157. Maybe The Most Important Episode I’ve Recorded
19 oct. 2026
00:08:55
Most of us equate being organized with being good at time management. Sorted inbox, perfect to-do list, color-coded calendar – that must mean you’re close to cracking it. But organization and time management are not the same skill, and the gap between them might be exactly what’s keeping you stuck. So if you’re organized and still chronically overwhelmed, I’d start here. Short one today, but it packs a punch.

156. Visualizing and Dividing Home Admin Labor
12 oct. 2026
00:17:52
When couples talk about dividing home labor, the conversation usually centers on the visible stuff – who cooks, who cleans, who handles pickups. But the admin side rarely makes it into that conversation: the emails, the forms, the scheduling, the calendaring. It's real work, it takes real time, and for a lot of people, it's not in the pot at all. So if you've been carrying more than your share and can't quite put your finger on why, this one's worth a listen.

155. "You'd Think as a [Professional Title] I'd Have This Figured Out by Now"
05 oct. 2026
00:13:09
There's this quiet assumption that at some point, a smart, accomplished adult should just have this whole time management thing figured out. So if you've ever looked at your workload and thought, "I should be better at managing this by now," I want to push back on that. Time management is a skill set, not a character trait, and most of us are running on a version we learned in middle school that was never upgraded for the life we're managing now. Let's dig in.

154. Networking
28 sept. 2026
00:24:05
Networking has a reputation: big events, stiff small talk, LinkedIn posts, collecting business cards from people you'll never talk to again. No wonder most of us let it slide to the bottom of the list. So if you know you should be doing more of it but can't seem to make it stick, I want to offer a different take on what networking can look like and how to make it feel a lot less like a chore. Let's get into it.

153. It's Not (Just) About Control
21 sept. 2026
00:11:33
Planning tends to get filed under productivity and control – a type-A thing, an efficiency thing, something you do to squeeze more out of your day. And there's some truth to that. But the deeper reason behind why I plan has nothing to do with control and everything to do with taking care of myself. If that sounds corny, I get it. I also think it'll make a lot more sense by the end of this one. Let's talk about it.

152. The Power of Constraints
14 sept. 2026
00:17:20
We tend to treat limited time and energy as the enemy – something to push against, work around, or refuse to acknowledge. But embracing constraints doesn't slow you down or hamper your ambition. I'd argue it forces clarity, creativity, and progress in ways that ignoring them never will. Today I'm digging into why, with a fascinating podcast episode as my jumping-off point and two client stories that bring it home.

151. Push Seasons
07 sept. 2026
00:25:14
Sometimes we have a goal that's worth pushing hard for. Most of what I talk about here is doing less – getting your workload in line with your capacity so life actually feels manageable, but there are times when the goals we want for ourselves mean deliberately making our lives harder for a while. Let's discuss four criteria to think through before committing to a push season.

150. You Can't Win by Everyone's Rules - Lightbulb Moment
31 août 2026
00:10:50
We live in a culture that glorifies the hustle, and early in my legal career, I was fully bought in. So when a senior associate I deeply respected criticized constant weekend work as poor case management, it stopped me in my tracks. If the same behavior earns praise from some and criticism from others, there's no universal rulebook to follow. We get to decide what winning looks like for ourselves, and I find that pretty freeing. Let's discuss.

149. Planning is Billable - i.e., Valuable (Listen even if you don’t bill)
24 août 2026
00:19:40
Oftentimes, planning gets categorized as less valuable than the work we should be doing. So if you've been skipping your planning session because you don't think you can bill for it, or if you don't bill for your time but find your planning session keeps getting quietly dismissed, I want to push back. Let's discuss the three reasons protecting time to plan is worth it, no matter how your hours are tracked.

148. AI Making Us Feel More Scattered: Let's Talk Solutions
17 août 2026
00:24:37
A friend of mine sent a message in a group chat: "Is AI making anybody else's ADHD symptoms feel worse?" I get what she means. Let's kick off a conversation about why AI makes us feel this way and what we can do about it. And as with everything AI, this is new, so feel free to reach out with your own thoughts, suggestions, and strategies!

