It doesn’t matter where you are in your entrepreneur journey, whether you just opened your first store or are years into business ownership, adversity will always be there to humble you. | What to Do With Challenging Employees | 30 Jan 2023 | 00:24:36
It’s easier to hold others accountable then it is to hold ourselves accountable. Most leaders don’t want to look at themselves first and ask, “Did I do everything to help this person?”. In today’s world, we’re seeing more of business owners who are struggling hard to find people to even just show up to work. When they do finally hire and train an employee, they might do everything in their power to ensure that they don’t quit---including performance feedback. If a job isn’t being done correctly, rather than rectify it by talking to the employee, they let it slide out of fear of scaring them off. But a job done poorly is worse than one not done at all. In today’s episode, Theresa discusses:
Sometimes, however, after we’ve done all we feel we can do as leaders, the person you’ve hired or placed in a certain position just might not be right for the business. When this happens, the best move is to part ways with this employee so that they can find their calling and you can fill the role with the right person. | The Work Required to Grow Your Brick-and-Mortar Business | 17 Jan 2023 | 00:27:48
The truth is, there is no secret to growing a business. No quick fix or overnight solution is going to make the difference between failure and success. If you want to know the truth on how you can reach your goals faster and easier, it’s all about putting in the work. When people hear this, they assume long hours, back-breaking effort, and trying to do everything themselves in order to get ahead. When, in reality, it’s allowing yourself to let go of the things that are taking up your valuable time and honing in on the things that really need your attention. In today’s episode, Theresa discusses:

| Creating a Mindset-First Approach to Growing Your Local Business | 02 Jan 2023 | 00:36:42 | |
Like many people who become entrepreneurs, Linda Perry started out her professional working career doing all of the things she thought she was supposed to be doing. Go to school for law, become successful, make parents proud. And while she admired the work she did as a lawyer, she always felt a stronger passion calling to her, one that would help people achieve the dreams they always wanted; She wanted to become a mindset coach. Success is little about the tactics and strategies we use to get there, because without the mindset that is ready to take on all that comes with entrepreneurship, they are useless tools. It’s about how you approach each day, deciding whether or not to let your fears and doubts consume you or tell them to get lost because you have goals to meet. Your mind has the power to do amazing and seemingly unconceivable things, you just have to believe that you can. In today’s episode, Theresa and mindset coach Linda Perry discuss:

| What's in Store in 2023 for Brick-and-Mortar Businesses? | 26 Dec 2022 | 00:38:57 | |
The state of business in the last few years has been...unpredictable to say the least. Many business owners had to deal with shutting down, preparing to re-open after months of little or no income, only to be shut down once again, navigating the different loan forgiveness options, dealing with inflation prices, re-open once more, all while losing customers to online retailers along the way. It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride.
Today, Theresa talks about how our fears can keep us from moving forward. People want to “go back” to how things used to operate, to fall back into old ways instead of improving and powering forward into the unknown.
Local businesses are the backbone of any economy and will always persevere through any state of it. It’s up to the business owners themselves, however, to not waver in hard times, but to adapt to the current circumstances they find themselves in and figure out how to push past these adversities in order to see the success they want for themselves and business owners like them all around the world.
It’s all about perspective. If you choose to see the situation you’re in as impossible to get out of or move past, then odds are you won’t. Your mind remains and functions in that fear mode and paralyzes you from taking the proper steps to get back on track. But if we simply break that habit, that mindset of fear and self-doubt, we’ll be able to think more clearly and focus on what really matters: our vision and how we are going to make it happen.
In today’s episode, Theresa discusses:

