn't about being dogmatic and obsessive about time management with minute-by-minute plans, loads of apps, and a variety of to-do lists. This is about having OWNERSHIP over your time in a way that supports your energy and priorities. And it’s an essential component of creating an energizing career you love.

Of course, the problem is most of us don't do this. Letting work or other people's requests and needs, overtake our lives is so common and so accepted we often don't question, take a stand, and push back for what we need.

In this episode I walk you through the science behind prioritizing yourself, and a step-by-step process for identifying, communicating, and holding the habits and the boundaries you need to feel at your best.

For those interested, this article has details on the studies I cited in the episode: https://nautil.us/darwin-was-a-slacker-and-you-should-be-too-236532/

You’ll learn in this episode:

  • How much time you actually need to dedicate to work, rest, and sleep in order to achieve success and feel at your best.
  • Why we typically don’t hold our boundaries and how to move around this.
  • A step-by-step process for identifying, communicating, and holding the habits and the boundaries you need to feel at your best.

The Career Studio: Your People - Career Cornerstone 303 Oct 202200:21:08

People are the lifeblood of your career. And what I mean by people is essentially learning how to have intentional, insightful, strategic conversations about whatever you need help with.

This is the skill will help you move through the inevitable discomfort of confusion and uncertainty that comes along with transitions. Learning how to have conversations will open doors, it will introduce new ideas you hadn't thought of before, and it will uncouple you from a reliance on job postings (which have an incredibly low success rate - only 2% are ever read by human eyes) and learning to have conversations will uncouple you from recruiters (whose interests aren't always aligned with yours). Talking to people creates the energy and momentum you need to create a career you love on your terms.

In this episode we’ll discuss why people tend to shy away from having conversations and how to reframe networking, so it feels authentic and useful. We’ll discuss how to address the questions and concerns and fears you have about the half-baked ideas in your head. We dive into the importance of honesty and how it’s the critical ingredient in having effective conversations. And you’ll get a 4-step process that will help you generate a list of people to speak to right now and what to discuss with them.

You’ll learn in this episode:

  • What prevents you from having effective networking conversations
  • How to have conversations that feel authentic and useful
  • What to do immediately if you feel lost in your career
  • How to use honesty to build genuine relationships while networking

Are you ready to create an energizing career you love?

The Career Studio: Your Brand - Career Cornerstone 101 Oct 202200:25:13

At the heart of creating an energizing career is getting in touch with your own brand. And I mean brand in the most authentic sense of the word. Not who you think you should be or what other people ask you to be, but who are you at your core? This is all about authenticity.

The reason this is so essential is because it takes less energy to be yourself. If you design your career around, you this is when you can really thrive and create the most impact. The thing is you waste a lot of your energy getting yourself motivated to do something that bores you or produce work that doesn't play to your strengths. And instead, when you’re aligned, you're doing the things that come naturally to you and all your energy can go into creating the impact. (And you have more fun doing it and more energy when you're done).

Join me on the podcast to discover exactly what’s getting in your way of creating an energizing career you love and how to clarify your authentic brand and use that as the north star for your career, the map for career fulfilment.

You’ll learn in this episode:

  • The two most common hurdles that prevent people from creating an energizing career they love.
  • The three core components of your authentic brand and how to define them for yourself.
  • How to use your brand to generate career ideas.
  • How to manage the confusion and uncertainty around creating something new.

Are you ready to create an energizing career you love?

The Career Studio: Trailer: The Career Studio Podcast12 Sep 202200:01:00

Career fulfilment is possible for anyone, it's just a matter of knowing what to focus on. But there's a lot of noise out there - so when work stops working, where do you start? What do you pay attention to and what do you ignore? How do you navigate the transition points in your career and life with intention, focus, and grace?

Hi, my name is Anne Benveniste, and I started The Career Studio to make it easier to build an energizing, fulfilling career you love - one that is simply an extension of who you are and how you want to live your life.

The good news is there are four concepts that are the foundation of any energizing, fulfilling career. And if you know what they are and how to apply them it will allow you to get into alignment and stay there - no matter how you or your life evolve. On this podcast each episode I'll take you through an idea, tool, or concept from one of these four areas so you can strengthen your own foundation and build the career and life you crave.

The Career Studio: Don't say yes to the wrong job19 Mar 202400:21:47

Are you worried that you’ll say yes to the wrong job? This is a common concern when we feel lost and stuck professionally. This can happen for three main reasons:

  • You’re scattered - you don’t have a solid foundation based on the levers of career fulfillment to generate your hypotheses and assess opportunities.
  • You’re rushing - you’re so desperate to get out of your current environment that you grab at anything that’s different instead of what’s right.
  • You’re people pleasing - you get swept up in other people’s enthusiasm for you or their hard-sell on on opportunity and end up accepting a role that isn’t a good fit.

In this bonus episode I dive into these three areas in detail and discuss what to focus on instead to avoid these common pitfalls.

Are you ready to create an energizing career you love?

The Career Studio: How to feel confident05 Mar 202400:24:17

Confidence is something everyone wants more of. And the good news is - it’s a muscle you can strengthen. As with everything, it’s just about knowing what to focus on. Confidence comes from three places: the stories we tell ourselves about the struggles in our life, our belief in ourselves to navigate the unknown, and our willingness to feel any feeling. Ultimately this is about accepting your own imperfections and learning to be with uncomfortable emotions.

PLUS an exciting announcement - I’m launching a group program and releasing extra content this month to support it.

I dive into all the details in the episode.

The Career Studio: How to connect to your gut02 Jan 202400:22:45

Have you ever had a sense that you shouldn't do something ... and yet, you did it anyways. And then you kicked yourself afterwards when the result isn’t what you wanted because you felt like you had a sense that you shouldn’t do whatever is it that you did? We somehow know our gut is right and important and that connection to it can really help us… but how to hear it and trust it and know when it's right, this can feel elusive and mysterious.

I used to think it was this kind of binary thing, like either you were born hearing it or you weren't. But like most things, it’s a muscle and you can strengthen. Everyone has access to their gut. It's just that we live in a society that doesn't prioritize teaching us how to hear it and strengthen that connection. And so that's what this episode is about: teaching you how to strengthen your connection to your gut, to hear it, to pay attention to it so you can make decisions that are right for you faster.

The Career Studio: How to cultivate mentors05 Dec 202300:33:30

I spent years thinking mentorship had to be bestowed upon me. That if I worked hard enough and got lucky some benevolent titan of industry would grant me the privilege of being their mentee. As you can imagine, I spent many years without any kind of real mentorship.Sure, maybe I had some helpful chats with the head of my department or my boss or someone a bit more senior than me in another department, but I was pretty much going through my career alone. The thing is, you always go further, faster, and to more interesting places if you get help consistently. Learning how to do this will unlock the wisdom and support you're looking for to build an energizing career you love.

In this episode of the podcast I discuss:

  • What kind of mentors to cultivate to build a personal Board of Directors
  • How to actually ask them to be your mentor in a non cringe way
  • How to maintain the relationship so it's fruitful for both parties.