147. Things to Calendar for an Ever-Different Schedule (e.g., shift work)
10 août 2026
00:18:26
If you have an ever-different schedule due to your work schedule, a partner's, or something else, the Bright Method may sound like it wouldn't work for you (after all, I talk a lot about calendaring repetitive things), but it SHINES for people like us. Let's dig into it, talk about things to calendar when you get, e.g., a shift schedule, and more.

145. Push Back – And Let the Wrong People Leave; "You're Going to Disappoint People, and It's Still Worth It."
27 juil. 2026
00:19:34
A client said it like it was just a fact: if she pushed back on new work, those clients would take their business elsewhere and never come back. Kelly heard it and recognized the fear behind it - she'd also spent years operating from that same exact assumption.
This episode is about what actually happens when you push back. Kelly makes the case that it's one of the best ways to find out who you're working with, whether they're a fit for the life you're building, and whether it's worth staying. She shares her own story from her attorney days, a client who stepped off a board after one pushback conversation, and another who got promoted five months after finally having the capacity conversation her boss didn't know was needed. If your plate is overflowing and you keep absorbing anyway, this one's worth a listen.

144. Follow Through on Your Commitments – But Maybe Not Always
20 juil. 2026
00:17:39
Most of us grew up with the same rule: you start something, you finish it, no matter what. So if you've ever stayed in a commitment well past the point where it was working for you, or found yourself white-knuckling through something out of obligation rather than intention, I want to dig into that. There's more nuance here than the rule suggests, including what a graceful, fair exit can actually look like. Let's discuss.

143. Getting Out of the House in the AM
13 juil. 2026
00:17:32
In this episode of The Bright Method Podcast, Kelly Nolan riffs on a question from a friend: why does it always take so long to get out of the house in the morning, and what do you actually do about it? She walks through three things – embracing how long getting out the door actually takes (it's probably 15–20 minutes, minimum), calendaring that reality instead of your aspiration so the scramble-y feeling has somewhere to go, and the one firm rule to hold in your head as you're moving through your morning. It sounds almost too simple. But if you regularly leave the house feeling behind before your day has even started, this episode is for you.

142. We’re Back! & The Case for Reviewing Your Week Every Week
06 juil. 2026
00:24:46
In this episode of The Bright Method Podcast, Kelly Nolan is back from the break and walks through the one line item she wants in your weekly planning session – the Clean Slate – and why reviewing last week packs a bigger punch than you'd expect. It sounds anticlimactic, almost boring, but this one line item is sneakily powerful, and its ripple effects go much further than it sounds. If you regularly end your week landing in the "I didn't do enough" story, this episode is for you.

140. Stop Bargaining with Reality (And What to Do Instead)
23 mars 2026
00:22:41
Bargaining with reality just leads to frustration, wasted energy, and missed opportunities to do something about it. Let's dig into what it can actually look like to stop fighting the things you can't change (your memory, your energy at night, your partner's limitations) and start getting creative to work with the reality you have. The goal was never to be a different person – it's to build a life that works with who you already are.

139. What you bring to the table is more than always being at the table
16 mars 2026
00:15:28
Responsiveness is something that has taken over American work culture. Between email, Teams/Slack, and more, there can be an assumption everyone is available at all times. But your value to your company is more than always being available – and is undercut by that approach.
Let's talk about how to shift into protecting time for strategic, heads-down work – and remain as responsive as we need to be.

130. People-Pleasing & Realizing You Can't Say Yes to Everything
21 janv. 2026
00:30:14
I hear variations of "I'm a people pleaser" as people join a Bright Method program or, once they're in the program, variations of "I'm realizing I can't say yes to everything, and if I'm not that person, who am I?" Let's talk about it – and three points for those who related to that.

129. Why traditional time management advice doesn't work for many professional working women (and why I focus my work on those women)
12 janv. 2026
00:24:41
When I was struggling with time management, I had a lightbulb moment that traditional time management advice wasn't built for me. And the Bright Method, I believe, fills that gap. Let's talk about why traditional time management advice might not have worked for you – and why a different approach might.