Knowing the ins and outs of your business is essential, and that includes your numbers. | Will brick-and-mortar stores survive? What the future looks like for Main Street Businesses | 07 Nov 2022 | 00:30:35
More and more we seem to hear about online businesses taking over the market which leads us to ask the question: Will main street businesses survive? The brick-and-mortar shops and stores we know and love might seem to be falling wayside to the cyber world, but there’s an itch that shopping online just won’t scratch. There’s something about physically walking into a store that just can’t be replaced. Maybe it has a particular smell, the décor speaks to you, or simply getting to meet the fine folks that operate it all stimulate the senses and create an experience far superior than click, scroll, purchase. There’s always going to be some kind of competition out there, but figuring out what you do best and sticking to your guns in the face of adversity will help you to always overcome. After all, being small is your super power. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, I’d love to hear about and know your biggest takeaway. | Are you a Captain or a Leader? | 17 Oct 2022 | 00:22:03
I’ve been to my fair share of masterminds over the years. Some have stuck with me, others not so much. On one particular trip with Bo Eason, I was encouraged to tell my story of how I got to be where I am today in front of not just the other attendees, but also have it recorded to share with the rest of the world, and it was a pivotal moment for me as a business owner and as a human being. It wasn’t always easy for me to be my true self. Often times I molded myself to fit other’s needs and desires, shoving the real me down until she could no longer be heard. But over time, through many revelations and breakthroughs, I slowly learned how to stop clouding my mind with that sort of thinking and to really step into myself. To no longer hide the real me for fear of failure. I consider myself to be a leader, and there are many other leaders of all kinds out there. However, just being called a “leader” doesn’t automatically make you great or all-knowing. That part comes when you fully step into that role and become the captain of your life. You have to learn to be honest with yourself; about what you want and all the reasons why. Once you gain the tools and qualities to break down all of the falsities and see the grander visions, to see the highest potential in people who can’t see it themselves and help them rise to it, you become that great leader. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, I’d love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway. | The Real Work Is In The Rest | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:11:45
All too often do I see business owners burning themselves out by thinking they have to work 24/7, 365. Not only is it not realistic to ask that of yourself, but you wouldn’t ask anyone else to make those kinds of sacrifices either. Take the time you need to really rest and give yourself the opportunity to function as the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. It’s the only way you can ensure that you’re showing up as the kind of leader you need to be for your business, your employees, and your customers. | My Take On Quiet Quitting | 19 Sep 2022 | 00:35:19
Working for years at a corporate job that didn’t value my skills and knowledge and routinely took advantage of me, I get why so many employees are “quiet quitting” their jobs. The pandemic really helped to expose a lot of bad ways in which businesses were functioning and employee wellness (both physical and mental) started to become more of a priority. I’m not an advocate for quiet quitting, nor do I condone it, but its presence is a chance for us as business owners to take a look at how we run things and whether or not we could be doing better for the people that work for us. If our employees are not happy in their jobs, is it something we can help to improve? Are we the cause of the unhappiness? Or is this person simply not right for this role? Taking the time to decipher the real issues and working towards solving them is what our focus should be on in order to progress. Stay tuned for the launch of my new Business Masters Advisory Board, where local and small business owners can apply to be a part of the board of directors to meet regularly, collaborate, and help each other to do better and be better for the communities we live in and are a part of. | Encore: The 3rd Place | 15 Aug 2022 | 00:18:07
A replay of one of Theresa’s favorite episodes, The 3rd Place. The message she explains is one she truly believes and is the foundation for any successful business in this modern world. Everyone needs a place in this world. One where they feel comfortable, where they can be their truest selves without fear or doubt, one that just feels right. For many, there are usually two of these places; Home and work. When you’re home, you feel relaxed and safe. At work, a place of unity amongst colleagues, that promotes creativity and innovation. But the third place is something we need more of. It’s the place between the other two places. When you aren’t at work and you aren’t at home, your local bakery, coffee shop, shoe store, dry cleaners; these places should feel just as accepting and relaxing as the first two. Somewhere you are happy to spend your precious time, your most valuable asset. As entrepreneurs, it’s up to us to create these places for our customers, for our community, to retreat to when in the in-between. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, we’d love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway. | Scaling Your Small Business to Big Numbers | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:33:48
An entrepreneurial venture without the daily headaches, that seemingly runs itself? It’s not a myth. And it’s 100% attainable when you begin scaling your small business. It goes back to that foundation you’ve set for yourself. Once you’ve established what it is you want to do and accomplish with your business and the lives you want to affect, you can then start to look at how you can do these things on a larger scale. Many business owners strive to see large growth, but some obtain it and aren’t ready to handle all that comes with that sudden growth. Having the right systems, processes, and even people in place to help you and your business streamline itself is crucial to sustaining any success you are granted. Without that backbone to hold things together, it can all come falling down before your eyes. | Is Your Team Aligned or Fractured? | 27 Jun 2022 | 00:25:14
It’s never a bad time to take a moment to stop and look at where you are at in your business. Where do you want to go? How are you going to get there? And, most importantly, do you have the right people in place to help you get there?
Many business owners will hire people just to have bodies to fill the roles. While this may work for a little while, you won’t ever see your business grow and evolve to bigger and better things without ensuring you have the right people to help you do so.
Paying attention to people’s values, their individual interests, and strengths can benefit you in ways you may not have even thought of. When people are placed in roles that they enjoy and take pride in, all while being in an environment that is open to diverse minds, ideas, and propping people up so that they have the space to be their best selves, everybody wins. The business thrives, your employees thrive, and you, inevitably, will follow suit.

