Ginger for Digestion and More24 Jan 202400:32:06

Ginger "root" has been used for thousands of years. Technically a rhizome, not a root, ginger's modern-day claim to fame is its ability to prevent the onset of nausea. Ginger is so reliable and safe that it's been studied to prevent nausea during pregnancy as well as chemo-induced nausea.  But that is just the beginning of the benefits of ginger. It can be used to support immune function and lower cardiovascular risk, among its many uses. Nutmeg: Tasty and... Toxic?20 Dec 202300:30:45

We've all heard that "the dose makes the poison." Nowhere is this a more apt saying than with nutmeg.  Hey, don't get us wrong, just a wee bit of nutmeg can help you tolerate some of those holiday food indulgences! Nutmeg is warming, has anti-parasite and pain-relieving properties, and can be used topically for pain relief.  Join us as we touch on some history and give you our takes on nutmeg: the spice, the medicine, the poison.  Oh, and go ahead and share this episode with someone who would enjoy it! Maybe a friend who's a chef or a baker?

Did you know that nutmeg was a commodity so precious it was traded for Manhattan? From serving as a sleep aid (insomniacs chickens?) to its pain-relieving effects, nutmeg has lots of potential as a medicinal spice. Just remember, while nutmeg may enhance your holiday season, moderation is key, and it's always advisable to consult a professional before using higher doses of nutmeg as medicine.

The Truth About... Skin and Sun Safety24 Jul 202400:44:32

Tina and Leah take on some TikTok misconceptions, including influencers' anti-sunscreen rants, head-on (wearing a wide-brimmed hat, of course).  The sun is good. The sun is bad. The sun will give you cancer, no wait, it will protect you from cancers. As is often the case, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Tune in for a factual discussion about sun exposure, tanning, and the difference between UVA and UVB rays on your skin. We talk sunscreens, sun blockers, and why there is so much darn skin cancer down under! (Not THAT down under! We mean Australia/New Zealand).

The Truth About...Repurposed Drugs to Treat Cancer12 Jul 202300:52:28

Drug repurposing is using a drug previously approved for one condition to treat an entirely different condition (like cancer). In cancer care, repurposed drugs are usually gentler than FDA-approved cancer treatments. They include common drugs for diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, and more. Melatonin is a popular supplement in cancer care. Tina & Leah review the many uses of melatonin and tackle some controversies around this powerful hormone.  Join us as they chat, like only two naturopathic docs can.

Did you know melatonin was first discovered in 1958?  That’s a long time ago! Amazingly, research is still uncovering new ways melatonin affects the body. We know it sets our circadian clocks, influences immune cells and acts as an antioxidant inside cells.

But like so many natural agents, there are some cautionary tales, too. Tina & Leah explain melatonin:  when you should take it, when you should not, and what doses are safe and effective.

Risk Reduction & The Cancer Conflict30 Nov 202200:54:16

In this episode, Tina & Leah discuss how you can reliably reduce your risk of cancer occurrence, recurrence, or improve your odds if you currently have cancer. They pick up where they left off in Episode 47, talking about The Cancer Conflict, a 2022 documentary directed by Thomas Meadmore that follows two separate people, each with newly diagnosed cancer. One chooses to use conventional treatments, adding some cutting-edge therapies from Germany. The other chooses to pursue alternative treatments only. The challenges each of them faces are universal. This film is the inspiration to discuss what you can do to help yourself, reliably.

You don’t need to see the film to get a whole lot of useful information from this episode. Tina & Leah tell you about the foundations of health, the use of anecdotal evidence, and some hazards to being your own advocate throughout your treatment planning.

The Cancer Conflict: Conventional vs. Alternative Treatments23 Nov 202200:53:21

How do you choose your treatment? Conventional? Alternative? A combination of both (integrative)? Listen in as Tina & Leah discuss some do’s and don’ts of decision making that you need to know.

A film called The Cancer Conflict juxtaposed two newly diagnosed patients and followed each one as they went through their cancer treatments. One person started with conventional, the other one went with alternative medicine. This film inspired our discussion about how people make such decisions and how to strike a balance between controlling your own care and submitting to recommendations by “experts.”

You don’t have to have seen the film to enjoy the chat between Tina & Leah. As always, they use their extensive experience in oncology to bring you context and helpful lessons along the way.

The Truth About Microplastics. 26 Jun 202400:32:42

Microplastics are not just around us, they are in us. These microscopic particles of plastic may be wreaking havoc on our health in many ways, and worsening cancer risk and prognosis is one of them. In this episode, Tina and Leah discuss microplastics and their potential link to cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. They explore sources of microplastics, from single-use plastic bottles to synthetic clothing, and highlight steps you can take to reduce your exposure. They also discuss the difficulties in eliminating microplastics already present in the body and suggest ways to excrete toxins in general. Join Tina and Leah as they shed light on this growing concern and offer practical advice for healthier living.

Who's in Your Pod? Mary Barnhart, MD: The Breast Surgeon05 Oct 202201:04:33

Dr. Mary Barnhart is a former dietitian and retired breast surgeon. From the idea of spreading tumors with biopsies (true or false?) to who gets to pick the music in the OR, Tina & Leah ask some tough questions in this one.

Ultimately, you are in control of your healthcare decisions, and Dr. Barnhart discusses how she balanced medical advise with patient autonomy in her own practice. She may have retired from surgery, but she still advocates for those who have been affected by cancer. A cancer survivor herself, she knows all too well what it’s like to be the patient.