128. "I'd rather be special than happy": Egos don't always lead us to happiness
05 janv. 2026
00:24:24
A few years ago, I listened to this podcast episode from the Atlantic, How to Spend Time on What You Value, after a client sent it to me. You can listen here on Apple and here on Spotify.
Let's talk about how our egos can lead us to pursue things that don't always align with what we say is most important to us and/or leads us away from what would actually make us happy.
This is NOT to say we shouldn't have ambition or go after full careers. Not at all - I personally am very ambitious and support women going after high-powered careers. Just make sure it's what you truly want and fits with the life you want for yourself. Let's discuss!

15 déc. 2025

Is time-blocking your personal life overwhelming?
Doesn't this lead to a daily long list of too many alerts?
Doesn't having to move too many boxes when time blocks hit get old?

Ever keep rolling the same task week after week? You see it on your list or flagged in your inbox, and every time you look at it, you feel that little wave of guilt. In this episode, I share how slow-rolling tasks—sometimes unintentionally, sometimes on purpose—can actually work in your favor.
I share a story from my early law career that taught me how some tasks lose relevance over time and how checking in before tackling them can save hours of unnecessary work. We also talk about how "slow-rolling" helps when you work for a shiny-object boss—or when you're your own. Instead of reacting to every new idea, give it breathing space. Let excitement cool, check your calendar, and make more grounded decisions about priorities.
This episode is about using slow-rolling as a time management strategy to:
Reassess stale tasks before spending time on them, and
Protect focus from shiny-object overload
When you use slow-rolling strategically, you reduce stress, reclaim focus, and make smarter choices about where your time goes.

116. Flexibility & Accountability: Owning what we really want our time to look like
13 oct. 2025
00:18:11
When I used to think about time management, Past Me assumed, on some level, that the goal was to keep work in work hours and personal life in personal hours. But in reality, life is far more nuanced — and that's where the powerful dynamic of flexibility and accountability comes in.
In this episode, I share how hearing Jeanelle Teves' (click here for her Instagram profile) statements about how high flexibilty comes with high accountability put to words something I'd been learning was the real goal for many women when it comes to time management. Over the years, I've realized that what many professional women actually want is flexibility in their schedules to fit in real life into their work hours – workouts, doctor's appointments, family needs – while still being highly accountable to the work they've agreed to do.
We'll talk about:
How my definition of successful time management shifted from "free up nights and weekends" to creating a system that flexes with different life phases.
Why flexibility matters more than rigid schedules.
How to distinguish between healthy flexibility and an unsustainable workload that can't be solved by accountability alone.
Why learning a system over a schedule empowers you to evolve your approach as your life changes.
This is a reminder that flexibility in time management isn't about working all the time — it's about designing your days and weeks to reflect your real life, while still being accountable to doing excellent work.
If you want to start seeing your capacity vs. workload in a more objective way, check out my free 3-day program at kellynolan.com/refresh.

114. An Example of Saying No When You Want to Say Yes
29 sept. 2025
00:27:19
Saying no is rarely easy — especially when the opportunity is something you really want to say yes to. In this episode, I share a personal example of when I turned down a big media opportunity that landed right in the middle of my family's annual Colorado trip.
On paper, I was technically available. My husband could've watched the kids, my calendar was clear, and the opportunity would've been great for my business. But in practice? Saying yes would have derailed my ability to truly unplug, be present with my family, and recharge.
In this episode, I walk you through:
The ripple effects of saying yes — from prep time and tech checks to energy recovery afterward.
Why the pause is the most powerful tool when you're tempted to say yes too quickly.
How to evaluate the true cost of opportunities beyond the calendar block they appear to take.
The difference between scarcity thinking ("this may never come again") and embracing a more abundance mindset (even if a little woo).
Why protecting vacation time, family time, and rest can sometimes matter more than visibility opportunities.
How saying no doesn't just protect you — it also builds strength, clarity, and integrity.
I also share how I reframed the "no" by connecting the opportunity with another woman in my field. It reminded me that collaboration, generosity, and boundaries can all exist together.
If you ever feel guilty or second-guess yourself when saying no — especially to exciting opportunities — this episode might help you see the full picture and feel more confident in your decision-making.
Check out my free 3-day time blocking program at kellynolan.com/refresh to practice visually mapping out ripple effects before you commit. And if you're ready to go deeper, enrollment for the Bright Method 10-week program opens October 3rd. More info on both below.