| Get Your Calendar to Work For You | 20 Jun 2022 | 00:27:19 | |
One thing I’ve seen more and more business owners struggling with is keeping a calendar. They may have a to-do list of goals and things they need to get done, but it’s not getting them where they want to be. They aren’t getting their calendar to work for them.
I recommend learning how to break down your goals into actionable-sized chunks that can be completed throughout your week or month is key to maintaining a calendar that actually helps you work towards your goals.
Think bigger picture first. From there, figure out what steps need to be taken for that goal to be met and schedule it out accordingly. The smaller steps are less intimidating, more achievable, and will eventually add up to completing that larger goal.
When you work each day towards the version of your business you wish to see come to fruition, slowly but surely you will see it all piece itself together.

| True Belonging: An Interview with Denise Solar Cox | 06 Jun 2022 | 01:07:14 | |
Author, mentor, two-time filmmaker, Ted Talk speaker, and long-time friend Denise Solar Cox joins me today to discuss what it really means to belong.
Over the years of doing hundreds of live, in-person engagements, she began to realize that everyone she spoke to wanted to talk about belonging. What does it mean to belong to something? What are the feelings around it and how is it even created?
An individual’s dominant ideology, or the way they perceive the world, plays a huge role in this sense of belonging. The key is to be open to other people’s own ideologies and to not make snap judgements on someone who simply views the world differently than you. Creating environments of acceptance rather than exclusion benefit all parties involved and help us to have a better understanding of our fellow peers.
When we allow our minds to be open and think freely and not let our initial instincts take over, we can all give each other a better sense of belonging.
To learn more about Denise’s story head over to her website, where you can read her blog, listen to her own podcast episodes, or reach out to her directly. You can also find her on Instagram @projectenye or her LinkedIn page.

| Are We Facing a Recession? How to Proof Your Business Against It | 25 Apr 2022 | 00:18:44 | |
Recession-proofing your business sounds like a smart move in the entrepreneurial world, but it can actually lead you down a path of no return.
The problem many people face when attempting to create a plan for their business that is in the midst of a recession is that they only plan for their current circumstance. They function as if the hard times are permanent, and when the market fluctuates back as it inevitably does, their business plan no longer works.
The solution? Make your business resilient from the get-go. Ensure that it is built on a foundation that is strong enough to withstand whatever the world may throw at it. Think long-term instead of short, that way, you can easily traverse through and come out the other side unscathed and still on track towards your ultimate vision without struggle.

