Let's unpack the money stuff from Love is Blind UK, with Ellie Austin-Williams28 Aug 202401:01:27

[WARNING: LOVE IS BLIND UK SPOILERS IN THIS EPISODE] Love is Blind UK has just wrapped on Netflix and WHAT. A. SEASON. From prenups to "I don'ts" to who pays for dinner and Sabrina's £70 supermarket shop, there were SO many juicy money themes in this series that I just had to unpack with someone.

I'm joined by author of Money Talks, Ellie Austin-Williams, to chat about the couples form this season and explore some of the money stuff that came up during the show. Despite money being firstly a mathematical concept, what we kept coming back to was how deeply values-based so many of the financial conflicts were, highlighting how important it is to understand your own financial compass in order to have a healthy relationship.

Highlights:

  • Reunion debrief, including Sabrina's £70 supermarket shop and an ironing board
  • Clashing love languages and the financial side of investing in a relationship
  • Tom and Maria's clashing financial values
  • Who pays for dinner on a first date?
  • Can you ever reconcile differences in foundational financial values?
  • What questions could the couples be asking in the pods to get to know each other more intimately on a financial level?
  • Prenups, protecting your assets, and what's fair

IMPORTANT: when it comes to money and relationships, it's important to be aware of the risks and red flags for financial abuse. This interview episode with Serena McDuff from Respect Victoria explores financial abuse and its warning signs: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Co414jUd8h9Nghh9sqq2V?si=ZBoM0GBsRUugI82g2jGt7A&nd=1&dlsi=0b9407665813470a

How to expand your financial comfort zone22 Mar 202300:24:46

In this solo episode I take you through the concept of the financial comfort zone, what it is and how it informs our financial behaviour.

Much like comfort zones in our broader everyday lives, financial comfort zones can keep you stuck in certain sets of circumstances, and make it difficult to make changes even when it feels counterintuitive to stay where we are.

Insights in this episode have been extracted from my graduate studies in Financial Psychology, so buckle up and get ready to get to know more about why you are the way you are with money.

BONUS: 23 goals for 202316 Jan 202300:31:50

In this chatty bonus episode I go through 23 goals I have for 2023. Some are financial, some are lifestyle and some relate to business, and might give you some ideas on where to start with your own goal setting, or just be a juicy listen if you fancy a nosey into where my focus is going this year in a more candid way.

I'll do a review episode at the end of the year to see which ones I achieved and which I didn't. These goals are just a bit of fun, some of them are more serious than others, but they give me a bit of a bucket to pick and choose from at a top level. These aren't my only goals, nor are they the most structured iterations of my focuses for the year.

I hope you enjoy! Let me know on Instagram if you're working towards any of these goals too.

We need to talk about the coaching industry, with Peta Serras09 Nov 202200:41:08

In this episode I am joined by my friend Peta Serras to take a bit of a deep dive into the coaching industry. From life coaching to business coaching to relationship coaching – there’s all kinds of coaching available these days, sometimes costing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars (yes, really!). Peta and I discuss the ethics of the coaching industry, what is and isn’t worth your money, the extent to which qualifications come into play, the gendered conversation around coaching, and how to discern red flags in coaches that might tempt you to sign up to their programs.

Highlights:

  • Using your wealth to sell your services is NOT okay
  • While some coaching is unethical, broadly hating on coaching as a whole has serious feminist implications
  • Green flags in coaches – what they CAN teach you, and why the dodgy ones are squashing the value of coaches that actually have something to offer
  • The predatory nature of the coaching industry
  • The darker side of coaching that resembles a pyramid scheme

How to feel like the hottest sh*t to ever walk the earth, pt 1: The Comments Section with E & V22 Jul 202400:44:47

This week we're kicking off with part 1 of a 2 parter about a huuuge topic: confidence. We’re getting into the nitty-gritty of self-love and confidence, which are sneaky aspects of our lives that impact making financial decisions.

No one is scrutinising us as much as we do ourselves, and it’s human nature (and conditioning) to think that a shiny new thing, like an outfit, makeup or even a diet program, will sort out all our insecurities. Fortunately, the best fix is free and usually what we actually need is a shift from seeking external validation to cultivating internal confidence. Listen in to find out how you can make that shift both online and offline, and how you can also be a positive force to those around you!