113. Halloween: A great example of mental load & how calendars help
22 sept. 2025

111. Getting Less Stress In Your Life Isn't Always Efficient – And We Need To Own That
01 sept. 2025
00:17:39
When US society talks about time management, the conversation often assumes the goals of productivity and efficiency. Do more in less time. Move faster. Cram it all in. But here's the truth I want to unpack today: I believe our real goal for time management (at least for people similar to me) is more peace of mind and clarity and less stress, and less stress isn't always efficient — and that's okay.
Today's episode digs into:
Why American productivity culture gets it wrong by idolizing efficiency as the key to getting the life you want.
How to reframe your goal so that calm and breathing space (not constant speed) drive your decisions.
Why creating margin in your day — even if it's "inefficient" — leads to better quality work, more joy, and less burnout.
Three practical strategies to help you implement this shift:
Build in padding to your calendar (for commutes, deadlines, and transitions).
Let go of commitments to make space for that padding.
Ask grounding questions like "How do I want my life to feel?" and "What do I want the pace of my life to be?"
As I share in this episode, I still want to do a lot — from running a business to raising kids to having a full life outside of work. But the only way I can do it with any joy is by optimizing for less stress, not more efficiency.
If you've ever felt like productivity hacks left you running faster but enjoying less, this episode will give you a fresh, practical framework: optimize for breathing space, not efficiency.
Enrollment for the Bright Method program opens September 10 at 10:00 AM CST. With this 10-week system, you'll learn how to bring these ideas into your own life using a realistic, calendar-based approach that accounts for everything — personal and professional. Learn more at kellynolan.com/bright.

110. Career Shifts with Your Whole Person in Mind with Career Coach Sarah Wagoner
25 août 2025
00:50:14
Career transitions aren't just about the potential new job — they ripple into every part of your life. In this episode, I sit down with Sarah Wagoner, a certified leadership and transformation coach, to talk about navigating career changes while also accounting for the realities of your whole life — from raising young kids to caring for aging parents.
We dig into:
Why you can't separate your career from your personal life (and how ignoring this leads to burnout).
The "moment of awakening" many women hit when work no longer feels aligned — often triggered by a new baby, health crisis, or family shift.
How to use an energy inventory to understand what lights you up at work — and what drains you.
The importance of knowing your values during your current phase (because values shift!) and using them to guide decisions at work and home.
Boundaries as a filter — not a wall — and what that looks like in practice for professional women.
Examples of how Sarah's clients have designed their careers and leadership roles to fit their real lives — including moving into leadership roles, taking consulting contracts, and saying no to roles that didn't align.
I especially love Sarah's approach because it parallels how I teach time management for working moms and professional women: your calendar has to reflect your whole life – the personal and the professional (not just work) – for it to work because your time and energy are limited, and your plans for both have to work together as one has an impact on the other.
If you're in a season of asking:
Is this job still right for me?
Do I even want to move up, or do I miss the individual contributor work I used to love?
How do I juggle my career and the demands of family life without burning out?
…this episode is for you.
Sarah shares practical tools, grounded strategies, and thought-provoking questions to help you re-meet yourself after big life changes — so your career actually supports the life you want in this chapter.

108. Business Owner Finances with Shanna Skidmore
28 juil. 2025

This episode is geared toward the business owner (e.g., attorneys running their own firms, physicians or therapists running their own practices, architects or interior designers running their own businesses) – though I suspect everyone can get something out of it.
As business owners, how we spend our time has an impact on how much revenue and profit we experience. To discuss that with far more expertise than I have, I'm thrilled to have Shanna Skidmore—a business strategist and former Fortune 100 financial advisor—on the podcast to talk about how to build a business in a way that honors your time, your energy, and your life outside of work.
We get into:
How time and finances intersect in business
How to define what "enough" looks like for you—and how to use that to guide your business decisions
How to shift how you use your time in light of your "enough" number and where your time and finances currently stand
How building processes to help you with workflows and client communications can help – even if you don't want to raise your rates, and so much more.