| The Right Time to Invest in Your Business | 18 Apr 2022 | 00:23:19 | |
How exactly do you know when is the right time to invest in your business? First things first, it’s important to know what to invest in.
Your team – The crew of people you choose to help your business be all that you want it to be. You can’t do it all yourself, and having that support system that you take care of will ensure they take care of you in return.
Software – The systems that help you run your business can ultimately make or break you. Investing in some systems can be a waste of money, but the ones that align with your vision and values will take you to the next level.
Mentors – There are people out there who can offer you insights and knowledge from years of real life experiences that are simply priceless. They can teach you crucial information about running your business and leading a life of success that you otherwise might never come to realize.
It is always the right time to invest in your business, it is simply a matter of investing in the right things that will help your business rather than hurt it.

| The 5 Mistakes of Success & Struggle | 11 Apr 2022 | 00:28:44 | |
When things go astray in this world, as they often and inevitably do, the best thing you can do is to try and learn from it. There will always be struggles and failures along any path in life, and when we look at them as opportunities to do better and be better, the answers will fall into our laps. | Taking Radical Responsibility in Your Business | 04 Apr 2022 | 00:31:03
As entrepreneurs, we are in the business of providing value to our customers, in one way or another. Whether it’s our products, our services, the environment in which our business operates, or a combination, we are trying to give people the best experience that we can. And that takes being radically responsible for our actions. When you say you are going to do something, follow through. If an employee is struggling with a task, help them course correct or solve the issue. If there is an issue that can only be solved by letting someone go or having somebody else take over that role, you need to make that call. Taking responsibility for your business and it’s functions is the only way to ensure that it will be headed in the right direction. Being responsible doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. But it does mean having the integrity to realize when something isn’t flowing and take the proper action to get it back on track. If the vision you have for your business is not aligned with your actions and steps to get there, it will only ever be just a vision and never your reality. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, I’d love to hear about it and know your biggest take away. | What You Really Need To Get Through the Challenges We Are Facing Today | 28 Mar 2022 | 00:22:01
It’s becoming increasingly more difficult to operate a business today. People are struggling to hire and retain good employees, while dealing with low supply chains and increased prices on just about everything. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle. Diversifying your business is one way to make your and everybody else’s lives a bit easier. When it comes to your purveyors, purchasing from multiple sources will benefit you when one has a product that the other might be out of. When it comes to income streams, you also want to make sure you have more than just one. If you operate a brick and mortar business, having an online shop will ensure that you still have income should your live store be shut down. Diversity in people is a largely overlooked strategy. People come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, but they also each have their own unique backgrounds and life experiences. Taking these people into your business and shining a light on their individual skills and traits can help everybody grow and thrive. Creativity is another way to ease your stresses. Look at how you can do things differently than you have been or than those around you are doing. How can you bring convenience and comfort to your customers in a new and exciting way? Lastly, learn how to do more with less. If you find yourself wasting a lot of time on menial or redundant tasks, figure out how you can do them with less “fluff”. Many business owners have a tendency to over-complicate their operations which only leaves you feeling burnt out. Streamline your operations to make your, your customer’s, and your staff’s lives easier. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, I’d love to hear about it and know your biggest take away. | Managing Your Cashflow Isn’t Impossible | 21 Mar 2022 | 00:23:07
Everybody wants more cash, right? The problem is figuring out how to get a steady flow of it into your business and not being in the negative at the end of the month. The revenue your business generates is just the top-line number. It doesn’t mean that’s how much money you take home at the end of the day. Once you factor in all of your costs of operation, that number can look very different. It can be a bit intimidating to manage the flow of cash in and out of your business, but with a bit of planning and optimization, you can get that number to where you really want it to be. | The 3rd Place | 09 Mar 2022 | 00:11:01
But the third place is something we need more of in this world. It’s the place between the other two places. When you aren’t at work and you aren’t at home, your local bakery, coffee shop, shoe store, dry cleaners; these places should feel just as accepting and relaxing as the first two. As entrepreneurs, it’s up to us to create these places for our customers, for our community, to retreat to when in the in-between. If you enjoyed this episode and, in some way, it inspired you to start taking action, I’d love to hear about it and know your biggest take away.
